Dear Friends in Christ,

On July 4, we celebrate the birth of our beloved country. Along with all of you, I

love my country and our unique place in the community of nations. Love of

country – like love of family – has some built-in contradictions. We love what is

good and praiseworthy, but we are not blind to the negatives. We cultivate the

ability to love our family members despite the obvious problems and failures and

unlovable behaviors. And we can and should do the same for our fellow citizens

and our country.

In the wake of the Orlando event and in the heat of a negative political campaign,

many rhetorical stink bombs are being thrown around. People on all sides of the

various issues have been demonized and vilified by those on the opposite side.

How should Christians behave in this climate of anxiety, fear and harsh

language ?

“ Repay no one evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the

sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends upon you, live peaceably with all

people. Beloved, never avenge yourselves but leave it to the wrath of God; for it

is written ‘Vengeance is mine. I will repay’ says the Lord….Do not be overcome

by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12: 17 – 21

How should Christians speak about elected government officials who are trying to

do their job ?

“ Remind them to be submissive to governing authorities, to be obedient

and ready for any honest work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to

be gentle and to show perfect curtesy to all people.” Titus 3: 1 – 2

How should we Christians speak about those who are offering themselves

as candidates for office ? Especially the ones we don’t like and with whom we

have profound disagreement ?

“ I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be

made for all people, for kings and for all who are in high positions, that we may

lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good

and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires that all people be

saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2: 1 -3

Real love of country is rooted in the love of God and our neighbors - even the

neighbors with whom we have the most profound disagreements. We who follow

Jesus should be models of a different way of living.

Letter to the Parish from our Senior Warden, Troy McFarlane

On May 21, I addressed the Parish at the 8am and 9:45 services. I thought I would follow up with

my comments in the newsletter for anyone who missed it that morning.

Good Morning,

My name is Troy McFarlane, I am your Senior Warden for Trinity’s Vestry. I have been a member

of Trinity for over 20 years. My wife and I came to Trinity looking for a church and instead we

found a family. I have three kids, Colin our oldest son turning 20 in just a couple weeks having just

completed his 2 second year at University of New Haven, (thank you all for your continued

prayers), Courtney our 17 year old high school senior who will be joining me on our first medical

mission to Nigeria, and Michael our youngest who will be confirmed on June 4th . They all grew up

here at Trinity, Baptized, First Communion, Confirmation and as I said in a couple of weeks Mike

will be confirmed. I can’t tell you the number of ministries that have supported us over the years.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I want you to know how much we love our church family.

It has been a while now since Father Tom shared with us that he will be retiring, or should I say he

will be staying very busy in ministry – It’s just a time when he will draw his paycheck from a

pension rather than a church budget, and will be building more medical clinics in Nigeria and

reaching more people with the love of Jesus..

Since we are fully aware of Father Tom’s retirement plans we (the Vestry) found it only prudent to

begin to take steps to make sure we do our part in making sure it is a smooth transition for Trinity.

I have reached out to many of you to help us in the process of discerning God’s will for our parish

after Father Tom’s retirement on September 25, 2016.

We have taken the following actions to prepare for the change in leadership.

On March 23, 2016 the officers of the Vestry (Paul Scott, Judy Gessford, Jim Karadimas, Mel

Smith and I) met with Bishop Ian Douglas and Canon Lee Ann Tolzman to discuss the transition

process for the change in leadership. The meeting was very informative. We shared with the Bishop

the actions we have started to prepare for Fr. Tom’s Retirement. The Bishop was pleased with our

progress, especially our focus on prayer. Canon Tolzman, informed us of the changes to the Search

process, to be more of a transition process. The process no longer creates a parish profile book,

instead the church website is used to share our profile in photos, videos and print. She said, she

visited our website and we are well on our way.

1. Our focus during this time prior to Father Tom’s retirement on September 25, 2016:

a. Prayer team – we have a prayer team, led by Sandy Cross. We are distributing a parish

prayer card today, to engage the parish. (There is a copy at the end of this article and

also on the bookcases at both church entrances.)

b. Retirement Party planning – we have a team, led by Bob Chagnon and Louise

Boehm, which is planning Father Tom’s retirement celebration. It will be held in

Simsbury at the River View. Invitations will be going out in soon.

c. Discernment Committee – We have established a team lead by Kathy Sutton. They

are working on updating the Trinity website to reflect our Parish in the Community.

2. After Father Tom’s retirement we will focus on getting input from the whole parish using

surveys/small group meetings.

This is the time for us to celebrate Father Tom and Mary Jane, and make sure they feel the love of

our parish family with an overwhelming turn out on September 25th.

A Trinity Farewell to George and Linda Lynch On Sunday June 5, 2016 Trinity said a fond farewell to George and Linda Lynch who are moving to New Hampshire. Our Parish sent our friends off by surrounding them with prayer for many blessings for this new chapter in their lives.

