Introduction

Welcome to the June issue of TL.There are one or two changes to the magazine this month that the eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted already: firstly the magazine has had a bit of a facelift, so my thanks to the ever-so-talented Heather Rugeley for creating such a great canvas.

Secondly, not being one to let the grass grow underfoot for too long, I decided that instead of TL’s usual in-depth interview with a big name in the industry this month, it might be fun to look at some of the less well known - but nonetheless talented - individuals who are beavering away around the world, creating stunning projects and installations, and quietly making a name for themselves by talent alone.

And it was fun – if difficult - to pick just a few to highlight here. There really is a huge pool of talent out there, and it’s refreshing to speak to these designers, hear the stories of how they’ve overcome challenges to create exactly the look and feel they envision for a particular installation – and how they simply won’t compromise. Take for instance, Christian Seltmann, who was so determined to create the perfect glass panel to diffuse the light of LEDs, he gave up on glass blowing and built his own oven to do the job perfectly.

You may have seen Seltmann’s work at Light+Building – his stand was, by all accounts, mobbed for the duration of the show. He came to my notice through last month’s interviewee, Nick Mailer, who mentioned him after seeing the Lab crème brulee stand – so my thanks to Nick for the heads’ up.

These are the attributes of tomorrow’s top designers, and I’m always pleasantly surprised by how many like-minded souls the industry spawns each year.

The third change this month is the addition of a whole new section for TL – event lighting. It’s become clear that this niche market is growing, possibly faster than any other sector apart from LEDs - so much so that it can now command its own space.

Do have a look, and if there’s anything you’d like to see that you think we’re missing out on, then please get in touch. We’d love to hear what you think.

The four-year programme, planned to start later this year, will see larger, more powerful lights located on mainly non-residential traffic routes containing energy efficient equipment, which will allow the lights to be dimmed during off peak hours and maintain full power during peak traffic flows. The system allows for a reduction in energy of up to £283,000 per year, with the reduction in maintenance costs due to the longer life of each lamp adding to this value.

Peter Hardy, Buckinghamshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Transport said: ‘It is good news for the people of

Buckinghamshire that we can make

further savings from this initiative while providing an

improved lighting stock on these traffic routes.’ Steven Adams, Cabinet Member for Environment said: ‘By replacing our street lights with modern, energy efficient ones, we are not only going to be saving council taxpayers a considerable amount of money, but we are also reducing our carbon footprint quite significantly.’

The project costs of £3.7m have a projected payback period of 14 years, and will deliver a total energy saving of 2,838,000 KwHrs with a carbon saving of 1,484 tonnes during that time.

Transport for Buckinghamshire has taken the decision to replace more than 10,000 streetlights with modern, energy efficient units.

BRC Global Standards Conference

The recent BRC Global Standards Conference brought together a wide audience who heard how the BRC is developing its Certification scheme and Training Academy around the world.

Sponsoring the event, GlassGuard guided delegates on the IEC 61549 Fragment Retention Lamp Standard, informing on the risk of glass contamination from accidental lamp breakage.

The company has been promoting industry compliant lamps to certificated food and packaging manufacturers since the introduction of the Standard in 2010. Marketing manager, Stewart Damonsing said: ‘We have enjoyed a long and productive partnership with the BRC,

and the IEC 61549 Fragment Retention Standard aligns with the BRC’s aim to produce the most effective food safety standard.’

Delegates visiting the GlassGuard stand were given the opportunity to view the company’s training module: ‘An Introduction to Fragment Retention Fluorescent Lamps’, providing application guidelines and highlighting the dangers of non-compliant products. The training module is available for free download at www.glassguard.co.uk/brc

ilbert Moity’s installation, Hanging Forest is a real gem, hidden away in the wonderful chocolate shop of artisan, Patrick Roger, in the Place du Grand Sablon, Brussels.

The shop, which falls under the protection of the Cultural Heritage Authorities, is long and narrow with a seven metre-high ceiling and a massive bronze sculpture in the centre to display the goods.

Referencing the work of the artisan, who draws inspiration from nature, French lighting designer, Moity created the installation to appear to float above the sculpture. Working within the shape of the space, Moity suspended 90 tubes of different lengths arranged in a deliberately random, almost untidy way. The light emitted radiates to the centre of the store while three LEDs installed at the lower end of each tube, direct light on to the bronze sculpture to accentuate the edible creations on display.

Moity created the overall lighting design to integrate with his stunning central fitting, using 70 projectors, 10W LED T2700°, installed on suspended power rails.

Named as one of Hong Kong’s Ten Most Outstanding Designers in 2007, and awarded the Outstanding Greater China Design Award two years running (2008 and 2009), Tino Kwan has also received awards

from The China Illuminating Engineering Society, The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan and The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

His recent project to light CENTRAL/CENTRAL, the new shopping destination in downtown Hong Kong, has created a holistic experience for shoppers, as he explains: ‘Each of the shops reflects the individual personality of the international designer represented within it, and has been designed with the two-fold aim of showing off the beauty of the products within, as well as positively impacting sales.’

The project was achieved using high quality LED technology, to ensure drama and ambience are balanced by reduced heat and energy consumption.

Anyone who saw the amazing Light saber illuminating the skies above London’s BT Tower last September will probably know the name of Jonny Milmer.

The creation of Imagination’s senior lighting designer involved projecting a 600m beam of intense blue light from the top of the 189m-high tower.

The equipment weighed almost two tonnes, but the only way onto the roof was via a small hatch, meaning Milmer’s choice of equipment was restricted by the lack of access. He settled on 16 Zap technology BigLite 4.5 lamps on the roof, 24 MBI flood lamps on the dish level of the tower and 20 VL3500 wash lamps on the surrounding roofs. The show was programmed using a grandMA2 lighting desk, controlled remotely through an iPad, 530m away on the roof of the Imagination building. Milmer studied Sound, Light & Live Event Technology at the University of Derby, after getting bitten by the lighting bug at the tender age of eight.  He said: ‘I love the creative process, and working with other talented designers to find solutions to problems that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical, given the conditions of the problem.’

The BT tower is the most recent in a string of high profile installations for Milmer, including Battersea Power Station and the Evoque launch in Shanghai, New York and Milan, both for Land Rover. On his career to date, Milmer said: ‘I was working in a local theatre at the age of eight, and have pursued lighting design in all forms through my school and university career, so that I could be where I am today. ‘I›m living the dream! I always wanted to be a lighting designer and I am now able to work on some of the most interesting lighting design projects around the world as my full time job.’

Christian Seltmann’s creations owe as much to art as lighting design, but look a little closer and you realise technology, chemistry and specialist manufacturing techniques all play a part in his work. The German-born designer set up Labo crème brulee in Majorca with his wife and brother in 2003, to create individual

RISING STARSA change is as good as a rest, according to those in the know, so we’re taking a mid-season break from our series of in-depth interviews, in order to bring you TL’s ‘one to watch’ selection of

lighting designers that you may not know - yet...

lighting installations to commission. He explained the concept: ‘Each piece features LED-based diffusing – a new form of lighting’.

Seltmann admits to one or two ‘lucky strikes’ during the development of his technique, which included having to invent his own oven to create glass with natural looking bubbles of all sizes – the only way to create the ethereal quality of light he demands. His designs are simplistic: ‘minimal design; so form follows function,’ he explained. Highly polished aluminium, brass or steel is used to create the framework for stunning glass panels, which allow the light to shine through, in the way a stained glass window diffuses light onto the floor of an old church. At Light+Building 2012 in Frankfurt this spring, Seltmann was asked to take part in the Trend Forum – a great compliment he recognises. ‘Being chosen as one of 40 from the 2,500 exhibitors is a great honour for our company’, he said. ‘We are not trying to be the next Philips or Osram; we want to be small but beautiful.’

Canadian designer, François Roupinian’s work includes lighting exhibitions at the Museum of Strasbourg, the National Museum of Singapore and the country’s National Library, as well as caberets at the Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas and the newly completed Revel Casino in Atlantic City.

‘We began with the event centres at the Revel Casino Resort, but were soon commissioned

ContactsGilbert Moity www.gilbertmoity.comTino Kwan www.tinokwan.comJonny Milmer www.imagination.comChristian Seltmann www.labocremebrulee.comFrançois Roupinian www.lightemotion.ca

to illuminate the casino itself,’ says Roupinian. The founder of Lightemotion has put his

signature on Amsterdam’s Ajax Experience Museum; the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile of Torino and the Wine Museum of Barolo in Italy; as well as the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

‘At Lightemotion, we have a passion for light and an artistic vision that speaks for itself in our designs,’ Roupinian explained. ‘When we illuminate a building, our main objective is to transcend convention and bring it to life, articulating form and reinforcing the brand in a dynamic way.’

