  • Starting Line From the New (Again) Editor Lou Milinazzo I’ll be taking over the Drift from Bruce Allen. Bruce has done a great job with the newsletter. He actually recruited me to do this job my first time around. I am a long time COM member, (first event was back in 1988). I have previously served as Drift Editor and as a Director. As always, I would invite members to send in articles and photos that would be interesting to the club. Whether that be a technical article, past COM experience, or car guy/gal stuff in general, it makes for a better read. I really enjoyed the last few Drifts that included a lot of member input. COMSCC has an exciting event schedule this year, I look forward to seeing you at the track, Lou Milinazzo

From the Outgoing (Again) Editor Bruce Allen I have enjoyed the task of making the COMSCC Four Wheel Drift an indispensable part of your post-track life for the last year. Lou Milinazzo who, like me was once before an editor has expressed an urgent desire to become the new editor and the Board of directors has approved his appointment. My condolences to Lou, but he knows what he is getting into and the pay is great. Preparing the Drift requires a surprising amount of work although not as much as when we mailed print editions. Editing the photographs an creating a presentable Drift takes a lot of time. Drumming up content (photos and articles) can take a lot more time. I have been lucky this year to have a number of people send me photographs for the events I have not attended. Often it is up to the Drift editor to take the photos himself and this can be tough when instructing, driving, competing and repairing. I will be turning over my large supply of sledgehammers, brow beaters and ass kickers to Lou so he can effectively draw a continued supply of reports and wisdom from the Officers, Chiefs and other members of the club. So, Sayonara and good luck, Lou.

    Bruce (the Greased Shadow)

From the President John Spain I am really looking forward to our 2010 season. We have 8 events including two new tracks, a summer visit to Mont Tremblant, early autumn at The Glen and three weekends at NHMS including a 3 Day event on 4th of July Weekend. (Nice.) I hope that you are all as excited as I am! As I am sure many of you will agree, one of my favorite experiences behind the wheel is learning a new track and addressing all of the challenges that go along with it. This year We get to do it twice! 2009 was a building year for the club. The Board made some tough decisions regarding away events and the number of events held and focused on building a schedule that had a reasonable expectation of breaking even in a difficult economy. I am happy to say that this was not only a prudent choice it actually exceeded expectations. Your club is in good shape. Many thanks go to our Board of Directors and Chiefs for all of the hard work last year. Many new programs were added to bring in new members and a lot of extra work went into promoting our events to help them succeed. They did, and I believe that we actually attracted new members or "grabbed market share" in the process. It is now incumbent upon us to make our new members feel welcome and help them to discover what makes COM special . . . what makes COM THE place to host your track time: "It's all about the fast lap" . . . and good friends, great instructors (thanks to all of you!), thoughtful and valued classroom presentations (thanks Stephan!) and well run events (thanks to Mark Swinehart, Sam Webster, Will Martins, Paul Shearer, and allot of behind-the-scenes effort from the rest of the Board of Directors and many other volunteers.) We have a very special organization in the Com Sports Car Club and I am proud to be your president. Thanks for having me! All The Best, John

    From the Treasurer Fred Ferguson

Registration & Membership Site Updates A few enhancements to the site have been made that are worth noting.

    • Car & Driver Log Book – If you’re like me, you have a log or file of car maintenance, setup, and track events. My own racing log – a simple Excel sheet – was useful until I had several hundred entries and it was troublesome to maintain. Also, it was accessible only from my home PC.

The COM log book provides access your log from anywhere via the My Profile and My COM pages. Log entries can be downloaded to Excel, and entries can be linked to specific cars or specific track events. You may find it useful to have it accessible at the track via the web.

    • Member Directory – The Member Directory is accessible from the Members-Only page. The directory provides a roster of current club members. Note that anyone can be “unlisted” if they wish by simply updating their My Profile site settings.

    • Annual Election – The 2010 election of club officers and directors will be (and now has been) done via an online ballot.

    • Credit Cards – Starting in 2010, COM will accept Visa and MasterCard in addition to electronic checks. You may also submit payment via money order or personal check as before.

    • Checkout Page – The checkout page has been updated to support the new payment options. In addition, you can now update your profile and car information at checkout. Please note that your membership status will be verified at checkout, so if your membership needs to be renewed you will be prompted to do so when you register for your first track event.

