Cement Swivel Debuts in Australia Tesco True Results Tesco’s Cement Swivel Customer Focus: An operator in Australia was cementing a 9-5/8” casing in 12-1/4” hole and took interest in Tesco Corporation’s integrated casing running/cementing solution. The operator wanted to improve its cementing process by eliminating non-productive time (NPT) while also increasing the integrity of the cement bond. The operator understood the benefits of rotating and reciprocating the casing while cementing, but could not perform such operation with a conventional cement head. The company approached Tesco for a collaborative solution utilizing Tesco’s cementing solution. True Result: Tesco recommended using the 5000 psi Cement Swivel in conjunction with the 500 ton Casing Drive System™ (CDS) to allow the operator to immediately transition from casing installation to cement operation without the added NPT of rigging-up the conventional cement head. The CDS was rigged up to a Tesco 250 EMI 400 top drive, allowing for fast rig-up through an integrated multi-product line solution. The cement swivel was installed directly above the CDS prior to rig up, providing an inlet for fluids through the side entry port of the swivel for cementing operations. This prevented the need for pumping cement slurry through the top drive and rigging up the cement contractors cement head. Also, by utilizing the CDS to run casing and the cement swivel for the cementation operation, the number of personnel required on the rig floor was reduced substantially, improving rig safety. The casing was successfully cemented in place while rotating at 20 rpm and reciprocating at 4 ft/min. Proven Performance: Utilizing Tesco’s 500 CDS with the 5000 psi cement swivel allowed for a smooth transition from casing running to the cementation operation. NPT experienced during previous conventional cementing operations was eliminated as a result. Rotating and reciprocating the casing while cementing aided in removing partially dehydrated gelled (PDG) drilling fluid from the annulus and placed cement around the pipe in eccentric part of annular area. The cement bound log quality increased by 50%, which is a direct indication of improved displacement efficiency. The customer was very satisfied with the result and Tesco’s service.
