Implementing TravelWhiz Case study: AbleyTo support the Abley office moving back into central Christchurch after the 2010/11 earthquakes, we implemented a comprehensive travel plan to encourage staff to make active travel choices when travelling to the new office.

TravelWhiz was launched by conducting a staff travel survey to better understand current and intended modes of travel to the new office, so a personalised journey plan could be created. The journey plans utilised our in-house safe cycle routing tool, which considers not only speed but also the safety of a particular route. The plans also included information on calories burned when walking or cycling to work, offer of a free Christchurch bus Metrocard, information on how to

use the carpark booking system, and a map showing alternative long-term parking areas within walking distance to the office.

A large secure cycle storage area was constructed in the basement of the new office building. In addition, Abley have committed to providing fresh towels, toiletries, showers and ample changing rooms. Staff members are able to use their annual wellness package allowance to purchase bicycle lights and high visibility backpack covers are available. A guaranteed ride home policy provides a safety net – the company will pay for a ride home if a staff member experiences an unexpected event or emergency.

Each year the social club organise a bike ride to a local park for a picnic

lunch, to support and encourage staff who do not currently cycle. Abley have two branded bikes and helmets which can be used by staff to travel for work meetings or to run errands during the day.

Ongoing travel surveys of Christchurch staff indicate that the proportion of staff travelling actively (walking, cycling and using public transport) is being sustained at about 60%.

Comparing the modes with other CBD commuters, Abley Christchurch employees emit approximately half the greenhouse gases (GHG’s) of other Christchurch commuters, whilst Abley Auckland employees emit less than one fifth of the GHGs of other Auckland commuters travelling into the CBD.
