Definitions In the context of this assessment, project means a small-scale project completed under the guidance of a project coordinator.

The principles of the Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa (YSDA) include:

being shaped by the bigger picture.

helping youth make positive connections.

promoting a consistent strengths-based approach.

promoting quality relationships.

triggering youth participation.

quality information processes.

The characteristics and needs of young people may be physical, spiritual, or mental. Characteristics include: age and stage of development, coping strategies, culture, disabilities, experience and knowledge, gender, health status, personal history, language, sexual orientation, socio-economic situation, risk and resiliency factors. Needs include physical comfort, safety and privacy.

Essential factors may include but are not limited to: needs, aims, objectives, implementation, method and evaluation. People awarded credit for this unit standard demonstrate competence in one context, with any combination of the above factors.

Project coordinator refers to the person who oversees the planning, implementation and evaluation of the project.

In this context, relevant criteria may be selected from a variety of sources, including a code of ethics of a youth development organisation, a UN convention and legislation.

Safety includes protocols for risk management, occupational safety and health and confidentiality.

Youth/young people are people between 12 and 24 years of age.

The youth development sector is a situation where youth development practice is being used intentionally to promote positive development of young people. Examples include education, sport, community development, religious groups, cultural groups and interest groups.

Youth worker is the person seeking to be awarded credit for these unit standards.

Assessment note

Assessment tasks must be completed in accordance with the principles of the YDSA and the Code of Ethics for Youth Work in Aotearoa New Zealand.

People awarded credit for this unit standard demonstrate competence in a small-scale project under the guidance of a project coordinator.

The person being assessed against this unit standard is expected to assist in the project under the guidance of a project coordinator.

What you need to do For this assessment you are required to prepare and deliver an oral presentation that shows how you assisted with the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of a youth development project. You will also provide written answers for part of Task 4.

For assessment you need to:

collect and submit a portfolio of evidence showing that you helped to plan, develop, deliver and evaluate a youth development project.

give an oral presentation to your assessor to support your portfolio of evidence.

get your assessor to verify that you have completed these tasks with competence.

What is a project?

In this context, a project is a small-scale project carried out under the professional supervision of a project coordinator. For example, a project could be an issue-based workshop, a holiday programme, a youth week initiative, or another project identified by young people, the community or your organisation. Your project coordinator could be a senior youth worker or other authorised person.

Assisting with a project

Your presentation needs to show how you assisted with:

project planning.

development of the project.

delivery and evaluation of the project.

risk management planning.

You will prepare a detailed presentation of your work, supported by a portfolio of evidence and verification of your work from a supervisor to complete this assessment. You will also provide written answers for the assessment of risk management in Task 4.

Other points to note

Your presentation may be done in any size, shape or form. For example, it could be a low-

key discussion, a slide show, or be supported by posters, pamphlets, displays or diagrams.

You may support your presentation with visual aids such as photos, graphics and images.

You may choose to use technology to give your presentation from a distance if this has

been agreed with your assessor.

The assessor may ask you additional questions.

This assessment contains an evidence checklist for you to use when preparing your

presentation. Give this checklist to your assessor before you begin your presentation.

Preparing for your presentation

Collect a portfolio of evidence

Collect workplace evidence as you assist a project coordinator or authorised person with the planning and development of their project. This will be the evidence that demonstrates you are able to assist others with the successful delivery of a youth development project.

Collect and attach your portfolio of evidence to this assessment to show that you helped to plan, develop, deliver and evaluate a youth development project.

Supporting evidence you may want to provide could include:

a copy of your job description and summary of your role in the organisation. a written summary of the need for the project. documented aims and objectives of the project key issues for the project. documented special needs of project participants, staff or volunteers. data and information that is relevant to the project. information on local community organisations and regional services if relevant to the

project. a copy of an information letter and health and consent forms for the project. notes from meetings with workers and/or young people and community representatives. approval from your line manager to assist with the development of the project. documented leadership and staffing ratios. media reports or social media updates that might be relevant to the project. session plans and evaluation forms if relevant to developing the profile. documented feedback, questionnaires, surveys or interviews with young people and

community representatives, if relevant to the project. monthly reports, photographs or meeting minutes. a copy of a reflective journal or narrative of a conversation(s) you had. attestation/verification forms. other relevant items of evidence.

Note: The evidence checklist on page 10 of this guide provides a list of workplace evidence that could be used for your presentation and this assessment.

You can use your portfolio of evidence to support your presentation. Read through the requirements for your presentation (see Tasks 1 to 3) so you know what you need to include in the evidence that you collect for your portfolio. Ensure the evidence you collect supports your presentation. Assemble your evidence in the order in which you refer to it in your presentation. Label each page of the evidence with your name and number.

Remember to follow your organisation’s guidelines for confidentiality.

This assessment needs to be verified by an appropriate supervisor. Your verifier needs to complete the verification form provided with this assessment. This will assist in guaranteeing the authenticity of your assessment.
