PINELLAS PARK The Alzheimer’s Association-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter is encouraging families and caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia to prepare now for the up- coming hurricane season. The Alzheimer’s Association has unveiled their updated hurricane preparedness and information page on their website specifically to as- sist families and caregivers coping with ‘Alzheimer’s. “Floridians who remember the 2004 hurricane season know how a hurricane’s destructive force can leave people homeless, stranded in shelters or at home for days,” said Gloria Smith, President and CEO, Alzheimer’s Association, Florida Gulf Coast Chapter. For more information visit the Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter website at www.alz.org/FlGulfCoast/, click on link “Hurricane Preparedness and Information” link for “advance preparation,” supplies for your Emergency Kit, and what to do if a hurricane is coming your way. There are also links to updated evacuation information, shelters in- cluding special-need shelters and pet-friendly shelters, and to useful guides and storm updates. PINELLAS COUNTY — Nar- cotics detectives will hold "Opera- tion Medicine Cabinet" to highlight the problem of prescription drug abuse on Saturday at various loca- tions in Pinellas County. According to statistics, pre- scription drugs are the number one abused drug in the United States, now surpassing all other illicit drugs. Nine people die daily in the State of Florida due to prescription drug abuse. In Pinellas County, prescription drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death after automo- bile crashes. In order to address this issue, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is participating in a multi-county collaborative pharmaceutical take- back day aimed at reducing pre- scription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment. "Operation Medicine Cabinet" is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009. Pinellas County will have a total of four drop-off locations. Two will be located in the Sheriff's Of- fice jurisdiction and two in the St. Petersburg Police Department ju- risdiction. The operation will give resi- dents a chance to bring unused or expired prescription medications to various locations in their com- munity for safe disposal. "Operation Medicine Cabinet" is one way that the community can actively reduce prescription drug abuse by removing the source from their homes. "If we do not take active steps to remove the prescription drugs from the home, they will end up in the hands of the kids. Sixty-four percent of kids between the ages of 12 and 17 who use prescription drugs obtain them from the medi- cine cabinet at home," Lieutenant Robert Alfonso, of the Narcotics Unit, said. In addition, the program pro- vides a safe way of destroying the pharmaceuticals through incinera- tion. By burning the pharmaceuti- cals as opposed to flushing or send- ing the medication to the landfill, polluting the environment can be avoided. Percival, 39, is 0-1 this year with a team- high six saves and a 6.35 ERA over 14 ap- pearances. His 358 career saves rank eighth on the all-time list and fourth among active pitchers.
