Adding 3 addendsPrimary MathCCS: 1.OA.2 Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Numbers can be grouped in different ways to solve problems with three addends. Remind the students how to group to 10 when adding numbers. 1. Work with a partner. 2. You will need a set of activity cards and some connecting

cubes. 3. Put the cards in a pile face down. 4. Shortest student goes first. 5. Pick the top card. 6. Read it aloud and answer the question. Use counting cubes

to help. 7. Partner checks the answer sheet. If correct keep the card, if

not correct put the card back In the pile. 8. Take turns until all the cards are gone. 9. Student with the most cards wins. 10. Record how many cards you have on the Challenge

Question Answer Sheet.
