Living Incarnationally

God took on flesh and dwelt among us is the doctrine of the Incar-

nation. As we look toward the end of the calendar year, Christmas, the

birth of Jesus, is the celebration of the Incarnation. As we move into the

holiday season, it will be said, “I wish Christmas was all year long.” Living

incarnationally is celebrating Christmas all year long. Incarnational living

is putting feet to our prayers and action to our words. Living incarnation-

ally is the gift of presence, it mirrors the presence of the Incarnate God,

Jesus Christ.

I often hear people say, “I am spiritual; I am not religious.” When I

press the person and ask, “What does that mean?” he or she will say, “I

don’t believe in organized religion or I don’t need to go to church to be spir-

itual.” Spiritualized religion is the antithesis of the Christian faith; to be

Christian is to be present. The next two months is a time for religious, civ-

ic, and parish celebrations. To celebrate is to be present.

Halloween is a civic celebration, although the name Halloween is

derived from All Hallows’ Eve, the day before All Saints. Halloween is

Monday, October 31st. For several years Trinity Church has offered a safe

place in the parish hall for children and youth to “trick or treat.” Those

who are “spiritual” think good thoughts about children. Incarnational liv-

ing rolls up its sleeves and brings copious bags of goodies to set out on a

table in the parish hall.

All Saints Sunday will be celebrated, Sunday, November 6th. It is

the day we remember all those who have gone before us in the hope of res-

urrection. Those who are “spiritual” thinks about the dead, Incarnational

living remembers the departed in concrete ways. Pictures of loved ones are

placed on the altar of remembrance and one is present on All Saints Sun-

day to speak aloud the name of a loved one in the Prayers of the People.

Sunday, November 20th is the Annual Parish Meeting. Those who

are “spiritual” eschew the business and organization of the parish. Incar-

national living understands fully that parish life, like our Lord Jesus

Christ, is both physical and divine. Incarnational living addresses both

the physical and spiritual life of the parish.

Thanksgiving is a civic holiday, but living incarnationally calls on

us to gather as the people of God to give thanks. On Thanksgiving Eve,

Wednesday November 23rd, at 6:00pm, we will gather at Trinity Church

with our sisters and brothers from Faith Lutheran Church to celebrate the

bounty of God’s good earth.

Christmas is the Nativity of our Lord, it is the Feast of the Incarna-

tion. God in Christ took on human flesh and came among us in the child

called Jesus. Those who are “spiritual” wrap themselves in the glitter of

the season, but those who bow in reverence to the Incarnation will seek

Christ in every person and respond with a concrete action. Something as

simple as introducing yourself to the “stranger” is a concrete action; it is

the gift of your presence.

My challenge to you is to the practice incarnational living. Be pre-

sent. Every Sunday is a celebration. Every Sunday the Incarnate God

makes himself present to you in the sacrament of bread and wine, so that

you will be his incarnational presence in the world.

Faithfully,

Father Pat

Feast of St. Francis and the Blessing of the Animals (Oct. 2nd)

Barbara Hinton’s Facebook post…

The flickering of candles, the richly colored

windows, growing even richer with the setting

sun, the talented and devoted choir members with

voices like angels, and our masterful organist and

Officiant at Compline, Martin Fendley...each per-

son worked together to create an awe inspiring

concert and worship service. Quiet spaces were set

between passages which allowed the congregation

to sit in silence to reflect, or simply to soak in the

many facets of our evening with God through mu-

sic. Thank you for sharing your holy gifts with us

this evening.

Interfaith Potluck Supper (Oct. 17th)

In Cele-

bration of the

40th Anniversary

of our Holtkamp

Pipe Organ, Opus

1928, and featur-

ing the music of

Samuel Wesley,

our organist, Mar-

tin Fendley, and our Trinity choir led a special

Compline and Concert on Sunday evening, Oct.

16th.

