A devastating tragedy and a very embarrassing situation for the highly reputable Lufthansa Group.

Andreas Lubitz, 28, a first officer, he had been flying for ger-manwings since Sep-tember 2013 after being trained with the airline’s parent company Lufthansa at its Bremen facility. He had clocked up a total of 630 hours in the air.

Airbus celebrates delivery of its 9,000th aircraft

Airbus has celebrated the delivery of its 9000th aircraft at a ceremony in Hamburg, Germany on 20th March 2015. The aircraft is the first A321 to be delivered to Vietnamese carrier VietJetAir and will join the carrier’s all-Airbus A320 Family fleet flying on its fast-growing Asia-Pacific network. VietJetAir first took to the skies at the end of 2011 and now operates a fleet of 22 A320 Family aircraft on a network covering Vietnam and a growing number of destinations across Asia. The A321 delivered is the first of seven ordered by the airline as part of a major aircraft acquisition plan for up to 100 A320 Family aircraft an-nounced in early 2014.

Bombardier delivers first Learjet 75 air-craft to be operated out of Poland

Bombardier has delivered its first Learjet 75 aircraft to an undisclosed customer based in Poland following certification by the authori-ties of the country’s Civil Aviation Authority. “Learjet has a heritage than spans more than 50 years and remains a standard for high-per-forming business jets,” said Valeria Kolyuchaya, Regional Vice President, Sales, Eastern Europe, Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Bombardier Business Aircraft. “We are confident the Learjet 75 aircraft will provide customers in Poland with an experience that exceeds all expectations.”

AEI commences third MD-80SF Freighter Conversion for Aeronaves

Aeronautical Engineers reported that the third MD-80SF freighter conversion for Aeronaves T.S.M. (TSM) has commenced modification at Commercial Jet’s Miami, Florida facility, which is one of five authorized AEI Conversion Centers worldwide. The MD-83 variant aircraft (MSN 49558) will be the third MD-80SF conversion for TSM. TSM currently operates two AEI MD-80SF freighters.

ropean airlines including germanwings, but several airlines across Europe are now im-plementing new cockpit safety procedures.

Also, US scheduled airline pilots must have a first class medical certificate. The pilot must renew the certificate every year if the pilot

is under 40 years old, every six months if the pilot is 40 years old or older.

Carsten Spohr, managing director of german-wings defended pilots at his airline fiercely saying, “We have full confidence in our pilots, so this is totally incomprehensible.”

Investigators are now trying to figure out why the co-pilot would deliberately crash an air-craft. Early indications are pointing to mental illness and depression, of which it seems, he hid from the airline which in itself could be the most puzzling part of this tragedy.

ibility, which is critical during flight operations of the S-97 RAIDER helicopter because of its speed and performance capabilities,” Wright said. “PPG wanted that visibility maintained as long as possible, so we designed a new coat-ings system for improved haze and scratch re-sistance.” Using polycarbonate enabled PPG to provide the optimum balance between high strength and light weight for the windshields, he said. The windshields have passed testing

to resist impact of a 2.2-pound bird at the de-manding high speeds of the RAIDER aircraft. PPG also designed acrylic cockpit and cabin-door windows and stretched-acrylic lower observation windows for strength and light weight. PPG is designing and manufacturing the transparencies at its Sylmar, California, facility, and has delivered ship sets to Sikorsky for two S-97 RAIDER helicopter prototypes.

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS MTU Aero Engines develops new turbine blade material

MTU Aero Engines’ materials experts and their partners have jointly developed a new class of unique, intermetallic high-temperature materials for highly stressed engine com-ponents: Titanium aluminide (TiAl) is the name of the new lightweight material for turbine blades that combines the advantages of metallic and ceramic materials, offering the best of both worlds. The job was done in record time. “While previously, the introduction of a new material used to take 20 years or so, we’ve suc-ceeded in coming up with an entirely new material class and maturing it for production within a mere seven years,” commented MTU Chief Operating Of-ficer Dr. Rainer Martens. The hardware is already flightworthy: Back in late September of last year, an Airbus A320neo was the first aircraft ever to take to the skies with custom-made TiAl blades installed in its engines; certification was then obtained last December. The blades in the new material are fitted to the third rotor stage of the unique, three-stage, high-speed low-pressure turbine developed by MTU for the geared turbofan engine for the A320neo. Research continues unabated: The materials experts are busy developing an enhanced TiAl alloy. Their aim is to make more turbine stages from the new material. The innovation would be good news for the envi-ronment – for TiAl allows engines to be built that use up less resources, burn less fuel, and are cleaner and quieter than today’s models. “I’m sure that this material will help further bring down the weight of engines appreciably,” adds Martens.

China Eastern selects Rockwell Collins’ advanced avionics systems for 20 Next-Gen B737 aircraft

China Eastern has selected Rockwell Col-lins’ advanced avionics systems, including its Head-up Guidance System (HGS) and Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR), for 20 new Next-Gen-eration Boeing 737 aircraft. Deliveries will begin early next year. Rockwell Collins’ HGS displays critical flight information in pilots’ forward field-of-view, eliminating the need for pilots to transition to the head-down in-struments. As a result, pilots can keep their attention focused on the outside world, en-hancing overall situational awareness and safety. HGS also provides airlines with cost savings from fewer diversions by enabling more takeoffs and landings in low-visibility conditions.