He believes artistic flair is just one part of the success he has achieved to date, citing the process and methodology used as big factors in completing projects to the client’s satisfaction. ‘Clients want to be wowed but they also want to be sure that they are working with a professional team’.

Recent projects at the Cinémathèque Québecoise, the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal, the interior of the Place des Arts and the Church of St-John the Evangelist brought recognition in his hometown of Montreal.

‘I’m very proud that we are participating in the rejuvenation of the Complexe Desjardins,’ he said. ‘It’s a city institution, a place that everyone knows, and we are giving it a new lease of life by designing a custom light fixture that creates a new dynamically lit environment. Using LEDs has drastically reduced the energy requirements of the centre, while creating a colour-change effect that brings to life the space and the experience of those within it.

‘Every project presents its own set of challenges and we look forward to them all.’

Ecodesign: A golden opportunity for innovation or for retail confusion, asks Jessica Parker, marketing manager at TCP?

OPI N ION

People

THE ECODESIGN performance requirements are undoubtedly helping to push the lighting industry forward, with new technological innovations and more energy efficient products being developed and produced by manufacturers. However, it is also a time when we need to stop and think about the impact that this rapid period of change is having on retailers.

With DIM1 and DIM2 legislation affecting LED, CFL, halogen and incandescent lighting over the next few years, UK retailers are faced with the daunting prospect of having to make sense of the sea of legislation coming into force.

Even for people within the industry, the changes can seem bewildering. This September marks the death knell for the 40W incandescent bulb in the UK, and DIM 1 will see increased performance requirements coming into force for CFLs

and halogens next year, with further regulations for the latter in 2016.

Directional and non-directional LED products will also have to adhere to new requirements from late 2013, and DIM 2 regulations will result in further standards coming into force for reflectors in the same year. If all that wasn’t enough, a new energy label will be required for all products in September of next year.

It is difficult enough for the people who live and breathe lighting to keep pace with the regulations, and for wholesalers - for whom lighting is just one product line - what must it be like for the retailers who have to try to offer the latest and best products to their consumers while all these changes are taking place?

Are we, as an industry providing them with the information that they need at this time, or are we guilty of just letting them fend for themselves, assuming that they will be completely au fait with Ecodesign and its implications?

For our part, we have designed a category management service for the retailers we work with, giving them guidance and support during this period of change. But I think that this issue is so big and so fundamental to the future of our industry that we really all need to be doing a lot more to help the retail sector.

Retailers have to plan their purchases well in advance, with many importing directly from manufacturers with bases in the Far East. However, if they don’t stay aware of the new

Ecodesign performance requirements, they may suddenly find that they are unable to order a particular product because it can no longer be sold in the UK, potentially leading to lost sales and delays until a replacement product is sourced.

The job of a retail buyer is tough. Most have responsibility for a number of different lines, so it’s understandable that they may not have time to trawl through - and make sense of - pages and pages of Ecodesign regulations, which affect just one of many product ranges they are responsible for. So, what can we as an industry do to help retailers? I think the key is training. Educating retailers also means that consumers are kept informed through them. Manufacturers and legislative experts need to come together with their retail lighting partners. They need to support the retailers to help them make sense of the performance requirements and to understand the myriad new products that can now be sourced as replacements.

As an industry, we are entering what I believe to be the most exciting period in our history, with new technologies and product innovations occurring at a rapid pace. But we must ensure we make the most of this opportunity and bring retailers and consumers with us on the journey, instead of losing them somewhere along the way.

Feelin’ groovyAimed at consumers concerned with rising energy costs, Groove Bulb LED lamps use 85 per cent less electricity than standard versions, so consumers can expect immediate savings. With an anticipated life of 30 years, they shouldn’t need replacing for a very long time.

Available exclusively online, the first lamp to go on sale is a 9w model, available in either bayonet or screw fitting.

Produced with aesthetics in mind, it comes with either silver or natural (near white) grooves to blend with a variety of lighting products.

‘The challenge with LED bulbs is the cost of manufacturing,’ explains founder, James Theobald. ‘We have worked hard to create a high quality product that produces a pleasant and reliable light that consumers want, at a price that works.’

‘We want the Groove Bulb to stand out from the crowd and engage people in conversation,’ affirms sales manager, Tina Taylor. ‘Consumers want honesty, clarity, and brands they can talk to and trust. Our branding reflects these values and demonstrates our commitment to reducing emissions.’

Groove Bulb© intends to expand its product range later this year and roll out a 100w equivalent and candle-style lamp.

The owners of the Empire State Building have selected Philips as its partner to transition the building’s iconic tower lights to LEDs.

The two organisations have pushed the boundaries of LED technology to develop a state-of-the-art dynamic lighting system from Philips Color Kinetics that will allow the building’s façade and mast to change lighting scenes in real-time. In addition to greater control and management, the system will deliver superior light levels and highlight the building’s architectural details.

The tower lights are used to recognise key events, a tradition started in 1932, when a simple searchlight was used to announce the election of Roosevelt as President. To honour the US Bicentennial, coloured floodlights illuminated the building at night, lighting up red, white and blue.

The computerised Philips LED lighting system will provide customised lighting from a palette of 16 million colours, including hard-to-achieve pastels, in virtually limitless combinations. The 400 new LED fixtures will replace the current palette of just 10 colours. Anthony Malkin, president of Malkin Holdings

commented: ‘It is time to update our iconic tower lighting. We surveyed the

market for the most technologically advanced, energy efficient, and reliable lighting system to illuminate the iconic symbol of the New York City skyline. Philips Color Kinetics’ LED system will make our

James Baker from Cambridge Design Partnership looks at the immediate future of LEDs and OLEDs, and ponders on the next generation of lighting technology

n these days of soaring energy prices, every use of energy is under pressure. With domestic users seeing more than ten per cent of their electricity bill spent on lighting - and commercial users significantly higher - lower energy lighting represents a way to significantly reduce energy costs.

LED emitters for bulk lighting present many opportunities for innovation, but they also have significant technical challenges. The potential for production of high quality lighting with radically reduced energy usage is clearly an opportunity.

DESIGN?FUTURE-PROOFING

Energy efficient lighting

The initial purchase cost of quality LED lighting is still a barrier to large-scale

adoption, but it is reducing year-on-year. The forthcoming

ban on incandescent lamps in 2016 will help to re-balance

this by removing the lowest price point competition. It is anticipated that

technical and manufacturing developments will enable the initial purchase cost of LED lamps to be competitive with top-end compact fluorescent within a few years too.

Another interesting opportunity is apparent in OLED technology. Organic LED technology offers an interesting innovation angle by providing a large panel emitter rather than the point source offered by inorganic LEDs. With costs approximately 50 times that of inorganic LEDs, and luminous efficiencies currently comparable to halogen incandescent bulbs, this technology isn’t commercially viable today, but it offers great potential for future innovation - with costs and efficiencies predicted to improve rapidly.

KEY POINTSSo what are the key knowledge points for LED lighting today? What is the ‘state-of-the-art’ in lighting, and what might the future offer?

Incandescent bulb replacement products will be a development focus for the next

few years to service the large numbers of lamp-holding fixtures already in premises. Integrated fixtures without replaceable bulbs offer new avenues of design freedom and will come to dominate in the future. With LED emitter technology set to drop in price, mechanical parts will come to occupy a larger fraction of product cost. Fixtures can ultimately justify higher price points than bulbs.

The race to create incandescent bulb replacements means that LED emitter technology is developing at an incredible pace. Any particular LED might be superseded in a matter of months. Product developments need to be fast - and right first time.

Light output and low energy performance are technology drivers, giving potential to use LEDs to broaden product offerings or even promote a platform of low energy products.

Communicating performance and quality specifications at consumer level is not well addressed. This makes choice difficult and disappointment likely. Technical education, combined with careful marketing activity will help to address this area.

LED lighting is currently seen as expensive, and growth into emerging markets will demand lower price points. Technical and manufacturing developments will allow initial costs to be reduced, while consumer education may help to shift the focus from high initial to lower lifetime costs enabled through lower energy consumption.

Historically an area of design innovation, lighting design is accelerating with new avenues offered by solid state lighting technology. Collaboration between design and technical disciplines will be critical to allow these opportunities to be fully explored.

