I’ve been musing on how many ways there are to find out information about this season’s events. Not so long ago, the printed brochure was our only method of communication. Now we have a plethora of e-tools at our disposal. With Twitter and Facebook accounts and the launch of our new website (www.turnersims.co.uk), you can not only discover what is coming up but let us know what you think of it too. The Turner Sims YouTube channel lets you see many of the artists and groups in action. And with blogs, text messages and mobile phone apps still to come, it seems that communication is at the heart of all we do.

And yet the essence of what Turner Sims does still comes from the live performances we present, both in the venue and elsewhere. The Spring season is no exception, with artists from

far flung corners of the globe passing through Southampton to present their musical perspectives on the world. Since Paul Lewis’ last Schubert retrospective ten years ago his profile has risen hugely. As a result, the series which launches here in February will also go to venues in Europe, America and Australia.

Meanwhile, this season’s jazz artists are heading into the UK from Europe, America and Australia, with New York bass player Ben Allison giving an exclusive appearance. Folk music includes two bands which have been notable by their absence from the UK scene in recent years, Battlefield Band and Danú. By contrast, singer Mark Padmore and the Britten Sinfonia have been regular visitors over the past three years. This season sees the completion of their Britten song cycle series and also the launch of the Maggini Quartet’s new series focussing on Britten’s teacher, Frank Bridge.

So whether you are reading this brochure online or in print, I hope the content inspires you to join us soon for a live music experience.

Turner Sims in partnership with the SoCo Music Project and the University’s Institute of Sound & Vibration Research once again brings to life the Southampton Vegetable Orchestra as part of National Science and Engineering Week. Last year visitors made flutes out of carrots, trumpets out of broccoli and shakers out of peppers. What can we come up with in 2011?

Join the Galliard Wind Ensemble for a wild afternoon of stories with music. The programme includes Little Red Riding Hood with music by Paul Patterson, and three tales from Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts. Brought to life by Martin Butler’s music encounter, the Crocky Wocky Crocodile who eats nice little girls, the scheming pig not wishing to become Farmer Bland’s bacon and the funny tummy monster.

JAZZ @ TURNER SIMSJazz this Spring has an international dimension. Travelling from furthest afield are Australian trio Trichotomy who showcase their Antipodean sound. The American contingent includes trumpeter Abram Wilson paying homage to Gershwin, and legendary saxophonist Joe Lovano with his US Five group. New York bassist Ben Allison gives an exclusive UK gig and the jazz double bill of UK talent is also a Turner Sims production. Soweto Kinch visits twice including a big project in Southampton Guildhall. Finally the European element comes from trumpeter Paolo Fresu, who appears with American guitarist Ralph Towner, and Swedish singer Viktoria Tolstoy who explores her Russian roots.

GLOBAL VOYAGESMusical origins are at the heart of the Spring Global Voyages series. The Creole Choir of Cuba tell the stories of their Haitian ancestors whilst Téa Hodžic presents the songs of her homeland, the former Yugoslavia. Baaba Maal meanwhile explores the new Africa, with its need to balance the demands of modernism and tradition. Closer to home Irish band Danú and Scottish legends Battlefield Band reflect their distinct heritage whilst the New Scorpion Band offer an insight into our maritime history. Finally Dale Templar introduces us to our own Human Planet to tie in with the BBC’s epic new series filmed in over 70 locations, including many of the remotest places on earth.

Schubert Sonata No 15 in C, D840 Drei Klavierstücke, D946 Sonata No 17 in D, D850

Thursday 3 February – 8pm

Tonight heralds the start of a two-year Schubert series from the much loved pianist Paul Lewis. Presented at Turner Sims in six concerts over two years, this series will encompass many of Schubert’s significant piano works. We begin with the Sonata in C D840, nicknamed ‘Reliquie’ as it was thought erroneously to be Schubert’s last work when it was published posthumously in 1861 (it was in fact written in 1825). The programme also features the Sonata in D D850, also composed in 1825, and the Drei Klavierstücke D946, written just six months before Schubert’s life was tragically cut short.

Celebrated tenor Mark Padmore performs with the Britten Sinfonia in a programme of some of the most beautiful English music for strings and voice. The centrepiece of the concert is Britten’s Serenade. Padmore also sings Purcell songs as realised by Tippett, whose baroque-inspired Little Music is also featured. PORGy AND BESS WITH ABRAM WILSON

ENDELLION STRING QUARTET

An evening of music inspired by one of the great jazz albums of all time. Abram Wilson and the University of Southampton’s Progression Ensemble will recreate the lush sound-world of the famous Miles Davis/Gil Evans recording which includes seminal pieces such as Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So. The concert will also include works from leading contemporary writers, including a new work by Southampton-based composer Andy Fisher.

Concert presented by the Music Department of the University of Southampton in association with Turner Sims.

