From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 18 Week Eight Term Four Tuesday, 28th November, 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, “It’s almost Advent; only a few weeks till Christmas!” Was it really a whole year since we last heard those words? Afraid so! However, it’s not all bad news because, for Christians everywhere, the Season of Advent affords us the opportunity to get in touch with our own spirituality, to reflect on the journey we’ve taken over the past year and to set goals for the coming year – spiritual resolutions. The Season of Advent offers us each year an opportunity to seek God within the boundaries of our souls while living outwardly amidst the noise and activity of the world around us. The four weeks of Advent allow us time to ponder how Jesus came into this world in such a stunningly humble way. As we contemplate His birth in a bed of straw in a messy stable, perhaps we see our own life as being a little messy too. Our life is often distracted, self-centred and sometimes leaves us wishing we were better people. But if we can slow down and refocus our attention, we might realise that God is there, waiting to love us even though we have so many unfulfilled good intentions and so many unfulfilled desires about our spirituality. The bumper sticker that reads, “Be patient; God isn’t finished with me yet” is a reminder that, in God’s eye, we are a work in progress. Our faith is not a vaccine that prevents bad things from happening to good people. Rather, our faith is the new seed that brings forth new life and hope out of a life that contains struggle, difficulty, conflict and maybe misunderstanding. Christians, during Advent, are like the shepherds from the Bethlehem hills; we are called from our everyday activities to allow God to re-enter our lives, even when we are feeling least “religious” or “ready” for His coming, for His arrival within us. GRADUATION Last week we officially farewelled our 2017 HSC students with their Graduation Ceremony and Dinner. It was a wonderful night and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. I congratulate all who attended for the way they supported all our students on the night. The whole College Community participates in some way towards this event to make it memorable – but special mention must be made to the following people: Grad Ball organizing team of Karen Davies, Amanda Simko and Robyn Stuart, The indispensable ICT, Maintenance, Cleaning, and Grounds Teams who do an enormous amount of work both in setting up for and packing down after the Ball Therese Hughes from the Office of Student Learning The Heads of House Sr. Mary for creating our Graduation Cake The 2018 Captains and the Year 11 volunteers. And finally, but not least, the Administration and Teaching Staff who, each year, gladly volunteer their time to participate in some way. They are either involved in the set-up or the pack down of the Hall and the huge amount of administration that goes on behind scenes for the preparation of the Awards, Certificates, Tickets, booklets and a myriad of other necessary items needed. GATES – SECURITY Anyone arriving at the College will now find that we have started locking more of the gates allowing access to the College grounds. I realise that this will be an inconvenience for some, but the security and safety of our students and staff are more important than requiring people to walk an additional 100m to enter the property. Tuesday, 28th November, 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

“It’s almost Advent; only a few weeks till Christmas!” Was it really a whole year since we last heard those words?

GRADUATIONLast week we officially farewelled our 2017 HSC students with their Graduation Ceremony and Dinner. It was a wonderful night and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. I congratulate all who attended for the way they supported all our students on the night. The whole College Community participates in some way towards this event to make it memorable – but special mention must be made to the following people:• Grad Ball organizing team of Karen Davies, Amanda

Grounds Teams who do an enormous amount of work both in setting up for and packing down after the Ball

• Therese Hughes from the Office of Student Learning • The Heads of House• Sr. Mary for creating our Graduation Cake• The 2018 Captains and the Year 11 volunteers.

GATES – SECURITYAnyone arriving at the College will now find that we have started locking more of the gates allowing access to the College grounds. STUDENTS NOT RETURNING IN 2018I have written on a number of occasions asking parents / carers to write to me confirming if their son or daughter is not returning in 2018. As recently as last week I was still hearing reports from Heads of House and some of the student’s friends telling me that a number of students have indicated they are leaving – I have no confirmation of this fact from their families. We are presently staffing classes for 2018 and I have to do this on the basis of accurate student numbers and I must know by the end of this week if your son / daughter is not returning.

