Just letting everyone know that TAFE Open Day is on this Saturday, 20th August at Ourimbah Campus.

This is a great opportunity to speak face to face with staff and attend presentations and information sessions.

Plan-it-Youth held its Presentation morning tea this Tuesday, and the students involved stood tall and admirably expressed what they had gained on both a personal and vocational level from their involvement on the program.

Thank you to the parents who came and supported their child. It was great to see you on campus.

Week 10 of Term 2, finally saw Support Unit students from Tumbi Umbi Campus head out to the Challenge Ranch at Somersby for our 2011 camp.

Students spent 3 days challenging themselves with many fun activities, including ‗flying‘ down the flying fox at great speeds, climbing the walls of the indoor rock climbing centre, testing their accuracy with a bow and arrow, abseiling down the 25 metre wall (in the rain!!), balancing on the high ropes, supporting one another on the low ropes, playing spotlight, toasting marshmallows on the campfire and lying in their sleeping bags listening to the entertaining stories of the story teller. It was a fun three days which our students will remember for a long time to come. Thankyou to all of the parents who helped with packing their child‘s bags – twice! And a big thankyou to Mrs Livingston, Mrs Izzard, Mr Maguire and Mr Davis who gave up their time to come away with us.

On the 28th of June, students Year 9 Food technology were given the opportunity to participate in an in-school banquet lunch from The Lantern Palace Chinese Restaurant.

This was an enrichment activity to go with our unit of work ―Aussie Grub‖, where students learnt about traditional bush tucker and today‘s multicultural cuisine. Students enjoyed an entrée of spring rolls and dim sims, followed by sweet and sour pork, chicken chow mein, beef with oyster sauce, lemon chicken, and finished off with fortune cookies.

Congratulations to Year 9 Food Technology students for the excellent presentation of this

practical task!

Tumbi Talks - Term 3 - Week 5

Well what can I say….It was amazing!! With Mr Barron behind the wheel of our mini bus (or Wilbur as he was affectionately known) we waved goodbye at 530am. We were off!! A mere 12 hours later we had arrived at the Treasure Island Caravan Park on the Gold Coast. It was an early night after dinner as we had to prepare for Movie World the next day.

We arrived at Movie World in the morning, ready to attend our Drama Workshop. This was an invaluable experience for the students as they got to participate in Drama activities and find out about the people behind the scenes. The workshop was filmed and will definitely be coming out at the Year 10 Formal!

Day two saw us return to Movie World for our education tour but due to a miscommunication we had to abandon plans and ended up enjoying a little bit of retail therapy at Harbour Town. The afternoon was spent around the caravan park enjoying an array of activities from Putt Putt, swimming in one of the three pools, jumping on the air balloon or just getting ready for our night at Dracula‘s Theatre Restaurant.

Dracula‘s Theatre Restaurant was the highlight for everyone. From the moment we got there everyone was in shock. The actors were outside in full hair and make up greeting everyone and after shuffling us into a tiny room we were directed down a small corridor. By this stage the kids were scared and Jessie was having a fit. The corridor led us to the ghost train that took us to the restaurant. Little did we know that we were being filmed as we rode the ghost train. When they lowered a screen and started projecting the footage during intermission we soon realised our scares were for everyone to see. After our three course meal we sat back and watched the cabaret show. The actors were outstanding and we all enjoyed every second. Highlights included when Jesse was sung to by Frankenstein because he thought Jesse was Justin Bieber, Emily was accused of checking herself out in the mirrors and Jessie and Kayla‘s ghost train reactions. In Term 4 Year 10 Drama are putting on a Theatre Restaurant so watch out for your invitations!

The drive home was very sad as our trip had come to an end! We are already thinking about next years trip so you know it was a success when that happens.

Thank you again to everyone who made this trip possible it was something that the students will never forget.

Most Science classes have completed the fifth topic for the year. Many students will be completing topic tests to gauge their progress so far. Students should be in the process of making summaries of these topics, to assist in studying, plus all other topics as they have completed to ensure they are ready for assessment tasks and for the Yearly Exams.

