PREFACE (FROM THE TRANSLATOR) “Ideal life of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص” is an english translation of nine-

ty lectures delivered in front of a large audience first and then written in Urdu by Moulana Altaf-ur-Rehman Abbasi. These lectures were de-livered on each Sunday for many months and the general public took a keen interest by attending the course. I have attended the course and have found it immensely valuable. These lectures unfold the life of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص in a simple mode. Even the Ulema’s have benefitted from this refresher course. Lectures were delivered on power point showing maps and pictures of places where important events in the holy Proph-et’s life took place. To know Islam immensly, each aspect of the life of the holy Prophet is essential for every muslim. This book is a landmark feat achieved by Moulana Altaf-ur-Rehman. I have translated it in english from an Urdu version which is a comprehensive text. By the grace of God, Moulana Altaf-ur-Rehman Abbasi served Islam, when he wrote the book in Urdu condensed from his delivered oral texts. The Pictures and maps that are accredited are praiseworthy. The Arabian Peninsula where various wars and expeditions took place between the Quraish, Jews and the non-muslims are tagged with maps and pictures. Readers, are in a better position to understand every aspect of prophet’s life keeping in view the geo-politics of that area.

The family tree of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص explains the descent of Muhammad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص from the time of Hazrat Ibrahim n. From childhood to adulthood, important events and episodes of the prophet’s life are pre-cisely discussed which make it easier to understand. How did the Proph-et start the secret mission of spreading Islam? Dawat-e-Islam started from his family, later on he invited his relatives, towards the end he propagated Islam to all Arab tribes. The complex and dire circumstanc-es in which the holy Prophet spent his life in Mecca, the tumultuous environment is beyond description when he started introducing Islam in a barbaric setup.

The first Islamic State of Medina emerged on the world map and Islam began to spread rapidly to all continents of the world. The mar-riages of the holy Prophet was a very effective medium in training the fe-male population at that time. The details of Prophet’s domestic life have never been brought in a compact form before the world, therefore wives of the holy Prophet played a pivotal role.

There are many heart rending incidents and episodes of the

prophet’s life which have resulted to my sobbing when I started to trans-late Moulana Altaf-ur-Rehman Abbasi’s Urdu Book “Seerat-e-Tayeeba” in English. It has also resolved a perplexing question, I have been facing since childhood.

Was Islam spread through the Sword? The book provides an ex-cellent answer, the summary of which is NO”.

Modern Western scholars of different religions have spread illog-ical propaganda about the marriages of the holy Prophet. These issues are dealt adequately in the book.

Description of the last five days of the Holy Prophet’s ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص life is heart rending. It is a herculean task to translate the Seerat of a person with such great a stature as that of the holy Prophet. Words are inca-pable in describing smallest details of his life. I have prayed in solitude before Allah to help me assimilate and compose a better translation in English from Urdu text to the best of my capabilities. God helped me in this regard. English translation was important as I had always desired and felt that it is a mission in my life to place the life of the holy Prophet before the world, particularly the Christians, Hindus, Jews and other ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصreligious communities. For those muslims at large who are more con-versant in English. I have translated this book so that it reaches to the far end, of the world. I pray that Allah may accord success to my efforts and muslims and others should benefit after reading the book. I belong to the Civil service fraternity of Pakistan where we come across people from all segments of life. This writing opportunity is being used to en-cash through the English version of the book to be read throughout Paki-stan and abroad also. Oh Allah! Be merciful to the muslim Ummah who have forgotten the indispensable life of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص; So elevated was the life of the prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص that God himself had sent “Darood” on the prophet in Surah Al-Ahzab Ayat 56: Lo! Allah and his Angles shower their blessings on the prophet. O! Ye who believe! Say blessings on to him and salute him with a worthy salutation”;

PREFACE Holy Quran and the Seerat are the two edifices of Islam. Quran

is a fountain head where Allah has sent everything in his own words. Life of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص is a practical observance of the Holy Quran. The early followers (Sahabi’s) whole heartedly followed the dictates of Quran and Sunnah in true letter and spirit. Today, there is a need for everyone to consciously tie a strong bond with the two fountain heads of Islam (Quran and the life of the Holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص] i.e Sunnah). In order to become a practical muslim, it is necessary to acquire the knowledge through these means; Muslim Ummah ruled the world for a long time when they followed the dictates of Quran and Sunnah. When Ummah lost its grip on two sources of Hidayah, muslims lost the opportunity to rule the world. Today humanity is at its lowest ebb; the reign of lead-ership has gone to the hands of worthless people who treat people as slaves and degraded humans. These opportunists misuse the power, and suppress people for personal interests. The idea of achieving uni-versal peace and brotherhood remains bleak in the absence of studies of these facilities. Quran and Sunnah’s revival is the only way to bring about a change in the world.

