Dear Family and Friends,

Spontaneity, independence, curiosity, natural giftedness, courage, kindness come from within. Each of these beautiful qualities are touches of God’s Spirit within our own hearts and the hearts of others. These qualities and many others are the very essence of what connects us to each other as we journey through life. Last evening our cast, crew and staff who participated in the Wakakirri Story Challenge brought such qualities to life in their presentation of ‘Rightfully Ours’. It was indeed an outstanding performance…heart people who touch the hearts of others.

Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit.

The Year 12 Literature class recently had the pleasure of attending a performance of My Fair Lady at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. Prior to the performance the girls studied the play, Pygmalion, as part of their unit on Adaptations and Transformations. Both the staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the show in particular the rousing renditions of ‘Get Me to the Church on Time’ and ‘I could have danced all night’. Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins were brought to life and enthralled all with their incredible performances.

On 3 August, Year 11 and 12 VCE Art students immersed themselves at the ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art).

ACCA is an Australian flagship contemporary art space and a leading centre for the artistic and wider communities to participate in a critically engaged contemporary art culture that encourages curiosity and transformation. The students were highly engaged with the artworks and enjoyed both the use of technology and interactive element in the installation artworks.

Congratulations to Year 9 student, Evelyn Lama, whose photograph, 'Lend a Helping Hand' has been chosen as one of the top 12 images in the Steps’ Outreach Photography Competition on Homelessness. Steps Outreach Program, as part of Concern Australia, helps to provide “young people with practical and relational support, which includes helping them to locate appropriate accommodation, provide clothing, food and transport”. The photography competition is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the youth homelessness issue here in Melbourne and funds to support the program. Evelyn’s photograph will be used in the 2018 Homelessness Calendar and Homelessness Photography Exhibition. The exhibition will be held at Bean Good Cafe, 200 Queen St (corner of Little Bourke St), from 2-31 August and is an event for Homelessness Week 7-13 August. The hours that it is opened for are as follows: Monday to Friday 6.30am-4.00pm and a special opening on Saturday 5 August 11am-3pm only.

Last week we launched the Year 7 and 10 Peer Support Program. During each Pastoral Care session for Term Three, the Year 7s meet with their Year 10 leaders to participate in organised activities. The Peer Support Program aims to develop resilience, communication, social skills, coping strategies, decision making and problem solving skills. It also promotes friendship and support between older and younger peers. It was fantastic to observe the groups getting to know each other as they worked on different tasks.

A bitterly cold Sunday morning in Prahran. Excited chatter and laughter emanating from the David Williamson Theatre at Melbourne Polytech. The big day had arrived and the OLSH Theatresports team was ready for anything! Impro Melbourne’s Theatresports™ Challenge, held on Sunday 6 August, was a celebration of the diverse imagination of youth. Theatresports™, a popular improvisation show created by Keith Johnstone, has been performed in Australia for over 30 years and has helped to foster the talent of Lano and Woodley, Julia Zemiro, Andrew Denton and more. Theatresports™ fosters the ideals of making your partner look good, creative thinking and playfulness as well as building confidence and theatre skills. The day started with a fun workshop that released energy and creativity in a variety of games. This was followed by preparation for the show. After a lunch break the show began and there was a lively audience in attendance. Teams of students took to the stage and played a variety of Theatresports™ games – one, two and three minute challenges. The OLSH team entered into the spirit of the day and performed in fine style. It was a really great day! Congratulations to Issoudun students, Laura Campbell, Grace Jemetta, Olivia Jonasz and Abbey Snell, who received a CERTIFICATE OF AWESOMENESS at the end of the day. Our girls were indeed awesome!

St James College East Bentleigh, in association with OLSH College Bentleigh, will present David Neville’s adaptation of Joan Lingard’s Across the Barricades on 7 and 8 September at St James College’s new Studio Theatre, 156 Bignell Road, East Bentleigh. The play is set in Ireland and follows the relationship of Sadie and Kevin. They become close friends, but face obstacles from their parents as Sadie is a Protestant and Kevin is a Catholic. The play tells us about how difficult it is to live in a world filled with barricades; a theme that continues to resonate in today’s world. We look forward to a wonderful junior drama event; giving our Year 7 and 8 OLSH students the experience of working with St James students and the joy of performing for an audience. We are very excited to showcase the inaugural Senior Drama with De La Salle College Malvern. A very talented cast is enjoying the brilliance of Oscar Wilde as they rehearse this wonderful comedy of manners. The Irishman Oscar Wilde claimed to write ‘trivial comedies for serious people’, but he did more than that. His wit mixed impudence, farce, and logic and he laughed at the English in a way that has probably only been bettered by his fellow Irishman, George Bernard Shaw. Although Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest was first produced on St Valentine’s Day, 1895 to this day still incites the same bite as we can see clearly that Wilde was laughing at the very people who went to see his plays, although it is doubtful that his audiences were aware of this. The play will be performed on 14 and 15 September 7.30pm in the OLSH College Hall. Tickets can be purchased commencing 14 August via the website.

Co-curricular Activities

Many families visited Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College on Open Morning which was held on 9 August in the new OLSH Centre. They were entertained by Year 11 student, Fabiola Narcis, who played acoustic guitar and sang beautifully. The Year 12 Leaders then welcomed guests and said the opening prayer and Welcome to Country message. The Principal, Anne O'Loughlin, spoke about all of the opportunities offered to OLSH students and she was followed by Sharon Kilmartin whose daughter is currently in Year 7. Families then enjoyed taking a tour of the College with the Student Ambassadors before returning for morning tea with key staff

Over 50 Alumnae from the Class of 1987 returned to the College on the evening of Friday 16 June for a wonderful evening of reconnecting and reminiscing about their days at OLSH College. The ladies enjoyed refreshments and catching up on everyone’s latest news. Many commented it seemed like no time at all since they were last at OLSH but they were amazed at the growth of the school which they saw it first hand on a tour which was led by current students. It was a pleasure to welcome back the Class of 1987 and hear of their fond memories and of the special place OLSH College has in their hearts.

All OLSH College students and their fathers are invited to celebrate together at a Father’s Day Breakfast. Where: OLSH Centre When: Friday 1 September from 7.30am Cost: $15.00 per person Bookings: www.olsh.vic.edu.au, News and Events, Upcoming Events
