WOMANKIND FAMILY ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVE (WOKFEI) REPORT OF OUR
ACTIVITIES TO MARK 2013 ENVIROMENTAL DAY TERMED
INCULCATING TREE PLANTING ATTITUDE IN CHILDREN
Our organization, WOMANKIND FAMILIY ENHANCEMENT INITIATIVE (WOKFEI), a
non-governmental organization engage is impacting people, especially women and children,
for sustainable livelihood through promotion of behavioural change.
Biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, is essential to sustaining the living networks and
systems that provide us all with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital services our lives
depend on.
Human activity is causing the diversity of life on Earth to be lost at a greatly accelerated rate.
These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we relyon every day. This has led to what is being referred to as
CLIMATE CHANGE.
Climate change refers to changes experienced in the average
weather in a particular region. The world over has been
experiencing devastating effect of adverse weather conditions
and Kwara State, Nigeria is not left out. Rainstorms,
flooding, rise in temperature and even hailstones have been
experienced in the last few years in the state.
It will therefore be beneficial to all to design effectiveadaptation and/ or mitigation strategies THAT WILL
BENEFIT PRESENT AND FUTURE generations.
We at WOKFEI consider reforestation as one of the most
viable climate change mitigation options for the world. We
want to inculcate the attitude of green environment in
children by involving school children in tree planting. This
helps create cool environment in their schools for conducive
learning, increases biodiversity and, most importantly,
provides an excellent learning resource. - planting the trees,
watching them grow, seeing how wildlife is encouraged, charting the changing seasons and weather. This will
hopefully make them love green environment.
We therefore decided to mark 2013 Enviromental day by
working with children to plant trees in their school
compound. We are also introducing competition. At the onset
of the next raining season, the trees will be measured and
schools that perform well will receive prizes.
1 .33 schools in Oyun Local Government Area (LGA) of
Kwara State were selected for tree planting activities

capacity of One teacher and 2 community facilitators selected from each school. Community
facilitators were involved for the purpose of continuity if and when trained teachers are
transferred out of the school. 99 participants were trained.
3. The training topics include
What is climate change; How does climate change affect us negatively,
How can we mitigate climate change?
Importance of trees in our environment; Sources of tree seedlings in Kwara State (government and private); How to plant tree seedling; How to nurture growing trees
4. A variety of methods were used in conducting the training. These include
brainstorming, role plays, drawing and practical of tree planting was conducted.
5. We contacted LEVENTIS FOUNDATION NIGERIA to solicit for support. Theypromptly responded by supplying us with 250 seedlings of Moringa tree. According to LFN,
they chose to give us a tree that can produce economic harvest in less than 6 months. This is
to generate more interest in tree planting from pupils, teachers and parents. The trees were
shared among the 33 schools.
6. WOKFEI officials went round the schools to flag off and monitor the tree planting
exercise by the pupils.
7. PRIZE GIVING.
Pupils were informed that prizes will be given for performance and the criteria were spelt out
thus: At the onset of the next raining season, WOKFEI officials will go round the schools to
measure the growth of the trees planted in each school. Each of the schools that have
surviving trees will be given presents and the schools with the best and tallest trees will be
given choice prizes.
8. AREAS OF SUPPORT STILL NEEDED
We sought the opinion of the pupils on what items they would want as prizes if they take
good care of the trees. Items they mentioned include, Lawn mower to maintain the school
football field; spraying pump and weed killers to control bush around the school premises;
computer; generator; football; merry go round play equipment.
We need your support to get these prize items. Please help us to make good our promises and
further deepen the love of tree planting in these children. Join us to catch them young.
Thanks in anticipation of your consideration and action
