Notes about the daily excursions and evening events

5th September (Monday): Arriving delegates will have the opportunity to meet fellow Congress delegates at El Pósito, Linares. Registration opens from 18:00.

6th September (Tuesday): El Centenillo is a lead mining town in the hills to the west of la Carolina. It was successfully worked by the Haselden family (British) who managed a succession of British registered Companies between 1887 and 1921. Remains include several Cornish type engine houses and dressing floors. La Carolina was established in 1767 by King Carlos III as a ‘Nuevas poblaciones’ to repopulate the area with Central European settlers. Later the town became a lead mining centre and several lead smelters were located in the town. There are also rock paintings close by with World Heritage status. La Carolina museum contains exhibits that describes the town’s history. La Aquisgrana is an old mining area (La Rosa mine) and exhibits the remains from several mines that include chimneys and a bridge. The evening Civic Reception will be held at the old Madrid Railway Station, now a mining interpretation centre, located on the north-eastern edge of Linares near the bullring. Delegates will have the opportunity to inspect the exhibits. (Drinks and Tapas)

7th September (Wednesday): Visit to the British-operated mine at Pozo Ancho (operated by John Taylor and Sons) with Cornish type engine houses dating back to 1849. La Cruz mine was operated by a French company. There are extensive ruinous remains of their lead smelting works , the largest in the district. The evening excursion involves a short journey by coach to the neighbouring town of Guarromán for dinner, and a flamenco performance, the music of Andalucía.

8th September (Thursday): The day will start with a visit La Esmeralda and Briones shafts at the Adaro mine, and El Cobre mine, on the extreme west of the Linares mining field. El Cobre, and the adjacent Matacabras mine, were the last mines to work in the 1990s. Morning coffee will be taken at the mine site. The prominent Moorish castle, that overlooks earlier Roman mine workings, and the Torreón del Recuerdo Ethnographic Museum, both at Baños de la Encina, will be visited before lunch. After lunch at the Hotel de Baños, the lecture sessions will be held at the ‘Aula Magna’ of E.P.S. Linares Campus of the University de Jaén, on the east side of Linares. The lectures will conclude with the International Mining History Congress Business meeting. This is an opportunity for bids to be made to hold a future International Mining History Congress, and discuss any aspects of IMHC management or organisation. The evening event with tapas will be held locally in Linares and includes an exhibition of local mining art and a typical ‘Chirigota’ performance. A coach will return delegates to the town square.

9th September (Friday): The excursion will be to the Roman site of Cástulo located close to Linares. This was a Roman city that controlled the extensive Roman mining activity in the area. Recent excavations have exposed mosaics and other Roman artifacts, housed in the archaeological museum in Linares. There is a small visitor centre at Cástulo with displays. The site was later occupied by the Moors. The afternoons lecture programme will conclude with a Poster session Delegates will be given vouchers for tapas, and will be encouraged to explore Linares in the evening, taking in some of the tapas bars.

10th September (Saturday): The morning visit will include the San Miguel vein, and San Guillermo and San Vicente shafts, and La Tortilla mine and foundry. From the top of the recently conserved San Guillermo stone head-frame, delegates will be able to have a clear view across the Linares mining district. There are various memorials to miners killed in the mines attached to the stone walls around the shafts. La Tortilla was operated by Thomas Sopwith junior and has significant remains of a lead smelting works including a shot tower. The afternoons lectures will conclude the Congress, and there will be a session to discuss any aspects concerning the extensive mining remains of Linares and La Carolina. For example, how best to conserve them.? In the evening a Congress dinner will be held in a local venue.

All lunches, the Congress dinner, some tapas, as well as coach travel for the above programme are included in the Congress registration fee. At some venues delegates may be required to purchase their own drinks and extra tapas.

11th September (Sunday): This is a full day excursion to Alquife mine and Granada. Delegates who wish to go on this trip MUST be pay for it at the IMHC Reception by the 7th September, excepting delegates arriving late. The Alquife haematite mine was a major British mining undertaking. The ore was exported via the port of Almería. There are the remains of the flooded open pit as well as the mining community that housed engineers and their families. The mine closed in the 1990s and there is a considerable amount of ore processing plant left on the site. There are currently plans by Minas de Alquife S.L.U., who are hosting the visit, to reopen the mine. After lunch, the Alhambra, a Moorish palace and World Heritage site, will be visited, followed by the chance to browse gift shops and cafés adjacent to the Cathedral. The day will conclude with a visit to a gypsy cave in the Granada Albayzín district for a flamenco show, with a drink and tapas. 9

La recepción tendrá lugar en la antigua Estación de Madrid, que contiene el Centro de interpretación del Paisaje Minero, situada al noreste de la ciudad cerca de la plaza de toros. Los asistentes tendrán la oportunidad de conocer sus contenidos. (Bebidas y Tapas).

