TRANSPORTATION INDUCTION PROGRAM AT THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY & CHILDREN’S CENTER (3/10)
DEFINITION OF INDUCTION: The Transportation Induction Program at the Christian Family & Children’s Center is a process designed to help the new bus driver to get his training needed during the first year of his work at the Center as well as to help them develop personally and professionally during the first year of employment. The first year driver is assigned a peer-mentors who will help, each along with his supervisors, through the program. A primary mentor who has several years’ experience in the transportation department at the Center is assigned by the Head Driver and Transportation Director. PURPOSE OF INDUCTION: The purpose of the Induction Program at the Christian Family & Children’s Center is to promote excellence in professional driving skills and knowledge and to orient and train faculty in the philosophies and practices inherent at The Christian Family & Children’s Center. It is intended for first year teachers and for experienced drivers new to The Christian Family & Children’s Center. It is the mission of The Christian Family & Children’s Center to provide Christian Programs for the family. The role of the transportation department is to support the programs that provide those services, and to provide its services in distinctly Christian ways. The Induction Program is designed to help drivers learn and practice professional driving skills, learn the variety of skills needed to operate each vehicle in the Center’s transportation fleet, learn to manage students and other passengers and clients that are served by the Center in professional and Christ-like ways, create a good vehicle transportation atmosphere, and be a good role model in accordance with the mission statement of The Christian Family & Children’s Center. The Induction Program should also help drivers become adjusted to the Center and the various aspects of the Center's many ministries as well as the procedures needed for its day-to-day operations. It should aid drivers in learning the procedures and techniques of vehicle management, and help drivers develop a healthy relationship with students and fellow staff members. The Induction Program will work to instill in new drivers the values and philosophy of Christian ministry and facilitate a higher rate of success than for drivers who do not experience the benefits of the program.
2
AUTHORITY FOR INDUCTION: The authority for the Induction Program rests with the Center's Board of Directors. The clients of The Christian Family & Children’s Center expect excellence in their drivers, having entrusted their families to this Center because of its unique mission and philosophy. The Administration recognizes this mandate and seeks to provide drivers who are well qualified, and who fully implement the philosophies of The Christian Family & Children’s Center. The Administration at The Christian Family & Children’s Center does not hire drivers to do their own thing! Rather, the various personalities of the individual staff must be exhibited within the confines and overall direction of The Christian Family & Children’s Center's philosophy. Our Mission Statement at The Christian Family & Children’s Center is the foundation for all programs including the Induction Program. The induction plan shall reflect a mentor relationship between the first year driver and the induction team. RATIONALE: It is our belief that the early experiences of a beginning driver or a driver in a new assignment are critical to their development. Both attitude and driving style are likely to be established during the first year of driving. It is imperative that support and guidance be given to drivers as they are faced with new tasks, new students, new rules, and many other challenging situations during their first year of driving or their first year in a new assignment. These drivers need assistance with both philosophical understanding of the role of driving at the Center and development of specific driving that will meet the needs of the clients of the Center and the Transportation department goals. It is of particular importance that the philosophy, mission, and goals of The Christian Family & Children’s Center be transmitted to drivers who are new to the Christian ministry environment or new to the Center itself.
3
ASSESSMENT OF NEED FOR INDUCTION: New and first year drivers at The Christian Family & Children’s Center have special needs that must be addressed if drivers are to be successful in conforming to the Mission Statement of our center. In general, new drivers could be understood to need the following: ∙ Orientation to the institution ∙ Development and improvement of professional
driving skills ∙ student management techniques ∙ Personal and emotional support ∙ Advice on resources and material ∙ Information on Center policies ∙ Techniques of communication and information
transmission at the Center Given the above needs, the Induction Program at The Christian Family & Children’s Center will provide mentors for the first year drivers and drivers new to the Center. A mentor will be supplied to drivers enrolled in the Induction Program. A meeting place and time will be selected for regular support meetings between the inductee and his or her mentor. Forms will be supplied which will facilitate reporting and record keeping. Subjects of concern and projected plans to address these subjects are to be recorded during each meeting. DEFINITION OF AN INDUCTEE: An inductee is a beginning driver or a driver new to The Christian Family & Children’s Center, regardless of the amount of driving experience that they might have previous to coming to the Center..
