    GARDEN TIPS with George

In medieval times it was believed thatonly a pregnant woman or a witch couldsuccessfully grow parsley from seed.Parsley is the most useful herb not only forits fine flavour in cooking but a garnishingherb and natural breath freshener.

Being a native of the Mediterraneanregion, southern and central Europe it isno wonder that it is used in Italian cuisineso generously. In Roman times it wasused as a table decoration for banquetguests to snack on to reduce intoxication.

The French chefs used a bouquet garniof parsley, sage, lemon thyme or thyme, oregano, chives and a bay leaf in theirstews and casseroles to enhance theflavour of the meat and vegetables.

Medicinally it is rich in vitamin C andiron as well as other minerals and containschlorophyll which is an antiseptic. Parsleyis a strong diuretic that treats urinaryinfections as well as fluid retention.

Flat leaf or Italian parsley is easilygrown from seed or from seedlingsbought from a nursery and a few plants inthe veggie garden are very handy. Curlyleaf parsley is also very decorative andmay be grown as an edging plant in theflower garden. It is also easily grown fromseed in a seed tray or a small pot andtransplanted when the plants are 50mmtall.

Happy gardening everyone, ‘til nexttime. Merry Christmas, George

    From My DeskIan Scandrett

Folks,On a regular basis Council conducts

community research. It is sampled across allparts of the shire, all age groups and isreferenced to the latest census. The latestresearch confirms some of my concerns andshould be a wake-up alert for Council.

Since the last sample research there wasa decline in satisfaction across 5 of the 39services and facilities provided by Council.

Here are the 5 results with my personalobservations re your local area in brackets:1. Encouraging Recycling (2nd motion in

    2017 by Scandrett/Whipper to cost awaste station/extra kerbside waste —failed 8/11/2017 - Vote 2:7l).

    2. Encouraging Waste Reduction Initiatives(see above, however a costing of a greenwaste transfer station did proceed —Note, just a costing).

    3. Provision & Maintenance of SwimmingPools (reaction to breakdown ofMittagong, works underway).

    4. Local Traffic Management (additionalwork on Wilson Drive now scheduled).

    5. Availability of Car Parking in Town &Village Centres (additional Shopperparking coming to Bowral in Wattle Lane, delivered Church Ave carpark). You might wonder why I am publishing

poor news — it is to be transparent and showthat there is an even bigger room forimprovement.

I will continue to advocate for solutions tothese, especially for the Northern Villages.

Always happy to be contacted:Email: [email protected] Ian Scandrett, Deputy MayorChair - Economic Development & Tourism
