March has “roared” right out of 2019! We are definitely “Springing” into April. This is the time of the year we are spending and enjoying more outside activities. Please make sure your child is wearing closed-toe shoes and his/her clothes are fitting appropriately. If you have any unwanted school uniforms, please donate them to school. HELP YOUR CHILD AVOID TEST ANXIETY When well‐meaning parents focus too much on test results, they put undue pressure on young children. For kids who

struggle with attention or memorization tasks, testing can be extremely stressful because it requires students to draw

entirely on these skills, and it can cause test anxiety.

Test anxiety is worrying too much about doing well on a test. Students with test anxiety can worry about success in

school and about their future success. They can become very self‐critical and lose confidence in their abilities. Instead

of feeling challenged by the prospect of success, they become afraid of failure. If your child worries too much about

taking tests, you can help to reduce the anxiety by encouraging the child to do the following things:

Read the directions carefully before beginning the test.

Ask the teacher to explain something he doesn't understand.

Look quickly at the entire text to see what types of questions are on it so that he can decide how much time to

spend on each question.

Mark questions that he doesn't know the answer to, skip them, and go on. Tell him if he has time at the end of the

test, to return to it and try again.

Don't get upset because of a single test score

AYUDE A SU HIJO A EVITAR LA ANSIEDAD POR CAUSA DE LOS EXAMINES

                HEADS UP ON CONCUSSIONS

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head. Even a mild blow can sometimes be serious. Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up immediately following the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If your child exhibits any signs of a concus‐sion or you suspect any symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

NEWS FROM THE NEST

Our kindergarten students are busy preparing to be first graders. Kindergartners will be expected to read more complex decodable texts fluently to be promoted to the next grade. You can help your child build reading fluency at home by having your child read daily. Kindergarteners should practice sight words to ensure they know the words from memory. As authors, kindergartners will build upon their knowledge of nonfiction text and write facts to teach their readers through their informative writings. Students will use the different mechanics of writing to help them develop their factual stories. In math, kindergartners will begin to learn about place value with tens and ones. Students use this knowledge to compose and decompose teen numbers. Mark your calendars for our end of year kindergarten celebration. It will be held on Friday, May 17th, 2019. More information will be sent home as the event ap-proaches. We look forward to seeing you at this special event!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!! With the arrival of April we benefit from beautiful weather and extended daylight hours, and Spring Fever. While we encourage everyone to spend quality time as a family enjoying the beautiful spring weather and extra daylight, we would also like to remind everyone to remain diligent with home-work. Upon returning from Spring Break we will continue with teaching and learning. We will continue with our Guidebooks Unit “The Ox-Cart Man” focusing on how life has changed over time. Second grade stu-dents should be reading a variety of text daily. Throughout the remainder of the nine weeks, we will be writing informational/explanatory text. Students should be able to gather information about a topic or take the information that they have learned and explain what they have learned in writing. With the conclusion of Module 7, students will have a better un-derstanding of graphs and money, as most importantly reading, understanding, and solving word problems. This is key for suc-cess in third grade. Module 8 will focus on time and fractions. In Science, we are learning about glaciers and how they demon-strate the states of matter. As always, thank you for your support and cooperation. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

Is my child ready for Kindergarten? If you would like answers to this question, check out the link below: https://www.louisianabelieves.com/docs/default-source/early-childhood/brochure---kindergarten-readiness-definition-(english).pdf?sfvrsn=5 http://www.leapfrog.com/en-us/learning-path/articles/kindergarten-skills-checklist.html Each give specific examples of what children should be exposed to in order to be “Kindergarten Ready.” You can also take advantage of the Pre-Kindergarten Fair offered by St. Charles Parish at the following locations and dates: New Sarpy Elementary School - April 6, 2019 any-time between 9:00 – 11:00. R.K. Smith Elementary School – May 4, 2019 any-

time between 9:00- 11:00.

Can you believe that Spring has arrived already? As always, our busy first graders continue to work so hard. For our final quarter we will be working on writing our opinions. Students will need to tell their opinion, give a reason for their opinion and provide a sense of closure. Students will also be working on writing informative stories. In math, we will be focusing on place value, comparing numbers and word problems up to 100. We will continue to use the RDW (Read, Draw, Write) strategy. Remind your students to read the problem and think about what they know. They then need to draw and label the picture as well as write a num-ber sentence and statement to prove their answer. In read-ing we will continue to read grade appropriate texts and identify the main idea and key details in the story. Practice at home by reading any book with your child and having them identify the important parts of the story. Thank you so much for continuing to be such wonderful partners in our students’ education and keep working hard!

NEWS FROM THE NEST

In ELA we are continuing in our Guidebook Unit revolving around the American Revolution. We will continue reading a variety of texts to help us better understand this time in history and the two sides of the conflict. In Social Studies, we will be entering our final unit of study, Unit 6: Impact of Technol-ogy. Our Mathematicians have been working hard in our Module 6 unit. We have taken our knowledge of fractions and applying it to decimals. We have converted fractions to decimals, placing decimals in order from least to greatest, comparing decimals, as well as adding decimals greater than one. We are wrapping up our unit in decimals this week and will begin to focus on Module 7. Continue to en-courage our students to review their notes and study their multiplication facts. Last but not least, our Scientists have been focusing on our newest phenomena and exploring how developing coun-tries now have more cell phone users than the world’s richer countries. The students are conduct-ing experiments to help them learn how electricity, energy, and light all contribute to this amazing phe-nomena! We are also looking forward to our two upcoming field trips.

During the month of April, your fifth grader will be focusing most of their time on the LEAP 2025 as-sessment. Please encourage your student to do their best and finish 5th grade strong. We will con-tinue to review/prepare for LEAP throughout the month. Students have finished their DARE Program. Those that completed their essay will be invited to attend the DARE field trip to a BabyCakes baseball game in May. More information about this and DARE graduation coming soon! You will also be getting information from Hurst Middle School to help students prepare for next year.

Woo hoo! The 4th quarter has arrived! Third grade students are wrapping up their unit on Be-cause of Winn-Dixie. Students are preparing for the Culminating Writing Task, which will be turned

in for a summative grade. Readers will then begin a novel study. The book we will read is The Lemonade War. As a class, we will have literature circles to discuss the chapters in depth.

In Social Studies, students are in the midst of Unit Five: Louisiana’s Future. We are specifically focusing on how our economy is impacted by our geography, and the positive and negative impacts of Louisiana changing over time.

We have begun our last module in math. Students will solve problems using all four operations. Also, we will be com-paring and classifying quadrilaterals and other polygons. The end of the module will focus on reviewing area and learning how to calculate perimeter. Scientists can look forward to “digging into” fossils! Students will analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the organisms and environments in which they lived long ago.

We are also preparing to take the LEAP at the end of April by taking practice tests and reviewing test-taking strate-gies. Practice assessments will be coming home soon for you to review with your child.

Norco's Daisy Troop 20469 (5 girls attend NES), Brownie Troop 20104 (7 girls attend NES), and Junior Troop 20179 (2 girls at-tend NES) all participated in this years Girl Scout Cookie Sales. Altogether they sold 11,194 boxes of cookies and donated 694 boxes of cookies to our Military Troops deploying in April. We are excited to say that one of our own made the top 5 sellers for our The Girl Scout Louisiana East Coun-cil, Eva Braud was #2.

Thank you to Electric Girls and our Partners-In-Education, Shell Manufacturing Complex, for another great after-school session. For the third after school session the girls were able to use circuits and other materials (popsicle sticks or construc-tion paper) to create their very own fans. The girls used wire cutters, batteries and other items in order to create the fans.
