To the Menlo-Atherton Community

It’s always hard to say goodbye to summer, but all of us are excited to begin a new school year and to welcome a new group of M-A Bears. An important date to remem-ber is Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 4 begining at 6:15 p.m. For New Parents and Students

While your child’s guidance counselors (information on whom can be found at http://www.sequoiadistrict.org/page/658) and teachers are typically the best resources to consult if your child is struggling, Menlo-Atherton also provides on-site mental health services and a full-time student support coordinator (Miki Cristerna). In late fall, we will break ground on a five-classroom addition to an exist-ing classroom building for occupancy in August of 2015. Much of this coming year will focus on long-term planning to grow the campus and de-termine all of our building and facility needs. School Loop: New Information System and Gradebook

The Sequoia District has adopted School Loop, a communication and con-tent management system that houses teacher gradebooks, courses (les-sons), attendance, electronic files, and curriculum materials. Google Apps for Educators has also been adopted. Infinite Campus will no longer sup-port a gradebook. All teachers will be required to use and post in the gradebook by January. New and Noteworthy

• Talbott Paulsen (incoming senior) was selected in June as a High School All-American in diving by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (to see the 2014 All America Diving lists, visit http://www.niscaonline.org/AwardPrograms/AADiving.aspx).

A Huge Shout-Out to Admin Support Volunteers

For two days in mid-August, Admin Support volunteers signed up to put a friendly face to M-A by greeting fel-low families to Arena Check-In, giving out IDs to students, assigning lockers, and doing the myriad tasks we ask of our Admin Support volunteers. What's more, 17 of you signed up to help the library staff with checking out textbooks, even before we ever issued the call. Right after Arena Check-In, 34 M-A parents showed up in the New Gym shortly after dawn to hand out schedules. Mary and I love this Committee because our volunteers, YOU, always respond to the call. Thank you is too small a word for the likes of you – but you know what we mean! Catherine McMillan and Mary Zarucchi

Welcome, new and returning M-A students, fami-lies, and staff members to the 2014-15 school year. The year is off to a smooth start with Arena Check-In, schedule distribution, and the first days of school behind us. Many thanks to Catherine McMillan and Mary Zarucchi and to the hundred-plus parent volunteers who helped make the first events of the year a success! The M-A PTA supports students and staff by providing volunteers and/or funding for projects, equipment, and supplies. Funding comes from membership dues and donations, and the annual Senior Fashion Show, scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2015. Please consider joining the PTA during our membership drive through the end of September. Your membership not only provides needed funding, but also allows you to vote on how the money is allocated. Freshman Challenge Day October 27, 28 and 29, 2014

Adult Volunteers Needed This Fall at M-A

Challenge Day is coming to M-A for the eleventh year, and we need your help! This freshman event, which kicks off our year-long “Be the Change” program, is sponsored by the M-A PTA with support from the princi-pal, teachers, and administrative staff. The incoming freshman class will participate in this lifetime experience. Our goal is that at the end of the day, students will not only have bonded as a class, but also will have torn down old stereotypes and become inspired to live, study, and work in an environment of compassion, ac-ceptance, and respect. Since 1987, the Challenge Day programs have touched the lives of over half a million teens nationwide. In fact, Challenge Day is the subject of the popular TV series, If You Really Knew Me, and was featured on the Oprah show, in the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, and in the Emmy Award-winning documentary Teen Files: Sur-viving High School.

Challenge Day is a powerful, high-energy program in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning activities. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem; to shift negative peer pressure to positive peer support; and to eliminate the acceptability of teas-ing, violence, and all forms of oppression. The Chal-lenge Day programs are designed to unite the members of the school and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population. And it works! In the poignant words of a past parent volunteer and small group facilitator, “I do believe that each time they see each other, it will remind them that they are not alone in their difficulties. I saw repeatedly throughout the day students realizing they are not the only one with various struggles. Then I saw their peers reaching out to assist.”