Finnair’s Board of Directors has approved an approximately €80m (US$88m) investment in a brand new cargo terminal to be built at Helsinki Airport. The construction work of the new 35,000 m² terminal will start in March 2015. The capacity of the new ter-minal has been planned according to the increasing cargo capacity offered by the Airbus A350 XWB fleet, and it will include special cargo handling areas for pharmaceu-tical and life science products (Pharma) as well as perishable products, including fish and seafood. The new state-of-the-art ter-minal will have high level of warehouse au-tomation to ensure high quality air freight service and competitive handling cost. The terminal’s location was defined to optimize the ground transport from cargo terminal to wide-body aircraft stands at Helsinki Airport, and is planned to be opened during spring 2017 near Finnair Technical Operations area (future address Turbiinitie). Finnair cargo operations will continue in Rahtitie 1 until spring 2017, when they are transferred to the new cargo terminal. The new cargo ter-minal is the second largest investment at

an and elsewhere, for qualified people with aircraft maintenance skills. At the end of the training, students will be equipped to take their License Without Type Rating (LWTR) examination administered by the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), and will also be qualified to work as Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, not only in Anti-gua and Barbuda, but all over the world. LIAT will have the first option of employing the best and brightest of the graduates.

Finnair Board of Directors has approved an investment program for bringing Wi-Fi con-nectivity to the majority of Finnair’s wide-body and narrow-body fleet. The total value of the investment is approximately €30m ($US33m). “This investment will enable us to offer a wide array of new services to our customers, ranging from inflight entertain-ment to inflight sales and ancillaries”, says Pekka Vauramo, Finnair CEO. Finnair will introduce its first onboard Wi-Fi service in autumn 2015, with the arrival of the first Finnair A350 XWB aircraft. In 2016, the com-pany will start Wi-Fi installations in Finnair’s Airbus A330 long-haul aircraft as well as its European short-haul Airbus fleet. Installa-

First two Indian Mirage 2000 I/TIs delivered to Indian Authorities

The acceptance ceremony of the first two Indian Air Force Mirage 2000 I/TIs was held at Istres, Dassault Aviation’s Flight Test Centre on March 25th. The signing of the contract for the upgrade of Indian Mirage 2000 fleet occurred in July 2011. The maiden flight of its first upgraded Mirage 2000 was completed successfully by Dassault Aviation on the 5th October 2013 following a two year development phase dedicated to the equipment kit provided by Thales including the radar, the electronic warfare suite and the mission computer. Technologically ambitious and based on the integration of the latest generation equipment and systems, the first phase of the programme was completed on schedule in France. The rest of the fleet will be upgraded in Bangalore under the responsibility of HAL, with the complete support and involvement of Dassault Aviation and Thales teams. This programme serves the strategic requirements of the “Make in India” priority policy of the Indian Authorities.

Abu Dhabi Airports reported that passenger traffic at Abu Dhabi International Airport increased by 21.5% in February 2015. A to-tal of 1,715,540 passengers passed through Abu Dhabi International Airport during the month, compared with 1,411,881 in February 2014. There were 12,852 aircraft movements in February 2015, which was a 15% increase over February 2014’s figure of 11,174. Cargo activity comprised 64,067 tonnes handled at the airport’s three terminals in February 2015, a 12.6% increase when compared to February 2014.

With GE Aviation RNP’s service, China South-ern launched the first Required Navigation Performance flight including a route flown from Guangzhou-Linzhi-Guangzhou. GE Avia-tion designed procedures for China Southern Airlines’ fleet of Airbus A319s at Linzhi. The 95-mile approach into the airport is consid-ered to be one of the most challenging com-mercial jetliner landings. Without RNP, Linzhi is only accessible 100 days a year, in daylight, due to adverse weather conditions. In 2008, GE assisted China Southern in implementing RNP solutions at Lhasa airport, validating the Airbus A319 and A330 aircraft.

Chief Executive Officer David Evans, from LIAT, the Caribbean Airline, signed a Memo-randum of Understanding with Antigua State College (ASC) for an Engineering Technician Training Programme in Aircraft Maintenance. Other industry partners in the new pro-gramme, which commenced in September 2014, are Antigua-based Caribbean Helicop-ters; the College of the North Atlantic and the Marine Institute of Memorial Univer-sity, both based in Newfoundland, Canada. There are 26 apprentices enrolled in the programme and the ASC anticipates a maxi-mum of 15 new entrants every two years. Mr. Evans explained that a major component of the three-year programme will be on-the-job training and students will come to LIAT for practical hands-on training, while the theoretical aspects of the programme will be done at ASC. Engineers from LIAT’s Engi-neering and Maintenance Department will also serve as tutors for the programme. The students will be provided with on-the-job training during the second year of the pro-gramme, followed by a one-year internship at LIAT. The LIAT CEO said the programme came about as a result of a need to have a pool of skilled aircraft mechanics and engi-neers to support the airline’s Maintenance and Engineering Department, adding that there is a very high demand, in the Caribbe-
