Residents from a Melton Mowbray care home donated a beautifully decorated Christmas tree to the annual St Mary's Church's Christmas Tree Festival last weekend.Staff from The Amwell, a residential, nursing, dementia and respite care home in Asfordby Road, took residents to the event to enjoy the spectacle and to see their own tree in all its glory.

The magnificent tree from The Amwell, adorned with decorations made by their residents, joined over 1,340 stunning decorated trees donated by over 220 organisations and was a sight to behold.

In its 16th year, the Christmas Tree Festival is the largest in the country hosted by St Mary’s Church who share a special relationship with care home as the reverend delivers a service at the care home each month.

The Amwell activities co-ordinator Vicki Hurrell said: “Residents were really looking forward to attending

the Christmas Tree Festival as locally it’s a massive event.

“Having made the decorations themselves, they were excited to see their tree in position. When we visited, our residents really enjoyed seeing all the spectacular Christmas trees together, and getting into the festive spirit.

“We find our residents benefit enormously from a wide-ranging programme of meaningful activities. Annual events like this, specifically allow everyone to get out and about, socialise and get involved with the local community which positively impacts their happiness and wellbeing.”

More and more customers are discovering the wealth of sensational style they can add to their homes when they shop at Paul Edwards Interiors. Coventry. People are saying that’s exactly what it needed! Our vintage leather and Harris Tweed gallery has gone down particularly well.

Nature and history constantly inspire the creative process of Hannah Silversmith, an artisan business dedicated to handcrafting exquisite pieces of one-off, bespoke or limited edition jewellery quite different to what anyone else is making.

Hannah Silversmith is the trading name of jewellery & silversmithing graduate Hannah Smith, who researches themes as varied as Saxon hordes, antique clocks, geodes, insects and robots as a basis for jewellery ranges.

She likes to create items that have a narrative story behind them. Often these are nature inspired, such as her insect collection featuring ants, woodlice, dragonflies and ‘werewigs’, with their beautiful shapes hand cut into silver and incorporating fantastical stories from her imagination.

“Although I make a range of jewellery, I make each piece one at a time, so each one is different,” she says.

Her other great love is to take commissions from people and create their vision in silver, gold, gemstones and skilful craftsmanship, utilising

information about the person or occasion that causes it to be made.

Hannah’s pieces are all hallmarked in line with the regulations of the Assay Office so customers can always be certain of the authenticity of the materials. They are on sale through her online shop at www.hannahsilversmith.co.uk, where people can also find details of evening classes which she teaches in Loughborough.

Eventfully Yours Our Recommended Wedding Planners 2019

UK couples now spend an eye-watering average of £32,273 on their weddings, according to a 2018 survey of 3,300 couples by www.hitched.co.uk. The total is up more than £5,000 on a similar survey in 2017 and the biggest expenditures, in order of damage to the bank account, are the venues, the honeymoons and the food. Evidently there’s real passion for making sweet memories to generate celebratory perfection anchored to the joy of getting hitched and there’s definitely no shortage of ways to do that.

The planning is all part of the fun for the soon-to-be-wed of the modern era, especially as there is now such an abundant choice of venues for the wedding ceremony itself and for the places able to cater for the reception, wedding breakfast, party and entertainment. People can book anywhere from a beach to a castle to have their life-linking bash. Many people dream of exotic venues in the sun. If you’re one of them, check out

our specialist provider of yachts as dream wedding venues at www.exclusiveyachtweddings.com.

Almost every venue for hire would love a big share of the valuable weddings market, so many offer attractive packages including the services of a wedding planner. If they don’t it’s well worth hiring an independent organiser for your wedding arrangements in general and the big day in particular. Eventfully Yours is the failsafe option for

smooth running services with all the boxes confidently ticked. This allows the stars of the show to relax and enjoy their day to the full without getting stressed about whether the catering is booked or the cars will arrive on time.

Buying wedding outfits is some of the best fun you can have in preparing for a wedding and some bridalwear specialists make quite a part of the choosing and fitting of what, on average, costs £1,321 for the bride’s outfit and £360 for the ‘groom’s. Of course, it’s not only the wedding couple who can enjoy this experience. The mums and bridesmaids also have a great time glamming up for the big day, perhaps at a super boutique like Renaissance in Coalville. Guests may find the perfect outfit for their part in the special day at The Little Black Dress Shop, Atherstone.

