Last Thursday the Gobondery Shield was held at our school. It was a fabulous day,

the weather was perfect, the students were enthusiastic and played all the sports

with a high level of sportsmanship!

A big thank you needs to go to the P&C who cooked a fantastic dinner and Ms

Rowlands and her band of helpers, who provided us with the most delicious

donuts for dessert.

Principal’s

Message

here are 13 days left of school but it seems 30

days of events that need to be completed. This

outstanding public school continues to provide quality

education to the last day of term 4 so students are

expected to attend to the end of the year. Today the

Rage Program commenced for 8/10 boys. This will run

for the next three Mondays of term. Year 10 non-

compulsory work experience all week, Primary

Intensive Swimming all week, Gobondery Cup on

Thursday and Threads Out West visiting Thursday and

Friday.

Last week the voucher from Pambula Rotary club was

distributed. This is to be used at the newsagent to

help stimulate the local economy. On Thursday last

week our school hosted the Gobondery Shield. Thank

you to Mrs Sanderson for her organisation and

passion to ‘get things right’ for the students of this

school. Contrary to some people’s perception staff do

not get paid extra to organise these activities for your

children. They happen because of the goodwill of staff

such as Mrs Sanderson.

Threads Out West is a not for profit organisation and is

delivering hampers and clothing for our families on

Thursday. This is part of our drought relief efforts that

we have been involved with over the last three

months. The school will not be discriminating

between families that live in town and those that live

on farms because all people in a town such as Trundle

that has a one dimensional economy are effected by

drought. Families before the end of term will receive:

A toiletries package containing quality shampoo,

deodorant and quality perfume.

Food hampers

Gift vouchers for Target and Big W.

Christmas presents for children.

This is additional support to the town already

provided by the school. Examples include:

43,000 dollars injected into local business (more

to come).

Free showers and washing machines

Subsidisation of the reward trip this term.

Free sunglasses / hats for k-4 students.

Free access to Healthy Harrod for two years.

Primary end of year activities free.

Secondary / primary book packs

120 food hampers

400 kilograms of dog food

140 cartons of water

20 dollar vouchers to be spent in the newsagent.

Pambula Rotary Club visiting.

Musical instruments for the school

Water tanks for the school

New washing machine for the school.

The response to the call I put out to Sydney schools

has been amazing and confirms to me the true value

of public education in Australia. I had the idea and

have to a large extent been the public face of the

effort but I would like to pay tribute to my office staff

who have worked tirelessly to coordinate the

donations out to families. In addition, teaching staff

have tolerated the disruptions and continued to

deliver quality education. Our efforts to support our

community I hope has helped people through difficult

times.

Some time ago a local identity when I asked if they

would like recognition for a generous donation to the

school said ‘it is a waste of time because many of the

people that pat you on the back are just waiting for

you to take of few more steps forward for an

opportunity to kick you in the backside’. I will

remember this quote for a long time and now

completely understand the message. I hope good

people take the time to recognise the outstanding

efforts of this school to improve the facilities and

programs available to the young people of Trundle.

Indeed, next year we will grow again by 10 students

and could have up to 20 students in Year 7. This is

nothing in a larger community, but considering we had

92 students in 2014 to progress towards 130 students

just 4 years later is totally against the trend in nearby

towns and something that should be celebrated.

I am very proud of this school. Not only have we

consistently grown over the last 4 years we have

embraced the concept of continuous improvement in

terms of facilities, programs and results. Over the last

two years through the efforts of staff and community

we have improved our attendance, retention from

Year 7 to Year 12 and NAPLAN scores. The most

pleasing aspect of NAPLAN is the movement of

students from one band below to the top two bands.