Kevin Brown’s Facebook post…

Tonight (Oct. 17) Trinity hosted our 2nd Inter-

faith potluck. I want to thank everyone who

helped make this event possible . We had 65 peo-

ple in attendance. It was a great night getting to

know others outside our parish.

World Communion Sunday (Oct. 2nd)

Compline and Concert (Oct. 16th)

Trinity joined many denominations all

over the world in acknowledging World Commun-

ion Sunday. While in our faith tradition, Eucha-

rist is celebrated every Sunday, many denomina-

tions have communion monthly or at other times.

However, on World Communion Sunday, all par-

ticipating denominations celebrate the Eucharist.

In 1940, the Federal Council of Churches

(now the National Council of Churches) endorsed

World Communion Sunday and began to promote

it to Christian churches worldwide.

Thank you, Juanita

Sprague, for the lovely table

in the narthex that reminded

us of the world-wide inclusivi-

ty of Holy Eucharist.

The Feast of St. Francis is celebrated in

early October. On the nearest Sunday, Trinity

honors St. Francis with the Blessing of the Ani-

mals.

Led by Beverly Johnson, volunteers invit-

ed members and friends to bring their pets. More

than 100 humans attended. Father Pat blessed

countless dogs, cats, several turtles and a ferret.

His own dog, Tigo, was last to be blessed and

chose to drink the holy wa-

ter. Father Pat said he was

being blessed on the

“inside” as well as the out-

side!

Thank you, Bev, and

all who made the afternoon

so wonderful.

Online journey. You can find

course descriptions on our website

trinityec.org. Just e-mail Vicki

Meacham at [email protected] and she

will send you the link.

Or, join the Daughters of the King as

they meet for “prayer and share” on Fridays at

Each Sunday, at 9:00 AM, Ralph Barany

leads a class that takes a closer look at the scrip-

tures that are a part of that Sunday’s liturgy. All

are invited to delve more deeply into Holy Scrip-

ture, seeking great understanding.

On Wednesday evenings, at Trinity Cafe we

meet for a meal and adult classes of various topics.

We began the fall semester with classes on Spiritu-

ality & Health and Understanding Poverty. We are

now into a series of classes from the Living the

Question series where Father Pat and others are

leading discussion on Taking the Bible Seriously,

Stories of Creation and Lives of Jesus.

Our children are enjoying

their “1st Journey” in learning about

God, Jesus and our faith. Wendy

Wells, Norma Beck and Amy Beck

gather our children every two weeks

right after church for lessons, music

and fun. Very soon they will be sharing songs during the

10:00 AM Service. What a blessing!

Barb Tipmore and Bryan Thomas meet

with our youth every two weeks to guide as they

continue their faith journey. Their study is called

Journey to Adulthood, a complete youth minis-

try program of spiritual formation for 6th-12th

grades. It encourages relational ministry and us-

es Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach

ministries and both serious and

playful activities to underscore the

two guiding principles of the pro-

gram: 1) Manhood and womanhood

are free gifts from God; and 2)

Adulthood must be earned.

Watch for our youth in-

volvement in the life and worship

of Trinity, such as being scripture

readers on Sunday.

Trinity Traditions cookbooks

still available. An estimated 250

have been sold, to great acclaim!

If you want a cookbook, talk to

Nancy Bradshaw or e-mail her at

[email protected].

All proceeds go to Outreach

ministries.

Led by Pam Terrett, loads

of Love meets a basic need for fam-

ilies in our community to have

clean clothes. Paying for each load

of laundry can be a tremendous

burden for some in Owensboro who struggle fi-

nancially. Trinity Outreach is working to provide

coins or tokens for the washing machines and

dryers as well as detergent, etc. Our volunteers

also take along coloring books, crayons and other

toys to keep the smaller children occupied while

parents are doing the laundry.

Also on the committee is Anice Cooper,

who is enhancing our Loads of Love ministry.

Along with evenings at various laundry mat loca-

tions, Anise and Outreach is working with Roose-

velt House to provide funds and detergent for

laundry.