Solid state lighting is clearly an area with potential for growth and opportunities for success. With incandescent bulbs - the current volume leader - set to be banned in 2016, the space is ripe for new market leaders to emerge.

What attracted you to the LED industry?

The future of Solid State lighting offers potential of energy reduction, environmental friendly, long lifetime & future proof design.

Could you outline what your work with the Welsh Government’s Solid State Lighting project entailed?

The aim of the R&D project at Swansea University funded by the Welsh Energy Research Centre (WERC), was to demonstrate potential energy reduction using LED over conventional lighting within the Welsh School of Architecture building at Cardiff University.

More than 20 per cent energy reduction was achieved by switching from T8 fluorescent to LED ceiling tile luminaires. In addition, reading lamps that were fitted with LEDs also showed a significant 77 per cent energy saving over compact fluorescents.

Is Cree currently working on any similar projects?

Yes. Cree and its LED City programme is collaborating with the US Department of Energy to expand and enhance LED lighting adoption and energy-efficient LED streetlight opportunities within cities. The Municipal SolidState Street Lighting Consortium, sponsored by the US DOE will provide on-going national organisational structure and guidance to LED City members, and will assume conducting meetings

providing a forum where buyers and implementers can share information and experience.

Do you feel there is enough Government support for R&D and industrial policies that drive investments in underlying parts of the value chain (fabrication, packaging, assembly, etc)?

There was some Government efforts implemented over the past few years to encourage development in Solid State lighting industries. The Carbon Trust Fund was established to encourage R&D technology development in reducing carbon footprint emission whether in lighting or within the building. However, there weren’t any standards developed in the UK or Europe to regulate the import of LED lamps. Users were put off by cheap, poor quality imported LED lamps from the Far East, which didn’t meet the performance criteria for general lighting applications. The majority of standards we have today reference the industry standards developed in the US by the IESNA& Energy Star CALIPER programme.

Why is presenting at euroLED important to you and your company?

EuroLED - being one of the main LED exhibitions in the UK – offers an opportunity for lighting companies and suppliers to exhibit LED products, attend conferences and meetings and to position their company profile.

he owners of the UK’s largest conference and event venue, the NEC, Birmingham, have taken the decision to completely

refit the Skywalk area with award-winning LED lighting, in order to improve the visitor experience while saving energy and lowering carbon emissions.

The company approached MHA Lighting with a request to devise a bespoke solution for the Skywalk that would reduce energy bills while improving light quality. MHA was also tasked with replacing the traditional fluorescent lighting in the Concourse and Gallery suites with its LED solution, which uses ‘wave guide’ technology with intelligent controls to achieve energy savings of up to 80 per cent.

Wave guide shines light sideways into an encapsulation – not directly outwards. This avoids direct contact with the eye and provides a safe and efficient light output. Acrylic rods amplify and control the light output, reducing the number of LEDs required. This means the designers could use high power LEDs that draw less current and had no need to diffuse the output.

MHA installed 144 TiLites in the two suites and 260 bespoke RodLites above the 400m-long Skywalk, that were designed to match the venue’s corporate branding, while

remaining in keeping with lighting finishes in other areas. The 30W RodLites replaced 54W T8 tubes (which of course rises to 58-60W when the ballast is included), immediately creating energy savings of 50 per cent.

As the lights are on continuously, software was installed that uses sensors to detect when the Skywalk area is empty and dims the RodLites to just ten per cent power. With the intelligent controls in place, more than 70 per cent energy savings have been achieved.

In the Concourse and Gallery Suites, MHA replaced T8 fluorescents with TiLite 30 and TiLite 30/120 fittings that were engineered to dim down to just seven per cent and to work seamlessly with RGB LED downlights.

Andrew Cope, project engineer at the NEC, said: ‘As an organisation, the NEC has committed to a 60 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Lighting is a massive part of us achieving this target. We have around 70,000 lights throughout the site - that equates to a fifth of our energy usage.

‘We definitely found the best solution in terms of budget, energy reduction targets and overall lighting effect. The light colour, output and uniformity is tremendous. MHA Lighting has the right attitude and real enthusiasm for its lighting technology. It has the ability to be flexible and offer bespoke solutions – nothing was too much trouble. They listened and found solutions.’

MHA managing director, Tom Harrison, said: ‘When I first saw the completed installation in the Concourse and Gallery Suites I felt extremely proud of the truly impressive lighting scheme we helped create. The combination of the colour-changing LEDs and the white light from the TiLite working in harmony under DMX control is sensational, and creates a unique environment for events and conferences.’

The acoustic Blade range from Spectral is a combined luminaire and acoustic panel designed for concrete interiors.

The trend for bare concrete interiors has created a need for effective acoustic treatments to deal with the increased noise levels generated. Blade combines a high performance acoustic panel and luminaire, in a range of output choices for T5 lamps with new LED options currently in development.

‘While the trend for stripped back interiors has allowed designers more creative expression, it has come at a cost,’ says Mike Attard, MD of RIDI Lighting. ‘Many of these buildings are high-occupancy spaces, which generate significant noise levels, which in turn has an impact on concentration and productivity. Blade is a stylish lighting and acoustic solution that is able to reduce noise levels while being an effective light source. Rather than detracting from the interior they add a new design dimension, which is not offered by any other comparative acoustic board solution.’ Available in a range of RAL colours and finishes, Blade comes with a suspension kit to allow custom configuration to suit each building and lighting scheme. The luminaire version blends in seamlessly with the matching acoustic panels and removes any concerns of shadowing in the lighting design. A typical arrangement will include one luminaire version in every four runs to achieve both the thermal management and acoustic properties of the design, as well as providing ample light to the desired area.

Coventry University’s £32m addition, The Hub has been equipped with a state-of-the-art self-testing emergency lighting monitoring system from P4.

The Hub features sustainable building design; construction and operation. It uses ground source cooling, natural ventilation, solar water heating, a green roof, and is managed by an electronic buildings management system.

‘Given the scope and size of this exciting new facility, which will be in use around the clock, we needed to ensure that our emergency lighting system would provide the safest, most accurate and convenient remote monitoring procedure through its Local Area Network,’ says electrical engineer, Colin Griffiths, .

The University chose P4’s M-Web as the most reliable, cost effective and flexible self-testing computer addressable solution for the complex after it had been successfully used in other locations throughout the estate. M-Web has an addressable

CENTRAL/CENTRAL, a retail concept developed by GRI, Asia’s leading international apparel and accessories brand-management and retail-distribution company, brings together the company’s portfolio of brands under one roof for the first time in Hong Kong’s latest shopping destination.

Names in the 1,675sq m retail space include: Anne Klein New York; Carolinna Espinosa; Easy Spirit; EQ:IQ, Joan & David; Karen Millen; Nine West and Steve Madden.  Thanks to the use of Megaman’s latest LED reflector technology, the end result is not only the ultimate in visual lighting drama, but in energy savings as well - with 105,090 kWh saved in energy consumption and 73,563 kg in CO2 emissions each year.

To define this stylish mall, GRI commissioned Steve Leung Designers Ltd to create a flowing space that accommodated each brand’s outlet with fluidity, but also allowing for individual expression.  Working alongside renowned lighting designer, Tino Kwan, founder of Tino Kwan Lighting Consultants, Leung’s design is a stunning white shopping canvas within which each collection or brand, is presented.

An exciting shopping experience in the heart of Central,Hong Kong’s financial and commercial district, is turning heads thanks to its array of designer stores, lit with the latest in highly energy efficient lamp technology

‘The lighting technology used throughout has been chosen with visual impact, customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind’

Nine West’s interior scheme concentrates light onto the displays

Tino Kwan explains: ‘CENTRAL/CENTRAL is a holistic shopping experience, and with this in mind, it has been divided into nine areas, eight shops and one private relaxation area, each with its own style and character of light fitting.

‘Each of the shops reflects the individual personality of the international designer represented within it, and has been designed with the two-fold aim of showing off the beauty of the products within, as well as positively impacting sales.’

While the design of each of the stores aims to offer the maximum flexibility for merchandising, the lighting technology used throughout has been chosen with visual impact, customer comfort and energy efficiency in mind.

Kwan chose to use Megaman LED reflector technology due to the lighting performance of the lamps, the variety of directional beam angles available, and the sustainable credentials of Megaman as a company.  Within CENTRAL/CENTRAL, over 750 of the company’s LED AR111

10W dimmable 8, 24 and 45 degree light sources and LED MR16 10W dimmable 24 degree lamps were used in order to create the right balance of drama and ambience within each of the stores, whilst reducing heat and energy consumption.