This school also has our Aboriginal students at or

above our non-Aboriginal students, an outstanding

achievement. In addition, the changes in assessment

policy in High School has resulted in a significant

Page 3: Trundle Central School Newsletter · finding the money. Maybe the pokies, no they are reverse Robin Hood, they actually rob from the poor and give to the rich so I will have to look

Page 3 Term 4 Week 8

improvement in submission of completed tasks almost

95% in 2018. Just as pleasing has been the reduction

from 70 days lost through suspension between 2014-16

down to only 5 days lost this year. This indicates to me

that students want to be at school, staff are supportive

to students needs and suspension is not the only

strategy in the welfare and discipline policy. In addition,

we now have the best computer, sporting and learning

programs possible and are constantly looking for more

opportunity. The opportunities a child has should not

be defined by geography.

Our school is next to be upgraded for more computer

band width and additional Wi-Fi access and part of the

cooler classrooms programs first round roll out. This

will further improve facilities for your children. This

school and the Department of Education reflects the

ethos of equal access to education and facilities across

the whole state. Well done to the students, staff and

community of Trundle.

When I arrived in 2014 the school had a 22 seat bus.

At the time this bus was completely surplus to

requirements, needed seat belts fitted, travelled less

than 4000 kilometres per year and was costing

considerable money to maintain. Subsequently I sold

the bus and down sized to a 12 seat mini bus much to

the disgust of the various tables of knowledge in the

community. This bus travels in excess of 20,000

kilometres a year but was purchased second hand. It

will require an upgrade in the very near future costing

approximately 70,000 dollars. We could keep the bus

and save the money but I do not want our students

arriving to an activity in the worst bus but the best we

can provide as a school and community. It is simple,

students I believe perform and behave in accordance

with the image they are allowed / forced to project.

Our bus is one of the public faces of Trundle Central

School when we arrive at activities and I refuse to

project an image of old and tired. The problem is

finding the money. Maybe the pokies, no they are

reverse Robin Hood, they actually rob from the poor

and give to the rich so I will have to look to other

avenues.

The new teacher housing should be completely on line

early next year. It is disappointing that an issue with

the power supply has delayed the other two residences

being rented. However, this construction that injected

thousands into local businesses in the construction

phase has allowed at this stage two teachers to live in

town and contribute socially and financially to this

town. I am very proud that where possible my staff

choose to live locally rather than commute. This allows

them to completely understand the culture and

contribute to the wider community.

Thank you to Mrs Kim Williams and Mr Grady for

constructing our Merry Christmas signs and erecting

Christmas lights. This is not a small or token effort but

a recognition from the school that we need to

celebrate a productive but in many ways a difficult year.

I hope people decorate their houses and Trundle

embraces the end of the year as a celebration of the

gifts and opportunity this great country gives us rather

than the negatives that seem constantly forced upon us.

Research indicates a positive message needs to be

stated at least 27 times to be believed but a negative

needs to be repeated less than 10. This is why negative

people are so dangerous in our community and a

school because people listen. It never ceases to amaze

me the amount of resources and emotional energy is

allocated to negativity. I challenge people next time

they are exposed to a person’s negativity they counter

with 27 positive messages. The look on their face will

make it worthwhile and we are living the dream in

Trundle so 27 should be easy.

Recently a group of students across the state left

school to protest against climate change. Whilst I

would have preferred students to protest on a

weekend and attend school I am proud that education

is still the major driver of political and social change. It

is ironic that one of the main goals of a comprehensive

education is the establishment of lateral thought and

the ability to challenge / question established policy and

thinking but when young people actually achieve this

many want to suppress it.

Finally the quote of the year goes to Andrew Klein.

Whilst watching I believe the 1882 (sorry 1982) Grand

Final between Parramatta and Manly he said “ I was not

alive for this game but I am enjoying it because it may

be the last opportunity to see Parramatta win a

premiership”. Reality and humour at the same time.

13 days of school left and 30 days worth of activities.

Sounds about the way I want it.

John Southon

Ajax’s

Weekly Woof

Wooof Wooof awards:

4 big happy woofs to all students who are already

using their sunglasses and hats. Even Ajax puts clear

zinc on his nose to protect from the sun. A young

single guy needs to protect his skin.

