Site Specific Highway Details
Description of character of the highway:
The C35 commences to the west of Shildon, at the junction with the A6072 West Auckland Road and the U42.3 Brusselton Lane.
The C35 travels east through Shildon and Middridge, before travelling north past Newton Aycliffe to Rushyford, where it
terminates at the junction with the A689.
Locally, the C35 Middridge Lane commences at the eastern outskirts of Shildon, at a point 166m east of the C189 Spout Lane
junction midpoint and travels east to the western outskirts of Middridge, to a point 60m west of The Meadows junction midpoint.
The C35 is a single carriageway 6.3m wide, comprising of one lane in either direction. Heading in a westerly direction from The
Meadows junction midpoint, the horizontal alignment comprises of a straight section, a right-hand bend, a left-hand bend, a right-
hand bend and a straight section. The vertical alignment in a westerly direction comprises of an uphill gradient to LC1838 and
then flattens out.
In a westerly direction between LC153 and LC1843, the 1.1m wide footway provision is located to the south of the carriageway
and the north of the carriageway is verge. Between LC1841 and LC157 the 1.3m wide footway provision is located to the north of
the carriageway and the south of the carriageway is verge. (Between LC153 and LC1829, the footway is segregated from the
carriageway by a 2m wide grass verge).
A public right of way adjoins the C35 Middridge Lane from the south of the carriageway in the vicinity of LC1842. Pedestrians
heading west from the footpath are required to cross the carriageway at this location to access the footway located on the other
side of the road. Pedestrians heading east are not required to cross the carriageway to access the footway.
The C35 Middridge Lane is a bus route but no bus stops are located within the extents of the site.
The site is subject to the national speed limit.
On this section of carriageway the road markings are in serviceable condition. The terminal speed limit signs are not in
serviceable condition.
Bend in the vicinity of LC1833 has bend warning signs and chevrons.
Description of environment of the highway:
The land to the north and south of the carriageway is rural / agricultural.
Specific / local knowledge comments relating to site and its environment:
The bend upon entering Middridge in the vicinity of ‘The Meadows’ has been subject to a scheme to prevent accidents,
particularly involving motorcyclists. The bend into Middridge was resurfaced to improve skid resistance properties.
Historic concerns about speeding through Middridge.
Potential development of land to the north and south of the C35 Middridge Lane.

Personal Injury Accident Data
• The PIA data is extracted from the Stats 19 records compiled by Durham Constabulary. These are validated by the
county council. Durham Constabulary forwards a copy of the validated data to Gateshead Council for use by the
Regional Road Safety Resource and Traffic Accident and Data Unit (TADU). The data is stored and disseminated by
use of the CIRTAS computer system developed and maintained by the TADU.
• The time period for the PIA data is the last 5 years available from 01/07/2010 to 30/06/2015
• The scope of the PIA data reviewed is the extents of the street lighting earmarked for removal; plus a further 50 metres
either side of the site except where this would be within 50metres of an adjacent junction.

Items Resulting from the Road Safety Review
Item: 1
Looking west, LC155, LC1829 and the terminal speed limit
gateway
Location:
C35 Middridge Lane
LC155 and LC1829
Description:
LC155 and LC1829 are located within the 30mph speed limit.
The proposed removal of LC155 and LC1829 will result in the 30mph speed limit being less conspicuous during the hours of
darkness; increasing the likelihood of eastbound vehicles failing to reduce their speed appropriately on entering Middridge.
Recommendation:
Retain street lighting columns LC155 and LC1829.
Item: 2
Looking west, two of the three uncontrolled pedestrian
crossing points (dropped kerbs)
Location:
C35 Middridge Lane
Between LC1841 and LC1843
Description:
In a westerly direction, between LC153 and LC1843 the footway provision is 1.1m wide and located to the south of the
carriageway and between LC1841 and LC157 the footway provision is 1.3m wide and located to the north of the carriageway.
Consequently, pedestrians walking between Shildon and Middridge have to cross the carriageway between LC1841 and
LC1843.
Recommendation:
Erect warning signs on the approaches to the staggered footways, to provide a warning to drivers that pedestrians could be
crossing the road ahead.
Cutback the vegetation on the north of the carriageway to ensure visibility sight lines for both pedestrians and the approach
traffic.