Allah was kind to me when I started Islamic teaching and train-ing in the neighborhood of Masjid Siddique. This endeavor was possible due to the prayers of parents and my teachers, I was able to start courses in Tafseer-ul-Quran and Seerat-e-Tayeeba at various levels, Regular stu-dents and (Ulema’s) studying Quran and Sunnah both have benefited from the effort.

In teaching Tafseer-e-Quran, special attention was focused on Surahs of the Quran in reference to providing summaries with mean-ing of subject headings. In teaching Seerat, I began to think of ways and means to make people memorize important events of the holy Proph-et’s ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص life which were forgotten soon as the lectures were delivered. Im-portant events, their ideological significance remains in the memory for some time but soon slipped out due to human limitations. Not only do people forget the events, sometimes the events were intermixed with some other episode. The reason of forgetting is there because the geo-graphical configuration of the Arabian Peninsula is not known to many readers. This effort continued as the Quran says “Strive in the way, God will open the doors”. Allah widened my mental horizon, and I decided to use the computers and projectors obtained maps and pictures from the

Archives and showed important events of the Prophet’s life. This effort brought good results with the help and assistance of the Computer tech-nology, Seerat’s lectures were prepared and delivered to the students. I benefited a lot from this educative endeavor. Feedback of the audience was also encouraging. Majority of the student disclosed that screening maps and pictures helped them to learn the Seerat and memorize every phase of the life of the holy Prophet Research outcome of this effort was excellent as students became teachers. In order to expand the scope of this study and to reach to people who did not attend the course, CD’s were prepared and distributed throughout Pakistan.

By help of Allah, these lectures were reproduced in Urdu text writ-ing and a book by the name “Seerat Tayeeba” was published and read by a large number of people. The efforts are under way to expand its scope further Sheikh Hazrat Moulana Hafiz Nasiruddin Khakwani appreciat-ed the work and had desired that the effort of Mualana Altaf’s research should reach every household in Pakistan.

Seerat-e-Tayeeba has been drafted keeping in view the following three aspects:

1. All events that occured in the life of the holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص, were highlighted through maps of the places, detailing significance of the event. Old pictures were taken from the Archives as well as the latest versions were inscribed in the book The CD’s also contain these maps and pictures.

2. The revelations of Allah (Wahi) that revealed command-ments were also attached to these events, Surah and Ayats are also men-tioned.

3. Seerat of the Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص is sub-divided in 90 lectures. This was prepared for the student so as to study piecemeal or together as a whole. Anyone who wanted to read a part of the Seerat of the Holy Prophet’s ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص life could take out that relevant lecture, write a thesis and make an attempt to learn that by heart. Lecture a day was to complete 90 lectures in four months.

Maulana Zia-ur-Rehman Shahib transferred the lectures on a computer software. Readers can browse and get the required details in a span of no time.

In achieving the goal, everyone who has assisted and helped me

is worthy of prayers. If this effort have made some value addition, each one is requested to pray for me, my deceased parents, teachers both living and dead and those who have assisted me, Everyone is the ben-eficiary of Maghfirat. (Redemption) and my prayers includes everyone who helped me in achieving the desired results.

OH Allah! I am an emblem of humility. Before you I prostrate and beg for your benevolence and forgiveness. I am submitting before your majesty a weak and a feeble endeavour. Oh ALLAH! Accept my efforts! Through this the muslim Ummah, I pray regains the lost glory. OH God! Provide me mercy and Shafaat and companionship of the holy Prophet on the day of Judgment! (Ameen).

