AAACCCKKKNNNOOOWWWLLLEEEDDDGGGEEEMMMEEENNNTTT Training on Basics of Poultry Management was the 2nd training of LTC

with Pakistan Jobs Project USAID/ PaRRSA and Lasoona (Society of

Human & Natural Resource Development). LTC did commitment to impart

a practical oriented and quality in campus training to the farmers, while the

later showed trust. By the Grace of Allah Almighty we delivered what we

pledged. I am highly thankful to Allah Almighty for His Blessings that

enable my organization to accept the challenges.

Agricultural University Peshawar, Prof: Dr. Khan Bahadur Marwat for his

strong support, encouragement and appreciation regarding this training.

EEEXXXEEECCCUUUTTTIIIVVVEEE SSSUUUMMMMMMAAARRRYYY LTC is working as Training Services Provider in collaboration with Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences KP Agricultural University Peshawar and provides quality services to the farmers of various governmental and non governmental organizations. 25 days training on “basics of poultry management” Pakistan Jobs Project USAID/PaRRSA/Lasoona Was Part of PaRRSA Led Apprenticeship & Industrial Sector Development Program. Lasoona (Society for human & Natural Resource Development) and LTC agreed on to conduct the said training in the very prestigious Poultry Sciences Department of AUP. LTC is as usual committed to impart above 70% practical training and shared the idea of provision of day old chicks for the said purpose with Pakistan Jobs Project. The training was started from July 27 in the University Campus. The participants were stayed in Emerald Guest House University Town. For pick & dropt LTC provided University Bus to facilitate the trainees. The panel of resource persons consisted of 16 members had poultry researchers from the University, poultry experts from the field and trainers from LTC. The curriculum was designed in such a manner that in the first five days the trainees were taught basics of Poultry shed, brooding ring and farm sanitation and disinfection, while in the second part chicks rearing in experimental farm was planned. Day to day management practices was a compulsory class in which the participants conducted management practices with their own hands. Dr. Muhammad Inam was the course coordinator; he facilitated the trainees during the training hours in the venue and after the training in their residence. The training organizer Assistant Prof: Dr. Naila Imtiaz fully supported the activity and tried her best to make the training successful. In the training report first part is about introduction to the course, background of the organization, training approaches, training methodology and Boarding Lodging. In the second part, days wise activities are explained and glimpses of these activities are pasted in the form of pictures. To make the report short and comprehensive visual depiction of the activities was given preference over narrative details.

In the last part of the report various relevant documents are annexed to make the report more understandable. The annexure consist of list of the trainees, evaluation profarma of the training course, initial and final evaluation of the trainees. This section also consists of clipping regarding the said training in the national press. The training report has also glimpses of Monitoring and Evaluation conducted by LTC, AUP, Lasoona Organization and teams of Pakistan Jobs Project USAID/PaRRSA.

Poultry is the 2nd biggest industry after Textile contributing to the national

economy. The contribution of poultry in meat is up to 19%. Broiler farming

is one of the feasible businesses for small farmers. In our rural areas where

poverty is dominant in communities, broiler farming may become a better

livelihood mean and a source of self-employment.

This sort of training has equipped the trainees with modern poultry

practices and know-how of broiler farming. They will be able to maintain bio

security and bio safety protocols at their farm that will lead to safe and

sound poultry production.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the above training were as under:

To impart skill to the farmers regarding general Poultry Management.

To develop the competences of the target farmerson scientific lines.

To transfer modern Poultry husbandry practices for wider adoption and replication.

To develop a cadre of skilled human resource for Poultry Industry.

To create self-employment opportunities at rural level.

DESIGNING OF TRAINING CURRICULUM

The training curriculum contains most of the topics which were of crucial importance for the farmers that are involved in poultry. This curriculum has been developed for the poultry farmers and tested with successful results in the farming community during the trainings. Timely suggestions and valuable inputs both from the farmers and experts have been incorporated for improvement. However for further improvement, there is still a vacuum that has to be filled from time to time with valuable inputs from the farmers and experts as well. But after the arrival of the trainees, Livestock Trainers & Consultants conducted a Training Need Assessment session to evaluate the participants and to address the problems faced by them in their real life so that to make the training programme more purposeful. The predesigned curriculum was incorporated with the problems of the farmers identified during the TNA.