5 big happy woofs to all the Primary students who

were well behaved and enthusiastic on Thursday

for the Gobondery Shield. Enjoy sport whilst you

can because you never know when an accident

could make you laid up for a few days.

4 big happy woofs to those students who ask how I

am going with my recovery. I am glad in such a

short time I have made so many friends.

5 big woofs to those students who I see out

exercising and using the pool correctly. We are

lucky to have a pool in our town. Well done to

Mitch for the way he is running the pool, friendly

but maintaining a standard.

4 loud growls to the students who leave rubbish

on the oval after soccer and cricket on Thursdays.

Southo comes home and says things such as, get rid

of soccer and close the back oval. Then he re-watches

the Sharks grand final victory and calms down.

Negative body image is often created on the thing

Southo refers to as the idiot box. I encourage all

children to accept difference and the fact that we

come in all different shapes and sizes. Even a

Labrador knows that the people on TV and magazines are not normal and often the camera

plays tricks to make them look better. I have put

on lots of weight since my accident but I am proud

of my bigger backside and curves I might even sell

advertising on my backside.

Q: What do you get when you cross a dog and a calculator?

A: A friend you can count on

Q: What kind of dog sounds like you can eat it?

A: A sausage dog!

Until next week, Ajax

Bark with laughter with

Ajax:

What happens when it rains cats and dogs?

You can step in a poodle!

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students

MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if

they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in

any outdoor activities including lunch time play. We

keep a small selection of spare hats for those

students who accidently forget their hats. These

hats are washed regularly but are not to be used

every day by the same students. We will endeavour

to call parents to let them know their child has

forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please

make sure you put your child’s name inside their

hat.

Kindergarten/Year 6 Transition This week will be the final week of Kindergarten/

Year 6 Transition sessions that will run throughout

the term.

This year the sessions will run from 8:55 – 11:20

for Preschoolers – Year 5. The Year 6 Transition

program will run from 10:00am – 12:30pm. This will allow the Pre-schoolers and Year 6 to

engage in some fantastic activities to ensure the

transition from both Preschool and Primary School

is a smooth and enjoyable experience.

All classes in primary will be moving up into the

next group for these sessions. It is a great way for

the students to practise being in a new class.

Swimming For Sport This Friday students who would normally go to the

pool at 1:00pm for sport will be going earlier at

12:00pm to allow for the intensive swimming

students to participate in two sessions. Those students who are involved in intensive swimming will need

to bring their lunch on Friday.

They may also bring a small

amount of money to buy

something from the canteen at

the pool as they will remain at the pool until

3:00pm.

Intensive Swimming Students from K-6 who are

invited to attend this year’s

intensive swimming sessions

must bring their swimmers, a

towel, sunscreen, a swim shirt

every day during the ten days,

regardless of the weather.

Assembly Please attend our Farewell Year 6 Assembly next

Friday 14th December at 11:45am in the library.

This will be our final assembly for the year. We

Trundle Film Society

Trundle Central School Students who are at least 15 year of age are welcome to apply for one of five 12 month memberships of the Trundle Film Society (valued at $100 each) through the generous sponsorship of the Trundle Services and Citizens Club. A film society is a club which chooses an annual programme of films to screen for the education and appreciation of it's members. Screenings are not open to members of the public. As an ancillary activity the Trundle Film Soci-ety also produces it's own films and aims to nurture film making skills in our community. You should see the Principal Mr John Southon by Friday 7th December if you are interested in apply-

Secondary

his week we have some Year 10 students

completing the second week of Work Experience.

It is extremely pleasing when our students head

out into the real world for these experiences and

return with new ideas and goals.

Today we have our Year 9, 10 and 11 boys

participating in the RAGE program. This program

allows our students to explore a range of positive

mechanisms for dealing with a variety of situations.

On Wednesday we are hosting the Gobondary

Cup at school. This year the competition will be

between Trundle, Tullamore and Tottenham. This

is one of the many activities that not only offer sporting competition for our students but also

increases the social interaction between our

schools and helps build a cohort for our Western

Access Program. Thanks to Mrs Morgan for her

organisation of this day.