7 septiembre (Miércoles): Visita a la mina de Pozo Ancho (trabajadas por la compañía británica de John Taylor e Hijos), con casas de máquinas de tipo Cornish que datan de 1849. La Cruz fue trabajada por una compañía francesa. Conserva gran cantidad de restos de la fundición, la mayor del distrito. La excursión de la tarde incluye un corto desplazamiento en autobús a la vecina ciudad de Guarromán, para disfrutar de una cena y un espectáculo flamenco, la música típica andaluza.

8 septiembre (Jueves): El día comienza con la visita a los pozos de La Esmeralda y Briones en la mina de Adaro y a la mina de El Cobre, ambas situadas en el extremo oeste de los campos mineros de Linares, ya en el municipio de Bailén. El Cobre y la adyacente Matacabras fueron las últimas minas que trabajaron hasta la década de los 90 del siglo pasado. El café de la mañana lo tendremos en un emplazamiento minero. Antes del almuerzo visitaremos el sobresaliente castillo árabe, que domina los trabajos mineros anteriores a época romana, y el museo etnográfico del Torreón del Recuerdo en Baños de la Encina. Tras el almuerzo, en el Hotel de Baños, volveremos hasta la EPS del Campus Tecnológico de la Universidad de Jaén en Linares, en cuya Aula Magna tendrán lugar las sesiones de ponencias. Éstas concluirán con una reunión de trabajo del International Mining History Congress. En él se podrán tratar propuestas para organizar el próximo Congreso y discutir diversos aspectos de la gestión del IMHC. El acto de la tarde, con tapas y bebidas, se celebrará en un local en Linares, en el que los delegados tendrán la oportunidad de disfrutar de obras artísticas relacionadas con la minería. El regreso al centro de la ciudad se hará en autobús.

9 septiembre (Viernes): Excursión al yacimiento romano de Cástulo, cercano a Linares. Fue una ciudad ibera y romana que controló la extendida actividad minera romana en la zona. Recientes excavaciones han sacado a la luz mosaicos y otros objetos que se exponen en el Museo Arqueológico de Linares. Un pequeño centro de visitantes muestra información significativa para la visita. El lugar fue ocupado después por los árabes. Las sesiones de ponencias de la tarde finalizarán con una sesión de posters. Los delegados recibirán unos boletos con consumición de tapas que les animarán a recorrer Linares al anochecer, en busca de algunos de sus acreditados bares.

10 septiembre (Sábado): La visita matinal incluirá los pozos de San Guillermo y San Vicente en el filón de San Miguel. Desde lo alto de la cabria de mampostería de San Guillermo, recientemente consolidada, los delegados podrán disfrutar de unas claras vistas de campo minero. En sus paredes, también se encuentran lápidas en recuerdo de algunos mineros que murieron o trabaron en la zona. Despuñes la visita se extiende a las minas y fundición de La Tortilla (trabajada por Thomas Sopwith junior), que conserva casas de máquinas y significativos restos de la fundición de plomo, que incluyen una torre de perdigones. Las sesiones de trabajo de la tarde pondrán fin al Congreso, con una sesión de discusión sobre aspectos relativos al patrimonio minero del distrito Linares – La Carolina. Por ejemplo, cómo pueden ser conservados sus restos, o acerca de su posible declaración como Patrimonio de la Humanidad y las implicaciones que ésta tendría. La Cena del Congreso se celebrará en un restaurante de la localidad.

Todas las comidas, cenas y tapas, así como los desplazamientos del programa están incluidos en la cuota de inscripción. En algunos lugares los delegados pueden tener que abonar sus bebidas.

11 septiembre (Domingo): Excursión de día completo a Alquife y Granada. Los delegados que deseen asistir deberán inscribirse en la recepción, y abonar la cuota antes del día 7 de septiembre. La mina de hematita de Alquife fue una gran empresa británica. El mineral se exportaba por el puerto de Almería. Quedan restos de las cortas, así como casas para los ingenieros y sus familias. La mina cerró en la década de lo 90 del siglo pasado y queda una considerable cantidad de mineral de la planta de proceso abandonada en el lugar. Actualmente hay planes para la reapertura de la mina por Minas de Alquife S.L.U., que acogerá la visita. Después del almuerzo, se visitará la Alhambra, conjunto de palacios árabes declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Seguidamente habrá un tiempo para realizar compras y tomar café en la zona alrededor de la Catedral. El día concluirá con la asistencia a un espectáculo flamenco en el barrio del Albayzín, con bebidas y cena incluidas.