Not only is this ministry growing, but

so is the love! What can you do to help?

Talk to Pam Terrett. She will put you to

work!

One of two new Outreach initiatives, used bicycles will be repaired, refurbished and given to

those in our local shelters in need of transportation.

What can you do to help? Please consider locating bikes and, if you are handy, help

with repairs. Talk to LeDonna Rae if you will take a leadership role to help get this ministry

off the ground and “on the road.”

CrossRoads is a new service to Owensboro

and, due to your generous support to our Spring

Forward Campaign, the Outreach Committee

was able to provide $5,000 for start-up costs.

How can you be a part of Trinity’s Outreach to

this vital shelter?

Outreach plans to commit to one

evening per month, providing a meal and

shifts of volunteer night companions.

Please talk to Kaye Castlen (our liaison) or

LeDonna Rae for more information or to

volunteer.

CrossRoads Emergency Women & Children’s Shelter

Information from Crossroads’ website

www.crossroadsowensboro.org

Did you know if a woman suddenly finds herself without a place to sleep for the night, there is no-where in Owensboro for her to go? In a crisis situ-ation, she would have to apply to a local shelter, which takes time… even days.

CrossRoads will be opening a true emergency shelter for women in Owensboro. Women will be provided with a safe place to sleep for the night, shower, eat, and wash their clothes. A building has been secured, but much work must be done before the doors can open.

Here are ways you can help!

Make a donation to CrossRoads online via PayPal and note that the donation is for the Emergency Women’s Shelter.

Send a check payable to CrossRoads, Inc., and mail to 2400 Friendship Drive, Suite B, Owensboro, KY 42303. Make a note in the memo section “Emergency Women’s Shelter.

Purchase a copy of A Fiddler’s Prayer or a CD by Jenny Beth Willis to benefit CrossRoads.

Donate one of the following:

Electric hot water heater (40-60 gallon)

Carpet & installation

Tile for floor

Doors

Plumber to supervise the planning and installation of ADA compliant bathroom

ADA compliant bathroom fixtures 100% of all money raised and all goods received will be used to help with renovations and are tax deductible.

feature our Kentucky Wesleyan College trio of

singers – Lydia Wiggins, Sarah Nell Hibbs and

Griffin Kelley – in music of the season from Italy.

They will be joined by guests from the Owensboro

Symphony. On the Third Sunday of Advent,

December 11th, Compline & Concert at 6PM

will offer Noels and music in all things French!

Soprano Lydia Wiggins will sing of the Heart of

the Jesus Child by Alexandre Guilmant and Adol-

phe Adam’s original setting of O Holy Night. Or-

gan works of the eve will also highlight the music

of Guilmant. The last of our Advent Compline

& Concerts will be on Sunday, December 18th

at 6PM. Our own Trinity Choir will present an-

thems from Advent, so if you are not able to join

us for morning worship, DO grab a friend or two

and bring them along to experience the calming,

joyous, beautiful and holy atmosphere of song,

scripture and music. I look forward to seeing ALL

of you on these special, festive eves!

Christmas Eve occurs on Saturday, De-

cember 24th at 5:00 PM & 11PM and Christ-

mas Day Eucharist is on Sunday the 25th at

10AM. Both services will be great celebrations

and you won’t want to miss a single note. Our

11:00 PM Christmas Eve worship will begin at

10:45PM with a Festal Prelude of fun music

and the service will be aurally adorned with

beautiful works for the night of the birth of Our

Lord. Musical guests will include members of the

Owensboro Symphony.

It’s shaping up to be a marvelously musi-

cal Fall and Winter season here at Trinity Epis-

copal Church. I wish everyone in our community

could experience our traditional (with an occa-

sional twist!) worship and liturgy. Think of your

friends and loved ones at this time of year who

may not have a church home – invite them, may-

be do a bit of cajoling - and let them also experi-

ence the power and presence of Jesus Christ

among us AND with us!

