Punctuation Ladder – embedded clauses.
What is an embedded clause?
An embedded clause adds information to a sentence.
It adds information by ‘sandwiching’ it into the sentence.
We use a comma followed by the word who, which, that or with to introduce an embedded clause.
The ferocious dog barked noisily through the hole in the fence.
The ferocious dog, who was trying to scare away the burglars,barked noisily through the hole in the fence.
Simple sentence
1. Mrs Rai was eating her dinner.
2. The dinosaur was chasing the boy.
3. The footballer was kicking the ball.
4. The baby was crying extremely loudly.
5. The monster was squeezing his spots.
Embedded clause
who was hungry
who had huge sharp teeth
who played for Man United
who was wearing a nappy
who was green and pink
Choose a simple sentence and embedded clause put them together to make a great sentence! (don’t forget your commas!)