A few more tweaks are in planning but please share your ideas and suggestions – racing against the clock is all about you but COMSCC is all about “us” and the club needs your support to run well. See you at the track! Fred Ferguson, Treasurer

From the Outgoing Treasurer Paul Shearer [I am reprinting Paul’s presentation given at the Banquet. Ed] I joined COM in 1995 and became Treasurer in 1996. I am retiring this year after 14 years as Treasurer. Unless there has been huge write-in effort, your treasurer next year will be Fred Ferguson. Fred and the board have a lot of new ideas and you will see a variety of programs rolled out to simplify registration and payment. Since I am retiring, I get to reminisce a bit. Fifteen years ago when I joined, Frank Perron was the club president. Frank served for a couple years and did a great job. He went away for a few years but has now come back to the club and is driving and instructing again. Welcome back, Frank. Over the years, I have worked with a number of presidents starting with Frank followed by Joe Traut Dean Clark Rob Goldfarb Herb Dasilva Alex Teng Will Martins and now John Spain I have also worked with a number of Registrars -- starting with Cathy Clark, Dean’ wife followed by Nicole Traut Fred Sanford Debbie Stohn and now Mark Swinehart I have to say that the real pleasure of the Treasurer position has been working with Mark Swinehart. He does a great job for the club and is a delight to work with. I will miss his humor. Moving on to the more conventional Treasurer presentation: I want to first look at our 10 year financial performance. 2009 was a very good year for us. We showed a net profit of $23,587 and are on our way to recovering from five very difficult years from 2004 -2008. To accomplish this, they board made some difficult choices to reduce our losses. Mosport and Calabogie are great tracks and much loved by the few people that attended those events, but in the entire time we went to those tracks, we never made money at any of those events. It was simply too far for most people to travel and we were unable to attract and meaningful number of local Canadians for these events. Last year, we lost modestly at WG and MT, broke even at NH1 and then made good profits at the rest of the NH events. WG loses mostly because the track fees are much higher than other tracks. The attendance and revenue is comparable to an NH event but the expenses are higher. With good gains at NH, we can easily tolerate modest losses at WG and MT.

  • The Four Wheel Drift

The 2010 schedule has been developed by John Spain who has worked with the tracks to negotiate rates and dates, and has given us a schedule that limits our downside financial risk and gives us good opportunities for profits. John has added two new tracks for COM, Monticello in New York and New Jersey Motorsports Park. Monticello will be on the full over 4 mile course and NJ will be the 2.25 mile Thunderbolt track. John has negotiated reduced rates for these events that will allow us to break even at a fairly low level of attendance limiting our financial risk. However, we would expect that many people will want to try these interesting new tracks and the events will be very successful. Beyond the two new tracks we will have four events at NH with three weekends including one three day long weekend. MT and WG fill out the calendar with their usual events. Lastly, I wanted to look at membership trends. Membership seems to have stabilized after years of gradual decline. There are a number of programs in effect to increase membership, including hot lap ridealongs and promotions at motor events. Membership should begin to trend upward again. I have enjoyed my time as Treasurer. The club is in good financial shape now but will still need another year or two of strong profits to rebuild its cash reserves. I believe that I am leaving you in good hands with Fred.

AUGUSTA MAINE MOTORSPORTS EXPO Craig Herrick The Augusta Civic Center in Maine was the scene of the annual Northeast Motorsports Expo. from January 8 thru January 10th. Featuring a wide variety of racing vehicles, the show was a great venue for our club. Many cars were for circle tracks but also there were snowmobiles, tractors, trucks, midget racers, and classic cars. This show was definitely bigger than the Portland Expo last year with a larger crowed attending all 3 days. Many of the visitors to our booth were surprised and very pleased to learn that there is an actual road course racing club so close by. After asking all the usual questions they eagerly took what info. we had available. We ran out of fliers. We did have a few business cards and we made more copies of the 2010 schedule I had printed off from the club site, to pass out. We had 3 drawings for a RIDE-ALONG and one drawing for a free TRACK DAY. THE WINNERS ARE: RIDE-A-LONGS: Jim Leavitt, North Yarmouth, Me. David DuPont, Chelsea, Me. John D. Randall Jr. North Berwick, Me. TRACK DAY WINNER: Lewis Anderson, Hollis Me. I typed up an award for each and sent it to them by mail, offering Craig & I as mentors. I want to thank Kurt Hissong (Congratulations on the award for your car, it really looks awesome!!) for all the help and support he gave. Setting up, manning the table, and taking back down. It takes a lot of time, and driving back and forth, but it allowed for Craig and I to attend the club banquet Saturday night with Barry and Darlene Gammon. Barry was a big help in getting the club into the show. Also our daughter Karen & friend Kim manned the table with Kurt Saturday night and by themselves Sunday morning till we returned from Nashua. It was a busy weekend but we believe the club will benefit from it by the response we got. Craig was able to get pictures from the catwalk above the show. If you would like to see more pictures, go to www.mainelymotorsportstv.com . If you would like a CD of the show you can order one from that site for $20.00.