As always, I look forward to seeing (and

hearing) you all this Sunday.

SOLI DEO GLORIA ~ Martin

Greetings All!

It seems like Fall weather is upon us…

and that can only mean one thing – big feast days

are ahead!

With Sunday, November 6th, we will cel-

ebrate All Saint’s Day, remembering our loved

ones and those that have gone to be with the

Lord. The music offered during worship will be by

Alexandre Guilmant, a wonderfully underrated,

talented, Romantic composer. Our Bass soloist,

Griffin Kelley, will be featured in his settings of

Pie Jesu (written on the death of his father) and

Benedictus (which blesses all who “come in the

name of the Lord”). Organ works of the day will

also highlight the beauty of this neglected com-

poser.

On Sunday, November 13th, our church

will welcome new members. A favorite of all

those who ever saw the film O brother, where art

thou? is a setting of Down to the river to pray – a

noble and touching early worship song from our

American past. It makes a fitting statement

about the entry into God’s kingdom by Baptism

and entry into your new church family.

The feast of Christ the King will take

place on Sunday, November 20th. Join us as we

celebrate and rejoice at the Kingship of our

Christ and sing eternal alleluias to his name!

Thanksgiving Eve service will be held

on Wednesday, November 23rd at 6PM. The

appointed Psalm of the day is Psalm 100, the Ju-

bilate Deo – O be joyful in the Lord! Our choir

will offer a setting by James Nares, another ex-

cellent composer who is unjustly forgotten. We

will be joined by the clergy and members of Faith

Lutheran Church – come and make them feel

welcome and to “gather together to ask the Lord’s

blessing”.

Our second annual Advent Compline &

Concert series will begin on the First Sunday

of Advent, November 27th at 6PM. This first

program will feature music of the season for the

Organ along with musical guests on Cello and

Oboe (Kirsten Ahnell). The Compline & Con-

cert for Sunday, December 4th at 6PM will

have shared how they are blessed by the commu-

Please take a few minutes to think about

Thanksgiving Service Nov. 23rd

Advent & Christmas at Trinity

November & December at Trinity (mark your calendar)

All Saints Sunday is a major feast day

that celebrates the communion of saints, that

cloud of witnesses to the faith with whom God

has surrounded us. On this special Sunday we

will witness the baptism of infants as well as re-

member those of our parish that have gone on to

God's nearer presence during the last year.

As in years past, Jeff Hawks has prepared

a special table in our narthex to remember those

loved ones that have gone

ahead into God’s near

presence. Please bring

photos to be included on

the altar. (Be sure to have

your name somewhere on

the frame so it can be re-

turned.)

Annual Parish Meeting (APM) Nov. 20th

All Saints Sunday—November 6th

Every fall, Trinity members are encour-

aged to attend the Annual Parish Meeting. On

Sunday, November 20th, we will have a potluck

lunch immediately following the 10:00 Eucharist.

After we eat, Father Pat will present

church leaders to review various functional areas

of ministry, such as financial, facilities, educa-

tion, etc. 2016 successes will be shared as well as

2017 ideas.

Also, the 2017-2019 term vestry members

slate (4 new members) will be presented for par-

ish consideration.

This is an important opportunity to learn

about Trinity and to provide input into Trinity's

ministries. Come prepared to listen, ask ques-

tions and be a part of the decisions made in your

parish.

On Wednesday, November 23rd, at 6:00

PM, Trinity will host Faith Lutheran Church for

our annual Thanksgiving Service. Pastor Jane

Rothman from Faith will be our preacher and

will join Father Pat in celebrating the Eucha-

rist.

Something different this year for our par-

ish is that we will have a Pie Social immediately

following the service. This is something Faith

did last year when they hosted us. It was so

charming, we want to continue this lovely tradi-

tion. Please let Kevin Brown know if you are

willing to bring a pie.