TRAINING APPROACHES

LTC believes in quality and is therefore committed to conduct practical based trainings so as to equip the trainees with new skills and knowledge. Our trainers are more person’s centered and less subject centered by exercising unique training approaches

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The most important thing in a training programme is its training

methodology that can make the training programme more fruitful and result

oriented. The result of every training programme is the acquisition of

knowledge, building of skill and change in the attitude of the participants.

This training was more than 70% practical oriented with unique training

methodologies of Trail Error and Learning by Doing. Our training



methodologies enable the trainees to feel the gap where they were and

where they wanted to be

BOARDING & LODGING

LTC provided a standard Guest House (Emerald Lodge) having well-

furnished and Air Conditioned rooms at University Town Peshawar, the

near most accommodation to the training Venue. Our aim was to provide a

clean, peaceful and comfortable environment to our trainees. The boarding

& lodging Facility was appreciated by the participants as well as concerned

personnel of the Pakistan Jobs Project.

PICK & DROP

To make the trainees more facilitated and save the time, they were

provided with pick & drop facility. For this purpose LTC hired Bus from

Agricultural University Peshawar. The bus was used to pick them from their

residence and Drop them in the training Venue and vice versa.

MONITORING & EVALUATION

LTC has a well-established monitoring and evaluation system of its

training. The system covers monitoring directly from LTC and monitoring

and evaluation from the concerned department of the University. If the

donor organization wants to monitor & evaluate the training activities

directly by their own team, it is highly encouraged. In this training a full time

training Coordinator and training supervisor was covering the daily training

activities and he regularly reported to LTC Head Office. Prof: Dr. Ghulam

Habib Dean FAHVS took personal interest in the evaluation process and

he evaluated the participants at the start, mid and then at the end of the

training. He highly appreciated the standard and quality of the training.

Similarly Dr. Ihsan Ullah Livestock Officer Pakistan Jobs Project Lasoona

and Mr. Hakim Khan Agriculture Sector Specialist Pakistan Jobs Project

visited the training venue time to time and observed the training activities.

They were also very satisfied regarding the training procedures.

A special Monitoring Team of Pakistan Jobs Project also visited the venue

in the mid of the training. They evaluated various training activities on the

spot. They also interviewed randomly selected trainees about the training

and got satisfactory answers. The team appreciated the atmosphere,

methodology, course contents, and hands on training and participatory

approaches of the training. They also expressed their satisfaction and

pleasure about the quality of Boarding & Lodging provided by LTC to the

trainees.

DAY-1 On the first day of the training, the trainees were brought from the Guest

House to training Venue through University Bus. They were registered and

school’s items including writing pad, ball point, and a file folder, was

distributed among the participants. Then the inaugural ceremony was

conducted in the VC’s Committee Room. The Ceremony was started with

the recitation of the Holly Quran by Dr. Inam. Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib Dean

FAHVS welcomed the participants. He stressed the need for skill

development. The honorable Dean also briefed the trainees regarding

facilities in the prestigious Department of Poultry Sciences. He lauded the

idea of Chicks rearing during the training to make the training more

practical oriented. Course Introduction was presented by Madam Naila

Imtiaz, while Prof: Dr. Muhammad Subhan Qureshi threw light on the

importance of Poultry farming particularly in rural areas of Khyber

Pakhtunkhwa. The Program Director LTC Dr. Shaukat Khan claimed that

this training will be more than 70% practical. He assured the participants of

every possible facility regarding the training. Later on Dr. Ihsan Ullah

Livestock Officer Lasoona Organization shared the role of his organization

in Pakistan Jobs Project. He hoped the need for practical oriented training.

Mr. Hakim Khan Agriculture Sector Specialist PJP introduced Pakistan

Jobs Project. He briefed the audience about the mandate and role of his

Project especially in militancy hit areas like Swat.

The Chief Guest of the event, the Acting Vice Chancellor Prof: Dr.