Year 10 are especially busy having just completed their Skills Assessment and preparing for the Trial School Certificate during Week 10 this term. All other year groups will also sit for their Yearly exams at the end of Term 3 or the beginning of Term 4.

The Science department have organised a number of excursions during this Term. Year 10 had the opportunity of seeing ―Planet of the Apes‖ as part of their unit on evolution, while Year 7 have ―Snake Tails‖ incursion on 6/9/2011 to assist their understanding of adaptations of living things.

Homework Centre is a very useful aid for students needing some individual attention, especially for year 10 revision for the School Certificate. Teachers have set previous SC exams, accessed on the BOS website, to prepare students for this exam. Please encourage your child to use this resource on a Wednesday afternoon.

Students and Teachers from Kashima High School in Japan, are currently visiting Tumbi Campus this week. They are staying with

families from our campus during this time. One of the main objectives of the trip for the Japanese students, is to improve their English speaking

skills. They have been very busy participating in various activities around the Central Coast and at the campus.

They loved the Reptile Park and meeting the ―cute‖ Australian animals. They are all very happy to be in such a wonderful country! They have

been overwhelmed by the kindness and welcoming spirit the students of Tumbi have demonstrated. This exchange program enables the

students from Tumbi to enhance their cultural awareness as well as the students from Japan. This visit will strengthen our relationship with our

friends from Japan, and enable the Sister City program to run long into the future.

Our Tumbi Reds team consisting of Brodie, Taylor, Logan and Ginny are through to the quarter finals and will compete against Wadalba H.S. Newcastle Herald Competition A talented group of 15 students have been working feverishly on Tumbi's entry to the 'Newcastle Herald School Newspaper Com-petition'. The students were required to put their journalist caps on and investigate 7 different issues impacting our local community and school. Some of this year's stories focused on the 'Take 3' Initiative and Tumbi Campus’s leading role as a Microsoft School. In late August the students will be participating in a fun, hands-on day at the Fairfax Newspaper print factory in Beresfield, where they will see news come to life in print. Good luck young journalists!

WHAT DID YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIES STUDENTS THINK OF THEIR WORK EXPERIENCE IN A CHILDCARE CENTRE?

Louise said: It helped me to become more confident for public speaking and I learnt how to deal with children.

Melissa said: I think this experience was one of the best things I've done in my life. I learnt about the daily routines of a preschool. This experience helped me to decide what career path I would like to head in and working with kids is great. I think this is a career I'm very excited about pursuing.

Aimee said: This experience has taught me so much about the kids and childcare. I learnt heaps and would definitely do it again. I didn't realise the commitment and effort required to be a childcare worker. I love kids. They make me smile, and when they are cheeky I can have fun with it.

Breanna said: A really good experience. It was a hands-on look at what I've been learning in class and has opened me up the idea of maybe becoming a teacher. It helped me to build up confidence to speak in front of a class.

Jessica said: This was a really good experience that I really enjoyed. I loved talking to the kids and hugging a child while I read a story.

Mikayla said: I enjoyed every minute. I loved the atmosphere. It was so loving and friendly. The staff are like one big family. I would have like to stay longer.

I met new people, I had fun and I got to see what it would be like to work in childcare. I am interested in having a career in childcare because I enjoyed this experience so much.

Kodie said: Feeding the little kids was worthwhile, watching and looking after the children was interesting. It was enjoyable.

Vanessa said: It was a fantastic experience. I loved playing with and helping the kids. I loved working with the staff. I am definitely considering childcare as a career option. I loved learning about each child, feeding them, playing with them, picking them up and putting them to sleep.

Rianna said: It was a fun and enjoyable experience. The children were polite and nice. The teachers were friendly and supportive of me when I was learning new things. It was fun and exciting.

Jade said: I loved seeing the kids smile, interacting with the kids and learning about them. I really enjoy working with children and I'm prepared to do whatever is necessary to improve my skills in order to pursue a career in childcare.

