Questions :

Doc 1. 1) Explain the paratext (people involved, role / identity / nature of the document and why)2) Two temporalities are mentioned in the text. Find them and explain what they refer to. 3) A certain historical context is mentioned. Find more details about it. Explain what war is

referred to, what happened to the President of the United States at that time (go and find specific info about him. His name / party / his career / his fights / his death)

4) Spot the mistakes. What are they a sign of? What do they tell about Charlie? Why do you think they have been left untouched?

5) Spot the things that he knows / remembers and the things that he doesn’t know or doesn’t remember or were hidden from him. What information do we have about his family. What other details would you have liked to get?

6) Is there a stark contrast between his life when he was a former slave and his life as a free man? give reasons to justify your answer.

1) What is this document? When does it date from? Where is it? What do you know about this state at that time?

2) What information do we have about the woman? What information don’t we have? What do you think about the price? (compare with doc 3) Think about the ways she could be « used ».

3) What does it reveal about the process of acquiring slaves.

testimonies, receipts and traces of the ante-bellum period?