Muhammad Naeem in his speech appreciated the initiatives taken by LTC

in collaboration with AUP for Capacity Building of the farmers. He

welcomed all the participants to the University. He also directed the

concerned staff of the Poultry department to provide possible help and

support for successful conduction of the training. At the end the guests and

participants were provided with light refreshment from LTC.

After the Ceremony the trainees were backed to the training venue where

our learned resource person Dr. Naila Imtiaz conducted TNA with the help

of white charts and group discussion. Instructor Mr. Mushtaq gave a tour

around the training facilities to the participants.

DAY -2

In the 2nd day of training the farmers were engaged for the whole day by a

well experienced teacher of the department ex dean FAHVS

Prof: (rtd) Dr. Fazal Raziq Durrani. He started the session with introduction

to poultry Farming. He enlightened the importance of white meat, its

demand and supply gap in Pakistan. Dr. Durrani told the trainees in detail

the pre-requisites for construction of a poultry farm. He stressed on proper

planning before Poultry Farm construction. He told the participants that

how and where they should construct their farm and what should be the

distance of a poultry farm from the human population.

The learned resource Person also shared his past 38 years’ experience

with the farmers. They were told about various factors that affect poultry

marketing. The whole day was very interactive, participatory and

informative. The farmers were quite enthusiastic about new learning

DAY-3

The day was started with lecture of Dr. Naila Imtiaz. She discussed in detail

different housing designs. The learned trainer discussed thoroughly each

aspect of each designs in respect to local climate. The participants were

told that what type of Poultry shed is deemed fit in their area. The session

was interactive in nature comprising asking telling and group discussion.

Mr. Mushtaq the 2nd resource person of the day leaded the trainees to the

poultry farm in the vicinity. They were told how to clean and disinfect the

shed before arrival of the checks. The trainer discussed the importance of

disinfection and various tools of disinfection of a poultry shed. Mr. Mushtaq

described in detail the importance and technique of fumigation. The

farmers were told regarding the procedure and steps of fumigation. The

theory was followed by practical. The trainees were instructed to first wash

all the utensils of the farm with their own hands and then they were told to

do the fumigation process by themselves. The farmers highly appreciated

the session. They were emotional to learn the mechanism of fumigation

which was a very new practice for them.

Mr. Mushtaq told the participants about the significant role of disinfection of

Poultry farm in disease prevention and control. He stressed on proper

cleaning and disinfection of the farm as a small negligence on the part of

the farmers that result in huge losses.

DAY -4

In the first session of the day Dr. Naila Imtiaz practically performed

preparation of the poultry farm before the arrival of chicks. She discussed

all the necessary steps that must be taken before arrival of chicks. She

stressed on cleaning and preparation of brooding area before arrival of

chicks. She told the participants regarding main objectives of the

preparation of shed before arrival of chicks.

2nd session was continued by Dr. Inam. He discussed the brooding

requirements for chicks. He kept the participants engaged in practical along

with asking telling. His main focus was on fulfillment of these requirements

and its limitations regarding brooding.

Brooding area was calculated by the farmers themselves under the

supervision of Dr. Naila Imtiaz. The participants were divided in to two

groups for future practical demonstrations. The trainees were told about the

shape of brooder i.e. circle type or ring shape. They were told about the

reason behind the ring shape brooding as it protects chicks from huddling

in the corners. Each group prepared the brooding ring by themselves as

learning by doing is our main training methodology. The session was very

interesting and informative for the farmers as they had learnt very new

practices in poultry farming. The farmers took keen interests in the

activities of the day.

DAY-5

The farmers were divided in to two groups and each group was assigned a

separate brooder and chicks rearing and management. The farmers were

asked to prepare brooding ring for second group. They did with their own

hands under the supervision of Dr. Naila Imtiaz.

In the second session Dr. Fazale Raziq Durrani discussed about brooding

chicks management on day 1st. He shared the technicalities and steps that

should be taken in brooding management when chicks arrive at the farm.

The learned resource person also told the participants that how to manage

feeder on day first. He also discussed with the trainees the feeding space

area, cleaning of feeder, quantity of feed in feeder and number of feeders

required.