No wedding is complete without beautiful rings. The highly creative and experienced

Hannah Silversmith undertakes commissions for unique and exquisite pieces of hallmarked jewellery, individually made to suit clients’ own ideas.

When all these memories are being made they need to be captured so they can be shared, pored over, reflected upon, framed and perhaps passed down to family. There’s nobody better equipped to undertake that task than photographer Bill Haddon, an immensely experienced wedding photography specialist who excels in capturing the unique mood of each individual occasion.

A honeymoon is now a major part of the wedding expenditure, coming in at an average of £3,630 on the Hitched evidence. Asia is most popular but 22% of couples now save this for later and first splash out £911 on a relatively modest ‘minimoon’.

Health & Wellbeing

Give the gifts of beauty and relaxation this Christmas by choosing from the magical selection of natural crystals, fossils, aromatherapy oils and spiritual gifts to be found in Kelly’s Crystal Shop, Atherstone.

Owner Kelly Staten has amassed a beguiling array of natural gemstones in colours from deep violet of amethyst to the subtle pink of rose quartz, each as individual as a human fingerprint and holding its own unique power and charm. Alongside these are sold stones which have been carved, polished and maybe shaped into wands, dowsing points or crystal balls in different varieties of quartz and other minerals. Jewellery bought here is, of course, very special.

It’s not hard to tap into energies beyond our normal wavelength when handling these beautiful pieces, nor to imagine links to our ancestors when handling fossils of ancient animals.

Alongside all these things, Kelly’s Crystal Shop offers a wide range of fragrances to use around the home, whether in oil, candle or incense form, together with Tarot packs and books drawing upon arcane wisdom with a message for today. Vitamin and food supplements are available, as are highly reputable legal CBD products from the hemp flower.

Kelly herself has worked with crystals for the greater part of her own life and, with a natural affinity for people, loves ‘prescribing’ just the right ones for her individual customers and their particular desires.

People have been losing weight with the Cambridge Weight Plan for around 35 years so we thought we’d see if it would work for one of our staff. Guess what? It did! After only two weeks she’d lost an amazing 1½ stones and said she never felt hungry at all.The diet has recently been rebranded as ‘The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan’ but still has the same key ingredients as before. Each client has their own motivational weight loss consultant and each has their own personalised weight loss plan featuring Cambridge nutritional formula food products.

Our sales assistant Alice decided to give it a try and was assigned to consultant Eileen Larder. Here’s what she had to say about her experience two weeks into the programme.

“Eileen is brilliant! She’s local and she’s been really supportive. I’ve tried many different diets and the Cambridge one is

the nicest and best I’ve come across. It’s really easy to stick to, not as restrictive as other diets. I’ve tried the Cambridge shakes, soups, bars, porridge and smoothies. They also do complete meals but I make my own.

“I’ve eaten two products a day and they’re really filling. On Eileen’s advice I basically cut the carbs and she created a shopping list which was mainly chicken, turkey, fish and vegetables. Each week she comes to weigh and measure me and she is very encouraging. She sends text messages every day to keep me on track.

“I’ve upped my water intake to 2½ litres a day. I don’t know if that is because of that or the vitamins packed into those Cambridge foods but my skin has never looked so good! It’s absolutely clear and fantastic! My energy levels have increased massively, I’m sleeping better and I’ve lost all that weight!”

Winter Escapes

& Unique Retreats

Nothing adds cheer to a winter’s day like going out to eat with good friends. Tastes, budgets and circumstances may vary enormously but it’s one of the timeless pleasures of existence to ‘break bread’ together, sharing food, drink and convivial conversation. Many people see the same people regularly and sometimes even go to the same venues every time, knowing the offerings are tried, tested and reliably to be enjoyed. This way, however, they miss out on great potential for enjoying the new, the different and perhaps the delightfully surprising.

In our magazine’s circulation area of Leicestershire and Warwickshire we enjoy a quite amazing array of good places to eat out, but on the border of these two great counties The Royal Redgate stands out a range of good reasons.

