The Christian Church of Midland Exists to Make More and Better Disciples

I love the Story of Christmas. I mean the real Story of Christmas. The Christmas Story is filled with

mystery, intrigue, deceit, murder, and suspense. It reads like a Jason Bourne novel. Who is this child

that brings such controversy into the world? Wait Steve, I thought that Jesus brings peace to the

world. Isn’t that what the angel said in the Gospel of Luke? The angel did say, “on earth peace to

men on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). That’s true, God’s peace, or salvation, is given to men.

Jesus does bring salvation to a sinful world.

However, the Story of Christmas raises all kinds of questions. The questions would cause controversy

in our modern Christmas plays. I’d like to share a couple of questions for you to think about and

meditate upon. Joseph and Mary went back to Bethlehem, Joseph’s home town, for the Roman

Census while Mary was ready to give birth to Jesus. Assuming that Joseph had family in his

hometown, why didn’t his family make space for Mary? Why did she have to give birth in a barn

filled with animals? There were probably several animals in the area because of the travelers. Why

didn’t one of the guests help the pregnant Mary? Wasn’t that a violation of Jewish customs of the

time? Just wondering.

What exactly did Joseph do the night of Jesus birth? Did he sit outside with the other men while Mary

gave birth? No! Joseph probably delivered Jesus, was the soothing voice in Mary’s ear as she had

contractions. He probably found the cleanest hay and made the bed for Mary and the baby. Joseph is

the forgotten character in the Christmas Story. A righteous man who obeyed God even among the

scorn and ridicule of his coworkers, friends, and family. I admire him. He was a faithful example for

all of us today.

I have several other questions about this scandalous story. We will study the story that most of us

know so well, or at least we think we know the story. I want to challenge you to read the story again,

for the first time. I also want to see you with a friend in church services this Sunday. Don’t get so

busy celebrating Jesus’ birth that you forget about worshipping with His Family on His Day around

His table.

See You Sunday,

3 PEOPLE 1 TIME A DAY FOR 6

DAYS

Pray For: Our Relationship

Our Conversation

Their Response

Prayer Card When we have an emergency, we call 9-1-1. When we

want to dig in our yard, we call 8-1-1. When we need

information, we call 4-1-1. This year we want everyone

who comes to CCM to practice 1-1-1. At a minimum

we want you in:

1 hour of worship each week.

1 hour of Bible Study each week.

1 hour of Christian Service each week.

This Fall we are attempting to “Fill Up The Wall” in the Education Hallway. Each week we will be given a new challenge so that we can impact our neighborhoods.

After finishing the challenge, please fill out a Challenge Card located at the Welcome Center or in the Sanctuary in the cups on the tables or in the seat back pockets of

the chairs. Please turn in the cards at the Welcome Center or place in the offering plate

This month as a Church family we would like the Church to read Matthew 6:9-15 (The Model Prayer), everyday, think about the verses, and pray that the Lord’s will be done at

CCM. Pray that God will clearly give you an opportunity to pray

for one person.

Sudden news is almost always bad news. If you are awakened at

3:00 a.m. by the ringing of the phone or a knocking on your door,

you think the worst. What happened? Has a loved one had an

accident? What's wrong? Those questions race through our minds.

But not that night. The sudden news from the angel was "Good

news for all people." The good news became classic news. Join us

as we celebrate the "Good News" that the shepherds received that

night. The sudden news is good news for us.

Christmas Eve Service Saturday, December 24th at 5:30 p.m. CCM will have a service that will help us remember why we

celebrate Christmas. The service will help us stop from the hustle and running and busyness to

remember the “one who was born, Immanuel, God with us.” Take time to remember one more thing,

invite a neighbor, friend, and family member to join you.

New Wednesday Format begins January 4, 2017 CCM will begin a new ministry called, Wednesday ReNew in January 2017. We will begin with a

fellowship meal at 6:00 p.m. The new format begins at 6:30 p.m. Take time to be refreshed and Re-

Newed each Wednesday.

Take A Day To Pray Saturday, December 31, 2016 (New Years Eve) from 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. CCM will have a twelve

hour prayer vigil. CCM wants to end the year and begin next year seeking God’s forgiveness, bless-

ings and guidance. There is a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center located at the Fellowship Hall

Entrance.

A BIG Thank You to CCM prayer warriors, chefs and bakers for your prayers and great food while I was having

and recovering from shoulder surgery. My surgery was very successful and pain was minimal compared to what I

expected; my recovery is on target because God answers prayer. The delicious food provided meals for several

days. There’s nothing like having good friends and Church family and we appreciate it more than you know.

In His service, Teresa and Quay Clark