The last session was on drinker management. Mr.Mushtaq was the

resource person. He taught to the trainees the know-how of feeder

management. He thoroughly discussed the management of drinker like

water quality, number of drinkers, space of drinkers, water level in drinker

and filling of drinker from water etc. He asked the trainees to do the

practice to achieve perfection in drinker management. The learning by

doing was exercised in the session.

DAY-6

The day was started with feeder management. The farmers were asked to

practice all the relevant steps of feeder management with their own hands.

Mr. Mushtaq supervised the trainees and they did what they learnt previous

day regarding feeder management. After that the participants of the training

were asked to practice drinker management. The farmers took keen

interest in the session as they were working with their own hands while

Mr. Mushtaq was just supervising them.

Dr. Saeed Ullah Khan another well-known Master Trainer of LTC started

his session. He started the session with the discussion about feeding and

watering space standards according to different climatic conditions. He

shared advanced practices of feeding and watering with the farmers. He

also emphasized on proper feeding management as it cost up to 70% of

Poultry farming.

He also mentioned different space standards for round and long drinkers

and feeders. The session was based on group discussion, asking telling

technique and participatory approach that is why the farmers highly

appreciated it.

DAY-7

Prof: Dr. Fazale Raziq Durrani elaborated various climatic standards for

poultry farming in general and broiler farming in particular in his session.

He discussed different managemental tools that should be adopted in

different climatic conditions.

The same resource person in his second lecture discussed the bio-security

measures in broiler poultry farming. His lecture mainly covered isolation of

diseased birds and their culling, traffic control, adoption of various bio-

security measures, strictly following the bio-security measures inside and

outside of the farm.

Dr. Inam demonstrated the watering of chicks. As the chicks were planned

to be arrived on day 6, but unfortunately the 28th July Floods in KP blocked

all the linked roads to Peshawar for more than four days. Due to that

natural calamity the chicks could not reached in time. But the participants

practiced the watering of chicks on the farm in absence of chicks.

In the next session Mr. Mushtaq lecturer Poultry Sciences Department

asked the participants to practice the feeding of chicks. They were asked to

practically perform the measurements of feeding troughs. They also did

calculation of different feeding troughs for different ages of birds.

Later on Mr.Mushtaq told the significance of record keeping. The trainees

were briefed about the proper record keeping. The learned resource

person also discussed various components of record keeping. He also

discussed various types of record keeping. The whole day was very

interactive and informative for the trainees.

DAY-8

The day was started with the lecture of Dr. Muhammad Israr, the resource

person who had years of experience in poultry farm management and

handling of poultry health related issues. The expert discussed the

importance of record keeping in practical poultry farming. He also provided

various patterns of record keeping.

In the next session Mr. Mushtaq performed day to day management

practices in the farm. The participants were asked to note the shed

temperature, ventilation, light and other relevant parameters. They were

practiced that how to enter a farm following full bio-security measures. The

farmers did the recordings and noted in their note books.

Dr. Inam gave assignments to the trainees for practical record keeping.

The participants were divided in to various groups and each group was

asked to make proforma for record keeping. Then each group presented its

group work.

Dr. Khalid Khan a Poultry Expert from the field was requested by LTC to

participate in the training as resource person that the trainees could learn

more knowledge and skill regarding applied poultry sciences. His session

was on “reducing feed cost in broilers”. He stressed on selection of

good quality chicks, separation of smaller chicks from the normal flock,

provision of quality feed, proper feeding management as well as proper

feeder management. He told the trainees that if they could focus on all the

above parameters then they would be able to reduce feed cost in their

broiler farming. The session was based on practical demonstrations which

the farmers highly appreciated.

DAY-9

On this day chicks for demonstration arrived to the farm. Mr. Mushtaq

started day 1st management of chicks. He asked the participants to do the

chicks management with their own hands. The trainees did chicks

counting, shifting of chicks from boxes to brooding area and weighting of

chicks etc under the supervision of Mr. Mushtaq.

Later on Dr. Hasnain discussed the health signs and made aware the

trainees about the tips through which they could judge their flock whether it

is healthy or not. He also told about the major signs of a disease in a flock

in order to enable the trainees to observe disease in their flock

instantaneously.