Karlee said: This experience was worthwhile because it helped me realise that I would like to do this as a career. I learnt how to deal with children when they are misbehaving. I learnt a lot. I love the thought of making an impact on a child early in their life.

Boys Wellbeing Program

As part of the ongoing Wellbeing program at Tumbi Umbi Campus, all our boys were put through a Rock and Water challenge. The aim of the Rock and Water program is to build self-control, self-reflection and self-confidence in young male students. The session was led by Mr Brailey who gave the boys strategies for staying ―in control‖ in stressful and frustrating situations. This was then followed by a practical and physical activity based upon balance and staying in control, both physically and mentally. Congratulations to Dylan Risby (Yr 10) and Dylan Rackley (Yr 7) who were the champions of the-se challenges.

Tumbi Talks - Term 3 - Week 5

Lateness can be a problem for many school. "So what if my child is sometimes late for school - does it matter that much?"

Take a few seconds to read this and see what you think! School is usually the first place where children are made aware of the importance of regular timekeeping. Arriving early will boost your child's confidence for the day, and set them in the right frame of mind for learning and achievement.

If a child arrives late the whole class is disrupted and the teacher has to repeat the same things over and over again-losing valuable teaching time or the child completely misses out on information.eg daily student notices.

Punctuality and good attendance will always be important—at school now and later at work.

Help to make sure your child is given a good start in life by coming to school regularly and on time.

\

Why are children late for school?

Overslept

Late night

School clothes unprepared

Preparing breakfast for themselves or others

Dawdling on the way to school

Calling for friends

Stopping off at the shops

Missed the bus

Waiting for parents to drive them

Now for the legal bit:

If your child is late after the 8:00am bell has rung, it is classed as a partial absence and as such: The law in NSW places the responsibility on parents to ensure their child is enrolled at a government or non-government school and attends the school when teaching is provided (or is registered for home schooling). Under Section 22 of the Education Act 1990 parents have a legal duty to ensure their school-aged children attend school. The NSW Department of Education and Communities has developed strategies to support all government school students‘ regular attendance at school.

However, if the reasons given for your child's irregular school attendance are not satisfactory, then the NSW Department of Education and Communities may take legal proceedings against you for failure to comply with the Law. This may result in a court case with fines up to $11,000.

Considering all this - Does it matter?

Mrs T. McInnes Head Teacher Wellbeing

WELLBEING PROGRAMS

HORTICULTURE PROJECT

During Term 2 a group of Year 10 students were involved in a hands-on skills in horticulture and basic landscaping project . Tumbi Umbi Campus partnered with Housing NSW and youthconnections.com.au in this project.

This project was developed to assist participants to develop self esteem, cooperation, collaboration and communication skills, while also making a positive contribution to their local community. Students learnt to propagate plants, plan, plant and landscape areas for gardens in Killarney Vale, Bateau Bay and Tumbi Umbi .

DRUMBEAT

During Terms 1 and 2, 20 Year 7 students participated in a Drumbeat Program with the Samaritans team of Renee and John. The Drumbeat Program, using the African Djembe drum, engages young people quickly through music and provides a sense of connectedness with self and others. The program assists participants to develop self esteem, cooperation, collaboration and communication skills without feeling threatened, misunderstood or judged.

During the first week of August, over 1000 students from 234 schools put their balsa wood, string cardboard and glue-based bridge designs to the test across seven locations in Australia and two in New Zealand in the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition.

The TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus Team of Brian Gardner, Aaron Harvey and Adam Withers headed off to smash their bridge at the Art Gallery of NSW on Friday 5

th of August.

―The range of designs we saw and the innovation exhibited by the students made me very proud to be an engineer,‖ said Aurecon‘s William Cox, General Manager – Australia and New Zealand.

At each venue around the country, students, teachers and organisers cheered each other on as individual bridges were loaded with weight.

―With ongoing severe shortages of technical and engineering skills in Australia, the aim of the bridge building competition is to show students at an early stage, when they can still choose science and maths electives, that these subjects can be fun and challenging,‖ said Mr Cox.