We are heading steadily towards the end of the

year. Next week we have our presentation evening

on Tuesday and as usual the calibre of our students

has made the conversation around these decisions

very robust. It’s a pity we do not have the capacity to award more students for their effort in class but

we also do not want to diminish the focus on the

students who are achieving at the highest level. As

always we stress that these awards do not change

our perception of any student or the value we hold

on all our students, but rather, it is a celebration of

this year’s effort and creation of aspiration for

2019.

As always if there are any concerns in regards to

secondary matters please contact me at school.

Have a great week

This week’s adventures with Miss Ward This week in PE Year 7 have been practicing their table tennis skills. Xander and Cameron took out

the round robin championship with Ryan and Harrison following closely by second. During their the-

ory lessons we have been focusing on Mental Health. A special mention to Grace for showing excep-

tional computer skills when designing a PowerPoint based on mental health disorders and support

services.

Year 9-10 PE had their last lesson of lacrosse on Friday. Massive improvements were made from eve-

ryone throughout the three lessons and your participation and effort was awesome! In theory we

have been working hard covering healthy eating habits, with Bobbie taking out first place in our ka-

hoot quiz.

In Year 9-10 PASS we have moved onto a new and challenging topic of energy systems. All five of the

students should be commended on their contribution and determination to learning.

Thank you,

Miss Ward

Tiny is an eighteen-year-old girl living on the streets in Sydney, running from her

small-town past. She finds short-term accommodation at Hope Lane - a shelter for

the homeless - where she meets Nola, a high school student on volunteer

placement. Both girls share their love of words through the Hope Lane writing

group. Can they share their secrets, too?

The Grand Genius – Summer of Henry Hoobler It struck Henry that perhaps he was waiting for the exact right moment to be

daring and brave. The exact right moment where he felt no worry at all, not one

tiny flicker. But what if that moment never came? Henry Hoobler is a reluctant

adventurer who is worried about his summer holiday camping at the beach: bugs,

spiders, snakes, stingers, blue-ringed octopi or sharks. Worst of all, his family and

when Henry meets Cassie, he discovers that courage is there to be found when

you have a friend who is straight-up and true.

Summer Reading Club Time!

Kids, get ready to join Parkes Shire Library Summer Reading

Club for a fun time - "Curious Creatures" will take over your

summer reading!

Summer Reading Club is for all young readers birth and up.

The theme this year is "Curious Creatures" to encourage eager

Trundle Junior Cricket On Saturday, the Trundle Juniors hosted the

REGISTER YOUR AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

Local business, community and sporting organisations are being urged to register their Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) machines through the St John Ambulance defibrillator register. The St John's defibrillator register is a national register to record the details and location of AEDs throughout Australia, making the life saving devices more accessible. Once your AED is registered with St John, the location of your defibrillator will be made available on the St John AED website and through the St John Resuscitate iPhone app. Parkes Shire Mayor and Lachlan Health Council member, Cr Ken Keith OAM said, "for every minute a person waits for defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 10 per cent." "The register aims to ensure anyone can easily locate and access AED machines throughout our community in order to minimise life threatening situations resulting from sudden cardiac arrest." Each year, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes approximately 30,000 Australians. Unfortunately, fewer than 5% survive, often because help cannot reach them in time. In 2017, Parkes Shire Council invested in five AEDs, which were installed at Council's Administrative Building, Works Depot, Library, and the new Water and Sewage Treatment Plants. Earlier this year, representatives from Parkes Railway Bowling Club, Peak Hill Golf Club, Parkes Rugby League Club, Parkes Cricket Association and Parkes Rugby Union Club all received a defibrillator and took part in the free training, as part of the NSW Office of Sport Local Sports Defibrillator Grant Program. To view AED locations, visit the St John Ambulance Australia website aed.stjohn.org.au/ or download the free St John Resuscitate iPhone app.
