When IBM offered to donate $22mm worth of equipment used for the fabri-

cation of semi-conductor devices to Sandia National Laboratories, it was one

of the largest technology transfers ever from industry to government. In re-

sponse, Sandia established the Center for Microelectronics Technologies us-

ing that equipment.

For the installation of the IBM equipment, Sandia adopted the orbital weld-

ing techniques used for installing high-purity tubing in ultraclean facilities.

These welding techniques are mandated by the Uniform Fire Code and the

Uniform Building Code for applications involving hazardous gases.

Arc Machines automated welding equipment, including micro-processor con-

trolled M207 power supplies and M9 weld heads, was selected for this pro-

ject. The resulting welds were of consistent high quality and had a smooth

inner weld bead which prevents entrapment of particulates while permitting

unrestricted gas flows.

By using Arc Machines sophisticated welding equipment, not only was the

project completed on time but the engineering management process used was

awarded one of the first, prestigious Sandia President’s Quality Awards.
