A PURPOSE:-

This document is prepared to guide the operating personnel for managing the turbine side drains during a unit startup ,shutdown & normal operating condition in stage- II of NTPC /TSTPS .

B SCOPE: :-

This shall be applicable to all the 4 units of stage - II , TSTPS ( 4 X 500 MW Units ) .

C INTRODUCTION : -

Drains play an important role in any system charged with steam . This is basically provided to drain outthe condensate before charging steam in a pipeline & subsequently allows sufficient flow in the line for initial warmup . Also this allows to drain the condensate during cooling of any pipeline .Normally the big headers like MS

/CRH / HRH are provided with drain pots where the condensate is expected to collect & subsequently they aredrained by operation of these drain valves . To avoid human interventions some of the drains depending on theirlocation & importance severity they are interlocked with certain logics or instruments like level switches & so on .

If the condensate is not properly drained & steam is charged into a line , then it will lead to severehammering in the line causing major damages & sometime forced outage of the units due to failure of thesupport system . Hence due care is to be taken while operating these drains .

Each Motor Operated drain is provided with a manual isolating valve for isolation of the drain valvedepending on requirement . But in case of MAW 11 drain valve no isolation valve is provided . However a bypassline with 6-10 mm orifice is provided for continuous bleeding .Some systems are provided with orifice operatedcontinuous drains for continuous bleeding of steam /condensate .At some places drains are provided with steam draintraps which should always be kept in service .

D OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS :

The following instructions are to be followed during the Unit normal operation , Unit Hot & Cold start-up &Unit shutdown conditions .

D-1 Normal Operation :-

•  Always ensure the SLC drain is kept “ ON “.

•  Check all the Drain MOV ( Motor Operated Valve) are manually tightened and no passing is observedindicated by high temp at the down stream of the MOV checked either through online measurement orthrough Temp Gun at local .

•  If the temp is maintaining very HI (Suspected Passing) then the manual valve for the MOV can be keptclosed with proper record in the Log Book as well as the information to be made available in soft form .

•  Necessary WOC to be raised for such drains .

D-2 Unit start-up Operation :-

D-2.1 Hot Start-up

D-2.1.1.  The Alternate drains connected to UFT are not to be opened at all such as .( BP 101 ,BP 102,MS 419,MS 101,MS 102,HRH 101,HRH 102,HRH 604 )D-2.1.2.  Check the following turbine drains are opened as per SLC logic after the Unit Has tripped out .

are opened as per the list attached as soon the unit has tripped .D-2.1.6.  Now ensure the temperatures are picking up down stream of the drain as soon as soon as steam flow established

( where ever on line measurement provided)D-2.1.7.  Now as the turbine rolling started the MS/HRH Strainers drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106  gets closed at step

D-2.2 Absolute Cold / Warm Start-up .D-2.2.1.  While pulling Vacuum keep the drains connected to vacuum system closed for faster pulling of vacuum . Then

slowly open one by one as per requirement .D-2.2.2.  Never operate both the main & alternate drain valve simultaneously , this will lead to vacuum drop in the system .D-2.2.3.  Ensure the manual valves of following drains connected to the UFT / SDFT /FB-1& FB -2 / LP & HP FT are opened

as per the list attached before charging MS Line .D-2.2.4.  The atmospheric drain s provided in MS /CRH / HRH l ine are to be kept open ( Crack ) for initial charging MS line

/ HP & LP Bypass system for release of condensate . They are to be closed after ensuring sufficient steam flow .D-2.2.5.  The Alternate drains to UFT are to be kept open initially for better Silica control in the Unit .D-2.2.6.  The Header Drains of MS/CRH/HRH Such as MS 417/419 , HRH 606/604 , CRH 501 are to be kept open till 20 %

steam Flow .D-2.2.7.  The MS/HRH Strainers drains MS 105/106 & HRH 105/106  are to be kept opened till rolling of TG set .D-2.2.8.  Check the following turbine drains are opened as per SLC logic before TG Set Rolling

D-2.2.10.  For Charging HP/LP Bypass the HPBP Warm up Line Drains

D-2.2.11.  Normally the drains are kept closed as soon as sufficient steam flow is established in the system . Such as
