TR52 (IADC 5-2-1)SOFT TO MEDIUM SOFT FORMATIONS

AMS TR52 designed for efficient drilling of soft to mediumformations such as shale, red bed, limestone and other strata of lowcompressive strength with hard streaks or abrasive properties. Thisdesign employs a maximum offset and features all chisel shaped tungstencarbide inserts which are spaced slightly farther apart than normal toinsure the highest possible rate of penetration. Ample hard facing onthe shirttail provides maximum protection against abrasion andinsures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operating weightsare 1,000 to 3,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter with correspondingrotary speeds of 200 to 50 RPM.

TR53 (IADC 5-3-1)MEDIUM SOFT FORMATIONS

The TR53 design utilizes the same cone structure as the TR52 but withall conical shaped inserts for efficient drilling in medium softformations such as shale, sandstone, and alluvial deposits. This designemploys the same maximum offset as the TR52; however, the conicalshaped inserts provide greater wear resistance in the harder formationsfor which the bit is designed to drill. Ample hard facing is applied tothe shirttail providing maximum protection against abrasion andinsures the longest possible bearing life. The most effective weightrange varies from 1,500 to 5,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, while rotary speeds of 175 to 50 RPM give best performance. Rotaryspeed should be decreased as weight is increased.

TR63 (IADC 6-3-1) MEDIUM HARD FORMATIONS

The TR63 is designed for medium hard formations that are semi-abrasivesuch as hard, sandy limestone, shale, dolomite and limestone withcherty streaks. This design features conical shaped tungsten carbideinserts on the gage rows to inhibit gage wear and chisel shapedinserts on the inner rows for maximum penetration.Gouging/scraping action is provided by cone offset. Ample hard facingon the shirttail provides maximum protection against abrasion andinsures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operatingweights are 1,500 to 6,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter with cor-responding rotary speeds of 140 to 55 RPM. Near the bit stabiliza-tion is recommended for maximum bit life.

TR64 (IADC 6-4-1)MEDIUM HARD TO HARDFORMATIONS

The TR64 is similar to the TR63 but with dome shaped tungsten carbideinserts on the gage rows and chisel shaped inserts on the inner rows forbest performance in tight and well cemented medium hard to hardformations such as abrasive limestone, sandstone and dolomite wheremaximum gage wear resistance is required. Ample hard facing is appliedto the shirttail providing maximum protection against abrasion andinsures the longest possible bearing life. Suggested operating weightsare 1,500 to 6,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, while rotary speedsof 140 to 55 RPM give best performance. Rotary speed should bedecreased as the weight is increased. Near the bit stabilization is alsorecommended for maximum bit life.

TR74 (IADC 7-4-1)MEDIUM HARD TO HARDFORMATIONS

The TR74 features a minimum offset cutting structure design and alldome shaped tungsten carbide inserts. It is designed to drill hard andabrasive formations such as quartzite, granite, cherty iron ores, andcopper porphyry. As with other AMS bit designs, this design featuresshirttail hard facing for maximum resistance to bearing wear. Thedrilling weights should range from 1,500 to 8,000 pounds per inch ofbit diameter. As drilling weights are increased the rotational speed, which ranges from 120 to 50 RPM, should be decreased. Near the bitstabilization is highly recommended for maximum bit life, and pulldown drills should be equipped with shock absorbers.

AMS insert bits are designed to provide afast rate of penetration, high durability andlong bit life. Each bit design represents aunique effort to provide the right selection ofinsert size, spacing, shape, hardness, protrusion, and material selection for use in different typesof rock formations. Computerdesigned insert bits give optimum results in thefield by eliminating tracking and off centerrotation. AMS offers a wide variety of typesof chisel, conical and spherical shaped tungstencarbide inserts, each uniquely designed fordrilling in specific types of rock formations.

TR3 (IADC 1-2-1) SOFT TO MEDIUM FORMATIONS

The TR3 is the fastest drilling bit supplied by AMS. This bitmodel is designed with long "A" shaped teeth, widely spacedand fully hardfaced from crest to root for maximum penetrationrates in formations that range from moderately soft tomedium soft. This design is most effective in formations withcompressive strengths under 5,000, such as shale, clay, redbed, medium limestone and unconsolidated formations. TheTR3 also features the absence of deletions on the gage side ofteeth on the heel row of the number two cone. This insuresmaximum gage life along with tooth life in more abrasiveformations. Effective operating weights are from 1,000 to3,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter with correspondingrotary speeds of 200 to 50 RPM

TR2 (IADC 2-1-1)MEDIUM TO MEDIUM HARDFORMATIONS

The TR2 offers the combination action of chipping, crushing, and gouging/scraping provided because of reduced cutter offset. The teeth are shorter "A" shaped and more closely spacedteeth than those of bits designed for softer formations. Longcrests in the outer row teeth have self-sharpening hardfacingapplied for maximum penetration and longer bit life. Thisdesign will most economically drill medium and medium hardformations and was designed to replace the softer formationbits in strata where shale alternates with streaks oflimestone and sandstone or where gypsum tends to ball upbetween the teeth. The most effective weight range variesfrom 1,000 to 5,000 pounds per inch of bit diameter, whilerotary speeds of 150 to 50 RPM give best performance.Rotary speed should be decreased as weight is increased.

TRIT (IADC 3-1-1)MEDIUM HARD TO HARDFORMATIONS

The TR1T operates best in hard, abrasive formations such ashard sandy limestone, limestone interspersed with chertystreaks, broken shale, dolomite, granite, and abrasive sand. This bit is especially constructed to withstand the stressesimposed in drilling hard formations under heavy weights. The gage teeth are "T" shaped and hard faced withtungsten carbide. There are no interruptions on the heelrow teeth and the inner row teeth are short and closelyspaced for maximum strength.

Other features include balanced bearing design and extra thickcone shells. The most economical bit performance is obtainedwith weights of 3,000 to 8,000 pounds per inch of bit diame-ter. Corresponding rotary speed should range between 100 and40 RPM. It is a recommended practice that the rotation speedshould decrease when increasing drilling weight.

TR1H (IADC 3-2-1)VERY HARD FORMATIONS

Hard, abrasive formations requiring maximum resistance togage wear are best drilled with the TR1H bit. The bit providesthe necessary chipping and crushing action on bottom anddrills efficiently in formations such as siliceous limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and granite. The gage surfaces of thecones have webs joining adjacent heel teeth, which insuresgreat resistance to wear. Inner row teeth are short andclosely spaced to withstand maximum stress. This bit isdesigned to drill most efficiently in hard formations withweights ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 pounds per inch of bitdiameter. Rotary speeds should decrease from 100 to 40 RPMas weight is increased.

SEALED ROLLER BEARING BITS

AMS supplies a line of sealed roller bearing bits for use in a variety of applicationswhere, historically, bearing life has been the limiting factor in bit performance. AMS sealed roller bearingbits, available in both steel tooth and tungsten carbide designs, offer extended bearing life to utilize the fulllife of the cutting structure.

The lubrication system for AMS sealed roller bearing bits consists of a grease reservoir with passages tothe bearings, a synthetic rubber diaphragm and a steel reservoir cap. The lubrication system equalizes theinternal and external pressure across the seal, which serves to increase seal life. A special factory appliedlubricant fills the bearing area, and the grease reservoir in the leg of the bit supplies additional grease to thebearings as needed.

The bearings are sealed using specially designed "O" Ring seals, made of Highly Saturated Nitrile (HSN) formaximum bearing protection and life. These seals are very effective in preventing the intrusion of the drillingfluid into the bearing system.
