Travel Passes:Are available for the Skytrain and the metro/

underground/subway. Good value is the Skytrain’s threeday pass for under 300 baht this gives unlimited travelfor the whole three days. Other options are 10, 15 or 30trip tickets the cost includes a 40 baht refundable depositon the ticket but the trips must be made within one monthof purchase. Top-up tickets are also available on the metroand Skytrain.

Trains:Bangkok has two excellent and modern urban train

systems: the Skytrain and its underground sister the metro. Both of them serve the business and entertainment areasof the city and the Skytrain is currently undergoing anextension to the opposite bank of the Chao Phraya Riverand further along the Sukhumvit line past On Nut. Themetro also serves more residential, commercial andindustrial areas than the Skytrain. Compared to Westerncities both the metro and the Skytrain are very good valuefor money.

There is a system of urban railways run by the StateRailways of Thailand but it is unlikely that these will beof much use to many foreigners in Bangkok. But againthe fares are remarkably cheap.

One of the most relaxing and fun ways of gettingabout Bangkok is to use either the River Express or canaltaxi boats. The River Express boats have a limited reachtravelling only between Wat Ratchasingkhon in the southof Bangkok to Nonthaburi in the north. It is a fun butcrowded way of travelling the city, the service starts at6am and finishes at 7.30pm between these hours they arevery frequent travelling at ten minute intervals. Some ofthe boats are express boats that run only during peak hoursand so do not stop at each pier, these are easily

distinguished by the orange, red or yellow flags beingflown. Again the fare is remarkably cheap starting at 10baht with a maximum fare for the whole journey of 25baht.

Canal Taxis will zip you around Bangkok’s manycanals the trips are quick and the stops are usually underor near to bridges. The fares are also remarkably cheap. The canal taxis are an interesting way to get to seeBangkok and to beat its notorious traffic congestion.Longtail boats are another option although moreexpensive than the canal taxis they provide a quicker routearound Bangkok and Thonburi’s narrower waterways.

Buses:Amongst this melee is a wide choice of available

transport. One thing to be aware of is that most buses inBangkok have their destinations written only in Thai butroute numbers are prominently displayed. Bus route mapsare available to buy at 7-eleven, family mart, Bookazine,Asia Books and many other shops.

The first thing you will notice about Bangkok’s busesis that they come in many different colours. This is mainlyto indicate whether they are air conditioned or not, manyof the buses are also very old. At peak times during themorning and evening rush hours they get very full withstanding room often only available.

Taxis:To say that taxis in Bangkok are plentiful is an

understatement; they whiz around the street in search ofcustomers like busy bees in search of honey. There isjust one problem at peak traffic times and when congestionis bad you they are vulnerable to the whims of the trafficflow and the traffic police.

Getting AroundBangkok’s weather and infernal traffic conditions will determine how

you travel around the city, by foot or one of the many forms of public transportthat are available.

There is no doubt that for the first time visitor Bangkok smacks you inthe face and makes you take notice of its organised chaos. You may beoverwhelmed by the sheer volume of traffic in this frenetic city where cars, motorcycles, trucks, tuk tuks, taxis, buses and it seems every other form oftransport competes for space.

But first a little about Thai addresses; to the new-comer it can be difficultworking out addresses, a thanon is a street or road, a soi is a street running offa thanon (although some sois are big enough to be called thanons and someare known as both), and a trawk is an alleyway. So Soi 3 Thanon Silom is thethird soi to lead off Silom Road, but this soi is more like a wide boulevardand is also known as Soi Convent, Thanon Convent or even Convent Road. This soi can be shortened to Silom Soi 3 and people will know where youwant to go.

Bangkok is about the only city in Thailand that hasan organised taxi system and the flag-down fare has notchanged in years it is a very reasonable 35 baht for 2kilometres. Trips between 2 and 12 kilometre add an extra4.5 baht per kilometre, when stationary the tariff is1.25baht per minute. All tolls are paid by the passenger. There is no need to bargain but be sure the meter is runningif not insist that it or get out. Be careful of being shortchanged or the notorious excuse ‘meter not working’.

