Train to gain and retain: is your business prepared for future conditions?

Western Australia has experienced close to a decade of extraordinary growth with no end in sight to the demand for the State’s raw materials. The current period of prosperity, fed by booming markets for iron ore and petroleum products, is evident across almost all industry sectors.

Many business owners and managers feel protected by

this ‘cloak of invincibility’, allowing them to confidently weather

the current economic climate. However this apparent boom is

throwing some unexpected challenges our way.

The forecastFormer WA Technology and Industry Advisory Council

(WATIAC) Chairman Prof Michael V. Henderson believes

the global financial crisis’s impact on demand for the State’s

commodities is only short term and that WA will experience a

high demand for labour well into this century.

WATIAC’s Managing Western Australia’s Economic

Expansion (2009) report predicts demand for labour will

significantly outpace the State’s ability to supply workers and that

WA would be short 224,000 workers by 2016.

It also warned business managers to expect a dramatic

increase in demand for housing, utilities, infrastructure, social

services and training.

Workforce development planningCCI has represented your business interests during early

development of the State Government’s initiative, Skilling WA: A

workforce development plan for Western Australia. This project

prioritises employee attraction and retention, and reforming the

State’s training system to better meet local industry and business

needs.

“Theseshareddriversalertusthatadaptabilityandskillsinleadership,businessplanningandriskmanagementarecriticaltosuccessfulbusinessesofthefuture.”

This year the State’s network of industry training councils

have been reviewing global and local industry trends, and

interpreting key business data to guide future workforce

development initiatives.

FutureNow Industry Training Council CEO Mal Gammon

told Training Today their findings have already highlighted a need

for widespread skills integration, particularly for people with

Information and Communications Technology (ICT), creative and

business capabilities.

“These shared drivers alert us that adaptability and skills in

leadership, business planning and risk management are critical

to successful businesses of the future,” he said.

“Earlier this year Innovation and Business Skills Australia

(IBSA) released its Environmental Scan (2010) which listed the

volatile global economy and widespread business pressures as

significant challenges across all industry sectors.”

Mal said the 2010 E-scan identified four skills critical to future

success:

• business management

• negotiation / collaboration

• licensing

• marketing / commercialisation

So what does this mean for you?The key underlying factor is that WA’s skills needs are

largely determined by cyclical industries. This presents specific

challenges in planning ahead and ensuring you’re ready to deliver

the right training mix when needed.

Businesses are already experiencing flow-on impacts from

rapid developments in new technology for example. Demand for

technology skills has leaped to prominence with the roll-out of

the National Broadband Network but this is due for completion in

2018.

The take-home message here is that many new jobs will be

created in occupations requiring flexible, vocational education

and training rather than a university qualification.

CCI trainingCCI Business Training Services has earned a reputation for

providing industry-driven, quality training for organisations of all

sizes throughout WA. With a wealth of experience and a team of

highly qualified professionals, CCI is well positioned to help you

navigate these waters and plan for the year ahead.

This edition of Training Today reveals 33 new courses which

CCI will deliver in 2011 and a selection of courses worth a closer

look has been flagged for easy reference under the In Focus

heading.

The outlook is fine for 2011 and CCI will help you prepare for

changing conditions by ensuring training stays on your radar.

Stop discrimination and harrasment in your workplaceSexual harassment, discrimination, workplace bullying and other equal opportunity issues in the workplace can be very costly for you business.

Employers face the prospect of substantial fines and can be

ordered to pay large sums in compensation to employees if laws

are breached.

Does your business mitigate risks by ensuring managers

and staff are aware of obligations and respond

appropriately to issues?

Are your policies and procedures compliant with

legislation and free from discrimination?

Are you aware of the new “General Protections”

obligations imposed on employers under the Fair Work

Act 2009?

Customised Workplace Training

CCI’s expert employee relations staff can assist your business by training managers and staff in their obligations and reviewing your policies for legislative compliance.

A CCI expert can come to your business, making it easier for staff and minimising the time and cost impacts of training on your business.

CCI understands that every business faces its own unique

challenges and issues, and there are times when the traditional

one-size approach to training is both impractical and unrealistic.

A customised EEO training solution can assist to:

• reduce the risk of discrimination, harassment and

bullying

• achieve a fair and respectful workplace

• raise awareness of what constitutes discrimination and

harassment.

Customised courses and workshops offer an affordable and

flexible option for all businesses.

For further information on a tailored EEO course delivered in

your workplace, or any other customised training requirements

your business may have, contact CCI Business Training Services

on 9365 7500 or email [email protected].
