From the Desk of Deacon Chris…. THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
I have recently done some reflecting on the Sacrament of
Confirmation, and referred to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) which is a wonderful source of information
for all of us. As those of us who have been confirmed know, the Bishop is most often the minister of the Sacrament of
Confirmation. The Bishop extends hands over the confir-mandi, says a prayer, anoints the individual with Sacred
Chrism, and says these words, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Did you know there are seven gifts that are traditionally
associated with the Holy Spirit? Now, we all know there are many gifts that we receive from God. Everything we have is
a gift from God, but I thought it would be good to remind everyone of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. They are
based on Isaiah 11:1-3, and include wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety (reverence), and fear of
the Lord (wonder and awe in God’s presence). Do you ever reflect on these gifts in prayer? To be per-
fectly honest, I rarely make a point of reflecting on the gifts in prayer, but I think I should. Maybe we all should pray and
reflect on:
Wisdom – Wisdom enables us to see the world from God’s viewpoint, which can help us come to grasp
the purpose and plan of God for our lives.
Understanding – The gift of understanding is what helps us to know ourselves, and how God has a plan
for each of us. The gift of understanding helps us to discern what God’s plan is.
Knowledge – The gift of knowledge helps us reflect on the mystery of God, The Father, The Son, and The
Holy Spirit. Through prayer and contemplation we are given knowledge of the mysteries of God, and
our Catholic faith. Counsel – This is also known as the gift of right judg-
ment. The Holy Spirit helps us to form our moral character, and train our consciences to choose to
follow Jesus and reject Satan and sin. Fortitude – The gift of fortitude gives us the courage to
stand up for Jesus, and what we believe. Fortitude fills our hearts with the courage to trust in God’s
divine providence. Piety – The gift of piety blesses us with the reverence of
our Triune God, The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is with that same reverence that we come before
the Lord every time we receive Jesus himself in Holy Communion.
Fear of the Lord – This gift is not fear in the way we often think of fear. It is the wonder and awe we
feel knowing we are in God’s presence as we form a loving relationship with Jesus. It is with the gift
of the fear of the Lord that we humbly approach God with gratitude, glory, and praise.
I often turn to the Holy Spirit in prayer, and ask for guid-ance in my life. Perhaps you do the same. Sometimes I
think I take the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit for granted, like so many of the gifts I receive from God. I’d like to change
that. How about you? God bless.
Deacon Chris

Our Goal is to promote health & wellness within the values, beliefs, practices of our faith community.
Nurses’ Note: More Volunteers are still needed for “Two by Two”, the Trans-
figuration Parish Faith in Action Team. Join your fellow
parishioners on this team that provides non-medical support and friendship to someone caring for a family member with
dementia/Alzheimer. All volunteers are offered training and
continued support. By belonging to this team you only give the time you can when you can because there are several of
you to share the role of helping. To receive more informa-
tion, contact Pat Hebert @ 692-2135.
Health Tips:. Scratchy throat? Try these easy, at-home soothers.
Whether your throat is scratchy due to dry air or because you’re
fighting off a cold, here are four of our favorite things you can do to ease the discomfort: 1. Gargle with a salt-water solution to re-
duce inflammation, loosen mucus, and flush out irritants that con-
tribute to a sore throat. To make a salt-water gargle, dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and gargle a mouthful of
the solution for 30 to 60 seconds, three times a day. Spit it out,
don’t swallow it. 2. Sip honey and lemon tea. Mix one tablespoon
of honey with a squeeze of lemon juice and some warm water. Sip away. 3. Try a neti-pot with a salt water nasal rinse morning
and night or, if that fails, try a corticosteroid nasal spray, available
over the counter without a prescription. Nasal sprays — both salt water alone, and corticosteroid — reduce postnasal drip, which
can contribute to a sore throat. 4. Run a vaporizer in your bed-
room through the night. Breathing either warm or cool mist, espe-cially while you sleep, will reduce swelling in air passages, im-
prove mucus membrane function, and soothe an irritated throat.
If your sore throat lasts for more than a week, or if it’s difficult to
swallow, see your doctor to rule out a more serious condition.

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT We will show a religion based, and spiritually uplifting

vember 20, 2016 beginning at 7:00 pm. This is an excel-lent opportunity for whole family entertainment and faith

We have begun collecting for our Annual Thanksgiving
Food Drive. Each weekend for the rest of October and No-
vember we are collecting nonperishable food items to place in bas-
kets for families within the community. All donations are appreci-ated, but to be sure we have a nice variety we've made suggestions
for each week. The suggested donations for this weekend are
breakfast items. Next week the suggestions are Cake Mixes, Frosting, Pie Crust, Pie Filling and Brownie Mix. Donations
can be left in the boxes at the entrance of our churches. If you are
interested in donating a turkey or roasting chicken, please call the church offices at 235-0337 and 753-4554. Your generosity last
year helped provide a full Thanksgiving dinner and some extra
food items to 35 families. Also, please consider joining us
on November 20th from 11:00-1:00 to pack the baskets.
COME JOIN THE EVANGELIZATION TEAM! Each of us is called to spread the "Good News" of Jesus.
The Evangelization team is looking for new members to help us in our efforts to evangelize. We are also looking
for a new secretary to record and distribute minutes from
our monthly meetings. Everyone is welcome to join the
team, and offer their time and talents in this most important
ministry. If you feel you are being called to become more
involved in your faith, please consider this call to Evangeli-
zation. Please contact Sandy Barrett at 237-9357 or at sbar-
rett1749@ yahoo.com if you are interested.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)
Have you or anyone you know ever thought about be-
coming Catholic? Or are you a Catholic who has not
received all of the sacraments? Many people assume that RCIA is only for people who have never been Catholic
and are looking to “convert.” The fact is that RCIA can be
for anyone, Catholics, who have not received all of their sacraments or non-Catholics who are interested in learning
more about the Catholic faith. This process is an individual
spiritual journey for anyone seeking an active relationship
with the Catholic Church. The Community of Transfigura-tion Parish warmly welcomes all and will be companions
on the journey for all who come. Groups will be gathering
soon. If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA process, contact Pat Hebert at (518) 235-0337, ext
5 or 753-4554, ext 13.