Mr. Mushtaq gave lecture on the effects of toxic gases in the poultry shed.

He discussed various causes of production of these toxic gases in a poultry

shed. The learned resource person also told the correcting remedies for

these gases. He also taught different preventive measures to control toxic

gases production in a poultry shed.

Then the session was followed by practical demonstration regarding control

of various toxic gases in a poultry shed. The trainers applied hands on

training approach in the session. The participants practiced all the control

measures on farm.

DAY-10

The day was started from the session of Dr. Muhammad Israr in which the

expert discussed FCR, its importance, and its calculation. He also informed

the participants regarding standard values of Feed Consumption Ratio for

comparing their values with the standard values. The session was quite

informative.

In the second session Dr. Naila Imtiaz started day to day management

practices at farm. She supervised the trainees and they performed all the

management including flock observation, record keeping, watering and

feeding etc. She also discussed about the seasonal management of

Poultry Shed and various managemental practices for poultry farm

management in different seasons.

Mr. Mushtaq discussed about the managemental causes of diseases in a

poultry farm. He elaborated various causes and stressed on proper

management. The resource person sensitized the trainees that their minor

negligence can cause severe disease outbreak at the farm.

In the last session of the day Dr. Mashooq Ali told the farmers about

vaccination schedule for broilers. He composed vaccination Schedule with

the help of the participants’ for the current flock at the demonstrative farm.

Day-11

The day was started with the day to day management on farm. Dr. Inam

facilitated the farmers at the farm and they performed day to day

management with their own hands.

The second resource person of the day was Dr. Naila Imtiaz. She

discussed about vaccines that covered principles, nature of vaccines,

limitations in vaccines and types of vaccines. The theory session was

followed by Vaccination practical. The participants were told about the

procedure of preparation and administration of NDV in 1st week of chicks.

The trainees were asked to prepare the vaccine for administration. When

they did with their own hands then members of each group were asked to

vaccinate chicks against Newcastle Disease. The trainees performed the

vaccination with learning by doing technique.

Later on Dr. Hasnain presented an informative discussion on IBD

(Gamboro Disease). He explained the cause, signs and symptoms of the

disease. He also pointed the organs where the lesions of the disease can

be observed on post mortem examination. The trainees were eager to

learn about the disease as it causes huge mortality in a farm whenever

occurs.

DAY -12

The day was started with day to day management practices in which

routine managemental practices like flock observation, record keeping,

watering and feeding of chicks etc were done by the trainees in supervision

of Dr. Muhammad Inam.

Dr. Mashooq Ali an expert in Poultry Health in his session discussed about

Newcastle Disease. He explained the cause; transferring and spreading of

the disease along with signs and symptoms in live as well as dead birds.

He also discussed the control strategies of the disease.

Similarly another resource person Dr. Shahid Zaman briefed the trainees

regarding Salmonellosis which also known as Fowl Typhoid and discussed

different aspects of the disease.

In this session the learned resource person Dr. Mashooq Ali presented

details regarding Omphalitis and discussed various diagnostic points of the

disease. He told the participants that how they can prevent and control the

disease in their flock. They were also told about the management during

the occurrence of the disease in the farm.

The last session was attended by Prof: Dr. Muhammad Subhan Qureshi a

well-known Scientist and currently chairman of the department of Livestock

Management. He explained to the farmers the current scenario regarding

White meat and international marketing channels for white meat marketing.

He stressed on value addition and branding of meat especially white meat

to make more profits. The learned Professor told the farmers that

internationally people pay more for quality rather than quantity that is why

the farmers should focus on quality farming.

DAY-13

Day to day management practices at farm was performed by trainees in

supervision of Dr. Saeed Ullah Khan. The learned Instructor demonstrated

to the trainees very important points in management. He taught them, how

to check the moisture in the litter, how to maintain shed temperature and

what are the proper techniques of feeding and drinking of chicks.

Dr. Zakir Hussain briefed the participants regarding CRD its causes, signs

and symptoms. He also explained the possible treatment of disease.