Wassalam,

Altaf-ur-Rehman Abbasi,

Lecture No. 1

UNIVERSE AND LIVING BEINGS Countless species inhabit the earth, They have different potenti-

alities viz-e-viz varied specialties, characteristics and attributes. A close look at them, brings in purview a distinct law of nature in operation. These species are also comparable from an angle of developmental stage each one is placed by nature. Each specie is blended in the universe, with a certain responsibility accordingly entrusted to them by nature. They all have duties allocated to them starting from lower level i.e. an atom having an insignifant live and ending on the “Man” (Human being) endowed with intellect and knowledge.

In reference to the above context, I start by discussing entities like Mountains and Rocks. These species are lifeless in the hierarchy of ob-jects, next to them are placed many types of minerals and plants available beneath the earth as well as on the surface. The plants are Semi-animate things that have slight insignificant movement and are entrusted with a higher responsibility by nature than the rocks and mountains. Next in the hierarchy are many kinds of animal and beasts spread all over the earth and skies. They are better placed and entrusted with a wider scope than rocks, mountains, plants and minerals. Most important creation in the species that inhabit the earth are humans who were created for a purpose and carry distinctive features. Human’s are gifted with intellect and have divine duties and responsibilities. Every human being is to fol-low the right path as set by the Creator (Allah). Thus intellect, a human possess is always subservient to the divine revelations sent by Allah. Dif-ferent approaches are followed by people around the world but intellect and knowledge of divine religion makes everyone follow the basic duty that is accountability to the Creator who has sent man to the earth for a certain purpose. Positive use of the intellect is the main purpose of cre-ation of a man otherwise the loss, that will accrue to a individual will be enormous. Using mental faculties to fulfill one’s whims and caprices is not the will of Allah in creating mankind. Allah Subhan-ou-Talaha states in the Holy Quran “Anybody is put to responsibility according to what he or she can sustain and endure”. The loss in misuse of intellect is depicted in the verses of the Holy Qur’an in Surah ASR (Para 30).

Translation: In the name of Allah who is excessively compassion-ate, extremely merciful.

27

1. The ASR called Zamana (All)

2. Pointedly man is in loss?

3. But those who believed and did good deeds and counseled each other unto the right religion and counseled other unto endurance.

How can the discussion at hand conclude? To answer the com-plex question, I can say that out of all the species discussed above, the one superior specie are the human beings. They are important because nature has endowed them with faculties of intellect and by divine will that must be used positively. Faculty that elevates humans above all spe-cies is the knowledge of Allah and the universe. That is why Humans are called “Ashraf-ul-Makhluqat”.

Intellect in humans is bound by divine knowledge. Following the divine way, humans are rated as true believers. Holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص was an emblem of divine knowledge and practices. Messenger of God not only taught Ummah to recite prayers, but he also led the prayers himself as a Imam. People were ordered to offer prayers five times, where as he offered Nafals of Tahajod, Ishraq, Chasht and Awwa Been. Tahajjud was made Nafal Namaz but Holy Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص still continued to perform it late in the night while his feet soared and swelled as he stood for hours in front of Allah. Prophet loved the Tahajjud Nafal more than any other non obligatory prayers.

Muslim Ummah religiously observe fasts in the month of Ramzan, but the Prophet himself kept Nafal fast every month and sometime would continue fasting for many days. Whenever he instructed the Um-mah to spend in the way of Allah in charity, Alms and Sadaqats, he in-structed them to keep a large part of money for personal use, whereas, he parted with the whole money and gave it to the needy and did not keep anything for himself.

Negativity in human behavior always brings about tyranny and repression but by reading the Holy Quran, a person can develop faculty to unlearn negative traits. The positive force is termed as Emaan (Faith).

It is observed that people who were endowed by Hidayah, became a guiding force for other people to lead a successful life. Few unlucky ones who were not endowed by Hidayah, remained at loss throughout the lives. The List of successful people in the annals of history is large in number. They ruled the world at various time and clime. Out of them