TRANSITION UPDATEA letter will be emailed tomorrow on behalf of the Transition Project Team in relation to the context of the transtion. The members of the project team are:• Mr Dirk Botha (Lismore CSO)• Mr Ron Fletcher (Lismore CSO)• Br John Hilet (Principal – TCCL)• Ms Karen Davis (Deputy College Council Chair – TCCL)• Mr Glenn Roff (supporting Br John)

A similar communication has already been sent to staff. I will continue to update the Trinity Catholic College community once the Transition plan / timeline has been developed.

VIVIEN O’LEARY2017 is a significant time in the teaching career of Ms Vivien O’Leary as it marks her 50th year as a teacher.

This is a remarkable milestone and a complete credit to Ms O’Leary’s unwavering enthusiasm for her profession. She inspires both junior and senior students with her passion for teaching English and is undoubtedly revered by staff as well. Ms O’Leary’s wisdom and calm sees her as an integral part of the English Department and the

wider Trinity community.

We salute you Vivien and your heart and soul that continues to drive your desire to teach the young minds entrusted to you.

START 2018We are once again having a staged commencement to the school year in 2018. The arrangements for the start of next year are as follows:• Monday 29 & Tuesday 30 January – Staff Days. • Wednesday 31 January – classes commence for Years 7, 11 and 12.• Thursday 1 February – classes for all year levels.

Assistant Principal - Middle School

The year’s end is fast approaching and with it comes a raised level of activity and anxiousness.

Getting holiday plans in order; Christmas presents; Christmas Day; and so on. In the school context it is a little the same. Getting a timetable ready for next year; inducting new students; getting resources together; writing reports; and for students, getting assignments; tasks and exams completed. Currently we are in a week that will see the completion of most exams and tasks. Yes, some students are more anxious than normal, but that is expected with any activity that tests us. It is a delicate balance. Some heightened awareness is probably good, but too much can be detrimental. The best way to keep the lid on the anxiety is to prepare well and know beforehand that you have done the work to cover most eventualities. Hopefully, your child will come through this process with a strength that only can be found in testing times.

SEXTINGLast week parents of students in Year 8-10 would have received an email from a group of Trinity staff highlighting some of the concerns we hold with student mobile phone use and in particular sexting. I encourage those who have received the email to sit down with your child and let them read the letter. This should lead into a discussion that will, if needed, place some balance back into responsible use of mobile devices. In the email letter were two resources that parents can access if they need more information and assistance. I also wish to draw your attention to the work of the Parent Assembly group who, over the past couple of years, have been providing parents with opportunities to assist in raising children and dealing with issues such as sexting.

TEXTBOOK RETURNIn winding up the year all students in Years 7-9 will need to return their Textbook in presentable condition and ensure their locker is cleaned out and their locker key returned. It would be great if parents could have a check of bedrooms at home and ensure that textbooks are pulled from under the bed and returned by your son/daughter. Students are to be reminded that they are responsible for textbooks loaned to them and it is their responsibility to return them in a condition that closely reflects the condition of the books when they received them. The flood should have only impacted mainly Year 7 and 9 students and all of these students, plus others impacted by the floods, should have already informed the College soon after the flood, of their texts that were lost in the flood.

TIME OUTTime Out is used in the College to remove students from class, who are impeding the flow of a lesson. That is, the actions and behaviours of some is stopping others from learning. Once the student is removed the lesson can continue. While the vast majority of students will never need a Time Out or ever receive a detention, there are some who need to be called to account for their actions. If your child has received a Time Out, then it is significant and steps must be put into place to ensure it does not happen again. Parents of students in Years 7-9 will receive notification from me if their child is placed on a Time Out.