Then a special reception was held in the Parish Hall provided by the prayer group Linda had been apart of for about 40 years. There were, of course, delicious goodies to be shared with all.

First the choir sang a new version of “Mame” written by Phyllis Butta just for this occasion using George and Linda’s names. It was a hit! Then guest speakers spoke in appreciation of the uncountable acts of service George and Linda have done. The Rev. Taylor Albright from Southwick Community Episcopal Church came to recognize the very large part that they played in helping him found that Church. They answered a call for help and left Trinity for about three years and did everything from manual labor, to providing music and teaching the children as Fr. Taylor planted a new church. Sam Paul read a letter of recognition and gratitude from Meadowbrook of Granby thanking them for the many years they have held a service for the residents and staff at Meadowbrook were they have touched so many lives! Elaine Shaw was up next, expressing her thanks to the Lynch family for hosting the bible study/prayer group for so many years and for their friendship and help with so many things.

Then Fr. Tom presented them with a few gifts to remember Trinity by. First they were given their very own pew to take with them so they could still sit in it and join us for the 7 am. Wednesday morning service. Then he gave them an icon of Trinity and expressed our love and appreciation for them.

God Bless You George and Linda. We will miss you dearly!

Summer 2016

Yes, it's way too early to be talking about Christmas, but its never too early to be talking

about the love and power that Christ brings to everyone all over the world! Operation Christ-mas Child goes to places that many of us haven't even heard of! It brings joy to children, but

the follow up program called The Greatest Journey continues the "gift" by teaching the kids and therefore, their parents, about Christ and how much they are loved. The magazine called

Prayer Point put out by Samaritan's Purse, the creator of Operation Christmas Child, tells stories of the work Samaritan's Purse does throughout the world including warm-hearted

stories of what happens to children who receive Operation Christmas Child boxes. The four pictures in this article are from Cameroon, Moldova, Belize, and Fiji. If you have donated to

Samaritan's Purse through OCC, you may be getting this magazine. I love reading about how our shoe boxes impact so many lives. I hope you have an opportunity to read Prayer Point. I

always have copies on the OCC display table.

On another, somewhat sad note, this will be my last year coordinating Operation Christmas Child at Trinity. If you have seen me in action, you know how much this ministry means to

me, but it is time I passed the baton to someone else. I know there is a great deal of enthusi-asm for this program within our church, so I am asking that someone come forward to take

over for me next fall, 2017. I will coordinate this Fall, so you have a whole 18 months to think about it! Please let me know if you are interested. I will go over what is expected and

will certainly pass on all my materials. Please think and pray about it.

As the school year ends and summer takes over our lives, Christmas is a far way off. I can't help but think that the children who get our boxes, have many years of no Christmas, no

gifts, no Jesus, and none of the incredible comforts we have. Should you pass by a sale of items that would go well in the boxes, why not buy some, even if it is 95 degrees and humid?!!

God bless you, my friends! This year, let's top last year's total of 178. I would love to end

with a Trinity donation of 200 boxes! I will again offer you the pre-made boxes, but those pretty, wrapped ones are still welcome!

Tapestry Benefit Programs June 4 & 5, 2016

Dear Tapestry Singers,

I want to write and thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to the "Over the Rainbow"

Concerts on June 4 and 5. The music was truly beautiful, inspiring and uplifting. You all gave so much

of your energy and talent and time to this effort and it really showed. It was evident in the sound of

your voices, the smiles on your faces and the evident joy in your performances.

I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am for everything you have done for Kateri Medical Clinic over

the last many years. Your singing has, quite literally, saved peoples' lives. The money raised in your

concerts has helped to provide life-saving medicine for people who cannot afford it.

When we were planning this year's concert - only one month after our triennial Benefit Dinner - our fund

-raising expectations were lowered somewhat. We figured that so many of our strong supporters would

have already given so generously at the dinner that our concert offerings would probably be smaller.

I believe Paula set a goal of $8,000 based on these expectations.

Well I am writing to tell you that, as of today, we have received $10,119. This is a wonderful result and

will help thousands of people with medicine this coming summer. Because of a very favorable exchange

rate between US dollars and Nigerian currency this year, our dollars will have much greater spending

power than in previous years. This gift made possible by your singing will provide the amount of

medicine that would have cost $16,000 last year.

I know you all sing with Tapestry because you love music - and love Paula (who wouldn't ?). But your

love extends to a very practical expression of love to the thousands of people you have helped this year.

You won't see them face to face - but I will. When I look in their eyes, I will think of all you have done

to bring them love and healing and hope. And I will send you a lot of pictures.

