Definition

• Tsunami (pronounced soo-nahm-ee) is a series of huge waves that happen after an undersea disturbance, such as an earthquake or volcano eruption. (Tsunami is from the Japanese word for harbour wave.)

Where did the disaster happen?

• 2004 Indian Ocean TsunamiA magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck off the west coast of the Indonesian Island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004 is the largest earthquake to occur in the world in 40 years.

What are the consequences?