Adult participation is crucial to the success of these three days! The freshman class will be divided so that one-third attends each day, and we are looking for over 225 adult volunteers to help with this event. You can volun-teer either Monday, October 27, Tuesday, October 28 or Wednesday, October 29. Volunteer positions include small group facilitators for 4-5 students (8:15 am-3:30 pm), registration (8:00-9:15 am), or lunch servers (11:00 am-1:00 pm). Everyone is welcome, whether you are a parent of a freshman or upper-classman. As you are making your volunteer plans for the school year, please take the time to consider making a real dif-ference in the lives of our M-A teens in this awesome way. As previous participants, we can promise you that you, too, will walk away a changed individual. To volunteer for any of these positions, please send an email to chal l [email protected] and specify the position and time for which you wish to volun-teer. Lauren Calhoon and Rachel Lokey, PTA Co-Chairs of Challenge Day 2014

Career Center Welcome to another school year, a landmark one for me. This year marks my 20th as M-A’s College Advisor—and I still look forward to coming to work every day. It is an honor to collaborate with the stu-dents on their plans for the future. Over the summer, I met with almost 100 incoming seniors so we could get a jump start on the year. I also enjoyed six days in San Diego, not vacationing (never even saw the beach), but teaching (for the 14th time) at the College Board Summer Admission Institute (SAI). The students at SAI are 65 just-hired college admission counselors from colleges all over the US; the faculty consists of deans and directors of admission from a variety of colleges (USC, Washington State, Colorado State, Lewis & Clark, UC Irvine, and others) plus me (representing the high school side). SAI is intense and worthwhile, with a healthy sprinkling of fun. Many SAI students will end up visiting M-A representing their colleges, plus it’s fun for me to work with deans and directors on such a worthy introduction for the participants to the field of col-lege admission. Speaking of college visits, by December, at least 130 colleges will have sent representatives to speak to M-A jun-iors and seniors. So far, we plan to host Brown, Cal Baptist, Carnegie Mellon, Chapman, Colgate, Denison, Dominican, Goucher, High Point, Miami U. of Ohio, NYU, Northeastern, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Seattle U., St. Lawrence U., Suffolk, Swarthmore, Tulane, U. of British Columbia, U. Mass. Amherst, U. of New Mexico, U. of Oregon, U. of Washington, Vanderbilt, Washington U. in St. Louis, Wellesley, Whitman, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Students must follow a specific process if they wish to attend these visits; I’ll explain it to them in their bulletins and in class. When students return to M-A, every junior and senior will receive a paper bulletin from me with everything they need to know early in the year. I will visit senior English classes within the first two weeks of school, and junior English classes before Thanksgiving. I will continue to meet with seniors throughout the fall, plus I will answer their questions during lunch periods and office hours; through Naviance and on Facebook; by email, text, and phone; and in any other way they choose to communicate. I’ll begin to get to know the juniors more individual-ly second semester, and ALL students are welcome in the Career Center at any time. Seniors will receive an email from me every Sunday of the school year through Naviance, so I hope their email addresses in Naviance are correct, and I hope they know that senior year is not a good time to ignore email, since colleges communicate this way as well. I’m also looking forward to another year of College Club, our monthly gathering of first-generation-to-college 9th and 10th graders. I have some great speakers and activities lined up for them. And parents of SENIORS only: please plan to attend Senior Parent College Information Night on September 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the PAC Cafeteria. This event is not for students, nor for parents of students at other grade levels. I will hold Sophomore Parent Night and Junior Parent Night in winter. Spanish translation will be pro-vided at all events. I could go on … but I’ll spare you for now and will continue to communicate as the year goes on. Alice Kleeman

Hasta ahora, tenemos planes para recibir a Brown, Cal Bap-tist, Carnegie Mellon, Chapman, Colgate, Denison, Dominican, Goucher, High Point, Miami U. of Ohio, NYU, Northeastern, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Seattle U., St. Lawrence U., Suffolk, Swarthmore, Tulane, U. of British Columbia, U. Mass. Amherst, U. of New Mexico, U. of Oregon, U. of Washington, Vanderbilt, Wa-shington U. in St. Louis, Wellesley, Whitman, y Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Alice Kleeman