 THE POSSIBILITIES OF LED TECHNOLOGY

Apart from its energy saving potential and light quality, LED technology is of particular interest in retail installations due to the reduced heat output of the lamps, which not only means cost saving on air conditioning, but they’ve become the friend of the visual merchandiser because they can be positioned very close to items on display without danger of fire, fade or scorching.

Part of Megaman’s LED reflector series, the AR111 and MR16 ranges of LED low energy replacements for halogen reflectors incorporate the company’s patented Thermal Conductive Highway (TCH) technology, which has superb heat dissipation, lighting performance and lumen maintenance.  As a result the LED AR111 and MR16 ranges last up to 13 times longer and use 80 per cent less power than halogen equivalents.  With the same high quality light intensity and colour rendering of traditional AR111 and MR16 spotlights (colour rendering of up to Ra92), but with no UV light radiation, negligible IR radiation or residual glare, the LED AR111 and MR16 ranges are ideal for use in any retail outlet.

Designed as a lifestyle experience, CENTRAL/CENTRAL encourages customers to find inspiration, balance and a sense of wellbeing within its stores and VIP suite.  From the moment shoppers arrive at the double-height atrium, CENTRAL/CENTRAL seeks to inspire and welcome.

The atrium:To evoke a sense of floating within an ethereal setting, textures rather than colours are used within the atrium to add interest and depth.  A selection of beautiful marble has been used throughout, whilst a sculptural fin panel has been installed as a decorative element.  A reflective, fluid mobile installation by renowned Japanese artist, Hirotoshi Sawada hovers above the space, and enhances the mood.

The stores:The curved, sculptural walls lead customers to the Nine West store, illuminated by signature light cubes in its windows. An off-white palette, light oak wood flooring and warm lighting serve to highlight the colourful seasonal merchandise; while diagonal shelving provides a layered, 3D perspective.  For a dynamic touch, a TV wall introduces the

latest trends and styling tips to customers while it adds a sense of movement to the overall shopping environment.

The casual sophistication of Easy Spirit is presented in a free-floating design concept store. A warm colour palette with timber wall cladding and marble flooring imbue the space with a serene, muted ambience.  Inspired by Easy Spirit’s ‘anti-gravity’ secret soles (made with millions of cushioning nitrogen-filled micro bubbles), playful elements have been designed for the area, such as shoe hanging features and drifting plinth shelves.

Infused with classic refinement and sophistication, the Joan & David corner boutique is beautifully encased in glass to give customers a discreet sense of privacy without sacrificing the light, open character of the space as a whole. Oak flooring, a white ceiling, modern lighting, and an arc-shaped lounge area convey the comfort and luxury of a private beautiful home.

The VIP suiteThe VIP suite includes a curved wall and curve-line sofa to maintain the interior’s sense of flow and harmony throughout this private sanctuary. This seating area includes complimentary WiFi and

refreshments to re-energise customers before returning to the world beyond the doors of CENTRAL/CENTRAL.

The retail mall is a prime example of what can be achieved when the latest in high quality LED lighting technology is used to its maximum effect.  Thanks to the long lamp-life and superior light performance of the selected LEDs, CENTRAL/CENTRAL will not only look good for many years to come but save significant amounts of energy and CO2 in the process.

orking with energy expert, Power

Solutions, Stokers called in the experts at

Toshiba to pilot a lighting scheme in its Southport

store, replacing all of its 100-watt halogen lamps with 640 Toshiba PAR38 LED lamps, which are just 19.7-watts each. Since the installation, the Southport store’s energy bill has been reduced by a staggering £1,000 a month. Unsurprisingly, the scheme is now being rolled out across the rest of Stokers’ 11 stores in the UK. The programme is expected to save around £130,000 on Stokers’ annual energy bill.

Jonathan Stoker, joint managing director of Stokers Fine Furnishing, commented: ‘Energy consultant, Power Solutions was able to recommend the right sort of LED lamp for our stores, beginning with a free energy audit to demonstrate the return on investment, and then finding the right type and style of light.

‘We’ve been delighted with the results. The pilot scheme instantly reduced our carbon footprint, will pay for itself within nine-and-a-half months, and has dramatically cut the cost of our energy bills without compromising on the quality of light throughout the store. Toshiba’s LED lamps provide a soft incandescent light in focused pools across the display furniture, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere across the store.’

FACTS AND FIGURESThe dimmable Toshiba PAR38 LED lamps are a direct replacement for more than 10,000 of Stokers’ existing halogen lamps. They’re not only kind to the retailer’s energy bill, but will last up to 20 times longer than the halogens they’re replacing, minimising maintenance costs for the stores. The lamps use up to 75 per cent less energy and emit up to 70 per cent less UV light compared to halogen light, greatly reducing the amount of heat emitted by the lamps. Interestingly, this means staff in the stores will be able to turn off the air conditioning for eight months of the year, instead of the usual four – an unexpected benefit, which the Southport store is enjoying.

Edward Lees, product manager at Toshiba Lighting Systems UK said: ‘As consumers continue to rein in on spending, financial savings have never been more important for retailers.

‘With traditional lighting accounting for around 20 per cent of a retailer’s electricity costs, LEDs offer a rapid return on investment and long term cost savings, from both a main-tenance and energy consumption point of view.

‘The environmental benefits of LED lighting will also help retailers meet current environmental legislations, such as EU 2020 emissions targets.’

The pilot project began last October in the retailer’s Southport store, with a roll-out - using 3,000 Toshiba LED bulbs - having now started in another three stores.

A collaboration between a Welsh solar PV producer and a Danish lighting company has resulted in the production of a range of bespoke lighting columns that are probably the greenest answer to the Dane’s exterior lighting requirements

Shiningbeacon

B-Sol is a specialist manufacturer of custom photovoltaic modules, making panels for the OEM manufacturers of roadside,

trackside and marine equipment, and building integrated products.

Danish company, Scotia approached GB-Sol with a request for an unusual shaped panel to mount on top of a street lamp unit it was developing. The objective was to provide sufficient power for the lamp unit to work from solar power alone.

GB-Sol worked with Scotia to design an optimal system of PV panels and control equipment. Various prototypes were made and tested, both in the factory and in the field before the final version was selected. The project has been ongoing for more than a year to date, and results are very positive.

When it comes to challenges, the project had its share. The space to mount a PV panels on a lamp column is very restricted, so the initial challenge was to make an extremely elongated unit while not compromising on robustness and longevity.

The solution evolved through many variants - each step of the design process had to be proved before it moved on to the next step. The panel design evolved during the project, so really there was nothing specified as such, the overall design brief changed organically as the market area for the product became more closely identified.

The finished design is aesthetically stunning and functionally exciting. Four aptly-named SunMasts have been installed by Scotia in Denmark - Two 12m versions in Randers (a town 30km north of Aarhus) and two 10m versions at the harbour in Ebeltoft.

The new streetlights use a series of photovoltaic panels to convert day light into electricity. Energy is converted in the base of each unit and exported to the National Grid (at a profit). The photovoltaic panels were detailed and manufactured by the pioneers at GB Sol in South Wales.

SILL LIGHTING 01844 260006 | www.sill-uk.com Sill, renowned for both its optics and engineering, created huge interest at Light + Building 2012 in Frankfurt, with the launch of its stunning Gobo projector system. The Sill Gobo moves the boundaries forward by combining in a good looking IP65 body, 400W HID capability and the use of both stainless steel gobos, glass gobos, filters and framing shutters.

The heart of the projector is the use of either a 250W HCI-T G22 lamp, in which case the control gear is integral, or a 400W HCI-T G22 lamp with integral ignitor and remote gear. Both lamps give high lumen packages, long life, stable colour and, via adjustment screws, can be easily focused.

Concept designed by Yves Adrien, Paris & Montreal, the Sill Gobo accepts industry standard 86mm gobos in either stainless steel or glass, but with the advantage of using a wide 75mm aperture. Focal lengths can be adjusted between 107mm and 238mm, to give the user control over image size. Framing shutters, used with or without a gobo, allow precise cropping of the illuminated area, whilst the use of glass gobos with colour images open up even greater possibilities.

MOTHER LOVEBelieved to the first application of its kind in the UK, Philips has installed dynamic and ambient LED lighting in the recently extended Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, (NICU), at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol. This not only helps to create a calming environment for parents and babies but also may help nursing staff to work more effectively.