• It’s right in the centre of England and so is a great place to meet up when people are travelling from different directions to be together.

• It’s got bags of room and plenty of snug corners so people can feel comfortable whether they are in a party or a pair.

• There’s a warm, welcoming ambience and

• The food and drinks are outstanding! The food is freshly home cooked with locally sourced ingredients and the beverages include one-off cocktails, quality ales and freshly ground coffees.

The Royal Redgate is serving a special Christmas menu from now until December 24 featuring both the traditional seasonal favourites of turkey, trimmings and Christmas pud but also a range of festive alternatives.

As 2018 draws to a close there’s just time for a rejuvenating Christmas get-away and Brook Meadow is just the place. This idyllic holiday site has three chic, centrally heated lakeside lodges and well serviced camping & caravanning pitches which offer

Lakeside Lodges • Safari - themed Glamping • Camping

Treasure Hunt Camping Parties • Fishing • Wedding Hire

Family-run Brook Meadow is a 400 acre working farm where guests can relax among woodland, pasture and a large fishing lake which is a magnet for wildlife. Situated in Sibbertoft, near Market Harborough, the accommodation has earned this magazine’s Award of Excellence as our Retreat of the Year 2019. It has also been shortlisted for the Visit England Go Leicestershire regional finals for most enjoyable stay, self catering.

Christmas guests will find a festive hamper waiting, while local towns and villages have many charming seasonal events on their calendars. Welford Christmas Tree Farm even has some of Santa’s reindeer staying until December 17.

Available for stays of three nights or more, the boutique lodges overlook the lake and are impeccably furnished and equipped, combining comfort, cosiness and an unbeatable sense of freedom.

Contemporary good taste is evident in every corner, from the nature-themed décor to the glowing fires. Each lodge sleeps four people in a king and twin bedroom. Two also have a double sofa bed. All have a spacious bathroom, a kitchen with fridge, microwave and oven, living area with TV, DAB radio, Wi-fi and veranda with outdoor seating.

Lake views may well include owls, bats, kingfishers, the resident swans and some enormous carp, tench and

perch. The site is environmentally friendly and constantly evolves to foster wildlife conservation.

The campsite has modern toilets, showers, laundry facilities and firepits. Many pitches have electric hook-ups.

Children love playing in the pirate-

themed play area and collecting eggs from the roaming hens. Brook Meadow was founded by Jasper and Mary Hart and is run by their daughter, Claire, an architect and interior designer who masterminded the lodge interiors from botanical wallpapers to the bird in flight-like light fittings.

“I believe being next to water has a great impact on health and wellbeing, strengthening the connection to the natural world and one another,” says Claire. “The interiors of our lakeside retreats bring the outside in through design, with botanical references wherever you look, to enhance the very real benefits of holidaying next to water.”

Brook Meadow, Welford Road, Sibbertoft, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 9UJ; tel 01858 880886, email [email protected] www.brookmeadow.co.uk

I was definitely in the mood for rest and relaxation when I went to stay at the beautiful Brook Meadow holiday site near Market Harborough, but I couldn’t have dreamed just how perfect it would turn out. My tiresome tasks and ‘to do’ lists vanished like ripples as I luxuriated on the veranda of a cosy lakeside lodge surrounded by nothing but water, birdsong and unspoiled countryside.

Sited near the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire border, the site has three such lodges, plus camping, glamping and caravanning. At its heart is a five acre fishing lake which started to work its relaxing magic the instant I arrived, it was so soothing, restful and regenerative.

Now I’m delighted to award this haven of tranquillity our magazine’s

Award of Excellence as our 2019 Retreat of the Year. It’s worthy not only because of the wonderful setting but also because of the lodges themselves and the designer delights within. They are masterpieces of contemporary comfort and convenience, each one stylishly decorated with a co-ordinated nature theme.

The lodges have central heating and log effect electric fires to keep you feeling snug even when it’s f-f-f-freezing outside. Everything inside is quality. The beds are super-comfy and clad in fine Egyptian cotton and the verandas are just wonderful for watching the sunsets over the water.

I absolutely loved Brook Meadow. It felt like my own piece of paradise. I can’t recommend it highly enough as a retreat in which to relax and rejuvenate.

