Making learning work

G1944

Choices – more than just GCSEs! If you are a year 9 student and thinking about what options there are in years 10 and 11, then this booklet might have something for you. This prospectus gives you the chance to see what other options may be available for you to learn outside of your home school. It details a number of vocational and other options that you could take in years 10 and 11. The courses in this booklet offer you the chance to study a new subject somewhere different and perhaps using different learning styles.

How will my work be marked?Assessment is not just based on exams. You may be observed, have to produce a portfolio of work and possibly take tests/exams.

What are the courses worth? The courses in this prospectus will lead to nation-ally recognised qualifications and can be equated to GCSEs. Each course has further information included in this booklet.

How do I show interest in taking one of these courses?

Talk to your tutor in school, and your parents/carers about your plans.

If, after taking advice, you decide the course is for you, then complete the application form (available in school) and hand it back to your tutor.

Things to remember: There are limited numbers of places.

Get help completing your application form.

Places on the course are dependent on you having a good tutor or school report.

Make sure you are applying for courses at the correct level for you. (Your tutor will help you here if you are not sure.)

High standards of behaviour are expected on all courses, plus a positive and mature attitude towards learning.

Your place on a course will only be confirmed after an interview at school or college. This interview will take into account your prior achievements and evidence of your commitment to undertake the course of study.

What can I expect when I go? You will be treated like an adult and will be

expected to act appropriately in your new environment.

You will be able to use all the facilities which your provider has to offer.

You will need to make sure that all assignment work is completed on time.

Where can these courses take me? You can follow a programme that can lead you

onto a wide range of different courses post 16 or lead to further training/employment.