Tuk Tuks:These little three-wheelers are best kept for very short

trips, they are open to the elements and best avoidedduring the day time when buses and trucks are belchingtoxic fumes and during the rainy season when you arelikely to get wet. You have to bargain for the price andthey can be as expensive or more so than metered taxis, tuk tuks really should only be used as a novelty and notrelied on for longer trips. For a short trip 40 baht is areasonable price.

Motorcycle Taxis:These are guaranteed to speed you through Bangkok’

s congested traffic at any time of day, but they are bestleft for desperate situations as the ride can sometimes bestbe described as ‘white-knuckle’. Fares for short trips areabout 20 baht.

By Rail:The State Railways of Thailand are easily the best

way to get around and see the country - train travel inThailand is comfortable, safe, cheap, environmentallyfriendly, and unlike flying, it’s a genuine Thai experiencethat makes the journeys as much part of your trip as thedestinations... In fact, Thailand has one of the best metre-gauge rail systems in the world.

Most trains use Bangkok’s main Hualamphongstation in the city centre, although trains to Kanchanaburileave from Bangkok Thonburi station (also known asBangkok Noi) across the river in the West of the city. However, to ease congestion, State Railways of Thailandintend to move long-distance services out to a newterminal at Bang Sue junction station, 7km North ofHualamphong station, and at some point all long-distancetrains will start from there instead of Hualamphong.Suburban and short-distance trains will continue to runfrom Hualamphong, linking it to Bang Sue.

Thai trains have three classes: first, second and third.First class only exists as modern air-conditioned sleeping-cars on overnight trains. Second class comes in seat andsleeper versions, in air-conditioned and non-air-convarieties, and is very comfortable especially on sleepertrains and the air-conditioned express railcars. Even thirdclass is surprisingly clean and acceptable by Europeanstandards, and is an enjoyable way to travel for manyshorter trips.

1st class sleepersThese are modern and air-conditioned, with lockable

two berth compartments with washbasin. Clean bedding,

soap and towels are provided. The toilet at the end of thecar even has a shower (cold water, but very welcome). Those passengers who are travelling alone may have toshare with another passenger of the same sex unless theyto pay for sole occupancy. The berths convert to a sofafor evening & morning use. A very good choice if youwant space and privacy, although second class sleepersare perfectly adequate for most people.

Second class sleepersMost western visitors are quite happy using second

class sleepers, which are comfortable, safe, and great fun.Berths are not in compartments, but are arranged ‘openplan’ along the coach wall either side of a central aisle.During the evening and morning part of the journey, pairsof seats face each other on each side of the aisle.

At night, each pair of seats pulls together to form thebottom bunk and an upper bunk folds out from the wall. The attendant will make up your bunk with a propermattress and fresh clean bedding, and will hook up thecurtains which are provided for each bunk to give youprivacy.

Second class sleepers come in both air-conditionedand non-air-conditioned varieties. The fare for an upperberth is a fraction cheaper, but the upper bunks tend to benarrower. There’s plenty of luggage room.

Second class seats - air-conditioned express railcarsThe express railcar is an excellent option for daytime

travel on routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai andBangkok to Hua Hin & Surat Thani. These modern air-conditioned railcars have comfortable second classreclining seats. There is a hostess service of light mealsand refreshments included in the fare. Relax and enjoythe journey as the scenery rolls by.

Second class seats - ordinary trainsThese are a pleasant and comfortable way to travel

for long-distance daytime journeys, although slower thanthe express railcars. There are both air-conditioned andnon-air-con varieties. The advantage of the non-air-concoaches is the open windows and unrestricted views, abreeze wafting in as the train clickety-clacks through theThai countryside.