In this section of the magazine we offer a selection of such places, havens of peace and tranquillity where a walk on the wild side may mean you cross paths with otters, kites, voles, foxes and other species which generally keep a low profile.Glamping enables people to get close to nature without giving up their creature comforts. They have electricity and running water, civilised amenities, hot showers and even hot tubs. They get to sleep in real beds and have the convenience of quick boiling kettles and hot showers, yet they can cook over a firepit, hear woodland noises they wouldn’t hear above traffic and gaze at starscapes they could never see above the glare of street lights.

These are unique, pleasant and surprisingly private settings with amenable hosts keen to please. Breathe in, breathe out, relax, enjoy until it’s time to go home.

E & B Plumbing & Heating Engineers Ltd 2019 Recommended BusinessAt this time of year every motorist needs to be

prepared for wintery weather and the havoc it can cause. They may well hope for the best but they should also prepare for the worst, including unavoidable hold-ups from accidents, jack-knives and other incidents that become more likely with ice and snow. They could be waiting around for a very long time ….Obviously every driver is recommended to keep their vehicle well serviced and to have breakdown cover in place. The AA also recommends drivers maintain 3mm depth of tread on all tyres, clear all windows thoroughly before setting off and sweep snow off the car roof so it doesn’t fall on the windscreen. Check lights are clean and working and protect the engine with antifreeze.

The AA also recommends that everybody keeps an emergency kit with them all year including a fully charged mobile phone and charger, sunglasses, any personal medication used by the driver or passengers, a first aid kit, a sat nav or printed route for any unfamiliar journeys and a road atlas in case of diversions.

In winter, if an incident should arise, people will also be glad of having a blanket or sleeping bag, shovel, ice scraper, de-icer, screenwash, torch and batteries and snacks. Pack warm clothes, sturdy footwear and flasks of hot drinks. Even better, don’t drive on icy roads if you don’t need to.

Land Rovers are, of course, just made for dealing with tricky weather and countryside conditions whatever the weather. Here in rural Leicestershire we have a specialist service centre, Fox Land Rover, dedicated to keeping all Land Rovers in tip top condition.

Mia Bella Designs is a website designer making it financially comfortable for small and start-up companies to enjoy a professional online presence and Simply Bathrooms has everything for the most private room in the home.

If you haven’t yet found your perfect Christmas cards yet, don’t panic. The online retailer Hatty Boots has a fantastic collection for you to peruse, including enchanting designs never yet seen in the high street stores. Order now and you can still have them written and posted before the Royal Mail delivery deadlines.Hatty Boots is a specialist in selling quality greeting cards for all occasions, always processing sales orders with utmost efficiency. The company has won this magazine’s Award of Excellence as our Greeting Card Business of the Year.

Owners John and Diane Wakefield have selected nearly 1000 cards covering every occasion from new arrivals to anniversary and all the celebrations in between. Many customers buy several blank cards at a time to be used for different occasions. The range of blank cards is extensive, so the buyer can choose a design and write their own words appropriate for each occasion. The humorous cards range from the likes of Punch and Spike Milligan to Jamie Charteris and Oliver Lake’s comical animals.

Hatty Boots particularly like to support small independent artists and publishers, giving a public platform for their eye-catching,

unusual and often truly beautiful images.

Contemporary artists featured in the collection include Amanda Clarke, with richly coloured, detailed pictures inspired by folklore, myth and magical landscapes; Lucy

Pittaway’s with cheerful rural scenes and some very appealing sheep, and Oliver Lake, majoring on comical animals. Also, Nikky Corker, Angie Spurgeon and Kate Andrew all have distinctive designs linked to country living.

John and Diane also take the environment strongly into consideration when choosing

suppliers, ensuring their card is from sustainably managed woodlands certified under the Forest Stewardship Council and have a high recycled content.

“Most of our cards are eco-friendly, having a high amount of recycled paper (or coffee cup) content

and the envelopes are 100% recyclable,” says John. “Together with the use of alcohol-free print, vegetable-based inks and corn-starch outer wrappers a very low or even zero carbon footprint is achieved.”