28

there were great warriors who conquered many parts of the world. Some great men were philosophers who provided various systems to live bet-ter through the faculty of philosophy and mysticism. If we go to the start of the human race, a son of Adam treaded on the right path whereas the other one followed the wrong way and succumbed to the way of the devil. Descendant of Adam n who followed the one who went astray was deprived of Hidayah. On the other hand people who followed the right path as set by the other son of Adam were the people who were great leaders. A question that can arise in any body mind is simple. What are the parameters of an a ideal life? The answer is also simple; Proph-ets are an ideal prototype sent by God. They are infallible, impeccable in character on all scales of human measurement. As soon a Prophet was chosen by God and sent to the earth, ignorance and despondency subsided. It was impossible for people to falter in presence of prophets. Those who did not follow them were unlucky and were deprived of Hi-dayah. As Prophets are sample of an ideal life, they always remained fo-cal in the minds of the people throughout history. Basic need at all times has been to try to emulate an ideal life. This was possible if prophets were followed. Many People who led a virtuous life still did not come up to ideal level. They all fell short of an ideal category and that is why they were not chosen by God as messengers. Influence of great men, not cho-sen by God turned out to be transitory. As soon as they died, they were forgotten and history never recorded them as great because they were not a true sample for the humanity. Pure and enlightened life is only seen in men who are chosen by God as Prophets. The hope of the world to survive rested solely on these men chosen by God to bring a marked change of enduring nature in the world and to build a sound human race. The efforts of the prophets throughout history impacted men both in the rank and files. Tauheed is a preamble on which all Prophets start-ed teaching. The revealed text was sent to them, and they were given an additional duty to invite people towards God and his Book.

Prophets were tasked to spread the message of God and also to build a sound human race. Prophet influence both the rulers and the ruled, rich and the poor, educated or the ignorant alike because they are perfect models. People respond to them quickly. Task given to all Proph-ets were to strengthen Eman (Faith) without distinction in caste, creed and color. This was the prime mission of each Prophet. History is a wit-ness that when the Prophet’s completed homework for which they were sent, people who were killing each other, became an emblem of sacri-

fice ready to lay down lives for others. Miracles together with Ideal life is conjoined to the Prophets who are chosen by Allah, infallible at every count and time of human existence on the earth.

LECTURE NO 2

IDEAL LIFE Ideal is a word coined for something par excellence because ideal

life is measured by few attributes which ordinary people cannot accom-plish i.e. (a) Ideal life should encompass Comprehensiveness without any doubts arising in any body’s mind (b) An Ideal life is one where there is practice in words as well as actions/ deeds.

c). An ideal life is one which Prophets spent and is revealed and recorded in history.

d). The Creator Allah Specify an ideal life which all prophets had lived perfectly throughout their lives.

Life of the last Prophet is a perfect model because it was accurate-ly recorded to its minutest detail by the followers. Nothing was left out, obscured or concealed. Historians were not able to find any discrepan-cy in the recorded Hadiths by the followers of the holy Prophet Issues and criticism from the masses is none due to perfect recording. Holy Prophet personality was an ideal one where all details are available, per-fect example for generations to come. A question that is usually asked What does an ideal life constitute? An ideal Life should be comprehen-sive and divinely guided. This cannot be achieved by anyone, save the Prophets of Allah. Every divine revelation that was sent to the Prophet, was brought to practice immediately by the followers; leaving no room for any doubt. Followers of the Holy Prophet took the Job of recording Sunnah to the minutest level religiously making the recorded life of the Prophet available to everyone.

HISTORY Traditions (Hadiths) of the Holy Prophet are the most authentic

and reliable source of Seerat-e-Rasool. They have been recorded empir-ically, leaving no room for any doubt. Life of the Holy Prophet and its

Sunnah was recorded either by writing or memorizing words and ac-tions in three different periods.

COLLECTION OF HADITHS

SAHABA’s (FOLLOWERS) AND THE TAABIEEN’s CONTRIBUTION

Sahabi’s were the primary source in recording the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet. People who met the Prophet and embraced Islam before him and died as muslims are called Sahabi’s. People who met the Saha-ba’s, became muslims at their hands and later died as muslims are called the (Taabieen). Taabieen collected some additional details of the life of Holy Prophet. The people who came in the period after them were peo-ple who met the Taabieen, became muslims and later died as such are called “Taaba Taabieen”. Taaba Taabieens also collected details of the life of the Holy Prophet locally as well as country wise.