From Our Co-Presidents: It’s a Great Day at M-A . . . Let’s Keep It That Way! Welcome to our Foundation Family! We are ex-cited to lead M-A’s Foundation for the Future into an exciting new chapter. Over the years do-nor dollars have transformed our school, and this year we are gearing up to partner with our talent-

ed principal to expand offerings for a new generation of students. State funding is never sufficient to meet the challenges and uphold our community standards of excellence, so the Foundation steps in to fully support M-A’s exceptional teaching and curriculum. For 2014-2015, the Foundation’s 22nd school year, we have committed to raise an inspiring $2.2 million. Our aspirations are lofty, but our plan is clear. To support all of our students, we need more funds than ever before and we cannot achieve this goal without your help. The math looks like this:

We will launch our official fundraising campaign in early October. Watch for information about how you can contribute in TriVocis, BearNotes, periodic emails and at our informational events. Join us in championing excel-lent public education at Menlo-Atherton High School. It’s a Great Day at M-A. Let’s all work together to keep it that way!

Steve Fioretti and Keri Tully 2014-15 Foundation Co-Presidents

M-A Math Contests

The math department is quite proud of our student's contest accomplishments, and we are looking forward to another great year. Top competition performers who are returning this year include Jacob Feiler, Thatcher Freeman, Andrew Yates, Daniel LaPorte and Katrina Wijaya. School-wide math contests are held during lunch on seven different Tuesdays throughout the year. These contests are part of a state contest called the Cali-fornia Math League. Hundreds of high schools throughout the state partici-

pate, at both a state and county level. Participating students receive many benefits. They receive extra credit in their respective math classes. They also enjoy the challenge of competition and the chance to compete with their peers. And each year approxi-mately twenty winners receive trophies and can add the award to their college applications. Beyond the extra credit, the spirit of competition, and the awards, there is a very practical benefit in that the students engage in independent thinking that cuts across the math curriculum. We believe that students who participate in many math contests during high school become more skilled at taking standardized tests, in particular the SATs, the math subject tests and AP math exams.

This year's contests will occur on September 23, October 21, November 18, December 9, January 13, February 10 and March 17. Please encourage your son or daughter to participate! Approximately five hundred students do so each year. Each thirty-minute contest requires a student to solve six challenging math problems by apply-ing high school-level concepts from math subject areas ranging from geometry through pre-calculus. A student can score from 0 to 6 on each contest. Most participants are in Geometry 9, AS Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics, although certainly Algebra students are welcome. The typical score on a contest can be a 1 or 2, and students often score 0 because of the difficulty of the questions. Some good math students do not perform well in these competitions, in which case we understand that they may decide not to continue par-ticipating. An additional international math contest, the American Math Contest, will be held on February 3, 2015 during fifth and sixth periods. This contest is by invitation only, with participants being chosen based on their Califor-nia Math League performance and math abilities shown in class. Top performers—typically five to ten students from M-A—go on to the three-hour American Invitation Math Exam. Jen Payne, Math Department Chair Gregg Whitnah, Co-Math Department Chair

In addition to service learning, students will be immersed in the culture of Central America while staying with host families and receiving one-on-one Spanish lessons that can earn them five units of elective credit and a jumpstart to language acquisition. To learn more about the program, or to begin the application process, visit www.gvcoca.org and plan to attend our first student fair and parent orientation meeting on October 2. Students and parents who attend this meeting will be the first to be considered for this year’s program. Students must attend the commitment meeting on October 9 to be accepted into the program. PSAT Prep Course