Mr John Loadsman

On 20th November, a group of Year 10 students assisted with the running of small groups at the Year 5 Leadership Day at St Carthage's Primary School. Each of us was assigned a group of 7-8 students. In these groups, we ran some fun activities with the focus theme of leadership. By doing this we were able to help expand their understanding of what it takes to be a leader and helped to prepare them for their given roles as future Year 6 Leaders. Overall the day was fun and informative, not only for the Year 5 students but also for us. By assisting with the groups our leadership abilities also grew.

The academic year is rapidly drawing to an end here at the College, yet there remains much to be done over the next two weeks. I take this opportunity to ask parents/carers to ensure their daughter/son attends classes for the remainder of the Term. Classes conclude on Tuesday 12 December at 3.20pm. I appreciate your assistance with this.

YEAR 7 - 10 EXAMINATION BLOCK:This examination block will conclude this week. Students have been generally cooperative to date which is very pleasing. The purpose of this examination block is to familiarise our students with the exam process and associated protocols. For some students in Years 7 - 9, applying for Extensions and/or completing Illness Misadventure Applications is a new process. It is very important students develop an awareness of these protocols and understand the consequences if they are not followed, so that positive habits are formed prior to studying in the senior school.

Again I remind all Year 7 - 10 students of the need to follow the correct process when it comes to issues surrounding illness/misadventure on the day of an examination: students/parents must contact the Office of Student Learning on the morning of their examination if they cannot attend: 66276603. Relevant evidence of their illness/misadventure will also be required. I take this opportunity to wish our Year 7 - 10 students well for their final examinations.

SEMESTER 2 REPORTS + YEAR 11 INTERIM REPORTSStudents in Year 7 - 10 will receive their Semester 2 Report on Friday 15 December 2017. Students in Year 11 will receive an Interim Report on 15 December. These will be delivered by email.

HSC RESULTS & ATAR RELEASE DATESThe 2017 HSC results will be released on Thursday 14 December from 6.00am. Students can access their results through Students Online. The following day, Friday 15 December, UAC will release ATARs to those HSC students who were eligible to receive one. The College does not receive records of student ATARs so we would appreciate students contacting the Office of Student Learning on the morning of 15 December with their ATAR results. I reiterate what I said at the Year 12 Graduation Assembly: numbers are but a small indication of student ‘success’ and/or ‘potential.’ It is important to keep HSC and ATAR results in context, whilst always celebrating personal best efforts.

SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND ITS IMPACTA colleague recently sent this infographic to me, which is both informative and concerning:

In my mind, as an educator, it raises a number of questions:• How does social media use impact students’ self-perception?• To what extent does accessing social media impact student performance in the classroom?• How is social media impacting authentic interaction with fellow humans?• Do we speak enough about the differences between the cyber world and the real world? • Is social media helping young people to become good digital citizens?• What will be the long-term impact of addictive social media use on the individual and their relationships?Perhaps these questions could be used to spark a conversation between parents and students in the near future.

Congratulations to Year 9 boys Charles Mitchell, Francis Rupnick and Oliver Rupnick on their recent New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) selections.

Charles was recently selected in the NSWCCC U/15 Cricket Team to contest the NSW All Schools Championships in Sydney in December.

Francis was selected in the NSWCCC Open Water Polo Team to contest the NSW All Schools Championships in Sydney in March next year. Francis will be joined by twin brother Oliver, who also gained selection as a reserve.

We wish all 3 boys the best of luck at their respective Championships.

MARIST CRICKETWe would like to wish the Open Boys Cricket squad the best of luck as they depart on Monday for Auckland, New Zealand to contest the 2017 Australasian Marist Cricket Carnival.

The carnival will be hosted by Sacred Heart College, Auckland between 5-12 December.

The squad is Lachlan Barnsley, Oscar Stahl, Tranan Burvill, Charles Mitchell, Will Nash, Jack Everingham, Kurt Orlanno, Reece Gallagher, Kyle Stones, Jordan Holmes, Nick Somerville, Ryan Lee and Nathan Stewart and will be coached by Mr Patrick Martin.

