NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE HOME OF STREET FURNITURE JUNE 2013

One of Europe’s leading leisure and retail destinations presented a challenging brief – to provide perimeter security protection which not only enhanced the landscaping but was also sympathetic to existing heritage designs. In fact, just the kind of brief we like.

To protect Gunwharf Quays’ designer outlets, restaurants and leisure facilities from vehicle incursion, we created a bespoke hardwood sapele timber planter to encase our PAS 68 CT Block security system.

The CT Block system was installed in its normal cost effective manner, requiring no extensive and expensive ground works and the timber casing disguised the CT Block’s primary function of perimeter protection. Supplied with planting membrane and drainage material, the security system was ready to provide a splash of colour as soon as installation was complete.

A secondary challenge was to upgrade the Quays’ existing cast iron bollards, making them resilient to the saline environment and ensuring the heritage marine design was retained.

We created 35 bollard sleeves in our Performa-Cast™ polymer material, moulded to match three existing heritage designs. These sleeves were fitted over PAS 68 security bollards to enhance the perimeter protection.

Gunwharf Quays is a great example of security by design.

INSIDE: FOUR OF THE BEST - Cycle Elements - New Bollard Product

Sheffield Standard

It’s nearly a year since the London Olympics produced Britain’s best ever haul of cycling medals and Sir Bradley Wiggins became Britain’s first winner of the Tour de France.

Sport England’s Active People survey shows over 200,000 more people are cycling at least once per week than were in October 2011. This brings the total number of people in England now cycling at least once per week to nearly two million.

All the indications suggest this figure is set to grow even further as more and more people catch the cycling bug, both for financial and fitness reasons.

Cycling elements are now included as the norm in landscaping upgrades, street furniture refurbishments, public transport developments and commercial property projects. It now seems provision of secure, covered cycling storage is as important to many people as car parking.

Here’s a selection of our current best-selling cycle elements to give you a flavour of what’s available.

One topic which always seems to be at the forefront of public interest is the weather. Our summers seem to be wetter and shorter and our winters colder and longer. The smart money suggests this is going to become the norm.

As well as affecting people’s wellbeing, the increasingly challenging UK weather does have an impact on street furniture. More than ever, the implications of the environment are having a bearing on both the type of street furniture being specified and also the materials used in manufacture.

Our biggest growth area is in our Performa-Cast™ polymer range, primarily because of the enhanced protection it offers from rust and saline erosion and the benefits of not requiring ongoing maintenance.

We’ve also noticed more covered walkways and shelters being included in landscaping and building projects as commercial developers and architects look for attractive and functional facilities to protect people and property from inclement weather.

Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom on the weather front. As the article on this page highlights, Britain’s weather still supports a cycling boom and cycle shelters and cycle elements are the ‘must-have’ inclusion for many businesses and public facilities. We’re also pleased to report that the demand for park benches and stylish outdoor seating has held up despite the much publicised cuts in public sector spending – just be sure to talk to your street furniture partner to make sure you’re getting the best and most resilient materials for your location and landscape.

Hopefully in the next issue I will be talking about the street furniture materials which perform the best in extreme heat. Well I can dream.

Barriers and rails play a crucial safety role in coastal locations but the high saline environment is particularly erosive. Here’s a selection of four barrier & rail systems manufactured using our Performa-Cast™ polymer material which doesn’t succumb to the elements.

FOUR OF THE BEST

This is the perfect system to protect people (and pets) from sheer drops, featuring infill panels and being tested to meet BS Parapet standards. Shown here at Admiralty Pier in Dover, using a below ground fix, the Performa-Cast™ post and rail system offers maximum protection from the elements.

Dover Post & Rail with Infill Panels

1

A straight and curved post system that’s suited to cornering. The Quayside design features pre-cast knuckles to accommodate a range of corners and angles. The version shown has an above ground fit and is light, strong and won’t rust.

2The Trinity is a fine example of using Performa-Cast™ to replicate an existing heritage cast iron design. This example is an above ground fix and was manufactured to be an exact copy of the previous cast iron posts and replace a chain with rails. Despite being right on the seafront, this Performa-Cast system is not only resilient to the elements but also unattractive to metal thieves.

3

Wyre Borough Council has an established heritage coastal post design which it wanted to maintain whilst dramatically reducing the maintenance and general upkeep required. We manufactured a Performa-Cast™ mould to exact specifications to create a fit-and-forget installation. Whatever the weather throws at it, this post & rail will stay looking as good as new.
