DISCREETNESS SHOWS GRIT IN SMARTY JONESBy Tom LaMarra

Discreetness, winner of the Springboard Mile in

his first start around two turns, followed up with

another two-turn victory in the Smarty Jones Stakes

for 3-year-olds Jan. 18 at Oaklawn Park.

The one-mile race provided Discreetness 10

points on the "Road to the Kentucky Derby." Dwight

Pruett's Xpress Thoroughbreds purchased the Dis-

creet Cat colt out of the Elusive Quality mare Fond-

ness for $105,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s

March 2-year-olds in training sale.

Discreetness, trained by William "Jinks" Fires

and ridden by Jon Court, sat third most of the way,

launched his bid on the far turn, and inched past

a stubborn Gordy Florida. Heavily favored three-

time stakes winner Toews On Ice dueled with Gordy

Florida most of the way and faltered in the stretch.

Synchrony rallied nicely for third.

"We felt we could be competitive in this race," Pru-

ett said, "and we have a nice horse apparently."

The goal for Discreetness is the April 16 Arkansas

Derby (gr. I). Other local preps are the Feb. 15 Southwest

Stakes (gr. III) and March 19 Rebel Stakes (gr. II). BH

NO TIME TO REST FOR TEAM PHAROAHBy Ron Mitchell

There was no time to rest for the connections

of unanimous Horse of the Year and champion

3-year-old male American Pharoah following Sat-

urday's late-night conclusion of the Eclipse Awards

ceremony as they left the following day for Lon-

don, England.

The Zayat family, whose Zayat Stables received

outstanding breeder and owner awards, along

with the family of trainer Bob Baffert, who secured

his fourth Eclipse, and regular jockey Victor Espino-

za departed South Florida late Jan. 17 on a transat-

lantic flight to London, where the Longines World's

Best Racehorse for 2015 will be announced Jan. 19.

American Pharoah, Triple Crown and Breeders'

Cup Classic (gr. I) winner, is likely to be crowned

the world's best racehorse as he led the standings

last released at the end of November.

"Being named the best racehorse in the world

would be a huge statement," Justin Zayat, who also

squeezed in a friend's wedding over the weekend,

said via text message. "This isn't just America; it's

an international award, which is an unbelievable

honor for us." BH

Nearly 200 horses, ranging from broodmares

and horses of racing age to yearlings and

2-year-olds, will be offered Jan. 20 at Barretts

mixed sale, which is highlighted by sire power

from both California and nationally.

The sires represented include champi-

on Acclamation and millionaire Coil, both of

whom stand in California, and Kentucky-based

champion Shanghai Bobby. Their first foals are

2-year-olds of 2016. Awesome Again, City Zip,

Distorted Humor, Flower Alley, Giant's Cause-

way, Lucky Pulpit, Smarty Jones, Square Eddie,

Tapit, and Unusual Heat are among the proven

sires with cataloged horses.

The sale, which begins at 11 a.m. PST and will

be held at Del Mar for the first time, features a

consignment dispersing horses of the late E.W.

"Buddy" Johnston owned in partnership with

Patsy Berumen. Andy Havens' Havens Blood-

stock Agency is handling the group.

Johnston, a longtime major California owner

and breeder, died last year. Several of the part-

nership's horses were sold at the 2015 Barretts

fall yearling and mixed sale. BH

GODOLPHIN HAS NUMBERS AT TATTERSALLSBy Clive Webb-Carter

Tattersalls has cataloged 387 lots—more than

60 from Godolphin—for its Feb. 4 mid-winter

mixed sale.

The Godolphin offerings include winning

3-year-old Soofiah, a sister to the Dubai Duty Free

(UAE-I) winner Sajjhaa; Doldrums, a half sister to

grade I winner Vacare in foal to Exceed And Excel;

and Desert Sunrise, a half sister to the Middle

Park Stakes (Eng-I) winner Primo Valentino in foal

to Iffraaj.

Juddmonte, whose drafts attract plenty of interest,

offers 18 lots, including Midst, a sister to group III win-

ner Flying Jib, a daughter of grade II winner Jibboom.

The February sale, which grossed 2,586,100

guineas and averaged 12,597 guineas in 2015, has

notable graduates. Beverly. D Stakes (gr. IT) winner

Euro Charline was pinhooked as a foal in 2012 while

Fashionable, dam of last year's Irish Oaks (Ire-I) run-

ner-up Jack Naylor, was sold at the same sale.

Other prominent purchases include Green

Room and Kheleyf's Silver, the dams of grade/

group I winners Together Forever and Tiggy Wiggy,

respectively. BH

RACING

IN SEARCH OF A PATH FORWARD

For too many years the stated interests of

horseplayers—lower pari-mutuel takeout and

effective drug testing—have been at odds with

the presumed best interests of Thoroughbred

owners.

The conventional wisdom said relief for bet-

tors could come only at the expense of owners,

and vice versa. You would think the two groups

had never met, even though their futures are

inextricably linked. Bettors and owners share a

common problem: an ebb tide in betting handle

causing all boats to run aground.

Like many other vast undertakings, Ameri-

can racing comprises various distinct groups,

ranging from low-paid grooms and hot walkers

on the backside to highly compensated CEOs

and racing secretaries in the corner offices. The

top tiers of racing's "talent pyramids" also do

very well while journeymen jockeys and trainers

combine with racetrack middle management

and members of the Turf press to form racing's

own version of a nervous and shrinking middle

class.

If these groups—the racing connection

aside—are quite disparate, they all

receive one important benefit from

the game: a paycheck. Outside of the

occasional unadulterated joys and the

regularly occurring crushing heart-

aches, the only guarantee that racing

provides to both horse owners and

horse bettors is a loss of capital.

"There are two groups in racing

whose rights should be considered,"

Hall of Fame trainer Jim Fitzsimmons,

by way of Red Smith, said in the New

York Herald-Tribune in 1963. "There

are people who furnish the actors for

the show, the owners with the costly

stables. And there is the public that

furnishes the money. Both of them got to lose,

no chance in the world to break even."

While this world has seen many amazing

improvements over the last 50-odd years, the

overall unprofitability of horse owning and

horse betting is not among them. Statistics

show that the wealthy do still enjoy a tenden-

cy to become even wealthier over time, which

must help to soften the blow when increases in

purses fail to keep pace with the rising cost of

hay, oats, and workers' compensation. But until

the arrival of that magical time when racetracks

start donating "take-in" rather than exacting

takeout, horseplayers as a group will never be

profitable.

For racing to thrive once more, it's impor-

tant that owners and horseplayers recognize a

shared goal: big purses attracting large fields of

drug-free horses sparking massive betting pools

with low takeout allowing for better payouts

while the larger handle keeps purses healthy.

Blended takeout rates have effectively doubled

since the days of "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons.

The goal may seem dubious, but allowing

horseplayers to lose money as slowly as they

once did is the key to racing's future. BH