Designed with a holistic approach in mind, the lighting has become a key element in generating a sense of wellbeing within the unit, lessening the tension and stress which can sometimes be experienced when caring for a sick or premature baby.

Rather than harsh fluorescent light, the LED lighting in the main unit can be dimmed within a range of colours. When required, it can also be made brighter over each cot, for instance when staff are caring for the babies or analysing data on patient monitor screens.

In the hospital’s additional clinical areas, dynamic lighting, which mimics the changing nature of daylight, has been used to help staff stay alert.

The installation will provide an evidence base for the health benefits of lighting. The hospital, in conjunction with Philips Research, will conduct an eight-month study into how the new lighting affects clinical outcome, babies’ health and staff performance.

Mien hostHamilton Litestat has received RIBA approval for its new seminar: Putting You in Control.

The interactive seminar focuses on the environments and uses for lighting controls, applications for lighting systems and an introduction to multi-room audio distribution.

RIBA’s assessment is that it fits into the core curriculum of its CPD scheme, which means that chartered RIBA architects can now use the seminar towards their annual core curriculum requirement.

As part of the RIBA CPD Providers Network, Hamilton will be able to take bookings for the seminar from architects and other construction industry professionals.

Presentations will be delivered by Hamilton’s in-house wiring accessory and control system experts at individual workplaces.

Alternatively, Hamilton will host seminars at venues, including The Building Centre in London and at one of its manufacturing bases in Bristol.

‘Saving energy and making buildings smarter and more intuitive is such a huge focus at the moment that we thought it would be useful to create a practical, interactive presentation on how lighting and audio controls can contribute to

this field,’ said Ian Hamilton, managing director. ‘We’re very pleased to have been accredited by RIBA, especially within the core CPD curriculum, and would encourage anyone who is interested in improving their understanding and earning credits towards their CPD to get in touch.’

AC Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET) has been appointed exclusive distributor for the full range of lighting products manufactured by US-based, High End Systems for UK and Ireland.

The new partnership was announced at the recent Prolight+Sound exhibition, which debuted several innovations from the manufacturer.

AC-ET, with its portfolio of technology brands, is a single-source supplier of technology to the

professional entertainment industry, while High End Systems, with its history of producing cutting-edge moving and digital lights, should find a great synergy with AC-ET’s experience in supplying the touring, show and events markets.

Brad Schiller, High End Systems’ product marketing manager said: ‘High End Systems is

very excited to be partnering with AC-ET to provide UK and Irish customers with a local distributor. Its excellence in customer support combined with an impressive sales force, will offer High End Systems products to a broad range of customers.

AC-ET’s UK sales director, Jonathan Walters commented: ‘We are looking forward to making High End Systems’ innovative product range an even greater success in our product portfolio, building on the many existing years of experience we have had in supplying High End products to clients for a diverse selection of projects.’

Joint venture

De Effenaar is a multi-purpose venue in Eindhoven with two halls.

The venue, which has an eclectic programme, including live music, dance shows, corporate events and parties, has invested in Robe moving lights at the instigation of technical manager, Charles Konings, to replace all of its moving light stock.

The first delivery was of four ColorSpot 250E ATs - an immediate hit with the crew, technicians and

designers. This was followed up with 12 x ROBIN 300 Spots, which were deployed in the small hall. These made such a difference to the quality and creativity of the shows that they then decided to purchase 16 x ROBIN 600 Spots and 24 ROBIN MMX Spots to replace the moving lights in the large hall.

So why did Konings choose Robe? ‘It was a combination of our very good relationship with Controllux,’ he explains, ‘and the quality compared to

other brands’. He also involved his full technical team in the decision. ‘It’s really important that my crew are happy with the equipment they are using.’

One of the venue’s lighting designers is Natasha Von Haaften, who said: ‘We are all very excited to be working with the new Robes; they are very fast, have good colour-mixing and are completely versatile - with the zoom out and the frost filter in, they can even mimic a wash source.’

R E T R O C H I CGlittering, stunning, awe-inspiring, or just

plain hunger inducing, the choice of chandeliers has never been greater – or more fun

ONCE A SYMBOL of wealth and opulence that no des res would be properly dressed without, beautiful hand-made, centuries-old, crystal chandeliers were ripped down across Europe from the 1960s onwards, and cast onto the scrap heap – often literally – to make way for the simple clean lines we all craved for the best part of half a century.

Thankfully, as with most things, lighting trends are cyclical, and many venerable old fittings were saved, turning up in Parisienne flea markets or Grandma’s attic, where they were brought back to life by far-sighted designers and installed in contemporary interiors to great effect.

Now, a chandelier is as likely to be installed in a monolithic glass and steel office or a trendy urban kitchen as it is gracing a marble staircase in a beautifully appointed hotel lobby. Their use may have changed, but their cachet remains unaltered.

Harriet Daniels, MD of Tigermoth Lighting says: ‘Chandeliers have, in the last few years become shorthand for luxury and style.  Chandelier motifs are even being used on cushions, stationery, mugs and other accessories - the imagery is so potent that a picture alone can convey that sense of glamour.

‘The trend towards the eclectic style of interior design has really contributed to the resurgence in their popularity

Specialist lighting

Mixing period with contemporary, utilitarian with luxury, has become hugely popular.  Chandeliers fit really well in eclectic interior design schemes - for example juxtaposed against a flaky brick wall.

‘To me, there are certain aspects of an interior design scheme that are dominant features - they set the tone for the whole space.  Chandeliers definitely fall into that category, and that’s why the most important thing for me in the design is the beauty and quality of the materials.  Here at Tigermoth Lighting, we use traditional materials, such as beautiful hand-cut crystal pieces and incorporate them into simple, contemporary designs.’

Interestingly, it’s not only the primary use that’s changed – traditionally, chandeliers incorporated hundreds or even thousands of crystal droplets, designed and cut to catch and reflect the light of candles, in order to bathe large rooms in a soft and very flattering glow. Modern chandeliers are being designed to complement specific spaces - for instance, the now famous and truly memorable Dominic Bromley-designed, Scabetti chandelier in the form of a glinting shoal of fish, which has gone on to spawn an entire ocean of shapes and forms in bone china, metal and wood.

While it’s now fairly common to see kitchen utensils, cutlery or even pasta shapes reproduced in porcelain and hung to form a chandelier, artist Jean Shin has gone a stage further, by taking thousands of empty prescription pill bottles and stringing them to form a series of really elegant structural chandeliers. The work was created to express society’s ‘over-consumption of prescription drugs and our bodies’ dependency on these medications.’

Rebecca Wilson has taken the humble Jammy Dodger as her inspiration for Light Snack, the first in a series of biscuit-inspired chandeliers, which aims to glamorise the little pleasures in life. Each life-like glowing biscuit becomes a sparkling crystal component in a grand and glowing chandelier. The huge light sculpture drips with 1500 inedible fancies in milk white translucent bone china and vivid pink jammy resin.

Dedication’s a requirement for this design, as the repetitive task of casting and firing each jammy dodger, then painstakingly applying the jammy resin took Wilson around 10 weeks.

She comments: ‘Future additions to the Light Snack range will include pastel marbled Party Rings, sugary little Iced Gems, and, a personal favourite of mine, the sickly sweet Pink Wafer’. I plan to employ different types of light sources and armature constructions to best embody the qualities of three types of biscuit.

‘Tiny pastel coloured Iced Gems piped in porcelain will interrupt swathes of draped sparkling fiber optic

strands, forming a shimmering jellyfish-like body with trailing tails of light, while the rectangular geometric waffle-patterned surface of Pink Wafer will compliment an Art Deco-style waterfall chandelier with its cascading downward repetition of depleting concentric rings. The delicate waffle texture will be highlighted by the translucency of the porcelain. Finally’ she explains, ‘Party rings will overlap like sugary marbled fish-scales to form a tinkling and translucent globe with bright light spilling through their absent centres.’

Wilson’s ceramics training comes to the fore with Memoria: 100 Cups of Tea Never To Be. Describing it, Wilson says: ‘A shattered gold teapot lies below, while its soul leaves its broken vessel in the form of a swarm of 100 ghostly little winged tea cups. A faint glow from within enhances the ghostly presence of each angelic winged teacup.’ Each little cup is individually cast and assembled in bone china, and then suspended from a single fibre optic strand. The LED light source in concealed within a lightweight ceiling-rose fitting to give a ghostly cool white glow.