Hatty Boots often visit trade fairs, exhibitions and specialist events to find the very best artists and publishers that are available in the UK.

TEMPERATURES AND DAYLIGHT HOURS HAVE DROPPED BUT THERE’S NO NEED TO LET COLD WEATHER CAUTION STOP YOU FROM HAVING A GREAT TIME. IF YOU CAN FIND TIME FOR A GETAWAY BREAK OR HOLIDAY THERE ARE PLENTY OF FANTASTIC PLACES AND ACTIVITIES TO ENJOY IN EVERY DIRECTION.Each month in this section of the magazine we highlight places that are extra special places to stay, because of the quality of the accommodation, the exceptional efforts of the owners and the brilliant locations. These are our hidden gems, our choicest venue for away stays of every kind, tucked away in idyllic locations you’d be most unlikely to find by chance. They provide great standards of comfort, cleanliness and attention to detail, perhaps even luxury.

These hotels, bed & breakfasts and self catering properties are all privately owned and run with exemplary care and attention. Guests very often find pleasant surprises and nice little touches that aren’t on the inventories. These may be in the form of welcome packs containing locally produced foods or perhaps supplies so people don’t have to go rushing off in search of a shop selling milk, bread and coffee the moment they arrive. Visitors may find tailor-made information about tourist attractions or entertainments within easy reach, or have use of books, games, CDs and films while they stay.

Our hidden gems never under-deliver. They go the extra mile in ensuring that the people who stay with them get the most from their holiday. With their help, visitors will find so much variety and enjoyment they will almost certainly want to return to the area. If they do, they’ll want to book straight back into the very same hidden gem.

This month our chosen venues are around England and Wales. Many of them, this time, are within a relatively short, easy drive of the Midlands, in the extremely beautiful countryside of Shropshire, Monmouthshire and the Brecon Beacons. Others are in an area that no-one ever tires of visiting, North Wales, and in Pembrokeshire with its wrap around coastal National Park and fascinating places to visit including the UK’s smallest city, St Davids.

Our other venues are in Durham, which has an especially exciting line up of festivals and events scheduled in 2019. County Durham also offers a stunning stretch of heritage coast, dark skies, dales and a double UNESCO World Heritage Site of castle and cathedral.

AS A REGION MID WALES IS HUGE, ENCOMPASSING LANDSCAPES WHICH COMPARE WITH THE BEST IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING THE SOUTHERN PART OF SNOWDONIA AND ALL OF THE BRECON BEACONS NATIONAL PARKS. IT’S DOMINATED BY THE CAMBRIAN MOUNTAINS – THE SO-CALLED ‘GREEN DESERT OF WALES – WITH ONLY 78 PEOPLE PER SQUARE MILE OF POPULATION. IT ALSO HAS THE MOST AMAZING WILDLIFE LIVING IN THE AMAZING TERRAIN OF WHAT UNESCO HAS DUBBED THE DYFI BIOSOPHERE, INCLUDING THE DOLPHINS AND PORPOISES WHICH SOMETIMES SWIM INTO NEW QUAY HARBOUR AND CAN BE SPOTTED FROM THE WELSH COASTAL PATH.

At the north west end of is the historic town of Harlech with a towering castle overlooking the Irish Sea and special enough to be a designated World Heritage Site. Well preserved, this was one of Edward I’s ‘iron ring’ of castles intended to keep the Welsh at bay in Snowdonia but the hero Owain Glyndwr thwarted that intention and was crowned Prince of Wales there in 1404. During the War of the Roses the castle was Lancastrian but fell to the Yorkists in a long siege which generated the song Men of Harlech, so frequently voiced by Welsh rugby fans.

Harlech has much to commend else it including a lively food and drink scene, quirky shops, art and music festivals and a seriously lovely coastal golf course, not to mention gorgeous beaches including one designated for naturists.

Away from the coast the Mid Wales region hugs the English border for 177 miles, broadly following the Offa’s Dyke

earthwork and National Trail which runs from Prestatyn to Chepstow via places well worth visiting, such as Welshpool with its Georgian street scene, impressive Powis Castle and light railway.

Right in the middle of Wales, at an important crossroads, is Rhayader. In the 19th century its strategic position led to six different toll gates being placed on roads in and out of town. The cost to people bringing animals to market became extortionate and eventually led to protests known as the Rebecca Riots.

