Triple-E

A description model for how individuals and organizations change over time.

The three core elements of an individual or organization.

How things actually get done – or don’t.The foundation for Corporate Citizen is a description model for personal and organizational development with the working name Triple-E. It’s based on three pillars; Essence, Execution, and Evolution.

Essence is about the three core elements we consist of. Survival strategy, Higher Purpose, and Legacy.

Evolution is about the three elements of change. Continuous Incremental Improvement, Error Correction, and Survival of the Fittest.

Execution is about the three underlying drivers that invoke action. Want to, Have to, Need to.

Execution model

The Execution model is based on the premise that any action istriggered because someone wants to do something, needs to dosomething, or have to do something. These are not mutuallyexclusive triggers, but any action will have one dominantcomponent. Interestingly, the model applies equally well toindividuals and organizations. Attached to each component is itsprimary source of energy – the main driving force that compelsus to act.

Think about it. All of the things you’ve done today, this week, oreven this year – can easily be mapped to one of the threecomponents. Every action we perform is started by one or moretriggers, and in the purest and simplest model, these threecomponents cover the whole spectrum.

Why do we need a description model to explain how things get done (or not, as is often the case)?1. Analyzing our action patterns improves understanding and helps introspection. 2. Applying an instrument for change is required to deliberately accelerate Evolution.

Triggers

Attached to each component is its primary source of energy – the main driving force that compels us to act, serving as a trigger.

• I have to run, or the bear will eat me. We have to become profitable, or we’ll go out of business. (Fear)

• I want to marry you and live happily ever after. We want to change the world with our great ideas. (Passion)

• I need to fix the roof before it starts leaking. We need to implement a structured process for sales. I need to lose some weight. We need to consolidate our product portfolio. (Concern)

The two most powerful sources in the model are Passion and Fear, and because of their strength they are most successful at invoking action

Fear

While Fear is the greatest trigger of immediate action, it is also the one that produces the highest amount of stress. You don’t want to spend too much time controlled by this very direct trigger.

• I have to run, or the bear will eat me. • We have to become profitable, or we’ll go out of business.

You will find that many people and organizations are triggered way too much by Fear. The typical root cause is that they’ve reached a point where many things they Need to but don’t have time for are falling apart, thereby ending up in Have to. It can lead to negative stress and suboptimal actions just to “fix things”. Use it cautiously for great surges of energy, and balance it wisely with Want to in order to stay positive.

Passion

Want to is the ultimate trigger for positive action. It makes people go that extra mile and automatically be fuelled with even more energy. It makes organizations go out and change the world.

You will find that most successful start-ups execute mostly on Want to and Have to, which helps them move extremely fast and come up with creative solutions, but sometimes at the expense of global efficiency and with poor planning. Successful people know how to tap into the endless source of passion.

Concern

The two most powerful sources in the model are Passion and Fear, and because of its relative weakness Concern is at risk of becoming starved from action by the stronger triggers.

• I need to fix the roof before it starts leaking. • We need to implement a structured process for sales. • I need to lose some weight. • We need to consolidate our product portfolio.

You will find that so-called “list people” (who wants to get things on paper and properly ordered) really enjoy this trigger. But beware! There’s a risk that you won’t actually execute the things you Need todo, and then they’ll likely end up in Have to. Balance is critical here, because the greatest thing about Need to is that it can help you get more time for Want to.

Powerful Attributes

Each component and trigger has positive associated properties that are extremely valuable to individuals and organizations.

• Connected to Passion you will find Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Creativity.

• Connected to Fear you will find Urgency, Speed, and Survival.

• Connected to Concern you will find Control, Structure, and Efficiency.

With perfect balance, we can become formidable in executing the right action. In general, most people and companies spend too much time on Have to, which is very reactive and often stressful. Most also spend way too much time on Need to, which is proactive but in the absence of good balance tends to create endless lists of things to do, and endless meetings to discuss priorities – instead of actually executing.