We Need Your Help

Have you noticed how beautiful our grounds look? The roses are outstanding and everything is

blooming. We have pansies in the Spring, hosta throughout the Summer, beautiful grasses Summer

through Fall and a variety of shrubs and trees that make our grounds so wonderful!

It doesn’t happen by itself. Lucian Cascio is our primary gardener and landscaper and puts in many

hours, planting, weeding, mulching and fertilizing and then pruning and trimming too!

! He would love to have some volunteers to help him !

The roses need pruning after every blooming cycle to promote the next blooms. Plus there

is always edging, weeding and mulching to be done.

Do You Know About Our

St. Elizabeth House Ministry?

Each one of you is called in many directions as we

do various church projects, but we are always

looking for some people who would like to be

St. Elizabeth team members.

Each team cooks for about 50 people on their scheduled weekend. We

prepare and then deliver a dinner to St. Elizabeth’s at 5:00. Generally we

are back to Trinity around 6:00. It is a great way to try this ministry and

see if you would like to be on a regular team!

My sincere thanks to the

“knitting ladies” for my beautiful prayer

shawl. It comforted me for two weeks in the

hospital, day and night - and your prayers

were part of my recovery. Now I want to knit

a shawl for someone else. PASS IT ON!

Dear members of the Sacred Shawl Ministry,

I want to thank you for your prayers during

the time of my illness. God must have heard

your prayers because I started to feel better.

I want to thank you for the very beautiful

shawl (of course blue is my favorite color)

made by your very kind hands. As I wore it I

felt enveloped by God’s love. I wore it all the

time while in the hospital, and even now that

I am home and continue to improve.

Thank you so much and may God bless you

all for your kindness and generosity.

One of the biggest blessings of summer is the chance to

watch everything grow, and feel the warmth of the sun (as

long as it's not too hot!) All the preparation of planting,

nurturing and watering have begun to show results. If you

have a garden, there should already be vegetables or

flowers ready for picking. This process is God's way of

showing us in "real time" His faithfulness in keeping His

promise that He will never leave or forsake us.

In the healing ministry, we must keep the same focus and

hope. Often times we pray for something important to us

for a very long time, but without any visible results. These

are perhaps the most challenging experiences for us.

I think that is why there are so many passages in the Bible

that talk about steadfastness, courage, and especially

HOPE. Because we believe in a God that is personal, we

know that He sees and hears every need and every prayer.

The struggle is to continue to believe that He will act, and

trust that He knows what He is doing.

In His wisdom, God has put us in community because we

can lift one another up when we feel discouraged, pray for

one another when we are sick, sad, lonely or distraught,

all of which helps give us hope that God is real, loves us

and that He is with us in our time of need.

There is prayer available at church every Sunday.

Someone from the Healing Team is in the alcove by the

back door of the church on each Sunday at the 9:45 am.

a team at the altar. They will gladly pray with you for any

need you bring forward.

Thanks be to God for His faithfulness in always being

with us, especially in our difficult times. Let someone

share your burden by asking for prayer. It's a blessing

both given and received by all involved.

Joggers For Julian

I write this note today to ask you to come and join our family for a very informal walk on

Saturday, June 25 in honor of our grandson Julian Golden. Some of you may know that he left us

to be with his great- grandparents in heaven in March of 2011 at the age of four. Each year since

then, our son has organized a team of runners/walkers to participate in an event offered by the

Children's Cancer Research Foundation's "Time To Fly", held in Minneapolis, MN where Julian

lived. We all support this organization's quest to find a cure for children's cancer so that other

families don't have to have the same experience our family did. This year marks the fifth year of

Julian's passing and we would like to have a small commemorative walk here in Connecticut at

the same time as the event in Minneapolis.

If you can, please meet us at Iron Horse Boulevard in Simsbury, Saturday, June 25 at 9:30 a.m. It is

convenient to park in the lot at the corner of Iron Horse Boulevard and Drake Hill--just behind

Fitzgerald's. We can walk from that end of Iron Horse to the other, near Simsbury Bank, and back again--

or stop part way--whatever is comfortable. Round trip it is about 2 miles. I have some t-shirts that were

made for that first walk and would be pleased to share them. The team is Joggers for Julian and the shirts

are red--his favorite color. Wear red if you can! If you would like to know more about Julian's story,

there is information at www.joggersforjulian.com.

So, no formal sign-ups--just come for a walk, a visit to the park along the way and just appreciate the day

that God makes.

Dear Trinity Church Family,

Summer is the time for family vacations. That is a good thing.

We all need time off to “recharge our batteries”.

As we all know, our household expenses do not go on vacation

when we do. The mortgage or rent still needs to be paid. Same for

taxes, electricity, groceries and so on. And just as it is with our

households, so it is with the parish family expenses. The bills

keep coming even when we go on vacation.