Heading south, Abergavenny offers the southern ‘Gateway to Wales’, nestled between seven hills at the edge of the Brecon Beacons. If you like hill walking, mountain biking, horse riding, gliding or messing about on rivers or canals, this is the place to do it.

A warm welcome awaits you from Alice and her team at the Railway Inn in Powys, an independent country inn with a restaurant and en suite rooms. This highly hospitable holiday base is just a short walk from the popular Offa’s Dyke National Trail, Powis Castle & Gardens and Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.

The Railway sits on the outskirts of Forden, a village near Welshpool. Frequent guests include shooting parties, walkers, cyclists, golf groups, wildlife watchers and many other people with special interests, as well as general holidaymakers and coach parties. The restaurant can accommodate up to 55 diners and be booked for private functions.

Overnight guests can expect hearty breakfasts and the Railway also provides homemade lunches, dinners, bar snacks and cream teas. Real ales and fine wines are among the many quality offerings for people to enjoy.

The pub currently offers an enticing Christmas menu and is running Friday night Christmas parties until December 21.

The 3 Star Railway Inn can accommodate families in its five guest bedrooms and has a large garden. All the rooms are comfortably furnished and have TV.

Business owner Alice Cardwell-Hodges says: “There are lots of things to enjoy nearby, including a heritage railway, several golf courses, beautiful gardens and fascinating museums. Powis Castle has magnificent gardens and is famous for its collection of Indian and Far Eastern memorabilia.”

Nestling below the imposing Black Mountains, the Half Moon Inn radiates friendliness to all, including families, dogs, walkers, cyclists and holidaymakers. This traditional Welsh inn offers great food & drink and modestly priced bed & breakfast accommodation, providing the perfect rest and refuelling for the energetic who come to explore the Brecon Beacons, hike the Offa’s Dyke Path or cycle Route 42.

The Half Moon, in the village of Llanthony, retains all the character of its original ‘life’ as two workmen’s cottages in the 1700s, including flagstone floors and a roaring fire. The cosy atmosphere provides a convivial background for these cold winter nights, while in warmer weather many head for the garden.

Cruising through the countryside is probably one of the best stress-busting activities to enjoy in Britain. Road House Narrowboats bill their rejuvenating canal holidays in the Brecon Beacons as ‘the quickest way of slowing down’.

Road House has a fleet of four steel narrowboats to hire on the picturesque Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, starting from its home base at Gilwern. A fifth will be added in 2019. Some boats are available for three nights, others for breaks of a week or longer

While many visitors to the Beacons like to challenge themselves with punishing walks and bike rides, those who take the boats tend to favour a more leisurely pace exploring the many assets along the 35 mile closed canal route between Brecon and Pontymoile.

Those assets include plentiful pubs, mountainous surroundings, appealing towns and villages including beautiful Brecon and Crickhowell, recently hailed as having Britain’s Best High Street.

Road House boats are specially designed for easy handling and clever use of space, providing extremely comfortable accommodation complete with central heating, kitchen, shower and flush toilet. They can be hired by anyone from novice to experienced boaters, with full tuition on managing the craft and the canal’s six locks.

Owner Sally Curtis says: “We are a small, family business, so we can give our customers extra attention and very personal service.”Road House Narrowboats, 50 Main Road, Gilwern, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire NP7 0AS; tel 01873 830240, email [email protected] www.narrowboats-wales.co.uk

The shepherd’s hut with its luxurious interior is ideal for couples, equipped with a deeply comfortable double bed, fully equipped kitchen, en suite shower room with

eco-friendly but highly civilised composting toilet, a snug living area with a wood burner and outdoor seating, fire pit and barbecue.

Dogs are very welcome and horse stabling and bike storage is available. Guest reviews praise the peaceful setting and their hosts’ friendliness and eagerness to please.

The location is well away from noise and traffic congestion but within easy reach of the M4 and pleasant market towns Chepstow, Caldicot, Usk and Raglan, each with an ancient castle.

