Elements of Strategic Thinking

Todays class -> observation: Notes

Queues are a phenomenom - ‘if you see a long queue outside a restaurant it makes you think that restuarant mjst be good”

Creating an atmosphere -> the lights they at the wet markets make the meat look fresher and tender.

The first lesson we played “i am a camera” where me and my class friend CKY had a role to play where I was the camera and everytime he tapped my shouler i would have to open my eyes and take a photograph then close my eyes again, I tried to remember all I saw but it was actually rather difficult.

Here was the worksheet outcome...

Brief Thoughts & Ideas (First stage)

Ideas of what i could do/use?

The Problem.

Hong Kong does not have this culture

Idea 1: Pop up Interactive book Idea 2: An Illustrated map Game

- Treehouse Building- Tree Climbing- Making mud pie- Picking plums and apples- Collecting kaves- Hop scotch on the patio- Colouring books- Water fights w/ hose pipes

- It could be a set of poster instructions (silkscreened) BIG instructions to a small book- Illustration - city of tree-houses- Using hong kong fruit to make houses out of.

- an illustrated book- a book- a map- a big game on the floor- puzzle to get to the book (in the street)

Press out pieces of wood and in-structions

The best places to tree Climb in Hong Kong for example, all on a puzzle map in a park area

WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS TOY/GAME

WHY DO PEOPLE DISLIKE THIS TOY/GAME

Why do people like this Toy/Game?

- Brings Imagination - can teach you not only to use your creative side but to learn the cautions of play- it is different for boys to girls play; this shows it can be used for many types of play between kids

eg. boys will read there comics and try climb to the next levelseg. girls will have sleep overs and have tea partys- it brings children in to the outdoors-

Why do people dislike this Toy/Game?

- Dangerous- brings worry to parents- the weather can affect your play time and activities- Afriad of heights- more for people with land/an area to build(western culture)- Hong Kong children prefer electronical games, in-side activities- not enough space or parks for this activity to be enjoyable- as it is outdoors it is too hot to play outside some days- it is never a real tree because there is not enough space for an oak tree in Hong Kong parks, as they are too compact with play areas.

Safer security in parks for adults to not need to attend all play times. Security guard or CCTV? Introduce a new play time program.

How to provide a service by introducing an Indoor Centre with a play ground just like outside? Small swipe cards to enter so security knows you are a member of the playgroup. A jungle Jim? Fitness centre for children? Will there be a responsible adult around to take the 4-9 years child to the playground? How will the child get there? Feel safe?

It is proven that a mobile, at a young age is as bad as passive smok-ing. Is there another way to tackle this issue and keep your childs safety at hand?

Could there be an App? In which mothers and children can use to keep upto date on there childs weekly schedule. Or a social network platform? A chip and pin, that allows online access to your parents where-abouts? Incase of emergency prehaps.

Set timetabled days that you play for an hour. Play is good for your creative mind, Children need to have this time to develop there minds. An App that tests your workload and time management?

Page 15: TreeTop Hotel Design

Youth of hong kong can experience a differentcultural activities. There is lack of other cultrual experi-ence at this user age group.

The parents of the children have to be involved in the process as they hold respon-siblity for there child. Finding a place to is the problem, lack of space in the city.

Children can find a way to relieve pressure from school work and meet new friends through after school activities.

Children have to WANT to play in the new product in order to experience a differ-ent cultures playing time.

We could not only bring the visual outcome to Hong Kong. But all 5 senses, the experience I once had with this Product/game/toy.

CONDUCTED INTERVIEWSFOR TARGET USER GROUP

Yan Laap Memorial Primary SchoolP4 & P5 students

One of my friends works as a primary school teacher at the Yan Laap Memorial Primary School and teachs P4 and P5 children. So for me, this is very lucky, as my target user’s are all around this age group.I sent a small questionarre to my friend and asked her to let her class have a quick browse at the questions and just put a tick or a cross if they understood or not. Whilst doing this after they had all answered question number (1) I showed them an image of a Tree House. The results were rather interesting...

Questions Asked:

1. Does it make you excited at the thought of climbing trees?

2. Does anybody know what a treehouse looks like or even is?

3. Does anybody here have a garden to play in at home?

4. If there was a tree house in Hong Kong do you think it would be fun to play in?

A fold-up bedroom/treebed, a hostel, a place to play games, an education.

the constuction of the treehouse, inside and out

Thread, bedsheets, metal, lanterns, weaves of the twigs/tree leaves, string, wood, glass

SUSTAINABLE LIVING OR ENVIRONMENTS

A homely feel still, so the user group can feel comfortable in the environment. The problem being space in the home, why not take it outdoors, to the countryside?

Foldup bed idea, up-stairs is somewhere to play then you can pack it all up and go to sleep

Sai Kung, New territo-ries, HK countryside boasts great outdoor activities and SPACE!

HK children seem to not be involved in outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing etc. Build a treehouse in the hiking routes for overnight stays? Bring the family together by organised adven-ture trails through the treetops.

Recombine its parts purposes?

What is the service of this tree house?

What materials could be com-bined?

{ADAPT}Giving a feel of the out-doors environments by sounds and objects

A place to relax, place to study, place to sleep, library, Hold childrens parties, Star gazing. A tree house of imagina-tion

Hong Kong children don’t seen very exposed to the countryside. BRING NATURES BEAUTY IN TO THE CITY OR TAKE THE KIDS TO THE COUN-TRYSIDE. Give them a wildlife experience.

