Funeral services for Lawrence ?utncy, :: prominent Republican, long -time Iowa legisiator -and ;·c,nncr chairrnan of the State 3oard of Social Welfare will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Octob~r J{J. 1979, at the United Methodist Church, Gladbrook. Iowa, Rev_ i!,;ward Lord, pastor. officiati ng . Friends may call at the Gc.ettschPcrrin Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Friday.
Mr. Putney died of a heart ;tt l<lck at his 1-tomc on Tl.le;;day. Cktobcr 23. He w~s 79 years old .
Mr. Putney was born in Gru.ndy Center, iowa, on l'!ovc;nbcr 3, 1899, the son of \'ViHiv.m Harris and Mary Anna Baldw~n Putney. He at~ended the Cedar Falls public schools, the University of Northem iowa and lowa State University. He was married to Gensva Eldridge on June 6, 1928.
Mr. Putney was a veteran of World War l. and a former high school principal and :1thletic coach. He c:1tcrcd private business in 1930 and was aci.ivdv engaged in hatchery, fe~d manu·f_acturing and farm supply busi~e~ses iu Gladbiook and iv1arshaii .. town until his retirement in 1955. From 1955 until his death, he managed numerous farra interests and was active in the uroduc-tion of Aberdeen Angus cattle.
A former m·ayor and councilman of Gladbrook, Mr. Putney was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1944 where he served for five terms. He was named Speaker Pro Tern of the 54th Generai Assemblj'. In 1954 Putney was elected to the State Senate and re-elected to a secor:d term in 1958_. In 1961 he was named Ch:J.irman of the State Board of Social Welfare . He complctc:d a six··year tenn as a member "of that board in 1967.
Iv!r. Putney was active m masonic affairs, a member of El Kahir Shrine, Phi Sigma Epsiion Fraternity and the · Gladbrook U!1ited {<,.kthodist. Church.
Survivors include his wife. Geneva, two sons. M;~rt( of D~~s Moines and John of Gladbrook,

A very enccrtaining pmgram wa':i presented by the Tuesday lV1usi c Club of Marshalltown. Their presentation was entitled "The Seven Stages of Woman".