Dr. Saeed Ullah Khan discussed the two most occurring diseases of

broilers which are colibacillosis and ascites. He stressed on precautionary

measures to prevent the diseases as usually ascites causes huge losses in

form of chick’s mortality in District Swat.

The second most important disease HPS or Hydro pericardium Syndrome

cause huge mortality in broilers. The farmers were made aware regarding

the disease by our Resource Person Dr. Zakir Hussain. The resource

person explained all aspects of the disease including cause, signs and

symptoms in live and dead birds etc.

DAY-14

Daily routine management practices at farm were performed by the

trainees under the supervision of Dr. Mashooq Ali. Later on Dr. Mashooq

Ali demonstrated anatomy of chicken. The aim of the session was to

enable the participants that they can identify various organs and parts of

chicken which is helpful in post mortem examination. The trainer

demonstrated each and every gross organ of chicken to the trainees in

reference to its local names and importance in disease identification.

In the next session Dr. Hasnain discussed different marketing channels in

poultry marketing. He taught the importance of planning and strategies for

successful marketing.

In the last session of the day Dr. Naila Imtiaz an expert in poultry Sciences

made aware the participants regarding role of different herbs and medicinal

plants in growth and disease control in broiler. She discussed in detail

important herbs and plants their characteristics and administration in

broilers. The farmers were very enthusiastic to learn about it.

DAY-15

On this day Mr. Mushtaq was the resource person for the first session. He

briefed the participants regarding IBD Vaccination in chicks. He also

discussed about the schedule of the IBD vaccination. The session was

incorporated with various questions of the farmers regarding Gamboro

Disease.

Prof: Dr. Naila Imtiaz discussed about the feasibility of a broiler poultry

farm. She taught the participants that how they will make feasibility of a

poultry farm when they want to start a poultry farm. She also threw light on

the significance of feasibility. Later on she gave home assignments to the

trainees and they were asked to prepare feasibility report of 1000 broiler

chicks and then present in the class room.

During the session monitoring team of Pakistan Jobs Project reached to

the venue and evaluated the training. They highly appreciated the training

standards and methodology. They specially appreciated the practical

oriented aspects of the training.

In the last session the trainees performed their routine duty i.e. day to day

management practice at farm under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad

Inam.

DAY-16

Day to day management at farm was performed by the trainees under the

supervision of Dr. Muhammad Inam. They noted record of the flock and

perform various management practices like watering, feeding, flock

observation etc.

In the second session Dr. Mashooq Ali discussed Coccidiosis disease in

flock with the trainees. He informed the farmers regarding causative agent

of the disease, types of the disease, its clinical signs and symptoms and

postmortem lesions. He also told the possible treatment of the disease and

preventive measures of Coccidiosis in birds.

Dr. Hasnain was the last resource person of the day. He told the trainees

about various marketing channels for poultry marketing. He tried to incline

the farmers to self-marketing. Different strategies were chalked out for

successful poultry marketing. The session was mostly based on asking

telling technique.

DAY-17

Dr. Mashooq Ali guided the trainees in day to day management practices at

farm. The trainees did flock observation, flock record. Temperature and

other parameters were checked by the trainees.

In the next session Dr. Khalid Khan discussed about Post Mortem

Examination. He demonstrated the post mortem examination to the farmers

of each group on dead birds. Each group observed the whole procedure

and practically participated in the post mortem examination of these birds.

The session was based on practical demonstration assisted by asking

telling technique both from the resource person and participants.

Dr. Hasnain discussed various marketing strategies. He also gave home

assignments to the trainees on poultry marketing.

Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib Dean FAHVS took keen interest and evaluated the

training at various stages. He visited the venue along with Dr. Naila Imtiaz

and evaluated the training. The trainees presented their home assignments

on farm feasibility and Dr. Habib asked various questions regarding their

homework. The learned Professor highly appreciated the work of these

trainees. Then Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib asked various questions from the

participants in previous topics to know if any deficiency or short coming

exists. In last Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib expressed his full satisfaction over

the standards of the training. He also appreciated the work done by the

trainers during the training and strong determination of LTC.

