Assumptions

• Future power demands will only increase

• Endangered Species Act requires improvements in salmon survival through hydropower system

• Dealing with 13 stocks of ESA salmon

• Environmental statutes/policy not likely to change

• It is virtually impossible to keep fish out of turbines

• Turbine rehabs will be needed because of aging infrastructure

Page 8: Turbine Survival Program - ALDEN Turbine Workshop/Medina and...Turbine Survival Program Overview ... (kcfs) 101 101 87.3 Reference: Hockersmith, ... • Turbines can be a viable passage

Approach

• Use and application of scientific method

• Focus on understanding the turbine environment in the context of fish

• Develop methodology to study:• Turbine geometry

• Quality flow dynamics

• Fish biology and behavior

• Developed analytical tools• Physical models of turbines and draft tubes (1:25 scale)

• Numerical models of turbines (CFD)

• Autonomous pressure & acceleration data logger (sensor fish)

What Have We Learned

• We can improve ‘quality flow’ by how we operate the turbines to reduce fish injury & mortality

• Most efficient (+/- 1%) operation not necessarily best range for safe fish passage

• Operating above the upper 1% efficiency range may be good for both fish and power generation for some turbines

• Leading edge strike is not likely the primary source of injury• Most turbine induced mortality are likely from injuries leading

to predation or latent mortality• Predation in the tailrace can be a significant factor in mortality

rates of passing smolts• Turbine survival estimates are likely biased low based on tag

effects