A retreat treehouse. Brings you imagination and creativity. Interac-tion

Using objects as furni-ture, a wheel barrow as a seat in the treehouse

the visual or purpose/content.

SPACE. With the em-phasis on “space” being the problem, more of it could be wonderful. Find a location in Hong Kong that boasts more space and tranquility.

Exaggerate the contents within the treehouse, COMFORT, homely, a place to relax, learn, inspire and create and most of all, a place to let your imagination go wild...

make the ladder longer and REALLY WIDE, so 5 people could climb all at once.

Graphically designed posters telling state-ments, facts about HK Hiking and country-side? All across Hong Kong...

How can we make the entry to the tree-house different. Could these designed posters illustrate the concep-tual Idea I’m aiming towards.

A circular form of treehouses facing one another. Have walky talkies to locate your friends location in the other tree top... excit-ing stuff!

What could be made higher, big-ger or stronger?

What can be exaggerated?

What can be magnified/made larger?

{PutToOtherUses}30+ relief hub, a retreat, holiday home, place to relax, adventure park, jungle jim, learning about the wildlife, busi-ness’ for example, cafes, rest stops/snack store, bird watching

Does it have to be a physical object?

What is my purpose? To bring some western cul-tural activities to Hong Kong. To welcome the outdoor activities in to HK childrens routines and excite them with other locations of the city. How can i show this in my treehouse?

Rename the treehouse, create the atmosphere a child expects from this exciting adventure in the treetops. In the advertising designs, Brin excitment in the illustrattions, a sense of reality to this concept.

You live in a house in the trees for a few days, there is maps of trials to walk around the area, beachs, mountains, lakes, treetop walks, surfing, old derelict buildings. A walking tour. Places to do art crafts. Learn about the wildlife

student hub, a birth-day getaway, romantic spot, just for sightsee-ing the views of hong kong(depending on its location) a design studio, place to work and grasp your ideas/projects.

could it be turned on its side for easier ac-cess?

could it surround the tree, go inside and through aswell as up and combine all ele-ments of its uses and sturcture to absorb the nature around it

What can it be used for other than those originally intended?

If I knew nothing about it, would I be able to figure out the pur-pose of this Idea?

If its modified are there other possible uses?

Page 34: TreeTop Hotel Design
Page 35: TreeTop Hotel Design

{ELIMINATE or minify}To bring a different cul-tural feel/culture. Relax, imagination, creativity

Take it apart...build it yourself(book, pop out cards that you have to redesign)

Can we eliminate some and it still have func-tion?

postcards = advertis-ing Ideas. “Make you think” cards.“Would you like this in your city?”

If it was made smaller, it could be minute, and there is just headphone leading from certain areas, giving you the feeling of the 5 senses, metioned earlier in the Scamper

What is its function?

What if it was made smaller. How could it function?

Page 36: TreeTop Hotel Design
Page 37: TreeTop Hotel Design

{REVE SE}Could it be on the ground?

Indoor or outdoor only daylight only in the dark only the ladder starts at the top and you work your way down

Orderly or unorderly. using a conveyer belt as a way of working.Use the old fashioned way of sending bricks and wood up to a treehouse level with a bucket and rope.

Attach a cafe to the treehouse so when you order your have to pull the rope in order to get your food, or your food is delivered in a bucket that you collect at the bottom. Served in wheel barrow platesa and cutlery.

in a circular form seperate areas, for seperate uses.

pick it apart, ladder acts as something else

What other arrangement might be better?

Patterns, Layouts, Sequences?

Just Imagine...

Page 41: TreeTop Hotel Design

Although Hong Kong is regarded as one of the world’s great cities, out of the total 1,092 km² of land, about three-quarters is countryside. Scenically, Hong Kong has a great deal to offer - a landscape rising from sandy beaches and rocky foreshores to heights of almost 1,000 metres, woodlands and mountain ranges cov-ered by open grassland and a variety of sce-nic vistas rarely, if ever, matched in so small a territorial unit. Most of the Hong Kong’s parks have over 1,000 species of plants.

Design concept

My Idea concept is to bring an aspect of the Western Culture to Hong Kong. The focus being Treehouses. Treehouses that allow children to play, learn, gain ex-perience and explore new environments.

With youth you have energy, curiousity and excitement. As a westerner, we have the environment around us that allows us to have forests, woods and large gardens to explore and play in as children. Imagine a Treehouse Adventure Park located in Sai Kung East. You can have a family stay for the whole week-end, introduce your children to wildlife and outdoor activities, hiking routes, beachs, the ‘green’ issues and all the beauty of the countryside that the Hong Kong City doesn’t always allow us to see from all the high rise and rushed lifestyle. See it as a peaceful or fun filled get away from the city.

Reflection

From this project I have realised how important it is to know your user before commencing with the main important parts of the Project. For example, without the research or interviews I conducted it would of be a game of guessing which audience I was aiming towards without ap-propriate proof. Also I have come to realise how although it is difficult for me to work in a different process towards a brief, it has made me learn different techniques and ways of thinking strategically. I thoroughly en-joyed this brief after a hesitation towards this way of working at the very beginning.