COLLECTION OF HADITHS BY LEARNED PEOPLE “THE ULEMAS”

This period is spread over a longer length of time as the people called the “Mohadiseen” undertook work to compile other details of the life of the Holy Prophet. Sahaba’s and Taabieens took up the task of com-piling Hadith as a sacred trust. Recording is available in its original form carried over from generation to generation and lending credence to the faculty of recording traditions in an unblemished form. Holy Prophet Muhammad’s ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص life is distinctively different if it is compared to other Prophets who had been sent to the earth. Recording of Sunnah takes into account the evidence of the followers who were the Ravees. The narrators (Ravee’s) were true disciples of the Prophet having an unblem-ished character.

COLLECTION OF HADITH IN THE BEST PERIOD CALLED (“KHAIR-UL-QUROON”)

Holy Prophet stated that “The best people were those who had lived during his life time. They were called “Sahaba’s”. In succession, there are some people who met the followers (Sahaba’s) in life time and

became muslims, they are called (Taabieen). Some people later met the Taabieen, they are called the “Taaba Taabieen”. Islam took a perfect shape with the efforts of these people. During twenty three years spent in Medina, teachings of the Holy Prophet moulded the Sahaba’s in a per-fect shape that is why they were called the perfect disciples of the Holy Prophet. Sahaba’s were dedicated persons who followed the dictates of Allah and Sunnah-e-Rasool intricately. Sahaba’s learnt Ayats and Surahs of the Quran, and immediately brought the instruction of God into prac-tice in their daily lives.

Sahaba’s lived for about 110 years from the Hijra Calendar which includes a golden period of 40 years of “Khulfa-e-Rashidin”, In Between 110 years, the followers of the Prophet continued to compile the tradi-tions and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet with complete authencity.

HADITH’s COMPILATION BY “TAABIEEN”Taabieen were people who embraced Islam at the hand of the Sa-

haba’s and died as muslims but had never seen or met the Holy Prophet. Few Taabieen were alive in the life time of the holy Prophet but they did not get a chance to meet him, whereas some were born after the death of the Holy Prophet. Taabieen are therefore called students of the Sahaba’s and remained alive for a period of 150 years.

COMPILATION OF HADITHS BY “ TAABA TAABIEEN”“Taaba Taabieen” were the people who met the “Taabieen” and

became muslims and died as such. They were the students of the “Taa-bieen”. The period in which they lived is stretched over 220 years from the Hijra Calendar Year.

Period (Hijra Calendar) (Years)

Sahaba’s 110

Taabieen 150

Taaba Taabieen 220

Traditions (Hadith) were accurately recorded by them through the following modes:

Traditionally, the Arab race is famous for having a sharp memory. It is reported in history books that the Arab poets were famous in memo-rizing couplets. Hundreds of verses were memorized by people on hear-ing poems as recited by the poets on the stage. Sahaba’s took recording work as a religious duty and recorded the traditions by memorizing each and every detail of the Hadith. Sahaba’s had a sharp memory and when on hearing, they memorized everything spoken by the holy Prophet in one go. Some Sahaba’s recorded by pen some other details. At the time of the last sermon delivered by the Prophet on the occasion of Hajj, a follower by the name of Ibn Shah requested the Holy Prophet to grant him permission to write the “Khutba speech”. Holy Prophet allowed him to write the Khutba speech and give it to other people to read.

Abu Hurairah h narrates that Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Umar Bin Aas h was second to him for he recorded many traditions of the Holy Prophet. He recorded the tradition in writing, whereas Abu Hurairah h memorized the Hadith and narrated it to people.

PRACTISING HADITHS BY ACTION AND DEEDS

Sahaba’s were dedicated men and women who followed the Sun-nah of the Holy Prophet and were true imitators. As soon as some verses of Quran were revealed on the Prophet, followers immediately brought the content of Quran in action after understanding its meaning. This was due to Sahaba’s over-zealous commitment to learn the Sunnah. They were seen repeating the words and actions of the holy Prophet every now and then. Hadith became prescription for health and soul says Moulana Manzoor, a famous Ulema. Hadith compiled by the Sahaba’s were accurate certification of the life of the Holy Prophet. Hazrat Abdul-lah Bin Umar h who once accompanied the holy Prophet on a journey, from Mecca to Medina, suddenly remembered the place where the Holy Prophet had rested during the Journey. He repeated the action. Sahaba’s were true imitators of the life of the Prophet and never committed an error while learning the actions and words of Sunnah. They believed in completing this work as a divine duty entrusted by Allah to them. Efforts of the Sahaba’s in recording traditions (Sunnah) stand till date.
