    QUESTION 1

    (a) Fermentation process occurs when there is low amount of oxygen for organisms to survive.

    (i) Before barley can be fermented, starch will be hydrolysed into disaccharides which will

    be further hydrolysed to glucose.

    Write a balanced chemical equation for hydrolysis of a disaccharide to glucose.

    (ii) Glucose will undergo fermentation into ethanol with the help of yeast.

    (1) State the number of mol of ethanol produced from one mol of glucose.
