TPT Coast to Coast

The Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) crosses northern England from the Mersey to the Humber running through the cities of Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull. It is a purpose-built route for walkers and cyclists with many miles available for horse riding and wheelchair access, wherever possible.

Mostly off-road, the TPT uses existing rights of way, riverbank paths, canal towpaths and disused railway lines. With its robust surfaces and generally gentle gradients, it is suitable for people of all ages and capabilities.

Call 01226 772574 or visit www.transpenninetrail.org.uk to order our maps and guide and discover more about this national route. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Trail offers a wide contrast of landscape from deep rural areas to river estuaries and towns and cities where former industrial sites have become woodlands and nature reserves.

Twenty seven local authorities are partners in the project and each authority is responsible for the management of the trail in its own area. The TPT is coordinated by a project officer based in Barnsley.

If you would like to venture further afield on the TPT or maybe even do the full coast to coast, route maps and an accommodation guide are available from the TPT head office.

in North Eastern DerbyshireChesterfield to Rother Valley Country Park

The Route-Starting from Chesterfield

Chesterfield to Staveley-The Cuckoo WayThe Cuckoo Way to Staveley is a level, surfaced route of 5.5 miles and is suitable for walkers and cyclists of all abilities. It offers easy access for people with limited mobility.

Walkers: Cross on the crossing as you leave the station, turn left then follow the pavement round to Brimington Road. Cross with care, turn right, walk down and turn left into Holbeck Close. After 100 metres bear right along the riverside path, the Cuckoo Way. Follow this until you cross a footbridge keeping the river on your left to join the Chesterfield Canal to Staveley.

Cyclists: Turn left from the station, then immediately right and right again at the roundabout onto Brimington Road. After about 800 metres take the track on the left to Tapton Mill Bridge and join the Cuckoo Way.

Chesterfield to Staveley-TPT BridlewayThe Southern Bridleway Link provides a 6 mile route for horse riding, cycling and walking. It follows minor roads and improved bridleways to Inkersall Green, which can be steep in parts and may prove more challenging for some. An easy access track, formerly a railway line, completes the link to Staveley.

Walkers and Turn right from the station under the rail bridge and cyclists: follow Crow Lane to Tapton Golf Course. Follow the signposts and waymarkers along the bridleways and minor roads to the former railway line which leads to Staveley.

Horse riders: Join the route at Tapton Golf Course and follow the signposts as above.

Staveley to Rother Valley Country ParkAll visitors can experience the TPT together northwards between Staveley and Rother Valley CountryPark. This 5.5 mile section of the TPT is a former railway line and is easy going with a level surface.

All users: From the junction with the Cuckoo Way and the Southern Bridleway Link in Staveley, follow the TPT across the railway line, down the ramp and continue along the former railway line, passing Renishaw and Killamarsh on the way to Rother Valley Country Park. The TPT runs parallel for a time with the Cuckoo Way.

This leaflet shows the route of the Trans Pennine Trail from its southern terminus in the historic market town of Chesterfield to Rother Valley Country Park. Between Chesterfield and Staveley, the route is divided. There is an easy access path along the Cuckoo Way (Chesterfield Canal towpath) and a bridleway link further south through Brimington Common. All visitors follow the same route between Staveley and Rother Valley Country Park.