DAY-18

An excursion visit to the Veterinary Research Institute Peshawar was the

part of Course Curriculum. The management of LTC did all the necessary

arrangements and VRI concerned staff was available for facilitation of

these trainees. The trainees were brought to the institute by the University

Bus in supervision of Dr. Muhammad Inam, where Dr. Zakir Hussain HRM

LTC welcomed the participants at the entrance gate. Dr. Willayat Hussain

In charge Poultry Division VRI gave a tour around the Poultry division to

the trainees. He gave full information of all the relevant facilities regarding

Poultry in VRI for the farmers.

Then Dr. Khalid Khan in charge Post Mortem Section gave a detail account

on post mortem examination in poultry farming. The section was one of the

busy sections of the institute having tens of post mortem cases daily. Dr.

Khalid performed post mortem examination on dead birds brought by

various farmers of the adjacent districts of Peshawar. The trainees took

keen interest in this post mortem and were very excited when they

observed all the clinical signs and lesions of diseases in those dead birds.

The treatment prescribed by the learned Poultry Expert was also shared

with them.

The whole day was very fruitful and informative for the young Poultry

farmers of District Swat.

DAY-19

Day to day Management Practices were performed by the trainees in

supervision of Dr. Muhammad Israr. He also assessed the trainees for

accuracy. In his session he explained the techniques of reducing the

humidity in a shed.

Dr. Noor Muhammad a well experienced personality in Poultry sciences

was requested to spare some time and share his experiences with the

trainees. He informed the trainees about the endemic flu in birds and its

consequences in case of outbreak. He also discussed various respiratory

diseases and their similarities with Endemic flu. The learned Resource

Person also mentioned the points on which differential diagnosis is

possible.

Later on Dr. Hasnain attended his session. The trainees presented their

home assignment on Poultry Marketing in the class. The instructor pointed

out the shortcomings and guided the trainees in marketing. Dr. Hasnain

appreciated the work done by the trainees.

DAY-20

Dr. Zakir Hussain started day to day management at farm along the

trainees. The trainees checked house temperature, moisture content in

litter, feeding and watering of chicks besides flock observation and record

keeping.

In the next session the resource person Dr. Khalid Khan an expert of

Poultry especially in post mortem examination imparted skill of post

mortem examination to the trainees. He first discussed importance of post

mortem examination, its procedure and techniques. Then the learned

instructor demonstrated post mortem examination and pointed out various

organs and their importance in disease diagnosis.

In the last session of the day the farmers had to perform farm duty. They

were asked to manage watering and feeding of chicks without the

supervision of facilitator/instructor. The aim of the activity was to make the

trainees more bold and decision maker on their own behalf.

DAY-21

Vaccination for Hydro pericardium Syndrome was to be carried out but due

late arrival of the chicks could not performed, so general discussion about

hydro pericardium was given by Muhammad Mushtaq. He also gave

general discussion regarding broiler farming.

Dr. Sher Alam supervised the daily routine practices of the farmers. He

stressed on proper managemental practices through which the disease can

be prevented. Then the farmers performed the farm duty in the supervision

of course coordinator.

He also discussed the methodology with trainees through which general

observations of the flock can be performed that whether it’s healthy or

some problem exists in the flock

Hence most of the activities were performed by the trainees and they were

kept busy at the daily practices.

DAY-22

Daily routine practices were performed by the trainees in the supervision of

Dr. Mohammad Israr. The practices were observed by him and suggestions

for its improvement were given.

Chick grading were also taught by Dr. Muhammad Israr. He told the tips

through which one can differentiate between the chicks whether the chick

is Grade A or Grade B. Flock observation was performed and discussed

with the trainees for practical experience.

Then the farm duty was conducted by the trainees participating in different

farm activities. Thus the day was mostly practical and the trainees gave

their full time.



DAY-23

Trainees performed the daily routine practices at the farm in the

supervision of course coordinator then the farmers were taught about the

practices through which immunity against disease are developed. He

mentioned all the tips including vaccination through which the immunity

against the diseases could be maintained. The facilitator for the session

was Dr. Muhammad Inam.

