Pilot Gold (USA) Inc.GIS‐Land Database Application
Gerald HestonEsri UC, June 2016
11
• Pilot Gold is a gold exploration company with 17 projects in the western United States, Canada, and Turkey.
• More than 2400 claims, licenses, private parcels, and royalties• Numerous leases, operating agreements, and permits• Pilot Gold developed an in‐house land database application to track
all of these• Combined with ArcGIS to make up Pilot’s GIS‐Land system
Introduction
22
• Pilot Gold (and its predecessors) were losing track of agreements and due dates
• Needed a better way to remember how many claims and acres were at each project
• Bureau of Land Management LR2000 Database– BLM doesn’t have GIS service for claims anymore– BLM’s LR2000 Excel download format is unfriendly and it’s tedious to
reformat to be useful in a database or GIS– LR2000 doesn’t have the queries or reports I’d like to use
Why?
33
• Ingenis Consulting of Reno created a database and browser‐based application for entering, maintaining, and reporting all of our land data
• Pilot already had a SQL database server in our Elko office for drilling and geochemistry data
• Used our existing database infrastructure
Solution
44
• Built on SQL Server • Web app available from
anywhere• Data input and reporting
tasks– New claims– Due dates– $ amounts– Acreage
Database Application
55
• Semi‐monthly reports• Claim counts/acreages• Payments/reports due soon
Reporting
66
• LR2000 reports get reformatted and put into database tables
• Now I can create my own queries for a specific area or owner
• Display sections by count of active claims in each section
• Works with active or closed claims
ArcGIS Link
77
• Gives me instant map of sections with claims around our projects• Shows me where new claims have been staked• Use a Relate for a one‐to‐many relationship• Updates are more or less automatic using MXD and layer files
Project level
88
• View our projects with other publicly available data– Surface management/ownership– Wilderness or other restricted
areas– Water rights & hydrography– Mineral resources– Esri Base Maps
• Proprietary layers– Project boundaries– Mineral resources– Geologic data
• Great for quickly evaluating new projects/due diligence
• Monitoring competitor activity

99
• LR2000 data only works with mining claims, not private mineral rights
• There are errors in the legal descriptions in LR2000• Down to the section‐level only• There are gaps in the BLM’s township‐section coverage
Limitations
1010
• Publish land/environmental data to ArcGIS Online
• Collector– finding old claim posts or
environmental points in the field
• Improve accuracy of claim polygons in ArcGIS
• Planning new claims
Mobile Data Collection
1111
• Move to ArcGIS Server – will it be faster? • Rebuild database & application in updated SQL Server version