Third class seats - ordinary & local trainsIn spite of its name, third class is a perfectly good

option for short trips such as Bangkok to Kanchanaburior Ayutthaya, as it’s generally clean, not usually crowdedoutside the commuter peaks, unbelievably cheap, andsitting next to an open window as the train clickety-clacksthrough the countryside is a very pleasant experience. Butchoose second class long trips such as Bangkok to NongKhai or Chiang Mai. Third class may have wooden orpadded seats, is normally non-air-con, but air-con thirdclass exists on a few long distance routes.

How to buy tickets - at the stationReservations are computerised, and the booking

office at any main station can reserve seats or berths forany journey in Thailand. Your ticket will have the traintime and your seat or berth number printed on it.Bangkok’s Hualamphong Station has a well-organisedreservation office, open daily 08:00-16:00. From the mainentrance, walk towards the platforms, and the reservationoffice is tucked away on the extreme right, more or lesslevel with the entrance to the platforms. There’s a queuingsystem: when you enter, take a numbered ticket from themachine and wait until your number appears on thedisplay, directing you to a particular reservation counter. The staff are friendly and helpful.

How quickly do trains get fully booked?People often ask, ‘how difficult is it to get a

reservation if I go to the station on the day of travel?’Generally, it’s not too difficult to find seats or berthsavailable if you book on the day of travel or perhaps theday before, but Thai trains do get fully booked from timeto time, especially at peak holiday periods

It is easy to check seat availability by going towww.railway.co.th and selecting ‘seat availability’. Tryentering tomorrow’s or the day after date. It will tell youhow many seats or berths are still available on specifictrains on that date.

Air travel:In the last few years Thailand and some other Asian

countries have liberalised their airways allowing low cost,no frills airlines to grow at a rapid pace. Now it is easierand cheaper to fly domestically and internationally usingboth full service airlines like THAI and Bangkok Airlinesand the low cost carriers of which there are many.Bangkok is ideally located as a central air hub giving easyflying access to all parts of the Kingdom and beyond.Few Thai destinations are more than an hour or 90 minutesflying time from Bangkok, and even regional destinationsare little more than three hours away.

The largest of the no frills airlines and the one withthe most destinations is Air Asia serves most of Thailand’s largest towns and cities from its base in Bangkok; italso has an extensive regional network servingdestinations like Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, HoChi Min City (Saigon), Hanoi, Bali.

Like all other low cost carries you have to be an earlybird to get the best deals but Air Asia has frequentpromotional deals to particular destinations with very lowcost seats. Fares are for a one way (single journey) onlyand a return ticket has to be purchased either at the sametime as an outward ticker or they may be purchased at alater date.

Nok Air is a subsidiary of THAI International andoperates a two class policy, the good news is that the firstclass is only an extra 500 baht on the standard price sowill not break the bank for that little extra comfort. Thefirst class seats are ex-THAI International business classand give more leg and arm room.

One-to-Go operates solely within the Kingdom andhas an extensive network of routes to the north and southof the country.

Tiger Air is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines andnow operates between Bangkok and Chiang Mai andSingapore. One way tickets from Bangkok to Singaporestart at under 2000 baht and frequent offers are available.

THAI International and Bangkok Airways operatefull service flights within Thailand and beyond. Eventhough their fares are more expensive than the low costairlines their offer the full service you would expectproviding meals, snacks and drinks as part of the service.

Suvaranbhumbi Airport:At present both domestic and regional flights use

Bangkok’s brand new airport Suvaranbhumbi(pronounced Soo Wa Na Boom). This is a brand-newairport opened only in September 2006 and while it looksvery impressive there have been some teething troublessince its opening. But these are being solved and theairport should be in tip-top condition as you read this.

Air travel is booming in Asia and a new and largerairport was a great priority for Bangkok and ThailandSuvaranbhumbi gives greater capacity to the increasingnumber of arrivals and departures and of operators.