A programme of three masterpieces for string quartet, opening with Beethoven’s own fascinating arrangement of his Op 14 No 1 Piano Sonata. Brahms laboured under the shadow of Beethoven’s quartets and destroyed many of his own before finding his voice utterly convincingly in Op 51. Beethoven’s Op 127 is the first late quartet and one of the composer’s most warmly lyrical.

EUCO are joined by the distinguished Russian pianist Nikolai Demidenko for Mozart’s youthful concerto, described by Alfred Brendel as the composer’s first great masterpiece. Elgar’s ever popular serenade opens the programme which also marks Liszt’s anniversary year with a performance of his evocative work, inspired by the ringing of the Angelus bells which the composer heard while living in Rome.

Ralph Towner sounds like no other guitarist. An original member of Oregon, ‘70s pioneers fusing jazz, folk and world music, Towner plays classical and baritone guitar with rare grace. Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu shares the adventurous spirit with the elegance of early Miles Davis. The pair follows the release of their ravishing new ECM album Chiaroscuro with an evening of extraordinary duets.

Sunday 13 March – 3pm

The Florestan Trio are one of the world’s great piano trios, renowned for their concert performances and award-winning recordings on the Hyperion label. This concert features one of Haydn’s most difficult trios, named after its dedicatee. This sprightly, good-natured work displays the composer’s easygoing inventiveness, as well as featuring a demanding, virtuosic part for the pianist. Dvorák’s Trio is a more serious, stormy work, showing a more Brahmsian, romantic side to the composer.

FLORESTAN TRIO

Téa Hodžic’s startling and evocative voice has enchanted audiences from Womad to the South Bank to Sarajevo. In this trio Téa explores the songs of her homeland, the former Yugoslavia, and its bordering countries. With virtuoso musicians on violin and accordion, a few instrumental fireworks are inevitable! Building on the success of the Balkan super-group Szapora, the Téa Hodžic Trio create music that is intimate, passionate and irresistible.

If anyone personifies the new Africa, with its need to balance the demands of modernism and tradition, it’s elegant Senegalese singer, Baaba Maal. An imperious figure with an intellectual and spiritual cast that contradicts his wild stage dancing, Maal’s status across West Africa is somewhere between Dylan and Marley; simultaneously folk hero, pop star and social conscience. The vision extends beyond music. Rooted in a desire for African empowerment, enlightenment and unity, Maal embodies a widespread ongoing endeavour for global peace.

BACH’S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS

£18, concessions £17, Friends £16.20, students £9

One of Bach’s greatest masterpieces, the Goldberg Variations were dedicated to the composer’s friend Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who needed a piece of music to help put his insomniac master to sleep at night. First published in 1741 and originally composed for harpsichord, the Goldbergs have since been performed and recorded by an array of instruments and combinations. This evening sees Fretwork, hailed by the Evening Standard as the finest viol consort on the planet, present their acclaimed interpretation of this incredible work.

If any one musician epitomises the essence of the jazz spirit, then it has to be Joe Lovano. Rooted in the jazz mainstream through a background that included touring with the Woody Herman Herd, he’s played with many of the music’s giants including Hank Jones and McCoy Tyner. As leader of his band US Five, he drives a joyously swinging, two-drummer quintet with irresistible vigour and commitment.

Composer, teacher, conductor and professional musician, Frank Bridge was one of the most significant figures in British music in the first half of the twentieth century. His compositions include many orchestral and vocal works and a large amount of chamber music. To mark the 70th anniversary of his death Turner Sims presents a three-concert series focussing on Bridge’s four string quartets. Spanning the whole of his compositional life, they mark the very pinnacle of his achievement, and are played by the Maggini Quartet, themselves renowned for their interpretations of British repertoire. The works will be presented alongside music by the composer’s peers and his sole pupil, Benjamin Britten.

The opening concert places the lyrical second quartet, written against the backdrop of the First World War, alongside the third, the language of which reflects Bridge’s affinity with Bartók and Berg but also Beethoven. One of the latter’s Op 18 works opens the concert.

Turner Sims is grateful to the Radcliffe Trust for their support of this concert.

This lecture includes extracts on the piano, recordings and projections.

NB: Lecture lasts 70 minutes without an interval.

Alfred Brendel writes: In this lecture I shall first speak about performance in general and then examine various aspects in detail such as sound, articulation, notation, rhythm or character. Some performance habits will be assessed as to their relevance to the works, as well as to our present day ears and needs.

DANUTuesday 14 June – 8pm

Danú are back in the UK at last. Since their last tour here 5 years ago, they have been as active as ever, developing new material and touring in Ireland, Europe and America. Now they return to the UK with a new album – Seanchas – and a short run of dates that has been much-awaited. Their repertoire remains a carefully selected mix of traditional and new material, with their trademark complexity of sound, as they explore the endless possibilities within Irish music. Bursting with energy, subtlety and irresistible rhythm, their reputation as one of today’s leading bands anywhere in Irish music worldwide has been hard-earned and well-deserved.