Before you know it, incoming juniors will be facing the first hurdle of the year, the PSAT. Have you made your family plans about how best to prepare your child? Since 1980, we have been offering a high quality five-week course of instruction. Our course meets on campus from 3:30-5:00 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. (If a fall sport will interfere with this schedule, we can discuss the issue.) The projected start date is mid-September and we will end the week the PSAT is given. We teach techniques that will get your child through the logic and reasoning needed for the exam. We do not review material learned in previous English and math classes, except as necessary for demonstration purposes, as the exam is not to show what you know but what you can do with what you know. A student who truly wants to succeed is all we need, and that student will go to the test primed and ready. Good attendance is very important. Our fee ranges from $100 to $225 depending on the number of students enrolled. Once a student is seated in the class, the parent is responsible for the full fee. In the fall, the basic $100 is the usual cost, but no promises can be made as we cannot yet determine how many students will be seated. The fee covers all necessary materi-als for the course. Please note that the newly announced exam format has not yet been launched; the old for-mat will be used. Sophomores have no real need to take the PSAT, but we do have a waiting list for them if they do feel they need to take the exam this year. The test in the sophomore year does not count, so if your student has the abil-ity to earn a Letter of Recommendation or National Merit Semifinalist standing, it must be in the junior year. We do admit those few seniors who have lately decided to take the test. For questions and/or to enroll your student, please contact Jane King by email at [email protected]. Jane King, Director, M-A's Own PSAT/SAT Prep

M-A Parent Education Series: Fall Semester Sneak Peek! We hope you’ve had a great summer! The M-A Parent Education Series has an exciting and information-packed schedule planned for fall semester. On September 17, the M-A Parent Education Series welcomes Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute, to discuss Search’s latest research-to-practice initiative, “The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence.” Recent and emerging research suggests that persistence or “perseverance” can improve students’ academic mo-tivation and increase performance. Many young people lack the motivation and capacity to complete challeng-ing tasks and achieve goals both inside and outside of school. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and per-sistence, it is possible to increase both significantly. Search has created a new resource called “the Perseverance Process” to turn the research on motivation and persistence into a set of explicit and actionable strategies. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. In November, the M-A Parent Ed Series hosts a special event with Alice Kleeman, M-A College Advisor, and Kirk Brennan, Director of Admission at USC, for “A Conversation About College Admission.” Don’t miss this opportunity to share an open discussion about the college admissions with two highly-regarded college experts. This event – open to parents and students – will be a great opportunity for juniors and seniors to learn about the college admission process. 2014-15 Program Offerings: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 “The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence,” with Dr. Kent Pekel of Search Institute; 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., M-A PAC Wednesday, November 12, 2014 “A Conversation About College Admission,” with Alice Kleeman, M-A College Advisor, and Kirk Brennan, Director of Admission, University of Southern California (USC); 7:00 – 8:30 pm, M-A PAC Tuesday, February 3, 2015 “The Well-Balanced Student” with Dr. Denise Pope, Challenge Success, Stanford University; 7:00 – 8:30 pm, M-A PAC Thursday, April 2, 2015 To be confirmed; 7:00 – 8:30 pm, M-A PAC M-A Parent Education Series events are free and sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. FACT: Menlo-Atherton Boosters is supporting the plan to bring Boys Volleyball to M-A in the Spring 2015! FACT: In 2013-2014, 12 Menlo-Atherton athletic teams won league (Peninsula Athletic League) titles, with Boys Varsity Water Polo and Boys Varsity Basketball reaching CCS Division 1 finals!! FACT: Less than ½ of the coaches for M-A’s sports teams are funded by the school district. With your sup-port, the Boosters can continue to provide coaching stipends for more than 40 boys and girls teams. FACT: Uniforms can cost well over $5,000 per team. The Boosters makes it a priority to outfit the teams with uniforms appropriate for athletic performance and school pride. FACT: The school’s ability to fund all the equipment needed for the more than 54 sports team falls well short of the need. The Boosters uses your money to be sure our coaches have safe and up-to-date equipment for their teams. FACT: The efforts of the coaches, athletes and boosters continue to pay off. In 2013-2014, M-A won its 7th PAL Commissioner’s Cup in eight years! (The Commissioner's Cup is presented to the school that “best exem-plifies the league's commitment to sportsmanship and excellence in athletics.”) Please help support all our athletes by donating to the Boosters today.