So, I want to encourage everyone to do what our family does. We pay our tithe in advance before we go

on vacation. In this way, the parish expenses can be paid and we don’t need to “catch up” in the

fall. We are a little behind on pledges at this time. So we are asking you to please help us keep current

in our bills and mission support commitments by keeping current on your pledge during the summer.

JUNE 12, 2016 YOUTH GROUP NERF WAR

It is easy during school summer vacation to also take a Sunday School summer vacation but don’t

fall into that trap! It is important to remember that our Christian Faith requires that we recommit

ourselves every day to study, prayer, and walking with Jesus. The routines of going to church on

Sunday, seeing friends at Sunday school, and then going back out into the world, refreshed and

focused on loving Jesus will actually help your children! It helps throughout the summer and

especially, when it comes time to get ready for school again. It will also show your children that

you think following Jesus is a priority.

Remember, the things you establish as a priorities in your families lives, are the things which

your children are more like to see as a priority throughout their teen and adult lives. What

do you want your children to focus on when they are older?

hang out at the park until 3ish and be back at church by 4.

JULY July 3rd – Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

Galatians 6:2-3…The Message (MSG)……Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly

restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the

day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete

Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.

No maturing Christian can ever say, “I don’t need the church,” because Jesus tells us that we all have work to

do in the church…..we must fulfill our role as part of the body. We cannot carry the burdens of those we never

interact with. Therefore, we must continue to participate in the work, fellowship, and worship of the church

….freely giving of ourselves just as Christ has given Himself to us.

Lord Jesus…Help us to be always there for each other with love and compassion. You did not create us to

walk alone…but to lean on each other. Help us to be faithful to You and to the Body of Christ. In Your

Name we pray………Amen

July 12th – Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 1:10…..(NASB)………so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him

in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

What does it mean to walk worthy of Christ’s name? It means that our conversations, conducts, and characters

are consistent with the person of Jesus Christ…we live in a manner that represents Him with honor. When

people meet you, they see His likeness and are drawn to Him. This can only be accomplished if you allow

Jesus to live in and through you.

Lord, our lives are filled with both darkness and light, sin and grace. So help us respond as we should in

prayer…both complaining and praising, both lamenting and trusting….but sweetened with the knowledge

that ultimately all will end in joy and glory. Amen.

July 17th – Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 1:26-27 (TLB)……. He has kept this secret for centuries and generations past, but now at

last it has pleased him to tell it to those who love him and live for him, and the riches and glory of his

plan are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ in your hearts is your only hope of glory.

In Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came upon chosen men and women of God to enable them to

accomplish His will. But no one ever imagined that He would actually take up residence in believers as He

does today.

Heavenly Father, it is so amazing to know that at any time we can reach out and ask for Your comfort and

find ourselves wrapped in the love that will not let go. Thank you in Your Son’s name we pray…

June 24th – Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 2:8-10 The Message …….Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and

intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to

anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty

superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him,

so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to

realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that

fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything.

The Litany of Reconciliation

The Litany of reconciliation is an acknowledgement of our need for forgiveness. It is based

on the seven deadly sins and uses the refrain first scratched on the wall behind the altar

of the ruined cathedral -“Father forgive”.

It is used each week day at 12:00 noon in Coventry Cathedral.

Being part of the Community of the Cross of Nails involves a commitment to reflect

upon these sins and our need for forgiveness and to praying the litany on a regular basis.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class, Father forgive.

The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own. Father forgive.

The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth. Father forgive.

Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others. Father forgive.

Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee. Father forgive.

The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children. Father forgive.

The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God. Father forgive.

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

As we are part of the Community of the Cross of Nails,

at a time so difficult for our country in so many ways let us not forget:

Paul warned the Colossians to guard themselves against the empty, deceptive philosophies that were based on

limited human reasoning. It may be impossible for us to comprehend how Jesus could be totally human and

totally divine at the same time. But that is the clear teaching of Scripture, and we must accept it….even if we

do not understand it. Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

Lord Jesus, When you decided to come and walk among us, you showed us your gentle and humble heart

and the great love you have for us. We are so ever grateful that You don’t make us guess who you are but

that you speak directly to us thru Your sweet and life-giving Word. Thank you Lord…Amen

July 31st – Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 3:2 The Message (MSG) He Is Your Life - So if you’re serious about living this new

resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle

along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what

is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.

It tells us to “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Transformation is

God’s goal for us, and we cooperate with His plan of spiritual metamorphosis when we train our minds to

dwell on the things of God rather than on the things of the flesh.

Lord, help me remember that my salvation in Christ is complete…so the great work is already done,

the great debt already paid, the great disease already healed. That enables me to take on all lesser tasks

and challenges with confidence and joy. I put myself in Your hands…work through me. Amen.