Of course, arresting as these designs are, there’s something breathtakingly beautiful about traditional crystal that it’s hard to beat. Only last month, TL featured the work of Nick Mailer, a lighting designer with a passion for crystal. Mailer works with Swarovski to produce stunning creations for domestic and commercial interiors. His work can be found in restaurants, bars and private homes.

When it comes to selecting light sources for chandeliers, Mailer said: ‘Each individual has a preference, sees things in their own way. I am a great believer in demonstrating products to clients - preferably in the room where the fitting will be used. A client may want an LED because it’s the buzzword in the industry, but when they actually experience all the options, it may change their opinion.

‘Crystal illuminated by a gentle warm lamp transmits a really emotional mood. I love blending fibre optic starry skies with chandeliers suspended beneath them with very low light levels, creating an effect of real depth - sometimes within quite confined spaces.’

Kenny Collins, chairman of The Lighting Store is a man who knows a thing or two about chandeliers, and has a theory about why they’re so popular now. He says: ‘The resurgence in popularity of chandeliers started as a trend for financial reasons. People always seem to leave buying lighting to last, when they have finished decorating. Often the money they’ve put aside for lighting disappears into the flooring budget, the furniture etc., and when it comes to lighting people rarely have enough money left for what they want.

‘What we saw was that people began to recycle old light fittings, often their grandparent’s old dining chandelier that had been lying around in a loft for years, and they began putting old lights into very modern kitchens and living rooms. It worked really well because the contrast between old and new was great; it made the room look even more modern and the light fitting look even older. So when people use an old fashioned looking chandelier in a modern scheme it really stands out and it works best if there’s nothing else old there and becomes a focal point. ‘On the flip side, modern lighting works well in old Victorian and Edwardian houses, like the Floss globall or the Mesmeri wall light, because they’re simple and sophisticated products.’If you’re in the market for one of these beauties, you first need to decide on style – traditional or contemporary - and then whether you want a chandelier made using modern materials

or a crystal design. Christopher Guy has a huge selection of both contemporary and older-style

designs in all sorts of materials and finishes – and importantly, for all pockets. Whether you’re

looking for hand-carved glass, a twisted steel wire cage, or a very traditional crystal droplet,

there’ll be one that’s right for you. And if you

choose wisely, you’ll not only be buying something to enhance the surroundings, it’ll create a sense of wellbeing and could even be an heirloom of the future.

I can’t help but agree with Daniels’ comments that: ‘Good chandeliers will look fabulous lit or unlit, providing a focal point for a room and being an integral part of a decorative scheme. Very good chandeliers, when lit, will also give off a light that will create a really special atmosphere in a room. I think that chandeliers need to be more than beautiful. They should work with the rest of the lighting in the room to deliver enjoyment and happiness for its users for years to come.’

‘I think that chandeliers need to be more than beautiful’

t the recent annual Lighting Design

Awards in London, a project by Licht Kunst Licht, a German lighting design group which treats artificial and day lighting as equal components of its work, took the award for International Project (Interiors).

Licht Kunst Licht ‘s portfolio encompasses offices, museums and cultural sites, government projects, transport structures, shopping centres and private residences. Projects range from individual homes to large-scale projects with budgets in excess of three billion euros.

The company’s work to light the Columbarium Liebfrauenkirche was agreed by the judges to be: ‘Beautiful, simple, delicate and sympathetic.’ They felt it was: ‘simply and effectively designed and executed.’

The restored church building, which dates from the 19th Century, was completed in January after a re-modelling period of two years. Since the restoration, the building has been used as an impressive location for urn burial ceremonies.

The sensitive lighting design – implemented using only LED technology - strikingly underlines the interior design concept planned by Staab Architekten, a Berlin-based architectural practice. ‘The subtle lighting design approach to this building with direct and indirect light is very effective,’ commented the award judges.

In the beautifully restored nave, custom-designed LED-luminaires are mounted above the columns at a height of 12.7m. With a higher light level compared to the remaining space, the choir can be highlighted as a visual reference point for the congregation.

The warm-toned lighting produces a calming atmosphere, which serves to emphasise the building’s materials and the depth of colour of the bronze grave surfaces.

The sensitive lighting design, which was created using solely LED technology, effectively underlines the interior design concept planned by Staab Architekten. The lighting principle of the nave is continued into the aisles as well as in the choir stalls, but at a slightly lower height and accordingly lower light intensities.

The lighting concept in the nave initially directs the visitor’s gaze along the central axis towards the choir. To avoid the problem of glare, honeycomb louvers have been used in all direct projectors.

Ambient lighting in the nave is achieved by using direct/indirect custom-designed LED luminaires. The luminaires are designed as compact and block-shaped housing

accommodating six adjustable projectors. The lighting elements disappear in this housing to a great extent.

In order not to distract from the architecture of the church building, the luminaires have all been designed to blend into the background rather than become the focus of visitor’s attention. Four adjustable projector heads subtly illuminate the horizontal level, while the two remaining projectors with wide beam angles subtly fade in the vaulted ceiling, while providing diffused light and creating a good balance of light levels within the space. They also serve to make the visitor more aware of the scale and height of the space.

In the church entrance, a distinctive bespoke circular chandelier accentuates the bronze font and statue with direct and indirect light sources.

LED lighting and the buzzwords are power consumption and

efficiency. Yet there is still a knowledge gap between LED

manufacturers and many of those specifying or using this

form of lighting. To many it is the new 'black' or the latest

style tool, but the reality is that LED lighting has been with

us since the 1960s. Yes it is easier to use for lighting

designers, and yes it can be cost-effective as the high initial

cost of LED-based systems can be offset by lower energy

consumption and lower maintenance costs. The real trick is

in working with the right designers, contractors and

manufacturers to ensure the initial outlay is balanced by the

long-term advantages of LED lighting.

At Oldham Lighting we trade on a reputation built on our

successful installations and working with the right electrical

contractors and lighting engineers. When we talk to our

clients most know what they want and understand the

lighting requirement for their projects. They appreciate that

LED lights are far more efficient than any other commercial

lighting with LED having a 50000 hr lifespan and lasting for

seven years at continuous operation, or 14 years at 50%

operation. Compare this to the approximate lifespan of 5000

hrs for an incandescent light bulb and ten thousand hours

for a fluorescent light.

When we introduced our latest LED range in 2011 we found

ourselves working with companies such as John Lewis,

Primark and Westfield Stratford. We have worked on small

lighting projects even though our reputation for large scale

projects worldwide is what makes us a name to remember.

LED is not new to us and we have created some exciting new

LED products such as Rana-LED that will appeal to both retail

clients and designers. We work as a partner in any project to

ensure that what we produce works for everyone from

lighting designers, electrical contractors, architects and

clients.

As one of the leading UK manufacturers, suppliers and

installers of LED and cold cathode lighting we have recently

moved to a new manufacturing facility in Surrey to cope

with an increasing order book. Oldham Lighting has been

one of the most innovative lighting installers of the past

decade with a portfolio that includes the new Eurostar

Oldham Lighting, believes the latest LED products are even

more suited to the retail environment.

“The new generation of LED products enables retailers to

take real control of their lighting. Adjusting the lighting

levels and reducing power output on bright days makes

sense when the quest is for cost effective and energy

efficient lighting. Our latest LED products are part of this

new drive for greater environmental control. We have been

working with new lighting designers and established

contractors who are always asking for lighting products that

are reliable, innovative and needed for a deadline. Moving

to our new factory will enable Oldham Lighting to meet

these demands. Our traditional skills have not changed and

our work in the Middle East and mainland Europe will also

benefit from this move.”

When Primark wanted to stand out from the rest in

Edinburgh's Princes Street with a new 75,000 sq ft landmark

store they turned to Oldham Lighting. We worked closely

with LDP International to design and manufacture a bespoke

extruded aluminum housing to integrate as part of the

window mullion façade. We installed approximately 300

metres of extruded aluminum housing all finished to match

the same RAL colour specification as the window mullion

along with an frosted opal diffuser to house our Rana-LED

Micro Bar 16.7mm pitch. The cool white 8000°K LED colour

temperature created a visually striking and powerful light

effect, making it stand out on this prestigious street.

As far as Chris Richardson is concerned lighting is still

evolving in terms of product and installation needs.

“Lighting is still one of the best ways of attracting customers

into a retail environment and showcasing products. With the

latest technologies we can do this at a cost that encourages

retailers to look at their current and future lighting as part of

their brand image. What we have achieved at Primark in

Edinburgh shows what can be done with cost-effective and

tailored products. Visually the façade stands out in this

prestige location and was done with an eye to value as well

as effective lighting. Working in partnership with the

contractors we have produced something that blends in

sympathetically with the surroundings and yet makes

Primark a centre of attention.”