The Forest of Dean is only half an hour’s drive away, offering adventure activities including mountain biking, climbing, zip wiring and kayaking. Green fingered guest house owners have created the most delightful holiday hideaway in their 16th century farmhouse cottage Tal y Bryn, in the unspoiled countryside of Denbigh. It’s a great location from which to explore the Welsh north west coast and Snowdonia.

Tal y Bryn itself is stunning, not only because of its own stylish furnishing and rustic character but also because of its amazing garden of terraces, fountains and year-round colour. This horticultural masterpiece occasionally goes public to raise money for Macmillan Nurses, but usually it is a source of rest, relaxation and wildlife for guests of the four en suite bedrooms.

Two of those bedrooms have spa baths and all are individually decorated, comfortably furnished and very well equipped. Breakfast is an exceptional experience. Along with a full Welsh cooked meal with all the extras it features the yummy Llaeth y Llan yoghurts which are produced at the farm by owners Falmai & Gareth Roberts as their mainstream enterprise, The Village Dairy.

The couple have been producing yoghurt commercially for some 35 years, with great success. When they invested in a brand new dairy last year, Prince Charles officially opened it, viewing gallery and all. Tours of the dairy and garden are available to all with afternoon tea, buffet lunches and suppers as wished. To book, call 01745 540208

The pub is run by a family who have been there for nearly 50 years and provides quality food and drinks for all.

The bar offerings include cask ales from local breweries, more

than 100 malt whiskeys and at least 15 gins, as well as many beverages, alcoholic and otherwise.

Many guests choose to take not only breakfast but also their evening meals at The Lion, finding it the obvious, affordable and very pleasant option when they return from a busy day out exploring.

Local attractions are varied and plentiful, from golf to sea fishing, but for horse lovers the Pen Llyn Lusitano Stud and Riding Centre, closely associated with the pub, is unmissable. HAPPY HOLIDAYS MIGHT WELL HAVE BEEN INVENTED IN NORTH WALES, WITH ITS SPECTACULAR MIX OF MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPES, EXQUISITE BEACHES AND MEMORABLE ATTRACTIONS. EVERYONE FROM ADRENALIN JUNKIES TO GARDENING ENTHUSIASTS CAN FIND EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT HERE IN THE LAND OF DRAGONS.There are five distinct areas in North Wales, Snowdonia National Park, the Llyn Peninsula, Anglesey, Conwy & Llandudno and North East Wales & the Borderlands, all with their own array of great reasons to visit.

Snowdonia ‘the adventure capital of the UK’, is a huge draw for both people who like to keep active and those who just like to ‘be’ in beautiful surroundings. Adventure calls not only from land and sea but also from below ground, where you can go caving or indulge in extreme trampolining, or in the air, perhaps airborne on Europe’s longest zipline.

Starting from the busy harbour town of Porthmadog, at the head of the Llyn Peninsula, are two rail routes through the Snowdonian countryside. The station – refurbished in 2014 – is home base to the Ffestiniog Railway, making a 13½-mile journey to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the Welsh Highland Railway, carrying passengers to Caernarfon via spectacular Aberglaslyn Pass and pretty Beddgelert.

On the north coast, Conwy and Llandudno never fail to please beachgoers, shoppers and heritage lovers. Gardeners get their wows at Bodnant Gardens, while sailors, surfers and paddle boarders just love freshly revitalised Colwyn Bay. Nearby the Welsh Mountain Zoo showcases stunning species such as tigers, monkeys and alligators.

Spectacular views and perfect peace are two of the qualities that guests value most about Green Holiday Barns, modern and comfortable self catering accommodation created from ancient farm buildings overlooking the Shropshire countryside.

They also love the sounds of contented sheep and cattle grazing the pastureland around, along with the buzzards and other wildlife that pop over to visit.

Situated in the dramatic Clee Hills between Ludlow and Bridgnorth, Green Holiday Barns are two very reasonably priced barn conversions which are tastefully decorated, fully equipped and furnished to high standards, retaining their character charm. Stable Barn sleeps six in two doubles (one en suite) and a twin room. Cow Shed

Barn has a double and a single room plus a wetroom shower.

A shared patio makes the most of those striking views, but many visitors strike out on local footpaths including the Shropshire Way. The village of Wheathill, within walking distance, has a convivial pub in which to enjoy a meal and a sociable evening.