The squad will not only contest five 50 over a side matches, but also encounter several new cultural experiences as well as Marist hospitality within the host school.

GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPSYesterday, three Trinity Golfers contested the Diocesan Golf Championship at the Coffs Harbour Golf Club.

Jack Harlen-Robertson, playing off scratch, carded an outstanding 74 in challenging conditions to take out the Diocesan Championship by a massive 8 strokes.

This victory is Jack’s second Diocesan title in succession after taking out the 2016 Championship by 9 strokes at the Safety Beach Golf Club.

Jack has a huge future in the sport and we wish Jack all the best in his future golfing pursuits.

TRINITY’S MASTERCHEF 2017CONGRATULATIONS to Edie Owen who has taken out the coveted Year 7 MasterChef title for 2017!

Edie's take on an old favourite - spaghetti bolognese - not only impressed the judges but met all the nutritional criteria required.

Edie's project covered all the planning aspects for the meal including meeting the Australian Dietary Guidelines, providing a range of nutrients and being affordable.

The student body voted with their stomachs last week with the spaghetti bolognese meals selling out in no time on Thursday and Friday.

Thanks to Mrs Wotherspoon and the canteen staff for supporting this activity!

GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

On Wednesday 15th November, the student leaders in the Captains’ Council and Student Representative Council went to a leadership conference day held by GRIP Leadership at Southern Cross University.

GRIP (standing for Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity, People) is an organisation dedicated to giving seminars and presentations to schools regarding the roles of leaders and opportunities for positive change within a school environment. As SRC representatives, we were privileged to attend the conference, where we were enlightened and inspired by the GRIP leadership team through inspirational anecdotes, good humour, bountiful experience and relevant wisdom. Trinity was just one of many local schools who attended this event, and it was a wonderful experience to connect with and talk to leaders of other schools in the area. Throughout the day we, as leaders, learnt the importance of working as a cohesive team to achieve positive change in our school as well as the importance of bringing integrity to our role. The GRIP team shared their wisdom on being a leader in high school and how to reach your full potential as a student leader. The day wasn’t all work though, with the GRIP team involving all those attending in fun activities and challenges, including a dance party towards the end. The conference was masterfully presented, blending moments of involvement and entertainment with important lessons regarding leadership and integrity. It provided everything we need to know as student leaders to introduce positive change within Trinity and ensure that we have maximum impact as leaders over the next year.

Both the Captain’s Council and the SRC really enjoyed the conference and were very grateful to have been involved in such a rewarding experience.

BUON VIAGGIO After a year in the planning, 40 students, staff and parents have finally touched down in Italy yesterday morning. The next 4 weeks will see us totally immerse ourselves in Italian culture – using our language skills daily and improving our skills at a five-day Italian course at a Language School in Florence. We will also visit some important Italian cities and landmarks and no doubt eat lots of glorious Italian cuisine. We look forward to sharing some of our experiences with you in the first newsletters of next Term.

Mr Ferderer’s Year 7 Mandatory Technology classes finished their last assessment for the course by filling their chocolate boxes. The task was planned, designed, created and then used to package and market their rocky road chocolate recipe. The class did a lead in, formative task, labelling a noodle box in preparation for the chocolate box task. Both classes also made a chicken and ginger noodle dish to put into their labelled noodle boxes.

My Year 12’s finished their year-long HSC Multimedia Major Projects a few weeks ago with outstanding results. The students planned, designed and created their own personal brand or explored an idea which showcased their multiple skills in creative digital media using mostly Adobe Software.

Most of the student’s projects consist of creating a logo to brand their projects. A main component that usually takes the form of video or graphic design depending on the student’s interests. A website created in Adobe Muse to

present and promote their idea or brand, and a physical item which could be a design for a t-shirt in which they get printed or it might be a movie prop that they have created and used in their project.