LED lighting is not the be all and end all to lighting, but it is

something that is inspiring new lighting designers and

architects to achieve more. At Oldham Lighting we are there

to support them and make sure it all fits!

Oldham Lighting has been

one of the most innovative lighting installers of the past

decade with a portfolio that includes the new Eurostar

terminus at St.Pancras, Heathrow's Terminal 5, The Savoy

Hotel and some of the Middle East's most prestigious

building projects.

On your bikeJulie’s Bicycle has announced a three-year sponsorship deal with White Light after the companies developed a strong relationship based on a mutual commitment to environmental sustainability, a shared understanding that this issue is at the forefront of business trends, and respect for one another’s work.

The sponsorship will support a UK-wide theatre programme. Julie’s Bicycle and White Light have already jointly promoted events for theatre professionals specialising in lighting, and have identified the challenges and opportunities presented by low carbon solutions for front of house and auditoria lighting.

Bryan Raven, MD at White Light, said: ‘The team at Julie’s Bicycle have been leading the campaign to increase inclusion of sustainability as part of the day-to-day decision-making process in our industry since they were formed. Their advice and support on the various initiatives we have been involved with has been invaluable and we are delighted to be able to support them for the next few years.’

Philips lights Florence LD for Florence and the Machine, Chris Bushell, is using VL3500 Wash and VL3000 Spot luminaires from Philips Vari-Lite to deliver his evocative and atmospheric lighting design for the band’s world tour.

Bushell’s lighting skillfully pulls the audience focus to the centre of the stage without losing the essential theatricality of Florence’s shows. Lighting is ethereal with Bushell using it more as a statement than for big effects. He explains: ‘The overall theme is based around 1920s Baroque fashion and architecture. While a great deal of thought and planning went into the set, I wanted the presence of the lighting to complement and exploit the space around the set piece. The VL3000 Spots were perfect for this.

‘With their wide angles and long throw I was able to use them as top and back/side light. The VL3500 Wash fixtures fanned out from the centre, mimicking the set and creating an almost physical beam presence in the air.’

Bushell uses a rich palette of colour; deep hues of orange, yellow, red and blue wash over the stage. ‘Another part of the brief was to employ an esoteric colour palette,’ he continues. ‘The Series 3000 luminaires were great for complimenting and cutting through these colours, which I didn’t necessarily want to appear on Florence’s skin tone or costume.’

Bushell says he chose to use the Series 3000 luminaires because: ‘they still pack enough punch at long distances for great airborne effects, yet are also great for sympathetically lighting the subject.’

ROBE’S MEXICAN DISTRIBUTORRobe lighting has a new distributor - Vari Internacional, one of the leading professional lighting and sound sales operations in Latin American. The announcement was made during the 2012 Soundcheck Expo in Mexico City, at a special launch party staged at the Polyforum Siqueiros, part of the World Trade Center complex.

Vari Internacional has particular expertise in rental & staging, television and theatre. It works

with premium brands, including L-Acoustics and Avid - another aspect initially attracting both companies together, especially with Vari Internacional’s family-orientated business model, which fits perfectly with Robe.

Its Mexico City will feature the full Robe range, and its technical and sales teams have already visited the Czech Republic to receive product training. The Mexican entertainment technology market is among the most important in Latin America. It has been steadily growing in the last two years, and Robe has plenty of short and long term strategic expectations. Sales director, Harry von den Stemmen says: ‘Vari Internacional’s business commitment to supplying only the best quality brands impressed us, and we’re positive that it will be a highly successful partnership’.

NEW GENERAL MANAGER AT POINT SOURCEPoint Source Productions has appointed Amy Parks as general manager. After a stint as PA to managing director, Stephen Capel, Parks will take over the day-to-day running of the company.

She comments: ‘As the company has grown over the past few years, I have been shadowing Stephen, so it made sense for an official restructuring in order to formalise my role and to allow him to focus on other aspects of the business.

‘My strengths lie in client liaison and people management, where Stephen’s lie in his extensive lighting industry experience and business development.’

Point Source was originally established in order to provide high quality equipment and service

to the entertainment, event and corporate service industries.

But as the business grew, the growing amount of administration took Capel away from the parts of the job he enjoyed doing most: business development and working with lighting designers and directors.

He explains: ‘I’m looking forward to prmoting the event services side of the company.’

t’s got many names: the box, Cyclops, my mum called it the moving wallpaper – but however we refer to it, almost every home in the country – if not almost every room in every home in the country - has a TV.

I’ll come clean here – I did consider trying to research an accurate figure for the number of actual programmes produced each day, week or year, but even restricting it to the UK made me feel slightly faint when I looked at the number of channels available to us, and the number of programmes in any 24-hour period. And that’s without taking into account global TV production. Suffice it to say, lighting TV studios must be pretty big business.

CREATING THE MOMENT One of the biggest names in the global TV studio lighting business is Robe; the company is based in the Czech Republic, where it manufactures innovative moving lights for the entertainment industry.

Belgian national broadcaster VRT has just invested in 42 Robe Robin 300 LEDWash moving lights. The lights were specified by the TV station’s head of technical, Johan Bosmans, who’d been impressed after seeing them in action and from recommendations by colleagues, including TV lighting designer, Michiel Milbou. Milbou specified them for the prime-time chat show, Vrienden van de Veire, broadcast on Belgium’s EEN channel. The show’s look relies heavily on lighting and projection. The theme colour is gold, and lighting is used to create big moments and special effects for guest entrances, as well as standard TV lighting requirements.

The LEDWash 300s are used throughout the studio, which includes a live audience and a stage for band performances. Some are sited behind the guest couch, others are on metre-high stands around the edges of the studio, while more are mounted on flexible wire ladders descending from the ceiling. Much use is made of the LEDWash 300s three individually controllable LED zones, which are great for funky, on-camera effects. THE DESIGNER’S VIEW Milbou’s design company, Never Fear Shadows has worked with VRT for the last 10 years. He hadn’t used Robe fixtures before, but liked the LEDWashes as soon as he saw them at PLASA.

Event lighting

‘I love the LEDWash 300 and 1200,’ he enthused. ‘The 300 is a cute, small, beautiful lightsource that can easily be incorporated into sets, and the 1200 is incredibly strong and powerful. Both have a nice beam, good colours and excellent whites.’ The LEDWash 300 has 237 colours, including whites at 2,700, 3,200, 4,200, 5,600 and 8,000 Kelvin, provided via a virtual colour wheel, and the dimmer channel emulates halogen lamp-like behaviour with red effect and thermal delay in the 2,700, 3,200 ranges. The well calibrated whites are ideal for a televisual environment.

The LEDWash fixtures and all the other lights for Vrienden Van de Veire are controlled via a grandMA2 light operated by Werner Dries and Chris Leemans, with additional lighting equipment for the show supplied by PRG Brussels.

TEACHING AIDSCloser to home, Lincoln University has i nvested in 30 Chroma-Q Color Force RGBA LED fixtures for its two television studios at the campus’s Media Broadcast Production Centre, which have been upgraded to full multi-camera and HD spec facilities.

Chroma-Q Color Force 12” / 300mm multi-purpose fixtures and Color Force 72” / 1.8m battens, supplied by AC-ET, have replaced all the studios’ old lights, which has reduced the 43,000 Watts of power they consumed with an expedient 3,700 Watts for the new LED lighting.

Color Force was chosen after extensive research by studio engineer and technical specialist, Steve Judge. He explained his decision: ‘The quality of the light output from the Color Force fixtures has already made a massive difference to programme-making, and the depth of the colours looks superb in HD.’

The decision to go with Chroma-Q was enthusiastically endorsed by media and broadcast manager, Geoff Thompson, who said: ‘The LED lighting has transformed workflow, and had a huge beneficial impact on our TV studios, with students experiencing state-of-the-art technology at first hand.’

The decision to change to LED lighting started two years ago, when Dean, Professor David Sleight visited the BVE North show in Leeds, and discovered the advantages of an LED-based system. Judge started

comparing brands and learned that the faculty would be eligible for a carbon reduction interest-free loan for the purchase. To qualify, the equipment had to pay for itself within five years and be capable of saving 90 per cent of the energy of the sources being replaced.

ON WITH THE SHOWGame shows are big users of dramatic lighting. Production Services Ireland (PSI) supplied full lighting production, trussing and associated rigging for Take Me Out (Ireland) and Family Fortunes.