The airport is world record-braking in two respects:firstly it has the largest and longest passenger terminaland secondly its air traffic control tower at 132.2 metres

245

Page 10: Transportationrez

246

is the world’s tallest and can handle up to 74 flights anhour.

Unlike the old Don Muang airport Suvaranbhumbihas both domestic and international gates in the oneterminal. The airport offers all the facilities you wouldexpect of an ultramodern international airport; shoppingopportunities galore with bargains to be had in all theduty free shopping outlets. Food is available for all tastesand pockets from MacDonald’s and other fast food outletsto fine cuisine in superb restaurants.

In its first phase it has been designed to accommodate45 million passenger each year, a second phase willincrease that number to 120 million passengers. To copewith this number the single terminal is nearly 500 metreslong and 11 metres wide with seven concourses. Five ofthe gates are capable of handling the new Airbus A380

There is a 5000 space car park right outside theterminal with another 1100 spaces at ground level and along term car park that can hold 4000 cars and 78 buses.

The Novotel Airport Hotel is a five star hotel situatedin the airport’s vicinity, again offering a full rangefacilities from small seminar and meeting rooms to fullrange of MICE services. The hotel has four restaurantsand a bar and its all day eating outlet The Square serves avariety of popular Thai and Western cuisine. In additionit has a 20-metre swimming pool that is surrounded by atropical garden, a fitness centre, spa facilities and beautysalon, shopping arcades and a babysitting service.

As the elevated railway link is expected to becompleted at the end of 2007 beginning of 2008 accessto the airport can only be made by bus, taxi or private.Frequent airport buses leave various points of centralBangkok frequently, and the BMT bus service has routesthat link with the airport also. The airport bus costs 150baht per journey and the scheduled service being cheaperbut is a longer journey time.

A taxi ride takes between 35 and 45 minutes and thefare from the centre of Bangkok should be in the regionof 400 baht. Taking a taxi from the airport involvescatching a free shuttle bus to the taxi waiting point about3 kilometres from the departure lounge. There is a 50baht surcharge when hiring a taxi from the airport.

Long Distance VIP Buses:Perhaps the cheapest way to travel around Thailand

is by long distance VIP buses. These buses run anextensive network of routes to all parts of Thailand. Thefares are offer good value for money with a typical longdistance trip costing about 600 baht one way.

The routes often directly connect Bangkok with otherregional towns and cities with buses departing for the mostpopular routes every hour. Long distance VIP buses areoften the only way to get to a remote area that is not servedby air or rail links.

There are three main long distance bus stations inBangkok Ekamai, Mor Chit. They serve different regionsof the country with Ekamai bus station serving the easternseaboard, Mor Chit the northern part of Thailand.

Car Hire:If you want to drive yourself you will need an

international drivers licence; car rental offices arenumerous in the city, both local and international car rentalcompanies offer excellent rates and service. They willhire both self drive or chauffeur driven cars.

Driving around the country is easy as all the directionsigns are written in Thai and English. Driving in Bangkokthough is a different matter with the many motor-cyclesvying for space discourages many foreigners from drivingin this congested city.

To hire a care you will need an international driverslicence, passport and your credit card. Check what theinsurance covers and if there is an excess to be paid inthe event of an accident. Also make sure that the rentalcharge includes unlimited mileage. Most companies willdeliver the car to your hotel or apartment, and will allowyou to pick up and leave the car at the airport.

Both the English language newspapers, The BangkokPost and The Nation have copious advertisements for carhire companies. There is plenty of choice so it may beworth your while spending some time shopping around, don’t ignore the local hire companies as they are asreliable and often cheaper than the major internationalhirers.

Thailand drives on the left side of the road.Getting around Bangkok and Thailand has become

more convenient, more comfortable and for air travelmuch more affordable in the last few years. What a goldenopportunity to visit Bangkok’s and Thailand’s manyfascinating cities and sites.