YEAR 701 RE UNIT - PRAYERThis Term all of Year 7 have been studying a Unit of work on Prayer. As part of this study, in small groups, they had to prepare and present a Liturgy to the class. Each group had to select their theme, prepare a sacred space and follow a liturgical structure which included a liturgy booklet and a supporting ICT Presentation. I was very impressed with the quality of the Liturgies. Well done to all!

The Parent Assembly Team’s final presentation for 2017, ‘Learn how to support your Learner’ was held last Wednesday evening (22 November) in the Champagnat Theatre. We thank Julie and Steve Nixon from “All Wheel’s Driving Driver Education’ for providing us with an invaluable information session for the Parent’s, Carers and Students who attended. Julie and Steve highlighted very useful tips, websites and resources that are all available to assist us with this very important learning to drive process. For example, have a look at ‘KEYS 2 DRIVE’ funded by the Australian Govt, it provides a FREE driving lesson with an accredited professional Driving instructor and parents are encouraged to go with you in the car to listen and learn. It offers Parents and Superviors tips and ideas to guide their learner through the process. To find out more and register for your free lesson go to www.keys2drive.com.au, also check out the variety of ‘Learner Driver Apps’ that are now available e.g. ‘L2P & ‘LICENCE READY’.

Research has shown that learner drivers are some of the safest drivers on the road, but the moment they gain their P Plates and begin to drive solo their risk of serious injury spikes dramatically. Steve and Julie’s message was clear, the type of learning experience we offer our Learner Drivers can make a big difference. In essence our focus should be on TEACHING DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR THE DRIVING TEST.

Here are some other suggested resources & websites: YouthSafe EBook - www.youthsafe.org, Safe driver Course - www.safedriver.org.au (or phone Lismore PCYC 6621 62760), Centre for Road Safety - www.roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au, Geared - www.rms.nsw.gov.au/geared/, Roads and Maritime - www.rms.nsw.gov.au, All Wheels Driver Education - www.allwheelsdrivereducation.com.au.

All in all 2017 has been a busy, productive and successful one for the PA team, we have been able to provide a wide variety of experiences that both inform and support Parents and Carers. We are motivated to offer more of the same in 2018 here at Trinity and encourage Parents and Carers to access what will be on offer across the Lismore Diocese next year. We thank Brother John, Mr John Loadsman and the Trinity Staff for their ongoing support and help to advertise our events and raise the Parent Assembly Team’s purpose and profile in the school community. In particular, we acknowledge and thank Sr Mary Bruggy and Mrs Zelinda Brown for their invaluable assistance, ‘hands on’, support and enthusiastic encouragement they have both offered throughout the year! Last but not least a big thank you to the Parents, Carers and Staff who have attended and supported the PA initiatives throughout the year. We look forward to your company again in 2018 so spread the word and WATCH THIS SPACE!

Wishing everyone a safe and joyous end to the school year.

The 2018 C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships open on Monday 4th December and close on Friday 5th January 2018.

C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships are one of the most generous privately funded scholarships available to undergraduate students in Australia. Each residential scholarship is valued at up to $60,000 over three years.

Information about the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship and an application form are available at www.hawkerscholarship.org or by contacting the secretary to the Trustees on 08 8127 1654.

The Charles Hawker Scholarship perpetuates the memory of scholar, soldier and pastoralist Charles Allan Seymour Hawker and commemorates the achievements of one of Australia’s most respected statesmen.

C.A.S. Hawker Scholarships have been presented by Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Australia’s Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb AC, South Australian Premier Hon Jay Weatherill MP, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Hawker family member Hon David Hawker AO and former Governor-General The Hon Major General Michael Jeffery AC.

The scholarships are available to all Australian students. The majority have been awarded to students entering their first year of university study.

Selection is largely based on personal qualities and demonstrated leadership as well as academic ability. Undergraduate Hawker Scholars are able to attend a range of Australian educational institutions.
