Coniferous trees are usually defined as any tree that produces a cone. Common coniferous trees are pines, firs, hemlocks, and spruces. Shrubs can also be considered coniferous, and they are usually a version of the above trees, but in shrub form. Coniferous trees are also referred to as softwood trees. This is because their wood is not as durable as hardwoods, such as maple, oak, and birch. Hardwoods are also deciduous while coniferous trees are usually, but not always, evergreen. An example of a deciduous coniferous tree is the european larch. It has needles, but drops them every fall.