Andrew Leonard, lighting designer for both shows worked closely with console programmer and live visuals operator, Peter Canning from High Resolution Lighting.

For Take Me Out, the crew installed a centre box truss just in front of the stage and rigged 30 VARI*LITE V*L1000 tungsten moving lights for front keys to highlight the contestants. There were also 30 PixelPARs in the set pieces.

Backlighting each contestant from the back truss was an ETC Source Four 15-30 zoom in white, and another Source Four 25-50 zoom in red. In addition, PSI supplied Robe ColorSpot 700E ATs and ColorWash 700E ATs, V*L3500 Spots, more PixelPARs & Source Four zooms, 1.2K fresnels, ARRI 2k & 1k fresnels, floor PARs, 800W Red-heads along with 30 x Chroma-Q Color Block DB4 LED battens. On the Family Fortunes set, all the V*L 1000 tungstens were removed and a VL 2500 spot package and extra Robe ColorWash 700E ATs were installed.

For Leonard, the challenges included delivering the best possible shows that were also comparable in terms of production values to the UK versions – but on a budget. This informed his choice of the V*L1000s for front key lights and Source Fours at the back - an effect that worked perfectly.

POINTLESS ANSWERS Finally, regular viewers of the BBC quiz show, Pointless can’t help but have noticed the revitalised lighting that’s illuminating the current series. Robe LEDWash 600 moving lights were used by lighting designer, Tom Kinane to highlight the set of the latest series.

The 22 LEDWashes – supplied by rental company Automated – were all located on the floor at the back of the set, and illuminated an eye-catching collection of flown fabric sails, which were an integral part of Dominic Tolfts’ set design. They shaped and defined the overall space in which the action took place.

And the winner is...In Estonia, an impressive rig of 70 Robe moving lights designed by Rene Jõhve and Meelis Lusmägi of Cuu Club, provided a stunning visual setting for the final round of Eesti Laul, Estonia’s 2012 Eurovision qualifying competition. Presented by comedians, Tiit Sukk and Taavi Teplenkov, it was broadcast live on ETV1 in front of a live audience of 1800.

The fixture count for the show was 20 Robin 300 Spots, 22 Robin 600 LEDWashes, 12 Robin 300 LEDWashes, 12 x ColorSpot 1200E ATs, and three ColorWash 1200E ATs – all specified by Jõhve, who is a firm fan of the brand. ‘We have used Robe fixtures for a long time, and found them to be reliable and innovative,’ confirmed the designer.

A crucial factor in Kinane’s choice of LEDWash 600 was that the LED lightsource was flicker-free for the cameras. He is also very happy with the punch and coverage of the fixtures.

He comments: ‘The wash is very efficient as you’d expect, and I also like the pretty effects that can be created with the individual LED rings – great for when the lights are in shot’.

He also likes the general versatility, and the fact that you can zoom in from a wide flood to make a near-spot effect.

‘They are definitely the best moving light Robe has produced to date,’ he advised.

The lighting aesthetic for Pointless is subtle and complementary to the game, rather than lots of whizz-banging moving lights zipping around or pulsating LEDs in the face. However this straightforward, ‘no frills’ look actually requires great precision in its creation.

From a rental perspective, Automated’s James Ashdown is very pleased with his investment in LEDWash 600s, which were purchased last year and have been in use constantly ever since.

He explains that he wanted some new moving head wash lights, and as LED is the way everything is currently going, Robe’s fastest selling product ever seemed to be standing out among the flood of choices. As with most people, he was impressed with the intensity and

quality of the light output – and the excellent back-up and support from Robe UK. The LEDWashes were operated on Pointless by Andy Dobbs, together with other moving lights, using a Compulite Vector console. Simon Braddock was the generic/white light console operator, the lighting technicians were Daniel Kinane and gaffer, Richard Jarvis who worked closely with the BBC’s gaffer, Gary Bryant. The show’s executive producers are Tom Blakeson and David Flynn (who also devised the game) for Endemol.

Other Automated projects on which the LEDWashes have featured include various National Lottery shows and the National Lottery Awards, a one-off with lighting designed by Chris Kempton recorded at The London Studios.

Kinane also used them on the latest TV series of ‘Just A minute’, the classic Radio 4 comedy panel show which was recorded in BBC TC3.

The fittings have already been earmarked for the next series of Pointless, which is due to start recording in the summer.

As a final point, Automated told TL that it has found its LEDWash 600s very handy as a cross-rental item.

United Overseas Bank - Singapour

Sensitive Lighting DesignDesigned like a First Class Lounge situated on the elitist upper deck of a Boeing Dream Liner in the year 2030, the United Overseas Bank in Singapour, is one of the exceptionnal sensitive Barrisol Lighting Projects.

Showing the unlimited possibilities offered by Barrisol systems adaptability, this original area touches every human sense. The coloured light plays on organic soft rounded forms creating a ‘TENT’ pitched in sand dunes symbolic of a ‘SPACE POD’.

Apart from the structural issue, the framed Barrisol gives the entire design a visual ‘lift’ in context of a subtle contrast between the framed ‘TENT’ and the flowing seamless forms.

As the world leader of stretched ceilings, Barrisol® Normalu® presents 45 years of innovative design solutions combining technology and aestheticis. Thanks to its noble constitution, its adaptability to realize audacious shapes, in respect of high quality, security and sustainable development, Barrisol® is the best choice for designers and architects worldwide.

MGM Rising 154m on a prime waterfront property, the five-star MGM Macau is without

doubt architecturally striking, but it’s the domed courtyard at its heart - the Grande Praca - that sets it apart from other world-class luxury resorts

overed by a dramatic glass dome, which was inspired by Portugal’s Central station in Lisbon, the 1,088sq m central covered court

has a distinctive, old-world feel. MGM staff say it’s the soul of the resort.

Matt Levesque, lighting designer and founder of First Circle Design, in Newport, California, was recently tasked with improving the power efficiency, practicality and aesthetics of the lighting system within the court. ‘The ownership posed the challenge of a design using only the power already available, with enough remainder for an added theatrical lighting system during special events,’ Levesque explained. ‘All luminaire locations had to be within reach of the facility’s boom lift and the quantity of lighting positions was limited.’

He selected 95 of Iluminarc’s colour-changing Ilumipanel 180 IP wash lights for down- and side-lighting the Praca’s manicured landscape, pathways and the building facades surrounding it.

The fittings have been mounted on the existing skylight structure via a quick-release clamping system. ‘The casings were painted to match the colour of the architectural truss structure in order to address the stylistic challenge of providing a cohesive overall design with distinct visual identities,’ Levesque explained. The fittings are

‘The ownership posed the challenge of a design using only the power already available, with enough remainder for an added theatrical lighting system during special events’

discreet enough to allow an uninterrupted skylight vista with minimum visual contrast during the day.

Another challenge was to secure a lighting control system with the necessary flexibility for large live performances and festival events. Levesque used the Ilumicode Addresser from Iluminarc to set DMX addresses, calibration levels for colour corrections and fixture personalities. He then programmed the lights with Pharos Architectural Control software. Powerful and bright, the Ilumipanel fittings are dimmed down to work at 25-30 per cent intensity.

Ilumipanel 180 IP is both an interior and exterior wash light solution, featuring full spectrum colour mixing and integrated wireless DMX512 receivers. ‘These luminaires have incredible output,’ enthused Levesque. ‘They give an outstanding colour.’

For safe exterior use, Ilumipanel 180 IP has an ingress protection of 67, a humidity-controlling GORE valve, and 316 stainless steel screws for corrosive environments.

LD-SM-NM3 Surface Mounted LED emergency lighting downlight The LDE3 range of recessed LED downlights have been very successful for Emergency Lighting Products Limited but customers have asked for a self-contained unit for surface mounting direct to ceilings. Therefore, ELP has launched the LD-SM range of surface mounted, non-maintained 3Watt LED downlight units with a choice of a wide angle symmetrical lens for open areas or the assymetric ‘Corridor’ lens for escape routes. The LD-SM units utilize a neat white steel box and facia plate fitted with a standard LDE 3Watt downlight and enclosing the LDCK700S emergency driver kit to provide a discrete and attractive self-contained, 3hour duration non-maintained emergency fitting. The 145mm square x 40mm high enclosure has a rear BESA entry and 20mm knock-outs on two sides for surface conduit entry and is very simple and quick to install. With over 100Lumens output and excellent performance the LD-SM units can typically be mounted at approximately 8metre centres for open areas and 11metre centres for escape routes ensuring a cost effective installation.