The economic analysis of the group work of the trainees were performed &

discussed by Dr. Naila Imtiaz. She arranged presentations of the trainees

on the current group analysis. She calculated the feed conversion ratio of

the experimental flock

Thus the trainees were kept busy in the practical works and their

participation was highly appreciated. The trainees were quite happy for

their encouragement.

DAY-24

Day to day management practices at farm were done by the trainees and

Mr. Muhammad Inam supervised them. The training participants observed

flock status, did record keeping and practice watering and feeding of

chicks.

As it was the 2nd last day of the training, the trainees had to be evaluated

in both practical and theory of what they learnt. Dr. Naila Imtiaz and Mr.

Mushtaq were the examiners. First was viva session, the examiners

asked about various practical procedures from the trainees one by one.

They were asked to explain the practice verbally and then demonstrate it.

The trainees showed confidence and demonstrated each tool and practice

they had been asked for.

In the last session of the day the trainees took examination paper prepared

by LTC from the course curriculum. The exam duty was performed by Mr.

Mushtaq and Dr. Muhammad Inam. A proper examination discipline was

applied during the paper and the trainees attempted their papers 100%.

DAY-25

The day was started with course evaluation by Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib. He

gave a proforma to the trainees and they were asked to assess, the course

contents, training methodology, trainers approach and practical

demonstration. The participants appreciated all aspects of the training in

general and practical demonstrations in particular, in their written remarks.

Then the closing ceremony was started in the Video Conference Room of

the Agricultural University Peshawar. The Chief Guest for the ceremony

was the worthy Vice Chancellor KP Agricultural University Peshawar Prof:

Dr. Khan Bahadur Marwat. The event was attended by Prof: Dr. Ghulam

Habib Dean FAHVS, Dr. Naila Imtiaz, Dr. Shaukat Khan Program Director

LTC, and Dr. Ihsanullah Livestock Officer PJP Lasoona, Mr. Iftikhar Uddin

Director KP Pakistan Jobs Project, Mr. Asad Ali NRM Coordinator

PaRRSA, Mr. Asad PJP, and Mr. Hakim Khan Agriculture Sector Specialist

Pakistan Job Project.

The formal ceremony was started with the recitation of the Holly Quran by

a participant of the training. Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib presented course

overview. He appreciated the zeal and interest of the trainees. He also

applauded the efforts of all the resource persons in general and Dr. Naila

Imtiaz, Mr.Mushtaq and Dr. Muhammad Inam in particular.

Dr. Shaukat Khan Program Director LTC in his remarks paid thanks to the

worthy Vice Chancellor for his keen interest in such like developmental

activities. He also extended his gratitude to Prof: Dr. Ghulam Habib for his

full support and encouragement in the training. He also appreciated the

learning thirst of these young Poultry Farmers. The PD LTC offered free on

farm visits to the farms of those trainees.

Dr. Ihsan Ullah representative of Lasoona Organization appreciated the

efforts of LTC and AUP staff in successful conduction of the training. He

also lauded the efforts of Program Director LTC for his provision of all the

possible facilities to the participants during the training.

Mr. Asad Ali NRM Coordinator PaRRSA briefed the audience about role of

PaRRSA. He stressed on coordinating efforts for poverty alleviation and

rural development.

Mr. Iftikhar Uddin Director KP Program of PJP appreciated the role of LTC

and AUP in conduction of a practical oriented training. He assured his

possible help to the trainees in their placement to earn better livelihood. He

also extended his special thanks to the Chief Guest for his full support and

encouragement.

The Chief Guest of the event, Prof: Dr. Khan Bahadur Vice Chancellor in

his address appreciated the joint collaboration of LTC and FAHVS. He

stressed on skill development and offered facilities of the University for this

purpose. The Chief Guest advised the trainees to keep liaison with the

university for future guidance.

Later on the Chief Guest distributed Course Completion Certificates among

the training participants. The Program Director LTC also presented

distinction certificate to the top three position holders among the trainees.

Vote of thanks was paid by Assistant Prof: Dr. Naila Imtiaz and a group

photo of the participants was taken with the honorable guests.