Owner Judy Harvey and her husband, Peter, live next door and are always on hand to ensure guests have everything they need.

“We love it here because of the peace and quiet,” says Judy. “If a car goes by you crane your neck to see if it’s anyone you know!”Green Holiday Barns, The Green, Wheathill, Bridgnorth, Shropshire WV16 6QT; tel 01746 787158, email [email protected] www.thegreenholidaybarns.co.uk

SHROPSHIRE SHINES AS A COUNTY WITH OODLES TO SEE, DO AND ENJOY, FROM WONDERFUL NATURAL LANDSCAPES TO RIVETING HISTORY AND HERITAGE. THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE ALL YEAR ROUND, WHETHER THEIR PREFERENCE IS EXPLORING IN THE DELIGHTFUL COUNTY TOWN OF SHREWSBURY TO TAKING THEIR PICK OF OUTSTANDING MUSEUMS.Shrewsbury, enclosed in a loop of the River Servern, has created a vibrant contemporary shopping and social scene right alongside its ancient city walls and medieval buildings. It marries the popular high street chains with a wealth of independent shops, eateries and award-winning indoor market. The oldest buildings are the abbey and the castle, the latter now housing the Shropshire Regimental Museum and affording views across the whole town.

From February 8 to 24 Shrewsbury will be celebrating its most famous son, Charles Darwin in a fascinating festival. This will feature guided tours of the great man’s childhood home and haunts, lectures, drama and events to encourage the curiosity and independent thinking just such as Charles used when he evolved his theory of evolution.

Darwin was an innovator but so too were the Victorians who literally engineered the Industrial Revolution in Ironbridge Gorge. This amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site now features not one but 10 museums tracing the breakthroughs which transformed our society. Among them are the world’s first iron bridge, the Coalport China Museum and Blists Hill Victorian Town, where visitors can spend a fun-filled day of living history experiencing the houses, shops, currency, pastimes and transport of a bygone age helped by chatty characters of the age.

DURHAM WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING PLACES IN THE UK TO VISIT IN 2019, NOW THE YEAR HAS BEEN DUBBED ITS YEAR OF CULTURE.

Some 240,000 people turned out to enjoy the beautiful, remarkable spectacles beamed on to streets, public buildings and River Wear in 2017.

World Cup cricket will be coming to Durham in summer, with South Africa V Sri Lanka on June 28, Sri Lanka V Windies on July 1 and England V New Zealand on July 3.

A £5.5 million Institute of Spanish and Hispanic Art is due to open in a former bank and school turned pizzeria as part of a restoration of the town's 12th century Auckland Castle. There will also be exhibitions and other events celebrating the centenary of mining artist Norman Cornish.

Also in Bishop Auckland, from June to September, will be a new chance to see the epic performance of Kynren, an extravaganza with a cast and crew of more than 1000 plus assorted animals tracing 2000 years of English history from the Roman invasion to World War Two.

World famous Beamish Museum faithfully and engagingly recreates living history from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is currently ‘remaking’ itself and reconstructing a 1950s town.

Gables Pod Camping provides up-to-the-minute camping comforts and use of a hot tub on a site like a secret garden in County Durham countryside. It’s really handy for Durham city, the Dales and attractions of the north east including Kynren, the epic open air show tracing English history in performances throughout summer.

Each deluxe pod is like an en suite hotel room. Two are for two people, one with a dog, the other is a family pod. The site also has beautiful Pear Tree Cottage available for holiday lets.

From 2019 Gables will be licenced for marriage ceremonies and able to accommodate small wedding parties, aided by a new prosecco & gin bar. It will also host retreats with TV’s Gladiator celebrity Jet, Diane Youdale.

The three pods are all well insulated, equipped with electric heaters and have showers, toilets, comfy beds and appliances. Outside are seats and barbecue areas from which to enjoy starry skies unimpaired by light pollution. Guests can soak up the atmosphere by booking use of the hot tub.

There is also the Clock Tower Cabin equipped with two camp beds, toilet and sink but no shower.

The site is within walking distance of Escomb, with a Saxon church and pub. There are stunning local walks and cycle routes.
