What is Transana?

a powerful workbench for analyzing and transcribing video/audio data. Once the data is transcribed researchers are able to identify and evaluate analytically significant portions of these videos (‘clips’), as well as to manage large video collections.

and applies searchable analytic keywords to the

Those keywords potentially serve for

expanding and developing theoretical conception of

what a set of videos show.

Transana exports its data to statistical packages

Step 1. Getting Prepared 1.1. Prepare video to use in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, most AVI video, QuickTime MOV, MP4, and M4V formats1.2. Open the program by creating a database. Name it simple without spaces and punctuation signs (e.g. ‘Transana’, ‘Demonstration’)

Step 2. Transcribing 2.1. Upload the video into the interface:- create a series (which will hold a group of related source: 1) right click on the database window to add ‘a series’; 2) name the series in Series ID Box. - create an episode within the series (where you will upload the video you want to transcribe and analyze. Another episode in this series will be related to the same topic but may be created on different time):

- 1) Right click the series and choose ‘Add Episode’;- 2) Click ‘Add File’ to browse the media on Desktop;- 3) Name the Episode in ID Box. Then, click OK

Whenever you

- a verbatim transcript (represents the spoken words on the video) in rtf. txt format;

- a transcript of nonverbal components ( according to Jefferson Coding System) (See Appendix 1)

2.2. Write a transcript that corresponds to the video being

analyzed. It should be:

"Transcript ID" is the name of the Episode

"Transcriber" can be used to indicate your name

"Title/Comment" can be used in any way you wish.

When done with the Transcript Name, a dialogue box will pop up asking to create a “wave file”. Click ‘yes’ in the box. This way the

software will start extricating the audio form from the video by making it visual above the transcript window.

- click the Edit Mode icon that allow you to edit the text.- use control combinations to create/annotate a transcript (Press Ctrl-S to start/pause the video; Ctrl-A to the video with a ten-second rewind; Ctrl-D to start with video with no rewind; Ctrl-F to move the video forward by ten seconds)- insert a blank line in the transcript each time the speaker changes. - click the Save icon frequently. (Save when finished transcribing.)

2.3. Synchronizing

• Click the ¤ icon; • Click the Edit Mode;• Set the video at the beginning

(The Current Time, as shown in the Visualization window, should read "0:00:00.0." If it doesn't, click on the far left edge of the Waveform to position the video at the beginning);

• Place the cursor at the beginning of your transcript;

• Press Ctrl-T to insert a time code at the beginning of that line (a red circle will appear on the spot. ENSURE every TIMECODE CORRELATES with the speaker’s speech in the video clip);

• Press Ctrl-S to start the video;• Press Ctrl-S to pause the video;• Put the cursor at the beginning of

the next line in your transcript;• Press Ctrl-T to insert a time code

(Note that you can also click the buttonPress Ctrl-S (or Ctrl-D) to restart the video;

• Repeat the previous steps to start and pause the video and to add time codes at the beginning of each speaker's turn

Now, how can we control the video?

There are some shortcuts be used for playing with the video:

Ctrl-D to pause and restart the video playback without auto-rewinding

Ctrl-A to rewind the video by 10 seconds

Ctrl-F to fast-forward the video by 10 seconds

Ctrl-N to cause the next time-coded segment to be played

Ctrl-P to cause the previous time-coded segment to be played

Ctrl-T to cause a time code for the current video position (as indicated in

the Sound Visualization Window) to be inserted at the current cursor

position in the Transcript.

tree, then click Add Keyword Group – as on the previous slide;

2. As you see this dialog box, name it and click OK;

Note:Transana will save your first keyword group in case you add some keywords into it.

To add a keyword: Right-click your new keyword group. Click Add Keyword from the resulting

menu. Type in your new keyword. Add the optional definition.

transcripts you would like to focus your analytical

Highlight the section of the text you wish to turn into a clip (as shown above);

Point to the highlighted text. Meanwhile highlight the keyword, which the clip corresponds

to; Click the ‘create a quick clip’ icon ; Find the clip in ‘Quick Clips’ section in the Database window

(all the newly formed clips Transana sends here); If needed, rename the clip.

After creating a quick clip:

Transana will automatically save every quick clip in the corresponding folder.

When all the clips are created you may add some extra

keyword groups (to distribute those clips in thematic groups

accordingly).

Why maps? to analyze keyword use for an episode; To show how keywords have been applied to clips from that

episode. (Note: - each color represents a different clip; - the presence of the same keyword at the same location in different clips is not represented).

4.3. Collection (of clips) report

Right-click the name of a collection in the database tree.

Choose Collection Report from the pop-up menu.

Review the report (see the Collection Report Example on the left).

Click Close to exit.

To generate collection report for data analysis:

This report may provide a rough "script" for a collection using the ’Play All Clips’ option (for details, see the section ’Play All Clips to Analyze your Data’ in the next slide).

By playing all clips in order it is possible to analyze the content: Right-click the name of the collection in the

database tree. Choose Play All Clips from the pop-up menu. Review all of the clips to verify that they belong

together having been categorized properly.
