Explaining Bleeding, Bugs and

Bad Breath to Patients

OBJECTIVES

1. Understand the impact of effective science based sound bites 2. Explain in sound bites cell level changes associated with bleeding 3. Connect changes in the mouth with changes in the body 4. Present information that prompts questions from patients 5. Use science to comfortably discuss uncomfortable topics

According to the research, bleeding is a sign of gingivitis and also periodontitis. With bleeding, bacterial pathogens enter the blood stream, alter blood vessels and carry toxins to other parts of the body. Learn the connection between bad breath and periodontal disease that will prompt patients to seek treatment. Sound bites are used successfully in advertising and they can also be used to share scientific research findings with patients. Giving the right information will trigger questions from patients that lead to treatment acceptance. Teaching patients to do daily self-examination improves compliance and optimizes oral health. When individuals take control of their oral health they prevent both caries and periodontal disease.

Polish First: The Secret to

Hygiene Department Success

OBJECTIVES 1. Understand the various definitions for “cleaning” 2. Avoid doing undercover perio treatment 3. Describe strategies to stay on schedule 4. Present information so patients ask for treatment 5. Use sound bites based on research

You have the skills and knowledge and experience to educate, motivate and conservatively treat periodontal disease. For most of the people you treat, your work and your words achieve ongoing oral health and sincere appreciation. However, your schedule may still contain a few “bloody prophies.” By polishing first, the “cleaning” is complete in the patient’s mind and the periodontal examination can begin. We will explore strategies to avoid doing undercover periodontal treatment, create case presentations and develop sound bites based on research. Learn, laugh and take home ideas to make your dental hygiene department even more successful than it already is.

Achieve Health in 5mm Bleeding Pockets with Scoops Not Scalers

OBJECTIVES 1. Discuss the research rationale for periodontal instrumentation 2. Observe a radical change in instrument design 3. Set goals for improvement in instrumentation outcomes 4. Develop a strategy for treating non-responding areas 5. Understand the potential for integrating new technology

Advanced instrumentation is more than getting into furcations and to the base of 10mm pockets. Dealing with localized 5mm pockets that don’t heal after SRP pose one of the greatest instrumentation challenges hygienists face today. Learn how to read the tissues, analyze the anatomy and determine the best treatment approach to achieve success in these problem areas. Periodontal instrumentation for the new millennium will give you a different approach using totally new instrument designs. Achieve greater periodontal health for your patients with instruments that make it easier than ever before.
