India coffee house a small building for anexpensive restaurant outside d main busstop in thiruvananthapuram, shows howfree he was from pre-conceived ideas, aswell as any fear from apparentstrangeness of his own solutions. Here thedining area is a curving ramp that risesabout two floors and winds tightly about afunctional service core housing the pantryand stores. Built in seats and tables hug
the curving outer jali wall, whoseperforations throw a playful pattern oflight on the spiraling floor while lending atapestry like feel to the wall when viewedfrom outside.

LOYOLA CHAPEL AND AUDITORIUM
Loyola Chapel and Auditorium built in
1971 and located inSreekaryam,Kerala,India has a high schooland post graduate school campus, bothsharing a common chapel andauditorium. It was here that Baker's skillsof cost reduction met their greateschallenge as it required a seating capacityof one thousand. Inorder to increase thelateral strength of the high brick wall, without the introduction of steel orconcrete, Baker devised a wide cavitydouble-wall with cross-bracing brick. TheHamlet's Inner Courtyard has thesignificant Baker feature which is irregular,pyramid-like structures on roofs, with oneside left open and tilting into the wind.Baker's designs invariably have traditionalIndian sloping roofs and terracottaMangalore tile shingling with gables andvents allowing rising hot air to escape.

CENTER OF DEVOLOPMENT STUDIES
The Centre for Development Studies (CDS) in
Thiruvananthapuram , the project that secured Bakersreputation in the 1970s, is built using his innovativesystem of cavity walls in un-plastered brick, reinforcedconcrete filler slabs (where recycled clay tiles replaced afair bit of the concrete), and brick jalis (patterns ofperforation) instead of expensive windows. The buildingsare sited carefully and laid out at different levels on asloping site to minimize excavation and earth filling. Aselsewhere, Baker keeps out the rain, lets in the breezeand modulates daylight by controlling openings, introducing jalis, providing roof overhangs, andwrapping internal spaces around intimate courtyards. These same functional devices also form the uniquevisual identity of his buildings. In this early project,Bakers capacity to combine social consciousness andexpressive freedom in a witty and vivid manner is alreadyclearly evident.
