Task Card 1

Get with one partner to complete the tasks in this PBL. Remember, when you have something to write on paper, that you BOTH must write and turn in a copy of your own!

Go to www.brainpop.com and view the video “Civil War”

This will give you a brief review of this war, which will be good background information for your novel.

After reading chapter 1 in the novel, write down these figurative language phrases on a sheet of paper and identify what theyare. (simile, idiom, etc.)

1. These flashes were silent, like suddenly blossoming red flowers.”

2. “Suddenly, her face crumpled like an old piece of cloth.”

3. “I think I will go talk to Aunt Marilla sometime later on and see how the wind blows.”

4. “She’s got a temper hot as fire.”

5. “All at once, her face went poker-stiff.”

Now, look throughout chapter 1 with your partner, and find 2 more examples of figurative language and add them as #5 and #6 on your paper and turn it in.

Write the following questions on a piece of paper, and answer with textual evidence. (Focus: Inferencing/Check for Understanding)

1. Is, Quantrill, who Hanalee meets one night, a Confederate, and Yankee, or neither? Explain your choice and use textual evidence for support.

At the end of this chapter, Hannalee points out, “I could see that Rosellen had changed up here in Yankee land. It wasn’t just her new clothes. She was different in ways I couldn’t put my finger on.”

2. Find at least TWO examples in the text of this chapter to show how Rosellen has changed.

3. Hanalee learns that Sherman is leaving atlanta and heading to savannah. What was this event actually called? (Remember from your SS unit!)
